Letter from the editor: journalism in the era of post-truth ADRIAN JIMENEZ MORALES Editor-in-Chief

In the era of post-truth, aggravated by aggressive polarization, the distrust of the media is at an alltime high. Last year, only 56% of U.S. adults said they trust national news organizations, the Pew Research Center reports. This represents a decrease in trust of 20 percentage points in the last decade.

With politicians lying daily, entire nations ignoring human rights abuses and artificial intelligence being ever so close to dictating the visual narratives without a trace, we all have a reason to doubt the media. Or so I thought before joining The Oakland Post exactly two years ago.

At the time, I was more than shy — a sophomore student who barely talked to anyone and had no journalism experience other than excessively inquiring about dining on campus.

As recommended by Garry Gilbert, adjunct instructor of journalism, mentor and a pillar of the OU community, I joined the post under the great leadership of Autumn Okuszka. My first article was an Iprov Night event, which surprisingly set the tone for my journalistic career — improvisation at every step of the way.

By the end of the Winter 2024 semester, I had already covered Board of Trustees Meetings, OU traditions like the Annual Drag Show and was preparing to embark on a summer-long coverage of faculty contract negotiations. Without realizing it, I had left my fear of conversations behind and started

becoming a recognizable face for Golden Grizzly students, staff and administration.

It wasn’t divine intervention that made me grow out of my shell, but the patient and intentional tutelage of my first campus editor, Chloe Kukuk — who I hope still reads The Post and doesn’t find any AP style errors in my writing. I took her role once she graduated and had the pleasure of working alongside former Editor-in-Chief Olivia Chiappelli, who trusted me with plenty of important projects and allowed me to grow as a journalist.

When the opportunity to become EIC knocked on my door, I never thought I could share the honor with one of the most talented journalists at OU, Chelsea Bossert. Seeing a student I had shared classes with, a coworker whose writing I admire and a friend I deeply appreciate become EIC was the inspiration I needed to take the role on my last semester.

This character development I experienced at The Post stands in stark contrast to what I was told to expect from journalism. People accusing me of training to misinform the masses was the everyday feedback as I introduced myself as a reporter in the making. That being the slightest of animosities against my career, I also found myself doing the work that has gotten 175 Mexican journalists killed.

It is true that after I leave OU, some of these negative prophecies are likely to manifest — alongside wages that do not reflect the effort and passion with which all reporters write — but I wouldn’t change my tenure and learning at The Post for anything.

Both sides of the coin have led me to only one conclusion: genuine, meaningful and accurate

journalism is possible even in the face of widespread terror. At a time when even stepping out of my home poses the possibility of being brutalized by ICE, The Oakland Post, more than a refuge, has become a source of power, reassuring me that we can build better lives.

Even if it’s for four months, I want to continue making The Oakland Post not just a learning lab but also a home for all Grizzlies. Just like all the editors before me, I seek to make the newsroom a place where they can resolve questions, whether it is about campus parking, career development, or life choices. I want to give back twice as much as was granted to me by one of the most welcoming departments on campus.

The Post’s door is open, even on weekends, for everyone and anyone who wants to see the world with objectivity and look for the empathy that still shines through the troubles of our 2026. I am more than excited and thankful to serve the campus community and keep empowering my fellow Posties.

Oakland University reopens MALLORY WALIGORA Content Editor

Oakland University’s campus has resumed operations as normal after the campus was shut down due to a leak from the high temperature hot water (HTHW) system.

The university originally planned to shut down between Nov. 21 and Nov. 30 due to emergency repairs.

However, after a second and third pipe failure, the closure extended throughout the new year.

As of now, Oakland is reopened fully and operating as business as usual with classes having begun on Jan. 6, in accordance with the university’s registrar.

“All campus operations are back to normal and the university will fully reopen as scheduled,” the university said in a campus communications statement on Dec. 30.

Along with classes resuming, the Recreation Center and OU Libraries are functioning as normal.

Additionally, OU has taken steps to support residential housing in the event of another pipe leak by setting up a secondary heating system for backup support.

“University leaders understand that there were real concerns about heat and building operations as the semester came to a close,” the university said. “To address this, all residential housing buildings are now supported by redundant heating systems. This means that if the Central Heating Plant (CHP) were unavailable for any reason, heat would remain uninterrupted and student living conditions would not be impacted.”

In addition to residential housing buildings, Pawley Hall has a “redundant heating solution in place” and no

longer solely depends on the central heating plant for heating. The university is taking other steps for backup heating for other buildings on campus.

On a campus communication statement on Dec. 18, the university explained the next steps moving forward to support buildings in case of a future HTHW pipe system failure.

“To prevent similar heat loss impacts with any future HTHW pipe system failure, a decision has been made to purchase heating units and boilers for buildings at the greatest risk of heat loss,” OU said.

The first priority of buildings supplied with redundancy systems included housing buildings:

CAMPUS Hamlin Hall, Vandenberg Hall Hill House and Van Wagoner House and Pawley Hall. The second priority of buildings to receive support are Dodge Hall, Hannah Hall and the Math and Science Center. The third priority of buildings were not specifically listed but noted as “other buildings affected by heat loss.”

“Even if minor issues are discovered, however, the university is in a position to use the HTHW heating system, as well as redundant and temporary heating equipment at building sites, to maintain comfortable interior temperatures in buildings previously impacted by heat loss. This temporary business continuity plan is also serving as a foundation for future university operations planning,” the university said.

On campus, there are still some temporary heating equipment, such as propane tanks, which can be seen outside building entrances.

“Over the first few months of 2026, heating redundancy equipment will be installed permanently in buildings impacted by the HTHW system failure. As work is completed, temporary heating equipment will be removed from building entrances and walkway,” OU said.

As of now, there are no additional updates from the university. Heating system updates are slowly wrapping up, and there is no word that another leak has occurred.

“The university regrets the inconvenience this caused as the fall semester was coming to an end and extends gratitude to students, faculty and staff for their patience, flexibility and resilience,” OU communications said.

Exploring recreational sports opportunities at Winter Grizz Fest ERIN BANES

The Oakland Center’s Founders Ballrooms were packed with students on Wednesday, Jan. 8, as Winter Grizz Fest brought together dozens of campus organizations. Tables filled the space, music played throughout the room and students moved from booth to booth learning about involvement opportunities.

Sports clubs at Oakland University drew particular attention as students looked for ways to stay active and connected outside the classroom. These organizations offer students a way to stay active, meet new people and build community without the pressure of varsity athletics.

“Team sports make me feel more a part of a community,” Bella Hubbel of the women’s rugby team said. “I think it’s good to be a part of a community that has the same interests as you.”

From rugby and tennis to bowling and spike ball, sports clubs at Oakland University provide a wide range of options. Students of all experience levels are encouraged to participate, making the clubs approachable and inclusive. Many groups emphasize learning and enjoyment rather than strict competition.

Stephanie Knitter, a student attendee, emphasized the strong sense of belonging that comes with joining a sports club.

“Everybody that I know that’s in a sports club loves the community and all the friends they’ve made,” Knitter said. “One of my biggest regrets was not joining a club earlier.”

For many students, the appeal of sports clubs goes beyond competition or skill development. These organizations offer a structured yet relaxed way to connect with others who share similar interests.

At Grizz Fest, students lingered at tables asking questions about practices, time commitments and social events.

Knitter also highlighted the fitness benefits of sports clubs in a more enjoyable format.

“If you don’t like working out on your own, instead you can play a sport,” Knitter said. “It’s a great way to get exercise and not feel like you have to go to the

gym and pump iron… you get to have fun.”

Inclusivity was a recurring theme among club representatives at the event. Many clubs stress that no prior experience is required and that learning is part of the process. This welcoming approach helps remove intimidation and encourages students to try something new.

“Beginners are absolutely welcome. You don’t need any experience,” Jeremy Matzinger, who represents the Round Net club, said. “It’s very easy to pick up.”

His message resonated with students who were unsure about joining a club without previous experience.

Beyond accessibility, many clubs aim to create supportive environments where students feel comfortable both socially and athletically. Club leaders often prioritize community building just as much as skill development. This balance helps members stay engaged throughout the semester.

“You don’t have to be an experienced bowler.

Anybody can join, any majors can join,” Arianna Thompson, founder of Oakland University’s first bowling club, said. “I’m all about community and creating a safe space.”

As Winter Grizz Fest came to a close, the impact of sports clubs was clear. These organizations are not just about games or practices but about creating spaces where students feel connected. Whether competitive or casual, sports clubs continue to play a key role in building community at Oakland University.

Shots fired near Oakland University: The slow burn of campus safety ANDREW MCNAMARA MAY Features Reporter

Shots rang out from a dark SUV speeding past a parked car in broad daylight, then vanished into the fog with ghostlike indifference.

This was not a scene from Grand Theft Auto VI. It happened across from the Oakland University campus near the intersection of Walton Blvd. and Squirrel Road on Jan. 7, at approximately 1 p.m.

According to CNN, there were 75 school shootings in the United States in 2025, the lowest total since 2021. Still, that number far exceeds prepandemic figures. In 2019, the previous high was 52. In 2008, it was just 18. Progress, perhaps — but only in the bleak arithmetic of normalization.

Anxiety is high at OU. A superstitious observer might even say the campus feels cursed. After being closed for nearly a month due to a heating system failure, students returned only to hear gunshots shatter the first week of the university’s reopening. Parking lots were crowded, tempers were short and the humdrum of campus life was violently interrupted.

Although the shots were not fired on campus, the specter of campus violence loomed large over a student body still working to recalibrate.

OU issued a brief statement informing students there was no direct threat to campus but offered little in the way of a follow-up.

Such a milquetoast half-measure does little to reassure.

This is one instance where the university community would have benefited from more words, not fewer. A truly succinct message could have read: ‘Shots were fired off campus. There is no known threat. Updates will follow.’ Clear, direct and stabilizing.

Instead, ambiguity filled the vacuum.

“As soon as my phone went off, I knew my students were going to be distracted,” Vincent Stabile, a graduate student at OU, said. “I read it and thought — was that all?”

“I got the alert. I kept expecting some sort of update,” psychology major Rex Featherstone said.

In conversations across campus, one theme emerged from the university’s communication: confusion.

The vagueness may be understandable.

Universities and police departments often fear saying too much too soon. But context matters.

The campus community is still healing from the sudden closure, lost access to facilities and academic disruption caused by the heating failure.

Trust is fragile.

In that context, nonchalance does not read as calm. It reads as negligence.

Oakland University has long prided itself on intellectual diversity. Some of the work done here is edgy enough to be called punk rock. But behind every punk anthem is a system it pushes against — a “man” holding the levers of information.

Sometimes, all it takes is levers to be thrown on a soundboard to change the sound entirely.

Oakland University could take this moment — shaped by distrust after the facilities failure and confusion following the off-campus shooting — as an opportunity. It could lay out a template for what a trustworthy academic institution may look like in the modern era: transparency, good faith and a sense of shared investment between administrators, faculty and students.

Clear communication in moments of uncertainty is not optional; it is a responsibility. Right now, students are not asking for alarmism. They are asking for clarity.

SPB tradition and innovations at Bingo Night ADRIAN JIMENEZ MORALES Editor-in-Chief

As students returned to campus to kick off the Winter 2026 semester, the Student Program Board (SPB) returned to one of the classics with Big Ticket Bingo. Over a hundred students participated in SPB’s first Friday event of the year, with only the luckiest walking away with a Polaroid camera, Air Pods and a Roku TV. The Habitat was the venue of preference for the friendly competition hosted on Jan. 9. The occasion introduced many freshmen students to campus culture while also welcoming back a few recent graduates and alumni into the Grizzly community nostalgia.

Now a homecoming tradition, the Bingo Night also brought familiar faces to the stage, like Logan Pizzurro, WXOU’s music director and manager, who hosted the event and has become a recognizable face of student engagement.

“I’ve just been here a while,” Pizzurro said. “I’ve just been here a long time with both WXOU and SPB, I’ve been helping out at basically every event they’ve done.”

And he is not lying; whether it’s conducting Casino Night giveaways in front of hundreds or coordinating the tech for the Battle of the Bands, Pizzurro appears to be in every major event on campus. As a DJ for OU block parties and ‘social at the circle,’ a radio show host, or a board member for niche clubs like the Ceiling Connoisseurs, he has been part of shaping culture at OU. “I got here in 2021, that was, you know, fresh off of covid—still recovering from covid—and seeing these events grow with bigger on campus appearance and more people, more enthusiasm this year has been like the

most enthusiastic I’ve seen people so far,” Pizzurro said.

“It’s been really cool to see that kind of change and kind of grow, what I used to hear Oakland to be like before the pandemic.”

As part of the new SPB eboard, Pizzurro has been working alongside other emerging leaders to leave a mark on campus culture.

“Our goal as a new eboard is to not repeat anything,” Maggie Bassett, SPB treasurer, said. “Obviously, we have our traditions, like Haunted Hallways, Big Ticket Bingo is a tradition, annual events, but a lot of our events this semester are completely new. We’re not trying to recycle everything and we’re trying to do some new events.”

A mental health fair and a Drag Queen Bingo are some of the new ideas the 2025-2027 eboard will be hosting alongside staple events like Casino Night in an attempt to diversify how they connect with students.

“I just think that it’s nice to see students get involved in the community and it’s fun to get everyone together once in a while just to see who’s there,” Trinity Thao, SPB vice president and creative director, said. “We’re trying to make ourselves known as a new board as well, too.

So we’re just making sure that we’re putting ourselves out there.”

While most of the major events hosted by the student organization are already planned out and their budget utilized, the ideas keep coming for SPB, as they imagine the possibilities for events outside of campus.

“I made two proposals,” Cameron Warshawsky, SPB operations manager, said. “One was for the Toledo Zoo for their Christmas lights and the other was Frankenmuth.

A Christmas lights event would be really great.”

With fresh perspectives, Bingo night also allowed

students to share what other events they would like to see featured. Intense UNO games, hide-and-seek and family feud were some of the ideas pitched by students.

More often than not, if students want it, SPB has already thought about it.

“One thing that I’ve kind of always thrown around, you know, for either SPB or WXOU to do is like a ‘Fraternity Feud,’ like Family Feud, but with the fraternities or the sororities on campus,” Pizzurro said. “I feel like that would be pretty fun. There’d be some pretty fun dynamics with that, I think, but I don’t know. It hasn’t gone through for one reason or another. I’ll leave the idea on the table.”

Stages and side hustles: The life of gigging musician Dan Maslanka ADDISON KOCH Campus Editor

On Jan. 7, 2026 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., percussionist Dan Maslanka offered a look into what it means to build a life as a gigging musician. With more than 35 years of professional experience, Maslanka spoke to Oakland University band students about his career and ongoing work within the music industry.

He discussed performing with organizations such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Fisher Theatre and the American Ballet Theatre, as well as appearing at major venues including Carnegie Hall and Detroit Tigers Stadium. His experience across orchestral, jazz and theater settings demonstrated a deep commitment to the craft.

Maslanka’s journey began almost instinctively.

“I was one of those kids that took my mom’s pots and pans out of the cupboard and started beating on them before I could walk,” he explained.

Formal lessons eventually followed and by his teenage years he was already performing gigs and a member of an ensemble.

As a teenager, Maslanka formed a trio with friends that played parties and small events before expanding into a larger group. These experiences taught him collaboration, discipline and the realities of live performance. He later studied at Wayne State University where his academic training was met with real-world opportunities.

“My motto has always been to never turn any gig down,” Maslanka explained. “I always learned

something from a gig, even if it was to never take the gig again.”

This mindset helped him transition from student to professional as university connections led to work in orchestras, jazz ensembles and theater pits. He emphasized that relationships formed in school often become the foundation for future careers.

Throughout his career, Maslanka performed in major productions such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Wicked,” “West Side Story” and more. These settings demanded versatility, strong sight-reading and comfort

with complex multi-percussion setups. Reliability and preparation were constant expectations, especially in fast-paced theater environments.

“The best teacher you’re ever going to have is a school of experience,” Maslanka said.

He stressed that playing in as many situations as possible builds skills that cannot be learned in a practice room alone. Each performance teaches problemsolving, adaptability and professionalism. For him, experience was just as valuable as his formal education.

Beyond performing, Maslanka dedicated significant time to teaching and mentorship. He taught at multiple institutions, including Oakland University, helped found a professional percussion ensemble and ran a percussion store from 1995 to 2000. These roles allowed him to pass on both musical technique and practical knowledge about sustaining a career within the ever-changing music industry.

“You have to have such an extreme passion for it that nobody can deter you,” Maslanka said.

He emphasized realism alongside passion, encouraging musicians to understand the business side of music including unions, contracts and taxes. He explained that treating music like a business is essential for long-term success.

By the end of the session, students gained a clearer understanding of what life as a professional musician truly involves. Maslanka’s honesty about both the rewards and challenges offered valuable insight for aspiring performers. His message encouraged students to remain open to opportunities, commit fully to their craft and continue learning long after graduation.

Between classes: Atmospheric campus spots for commuter students CAEL TANNER Features Editor

For commuter students navigating gaps between classes, the Oakland University campus can sometimes begin to feel like a place to pass through rather than stay.

According to the OU Office of Institutional Research and Assessment (OIRA) 2024-2025 Common Data Set, 83% of undergraduate students enrolled in Fall 2024 live off campus or commute. Many students arrive for class, leave shortly afterward, and may repeat the process later in the day.

However, for students with unevenly-spaced schedules and long-distance commuters not yet headed home for the day, the sprawling halls of main campus buildings leave little indication of where to spend an hour or two tackling online coursework between classes.

The Oakland Center is a fair choice, with several dining options, perpetual seating availability, and many a place to stow a textbook-filled backpack.

However, it can be busy and loud through peak daytime hours, making it difficult to study, attend to homework or catch up on reading.

Tucked away on the upper floors of various buildings are a few choice spaces that offer relative calm, comfort, and a chance to get something done between classes or other campus commitments.

One such location is on the fourth floor of the Human Health Building. Just past a fifth-floor

staircase and away from the bustle and movement of the ground-floor hallways, a seating area furnished with couches, colorful artwork and several tables fills out this unique part of the interior.

The space is well-lit and visually warm, offering an environment that feels closer to a lounge than a hallway. A few classrooms are nearby, but distance from elevators and main entrances can make it wellsuited for reading, individual quiet work or taking a break between lectures.

Varner Hall offers another option for students looking to settle in without distractions. On the second floor, a seating area with tables, armchairs and window seating overlooks Parking Lot 26, on the southeast end of campus.

Natural light fills the space throughout the day, and its location facing away from foot traffic helps to

cut back on any nearby noise. It provides a practical spot for laptop work or brief decompressing without straying far from central campus.

For students who prefer a more traditional quiet environment, it would be hard to beat the Kresge Library. The library provides several choices for a simple walk-in; cabanas, group-sized tables, tucked-away nooks and corner seating. The upper floors in particular offer a pleasant atmosphere, with artworks and decor that seem to evoke a museum setting in displaying the library’s collection.

Also notable are the enclosed study rooms and group reflection rooms throughout the library that may be reserved by students in advance – even for just a short period. These rooms accommodate both individual study and small group work, offering flexibility depending on one’s needs.

Taken together, these locations highlight a side of campus that can be easy to overlook when only traveling to and from class. While Oakland University is sometimes characterized by its large commuter population, the availability of comfortable, quiet spaces throughout suggests an effort to support students who may spend extended portions of their day on campus.

For commuters with time to fill between classes, knowing where to go can make a meaningful difference – whether working ahead, catching up, or just recharging. Even if one’s classes are all located on a single part of campus, it may be worth looking around when a free moment is at hand – just be sure to remain respectful of any classes that may be in session nearby.

Fool-proof ways to sustain your New Year’s resolutions MARIA MAGNOLI Arts Reporter

A new year, a fresh start and yet another semester to complete. Only four months are left in the school year, and the new year is the time to make the most of it. Whether your goal is to exercise more frequently, eat healthier, go to sleep earlier or have better time management, it is crucial to understand exactly how you plan to execute such tasks. Here are four ways to complete those objectives for 2026.

Habit stacking The term famously coined by author James Clear in his 2018 book “Atomic Habits” refers to adding new habits onto existing ones. Before taking action, you must first identify your current habits and then ones you want to adapt.

For instance, you set a goal of incorporating more protein in your diet. To do this, you may put protein powder in your coffee before your workout and then eat a bowl of cottage cheese after your workout.

This framework can be applied to just about any resolution you want.

Effectively multitasking: Key word being effectively Multitasking itself is a deceptive term, as research from the National Institute of Health (NIH) has made it clear that “the human mind and brain lack the architecture to perform two or more tasks simultaneously.” In fact, it is generally recommended that you plan out your schedule with the goal that you do not multitask — it can be distracting and divert your attention from learning.

Nevertheless, there are times when you want to be distracted. Walking on the treadmill for one hour is one of those times. Yes, you could listen to music, watch a YouTube video or even listen to a podcast, but if you have some reading to catch up on for a class, this is definitely the time to do it. You will be amazed at how quickly time passes you by.

Reducing technology use Saying that college students are busy is an understatement. Many students work extensively on top of being a full-time student, and that is no easy task.

“63 percent of undergraduates who worked and were enrolled full time and 88 percent of those who worked and were enrolled part time worked more than twenty hours per week,” the U.S. Department of Education found in 2017.

When so many hours of the day are spent focusing so intensely, the mind needs to be as clear as possible. To accomplish that, ridding your brain of excessive technology use can truly change not only the speed at which work is completed, but also the depth of thought produced in assignments.

Become a calendar addict I am convinced that heavy utilization of a calendar can solve world hunger. Make use of a planner or digital calendar, completely up to you, but use it religiously. Put classes on there, events, work times, when you are supposed to exercise, perhaps when you need to practice a sport or instrument, appointments, when assignments are due and more. Let the calendar write your life, and you will become an entirely different person.

The all-too-common battle with pornography addiction JAMES ELLING Sports Editor

*Bernie, Kerl and Barabbas are pseudonyms used to protect the identities of those interviewed.

As *Bernie, a 22-year-old university student, heads into the bathroom, he leaves his phone behind.

He steps into his shower. Its walls are covered in printed out Bible verses that have been placed into Ziploc bags and duct taped to the tiles. Reminders to stay vigilant are penned onto the same tiles in permanent marker.

“STARVE THE DOG,” he reads inscribed just below the shower head that hisses out cold water — the dog is the pornography addiction that once sunk its fangs into Bernie’s life. While the dog’s jaws no longer have a grip on him, the scars remain.

The same scars are shared by millions — a 2025 Gitnux report found that 58% of men and 34% of women say they spend too much time viewing pornography, and that approximately 21 million Americans are addicted. For many, including Bernie, what begins as a private habit grows into a compulsion that reshapes intimacy and identity.

The Oxford Dictionary defines pornography as “printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement.”

Today, it typically refers to sexually explicit online videos instantly accessible on the internet.

Bernie’s first exposure came the summer between sixth and seventh grade, at 12 years old. He spent the summer on his couch with a cast on his leg, recovering from a sports injury.

“Naturally I did a lot of scrolling on the internet,” Bernie said. “I spent a lot of time on Instagram.”

What started as photos of models in bikinis eventually devolved into pornography as Bernie went down a rabbit hole of increasingly-provocative hashtags.

Bernie went back to this same well with increasing frequency. Even throughout Bernie’s school days, the dog tugged at its leash, drawing Bernie’s thoughts to the temporary pleasures that waited for him in his bedroom.

It was no longer a guilty pleasure, but something his brain depended on for stability.

A study done by Cambridge University found that pornography releases unnaturally high dopamine spikes — often higher or longer-lasting than most drugs — which rewire the brain toward compulsive use.

Ted Shimer is a pornography addiction expert who founded the Freedom Fight, an online platform meant to equip young men to experience freedom from pornography addiction.

“Porn is one of the most addictive of all substances — in fact, some people have come to call pornography ‘the new drug,’” Shimer said. “Some drugs create a higher dopamine high than porn, but there are no drugs as accessible as the new drug.”

“Few drugs can be binged on for hours at a time like porn, which creates massive amounts of dopamine in the brain,” Shimer said.

By the time Bernie developed a moral opposition to his pornography use, it was too late. Bernie had — in every sense of the word — an addiction.

“I had a desire to stop, but I couldn’t,” Bernie said.

“I deleted social media and even Safari off my phone.

I didn’t have access to my computer either — and I would still find a way to look at porn.”

“I was like a freaking drug addict scrounging around the ground looking for a little scrap of a

high,” Bernie admitted.

Pornography addiction, like other addictions, has very real consequences.

A study by the Journal of Sex Research linked pornography addiction to anxiety and depression, guilt and shame, isolation and secrecy, reduced relationship satisfaction and distorted expectations of sex. It can even cause erectile dysfunction and arousal issues, loss of romantic trust, escalation into more extreme content, sleep disruption, fatigue and a decline in productivity at work or school.

Bernie faced many of those issues. As with millions of others, perhaps most severe was the shame.

Each click gnawed at his confidence, stripping away layers of his identity until only shame remained.

“I felt out of control of myself. It made me feel like a little boy,” he said. “You’d think a man would have control over his own body.”

His shame’s priciest toll was the isolation that came with it.

“Not wanting to ruin the image people had of me stopped me from reaching out and trying to find help for a really long time,” Bernie said.

“We weren’t made for isolation — porn reprograms our brain for isolation, which tells you why it kills relationships,” Shimer said. “The opposite of addiction isn’t sobriety. It’s connection.”

The dog was hungry, and — no matter how hard he tried — Bernie couldn’t starve it alone. Whether he locked up his phone, took away his laptop access or took a Sharpie to his shower walls, it wasn’t enough.

Bernie was trapped until he “connected” — until he decided that his recovery was more important than his image.

The mangy mutt was hungry, but not invincible. Its weakness? Honesty and accountability.

Shimer’s words about connection weren’t just theory. Bernie discovered them firsthand when his progress towards recovery was catalyzed by creating an accountability group that included himself and six friends, all fellow victims of the dog’s nasty bite.

The group committed to daily check-ins, praying for each other regularly and weekly discussion meetings.

The group progresses through Freedom Fight content, curated by Shimer, that is meant to educate and equip them in their battle against pornography addiction.

“Being surrounded by close friends who were also trying to recover from a porn addiction, and just having people that know my struggles and I know their struggles — that’s been super empowering,” Bernie said. “They can motivate me, and I can motivate them.

We can keep each other accountable.”

Kerl* and Barabbas* are two of Bernie’s six accountability partners.

“Being in a group with [Bernie] has been so beneficial,” Kerl said. “It’s been great and encouraging to watch him grow, and I think it really helps him to have others who care about him hold him accountable…

He isn’t alone.”

“There’s a Bible verse that says the wounds of a friend are better than the kisses of an enemy,” Barabbas said, “and [Bernie] embodies that — I know he cares about me deeply, and he doesn’t beat around the bush in talking sternly to me and keeping my head on straight.”

“It’s been such a benefit to my life, in regards to forming good habits and making sure that I am being a man of integrity — even when I’m alone,” Barabbas added. “Bringing anything done in the darkness out into the light is groundbreaking for recovery.”

The group members discussed and developed a habit that they lean on when the dog begins to tug on the

leash — when their addictions are triggered and they are tempted to return to pornography use. They call it “BRACE,” an acronym.

The “B” stands for breathe.

“Slow down, take some deep breaths, de-escalate things,” Bernie said.

Next is “R:” remember the truth.

After their deep breaths, the group members will recall or read Bible verses that relate to the issue and call them to a higher standard.

They might also “remember the truth” by considering the possible consequences of using pornography, reminding themselves how unsatisfied pornography has left them in the past or picturing the ways the addiction could harm their future families.

“A:” ask for help.

After hopefully achieving a state of clarity, Bernie and his group, all Christians, will turn to prayer.

“Ask God to be your strength. Accepting my weakness and asking God to be my strength has been really important,” Bernie said.

If the dog is still scratching at the door, “C” comes next — call. Bernie and his friends pick up the phone and tell an accountability partner that they’re struggling.

Finally comes “E,” for escape. Go on a run, pick up a LEGO set, settle in at a public study spot.

Bernie credits his accountability group — including their practice of “BRACE” — as a key player in his journey toward recovery. The group was founded just over a year ago, and it’s approaching a year since Bernie last threw the dog a bone.

“I’m not sure I can express how important it is to be built up by others who are battling the same struggle,” Kerl, who has also gone a year without returning to pornography, added. “He fights so hard, and he encourages me to do the same.”

Even a year removed from feeling helpless, Bernie knows recovery isn’t the same as cure. The dog still lingers at the edges of his mind, waiting for a moment of weakness. Shame still whispers, though softer now, and trust is something he continues to rebuild day by day.

“I certainly believe that healing is possible, but I’m not sure that a full restoration is possible,” Bernie said.

What was once the deepest bite still leaves a most painful scar: Bernie’s distorted view of women and intimacy.

In the “trenches” of his addiction, everything became sexualized, and Bernie felt like he couldn’t separate women from the idea of sex.

“I wasn’t able to see women for who they are,” Bernie said. “That was the worst part — not being able to see half of mankind for their God-given value.”

Bernie has seen a lot of progress on that front, but he is still unsatisfied with the ways he’s been hardwired by pornography.

“It’s been a year and I feel like I’m just starting to see women the way I should have the whole time,” Bernie said.

He hopes to be married someday and fears that intimacy with his wife might be distorted by the scars the dog has left.

“Porn trains the mind to disconnect sex from intimacy, from commitment, from relationship,” Shimer said.

Bernie identified his recovery as integral for being able to see his wife as “lovely,” rather than as “somebody who can give sex.”

The final event before the shutdown: International Night RUBY HERNANDEZ Marketing Director

Prior to the campus-wide shutdown, Oakland University’s Global Engagement Office hosted one of the largest events of the academic semester.

The ISSO CAIR International Night took place on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Oakland Center banquet rooms. The event served as the final major gathering on campus before the shutdown.

To kick off the night, ISSO employees, CAIR executive board members and volunteers welcomed attendees as they arrived. The event was open to the public and free for all guests. Community members, students and faculty were all encouraged to attend and participate.

Food played a major role in creating a welcoming environment. Attendees were offered a wide variety of dishes including sushi, shawarma and churros.

The food selection reflected the many cultures represented throughout the event and encouraged people to gather and connect.

Throughout the evening, there were 15 live performances representing countries from around the world. Music, dance and artistic expression filled the banquet rooms as students showcased their cultures.

The performances highlighted the diversity of the Oakland University community and created a space where all backgrounds were celebrated.

Jurgem Mezinaj, a student representing Connect the Nations and the Albanian American Student

Organization, said the event held special meaning for him.

“Today we are here to share the values, the foods and the pictures of Albania,” Mezinaj said.

He explained that participating allowed him to represent his country and culture proudly.

Oakland University’s ISSO and CAIR partnered with more than 20 student organizations and campus offices to make the event possible.

Leading up to International Night, many students questioned whether the event would continue due to the announced shutdown. Despite uncertainty, organizers remained committed to moving forward.

for the event. Their efforts ensured that International Night could proceed as planned. The success of the event reflected the dedication of both staff and student leaders.

For many students, the event represented more than entertainment. It offered a sense of belonging during a time of uncertainty for international students.

“I think it’s important to give a space and highlight all of the cultures that are on campus,” Jasmin Carmona-Almanzan, president of the Spanish Club, said.

The audience included students, faculty, professors and community members. Performers sang, danced and shared art that reflected their cultural identities and personal backgrounds. Attendees were able to learn about traditions, fashion and history from around the world. The shared experience encouraged conversation, appreciation and a deeper understanding of the diversity within the Oakland University community.

“Oakland is a big melting pot with different cultures and different backgrounds,” Kujsi Gongo, member of the Albanian American Student Organization, said. “It’s very important to show people of other backgrounds and ethnicities all of that.”

As the final event of the 2025 academic year, ISSO CAIR International Night served as a meaningful conclusion to the semester. Despite the campus shutdown, the Global Engagement and ISSO offices successfully brought communities together to celebrate. CAIR, a student organization run through ISSO remains committed to fostering inclusion through events like International Night.

Following a prolonged break due to a campus-wide shutdown and winter recess, students were welcomed back to Oakland University at Winter Grizz Fest. The event marked the start of the winter semester and encouraged students to reconnect with campus life. Winter Grizz Fest created a welcoming atmosphere focused on involvement and engagement.

The event was hosted on Jan. 8 in the Founders Ballrooms of the Oakland Center. Student organizations, clubs, societies and campus departments gathered to connect directly with students.

“Meeting people face to face is such an important part,” Eliana Hoekstra, volunteer coordinator for the Pre-Med Society, said.

“When you come in person, you can meet, interact with them and get questions answered.”

“It’s a place where we can learn how to play music that’s not native to the United States,” Donovan Marlin, secretary of the World Music Organization, said. “It’s super beginner-friendly; anybody from any kind of background can join.”

Students also had opportunities to connect with organizations centered on academic and professional development. These groups focused on helping students build skills while forming meaningful social connections. Many emphasized mentorship and career exploration alongside community building.

“Our club, Association of Women in Communications was brought back this semester,” Ruby Hernandez, president of the organization, said. “We empower women in the communications field and help students figure out what they want to do with their lives.”

Winter Grizz Fest also served as a recruitment opportunity for organizations rebuilding or expanding their presence on campus. Club leaders used the event to raise awareness and attract new members. Visibility and face-to-face interaction played a major role in those efforts.

“The E-board graduated a couple of years ago and now we’re working on bringing it back,” Hernandez said. “We’re hoping to make it more public, so that’s why we’re here today at Grizz Fest.

Around 50 tables were set up throughout the ballroom, giving students a wide range of opportunities to explore. Academic groups, cultural organizations, Greek life, sports clubs and support services were all represented. The layout allowed students to move freely and discover new interests at their own pace.

Oakland University’s diverse student population was reflected in the number of culturally focused organizations present.

These groups aim to help students feel represented and connected on campus.

“We have a pretty big international student group and we get new students every semester,” Rama AlHyari, co-president of the Jordanian Student Association, said. “They’re going to be homesick and want to reconnect with their culture.”

Several organizations highlighted inclusivity through shared interests, groups like the World Music Organization emphasized learning through collaboration and creativity. These clubs

As we kick off the brand new year of 2026, movie lovers have plenty to look forward to. From epic blockbusters to literary adaptations, this year’s lineup promises something for everyone. Here are some of the most anticipated films of the year to keep an eye on.

“The Odyssey” From Christopher Nolan, the visionary director behind “Dunkirk,” “Oppenheimer” and “The Dark Knight” trilogy, comes a new story of Trojan proportions. Set in the aftermath of the Trojan war, “The Odyssey” tells the story of the legendary hero Odysseus on his long and perilous voyage home to Ithaca.

On July 17, follow Odysseus as he braves cyclopes, sirens and the witch Circe on a journey to reunite with his wife, Penelope. Matt Damon stars as the titular Odysseus, joined by a star-studded ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya.

“Spiderman: Brand New Day” and “Avengers: Doomsday” The Avengers will return in full force this year with two major additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

On July 31, Peter Parker swings back onto the big screen in “Spiderman: Brand New Day,” grappling with his new reality after tampering with the multiverse.

Forgotten by the world, Peter Parker returns to fighting street-level crime.

Later this year, on Dec. 18 “Avengers: Doomsday” brings together a host of familiar faces including Thor and Captain America, along with crossover appearances from the X-Men. Together, they face one of Marvel’s most formidable opponents yet: Doctor Doom.

“The Hunger Games: Sunrise On the Reaping” Suzanne Collins’ newest return to the world of Panem tells the story of Haymitch Abernathy and his victory in the 50th Hunger Games. On Nov. 20, explore a young Haymitch’s journey and how he eventually became a key figure in the rebellion as seen in the original films.

Joseph Zada takes on the role of Haymitch Abernathy, Ralph Fiennes stars as President Snow and McKenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner.

“Dune: Part 3” Return to the spice planet Arrakis on Dec. 18 with the continuation of Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” saga.

Set 12 years after the events of “Dune: Part 2,” the film adapts Frank Herbert’s novel “Dune: Messiah.”

While Denis Villeneuve claims this is his last “Dune” film, he leaves the door open to other directors taking charge of the remaining three “Dune” novels. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Anya TaylorJoy all reprise their roles.

“Withering Heights” Margot Robbie stars Cathy Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff in this new adaption of Emily Brontë’s acclaimed novel. Releasing Feb. 13, the film tells the tragic story of two star-crossed lovers divided by social class and circumstance.

A hallmark of Gothic literature, “Wuthering Heights” explores themes of race, social hierarchy and revenge while confronting difficult topics such as domestic abuse and challenging the rigid Victorian morality of its time.

MBT and OU SMTD celebrate Elvis Presley’s legacy MARIA MAGNOLI Arts Reporter

The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, recently received an astounding tribute in the halls of Meadow Brook Theatre (MBT). Starting on Jan. 7, actors from MBT and Oakland University School of Music, Theatre and Dance (SMTD) collaborated to bring this expansive production — “All Shook Up” — to life, as the nearly 30 song musical wowed audience members from near and far.

The all-Elvis jukebox musical with the plot of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” made for an awefilled, nostalgic and hilarious evening. Set in a small town, Chad (Nick Cortazzo, MBT), a leather-jacketed outsider who captivates almost every girl’s attention, brings thrill to the up-tight community. His guitar, motorcycle and flirtatious manner begin stirring things up really quick.

Running until Feb. 1, the show features Elvis classics like “A Little Less Conversation,” “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Blue Suede Shoes.”

The opening number perfectly captured one of the songs and scenes that launched The King to immediate stardom. Cortazzo had charisma that was nothing short of extraordinary. The lighting, suave choreography and ensemble that set the stage perfectly left attendees astounded.

The gyrating pelvis of a young man in the 1950s, libido-energized teenagers, yearning for love and forbidden love were all more than present throughout the entirety of the performance. Highlighted

prominently were the social norms that remained in this post-World War II society: racial segregation, discrimination and conservative values that pressured teens especially to conform to the traditional norms that once defined a society.

When Chad enters town, he quickly becomes every teenage girl’s fantasy, but others ridicule him for his “wild” nature. Natalie Haller (Mirabella Ziegler, OU

SMTD) becomes infatuated with the man who doesn’t want her back, but thankfully for the audience, it made for many breathtaking vocal moments.

The character development and vocal tone that Ziegler possesses is astonishing. As she switches from ballads to rock ‘n’ roll, the emotional weight that her character experienced penetrated right through to the minds of the audience.

Mentioning that the show was a thrill to perform in, Ziegler noticed that attendees felt the same.

“An audience member said to me that it was all new arrangements of his [Elvis] songs, but all old memories,” Ziegler said. “And I found that to be so beautiful; it is just a show based on love. I think everyone who has seen it so far has just left the theater radiating, and I hope that everyone who comes through those doors feels the same.”

The ensemble was decked out in swing and circle skirts in purple, yellow and blue. All of the men were spotted in nothing less than a button-up shirt and slacks.

An old-school flair was also exemplified on set through the town square’s rigidity.

The stage presence and demeanor of Miss Sandra (Kassandra Aguilar-Haddock) switched strongly from alluring to incredibly comical. At one point in the second act, she believes she has found her supposed love, and the audience was cracking up intensely over the strange looking match.

Love is invigorating, comforting, crazy, tough, overwhelming, inspiring and everything in between.

“All Shook Up” does not just honor Elvis’ legacy, but it depicts the many stages and situations that love has to offer — even when we may least expect it.

“Stranger Things” have happened, this one doesn’t stand out MARISSA GETSCHMAN Arts Editor

For the weary soul looking for answers to continuity issues and the like within the final season of the ever-popular Netflix series “Stranger Things” … look no further, there are no answers to be found.

The best way to enjoy the season is to sit back, relax and ask no questions.

“Stranger Things” took the world by sporadic storm in 2016 with an alternate dimension literally flipping the small town of Hawkins, Indiana on its head in a Dungeons and Dragons themed thriller set in the ‘80s. Nearly a decade later, the 5 season long series has remained one of the most loved and anticipated series on Netflix, and for good reason.

The casting is superb; each actor nails their role every single time they’re on screen.

Much of the cast consists of breakout actors who weren’t well known before their roles in Hawkins.

Millie Bobby Brown, for example, got her start as Eleven and has since made a name for herself among the biggest selling performers and producers today.

This new season spotlights a new young actress Nell Fisher, who plays Holly Wheeler. While she has played a few roles in her thus-far short career, “Stranger Things” is sure to boost her prowess tenfold. The young actress played a crucial role in the plot this season and did so with flair. Fisher is sure to boast the same fame as Brown and the others in the near future.

That being said, after roughly a decade of

anticipation, there is nothing the Duffer brothers could have done to satisfy expectations for the series finale. The writing is somewhat atrocious, but even the world’s best writer, whoever that may be, would not be able to write an ending that wouldn’t leave fans yearning for more.

In most cases where a story doesn’t work, it will be the editing or acting that takes away from the writing. That is not the case with “Stranger Things.”

The acting is incredible, the editing is thrilling, the writing lacks luster. An open ending can be a good thing, but not when the writing style feels like a Band-Aid or a shield to protect the creators from criticism. There are also a few editing moments where viewers need to suspend disbelief a little extra, but that will be the case with any fantasy style film.

While there is no secret 9th episode as some folks have theorized, fans will be pleased to hear that the story isn’t truly over yet. While the main plot has concluded, the Duffers have shared the imminent release of an animated series set around the same characters in 1985, between seasons 1 and 2. The voice cast will be completely different, but that serves as an opportunity to boost more young performers to stardom. There will also be another live-action series further down the line set in the same universe, but with different mythology.

“Stranger Things” is a great series considering its ability to grab an audience by the throat and hold it for an entire decade. The series boasts a loyal following to this day that will likely extend to the franchise as a whole. Despite greatly contrasting opinions on the finale, the series is still worth the watch, especially for the many facets of nostalgia: ‘80s, 2016 and D&D.

The fade of fame: Award shows are losing credibility SARAH WASIELEWSKI Arts Reporter

As awards season kicks into full gear, culminating with the Academy Awards in March, it also raises questions about credibility and whether these ceremonies still deserve public support. While the arts are undeniably worth celebrating, it is increasingly unclear whether award shows like the Grammys and Oscars remain an effective and meaningful way to do so.

The Grammy Awards, in particular, have even received the unflattering nickname “the Scammys” in response to a history of controversial wins. One recent example is Beyonce winning Best Country Album for “Cowboy Carter,” an album many would argue barely fits within the country genre, especially when compared to the traditional country artists nominated that year, such as Chris Stapleton.

Others were surprised in 2025 when Taylor Swift, an undeniably indomitable force in the music industry, failed to win a single Grammy despite receiving six nominations. These outcomes reflect a growing perception that Grammy nominations and wins fail to represent popular music taste or artistic consensus.

Shockingly, voters for the Oscars were not even required to watch all the nominated films in each category until this year. With a new change in the regulations, members of the Academy must watch all nominated films in each category in order to be eligible to vote in the final round of the Oscars.

The fact that this was not a requirement leads to questions about the credibility of past Oscar wins.

The regulation change is a result of multiple voters admitting that they never watched “The Brutalist,” a film that earned 10 nominations and won three awards in 2025.

Rather than serving as a genuine celebration of artistic achievement, award shows increasingly feel like spectacles designed to showcase power and influence in the entertainment industry. Established studios, record labels and industry insiders often dominate the voting process, leaving little room for independent artists and filmmakers. Each ceremony sparks a flurry of debate over snubs, undeserved nominations and controversial winners.

Compounding this are moments of misconduct that overshadow the awards themselves, from Will Smith punching Chris Rock onstage to Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s VMA acceptance speech. These incidents contribute to the perception that award shows are less about art and more about celebrity excess.

Furthermore, award show viewership has been steadily declining for years, reaching an all-time low in 2025. This downturn can be attributed to a multitude of factors, including a change in media consumption habits, declining movie theater attendance and a growing resentment towards out of touch celebrities.

In a time marked by rising costs of living and increasing unemployment, the glamour of awards season feels disconnected from reality. The one night of glitz and glamor pales in comparison to

the harsh reality that most people are facing in their daily lives.

The rise of social media and short form content has also fundamentally changed how audiences engage with entertainment. Long, drawn out ceremonies like the Academy Awards no longer hold widespread appeal.

Ultimately, while awards shows once held cultural significance, their declining credibility, relevance and viewership suggest they no longer resonate with modern audiences. In an era that values authenticity, these ceremonies risk becoming relics of an entertainment industry increasingly out of step with the public they claim to represent.

OUSC positions open as the new year rolls in SOPHIA CURRAN Political Editor

Oakland University’s Student Congress (OUSC) is currently accepting applications for three executive positions for the Winter 2026 semester cycle.

President Marcus Johnson and his administration are carrying on the legacy of their last administrative cycle. However, three major executive positions are now left open as students graduate and move into local, state and even national-level service roles.

The OUSC Executive branch is currently seeking applicants for the following positions: Vice President One of the most vital roles for student government, the President Johnson states that the vice president serves as the “President’s chief partner in leadership and internal operations.” The role entails overseeing executive initiatives, backing the Legislature’s decisions and work and helping create fluidity between student leaders, the OU administration and campus partners.

Finance Director At OUSC, the financial director oversees the internal finances, budgeting tracking, financial compliance and ensures that students are managed appropriately and effectively.

Marketing Director The marketing director will be responsible for how OUSC branches out and communicates across campus. They will be in charge of communications, social media branding and other forms of campus

engagements. They are important in ensuring that students receive the information and resources they need on campus.

“Joining OUSC gives students a direct opportunity to shape campus life in meaningful ways,” Johnson said in a statement to The Oakland Post. “Student leaders help influence policy, advocate for student needs, manage resources that directly impact student organizations and serve as a bridge between the student body and the university administration.

The impact of these roles is tangible, whether it’s improving access to resources, increasing transparency or strengthening student voices in decision-making spaces.”

For the now former members who are now working hard to provide to the community, this includes former Vice President Nia Matthew.

On Dec. 19, Matthews decided to step down as vice president of OUSC to follow an internship opportunity in Washington, D.C. with Michigan Senator Gary Peter’s office.

“Student Congress is grateful for the time and effort she has dedicated to servicing the student body during her tenure and we wish her success and fulfillment in this exciting next step in her journey,” Johnson said.

Since stepping down and the graduation of other students, Johnson and the OUSC Congress have been dedicating themselves to work through the gaps while they wait for positions to be filled.

“The work of Student Congress will continue without interruption; our administration remains fully committed to advocating for the needs of all

students, maintaining transparency and ensuring continuity in leadership and operations,” Johnson said when speaking on Matthews’ absence. “We will follow the procedures outlined in our governing documents to address this vacancy and appoint a new Vice President in a timely and responsible manner.”

Pirates of the Caribbean has been a hit Hollywood franchise and one of the most popular rides at Disney World. Improbably, it is also returning as a revenue model for the world’s superpower.

Beginning in October, the Pentagon, under the revived Trump administration, began conducting strikes on drug-running vessels operating out of Venezuela.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and President Trump were each afforded ample opportunity for punchy oneliners, and in ordinary times, escalation likely would have ended there. Posturing.

But 2026 is not ordinary. It is blockbuster.

On Dec. 10, The Skipper, a Guyana-flagged oil tanker linked to Venezuela, was seized in the Caribbean. At that moment, history began to move from poetry into rhyme.

Pro-corporate colonialism is not new. It is among the oldest political tactics on record. During conflicts such as the Seven Years’ War, privateering functioned as both a military instrument and a profit engine of empire.

Fought between Britain and France wherever their empires collided, the Seven Years’ War was the first conflict waged at a truly global scale.

Both empires faced the same constraint: Tax revenue was finite. No state, however ambitious, could afford to station taxpayer-funded naval forces along every mile of ocean, waiting to take a cannonball for king and country.

They arrived, independently, at the same solution.

Outsource violence. Private corporations were

empowered to recruit men willing to risk their lives not for patriotism, but for profit.

History has been kind to some of these men. Sir Francis Drake is remembered as a knight, his piracy laundered into legend, his legacy repackaged for modern entertainment — his treasure-hunting descendants now rendered playable by video game studios.

One wonders whether four centuries from now developers will build a blockbuster around the descendants of Erik Prince, hunting for treasure with nothing but a family name and a battered Breitling Emergency as their final clue.

America in 2026 faces a familiar predicament: soaring national debt, a growing elderly population and an insatiable military-industrial complex. The menu is

short, and every option is a Faustian bargain.

Washington appears to have chosen a devil it knows.

Maritime madness. A thirst for treasure. The only difference is that the gold is liquid now.

Washington watchers like to joke that pizza deliveries near the Pentagon can predict the outbreak of war. This journalist suggests adding logged hours of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag in the Washington area to the pundit class’s expanding arsenal of crystal balls.

President Trump has floated a $1.5 trillion military budget. He has also declared that America will exercise indefinite control over Venezuelan oil.

Rather than running up an even higher tab on the national credit card, the administration appears to be reaching for an older solution to finite tax dollars, domestic strain, and economic stagnation: sail the seas for gold.

Privateers, after all, are remembered kindly in hindsight. Their violence is softened. Their crimes are edited. The blood in the water is quietly erased.

That leaves Americans with a choice. Decide how to feel about this now or let history decide for them.

Sinking drug boats with aerial strikes and seizing oil tankers is, unquestionably, a terrible thing. But history reminds us, however, that sinking the Spanish Armada so thoroughly that legends persist in Ireland of survivors reshaping the population along the southern coast may have been worse.

The difference between atrocity and adventure has always been paperwork — and time.

Water, an essential of survival, all too often becomes a weapon against the most vulnerable, whether amid wartime or a struggle to keep up with a rising utility bill. But whether in the midst of a fatal water crisis in Sudan or in Metro Detroit, a root cause is often shared: the commodification of a human right.

In 2010, The United Nations (UN) adopted a resolution to formally recognize water as a human right. Water is an essential to leading a life of dignity and having access to healthcare and adequate sanitation–rights affirmed in the 1948 UN Declaration of Human Rights. However, although legislation can harbor the best of intentions, the gap between legal codification and the realities communities face is far, and in many cases, growing.

In Sudan, more than two years of civil war have forcibly displaced over 11 million people, exacerbating famine and water scarcity in a country pressed by war. In April of 2023, tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces and a paramilitary unit, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), spilled over into full-scale fighting. At its heart is a burgeoning crisis over resources, with water being the greatest cost.

In the recent past, several conflicts can be attributed to disputes over governing resources.

Although the country is rich with natural resources — from the Kordofan oil fields to the Blue and White Nile Rivers —Sudan’s desertified pockets present flash points for dispute over how a limited supply should be managed. Amid the destruction of war and waves of people fleeing drought conditions in the north, water systems have borne the impact.

Blue, have been documenting Sudan’s current state of resources.

“Sudan’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) infrastructure has been “severely, and, in some cases, deliberately, damaged,” Ahmed and Abdelgadir said.

While it is evident that artillery fire and competition for control of these facilities is responsible for the degradation, other causes are more insidious: displaced workers, the collapse of civil infrastructure and heightened insecurities as many feel that their state government can no longer protect Sudan’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation does not set clear expectations for managing the country’s water supply. The lack of governmental guidance on best practices has led to poor investments and underdevelopment in capacity-building. This is coupled by the challenges faced with reconciling the interests of different stakeholders, who may include ethnic populations that are at conflict with one another. These factors have all stood in the way of building a robust water system, the lack thereof a wound exposed by a dire situation.

Now, panning to the Great Lakes region, water accessibility remains a problem in industrialized nations as well.

Even as a beneficiary of one of the world’s reservoirs of freshwater, Detroit residents grapple with the lasting toll of a previous water crisis. And while the scale is smaller than Sudan’s, a common cause can be found: the poorly informed decisions of local governments.

In 2014, The Detroit Water and Sewerage

Department (DWSD) conducted the largest mass water shutoffs in U.S. history, leaving over 20,000 residents without water.

Leading up to the shutoffs, DWSD documents revealed it had undercharged water customers in previous pay periods, citing a debt of $89 million in uncollected costs. After the department terminated water services in the city, water coalitions stepped in to try and fill the gap by distributing bottled water to affected families, who then rationed it across household activities.

Years later, after a new payment plan was introduced to help customers catch up on missed payments and offer fairer rates to the lowest income households, many Detroiters still suffer. For some, bills are at an all-time high.

On Dec. 17, at a joint session held by DWSD and Detroit’s Water Advisory Council, Detroit resident Danita Wilson complained of accumulating $3,000 in debt although her water usage had not changed. Others in attendance similarly expressed their frustrations with DWSD’s collection system, asserting their claim to water as a human right.

Whether it is a demand that exceeds supply in Sudan’s displacement camps or high water rates around the nation, barriers to water access present a domino effect, toppling other support-systems: healthcare, home and family.

The collapse hits children hardest. Water shutoffs

not only create an unsafe environment for families but can, under state law, render a home inadequate for a child to remain in, according to a news release by the Healing Our Waters—Great Lakes Coalition.

If these shutoffs endure for more than three days, children may be transferred into social services and homes are predisposed to liens by collection agencies. Consequently, a terminated water supply affects all aspects of a child’s life, standing in the way of the security, education and the supportive domestic life so critical to healthy development.

Despite these bleaker histories, the rallying cries for water have been taken up by activists in Michigan and around the world.

A new bill, reintroduced in the Michigan legislature by a bipartisan coalition, proposes debtforgiveness and a more equitable, income-based rates calculation.

If passed, the state could become the first to offer a payment determination adjusted to income, setting a precedent for affordability, not exclusion.

Meanwhile, in territories at war, nonprofit aid workers who help dig community wells and deliver clean drinking water to victims are united in cause with activists; they maintain that water is not the claim of the few, but the right of all.

2026 World Cup leaves thousands without homes and water in Mexico ADRIAN JIMENEZ MORALES Editor-in-Chief

Scoring goals in matters of corruption, lack of transparency and human rights abuses, FIFA leaves the scoreboard 3-0 in favor of private economic gains—even before the ball hits the court for the 2026 World Cup. With almost eight years in the making, the 2026 soccer World Cup opens new horizons in North America by assembling a team of three host countries: Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Similar to previous tournaments, Mexico is likely to lose, now beyond the grass field as a legacy of abuses by FIFA kicks off a season of marginalization for locals.

FIFA’s record of human rights abuses With a renewed commitment to human rights, labor rights and environmental sustainability, FIFA has championed Mexico as a host country even when the partnership between them lacks any of the outlined commitments.

The previous World Cups in Russia and Qatar serve to understand the mechanisms that have left over 6,500 workers dead in the last decade and now threatens to leave more than 2,600 Mexican nationals without homes.

“The last two World Cups, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, received the worst evaluations from FIFA’s specialized group, according to the 2018 and 2022 bid reports published by the football governing body,” ESPN Sports reported.

For the 2018 World Cup, 21 workers were

killed as a result of abusive labor practices during construction and renovation operations, Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) reported.

By 6,500 migrant workers from across Asia had died preparing Qatar for its global tournament.

While the accusation of modern-day indentured servitude and the resulting deaths of thousands of workers caused policy changes inside FIFA and with its international partners, these came after coordinated attempts of censorship and misattributing responsibility.

After failed attempts to negate the human rights violations, FIFA reviewed the cases and created a report stating a “responsibility” to compensate those affected with the creation of a $45.8 million “legacy fund.” FIFA resisted calls from unions, representatives and affected families while avoiding specific clauses for impacted worker compensation in the fund.

Violation of the right to housing in Mexico Replicating the same lack of transparency, now in Latin America, BWI reported that FIFA denied and blocked investigations to ensure safe and fair working conditions in Mexico. While no workers have been reported dead in connection with the infrastructure building operations, “this refusal raises serious concerns about its human rights and labor obligations,” BWI said in a press release dated March 11, 2025.

Nonetheless, the right to housing has taken a blow, with the World Cup aggravating the gentrification problem Mexico City has had for years.

government, between July and October 2025, approximately 2,600 complaints of dispossession were registered,” Megantoicias MX reported.

Neighborhood organizations fighting for the right to housing explained that forced evictions have become more violent and recurrent in tourist zones near stadiums. They also accuse the real estate sector of co-opting the judicial power and the local congress.

FIFA’s commitment to human rights in partnership with Mexico results contradicting as the Mexican congress recently struck down protections to constitutional housing rights.

“We have all directly suffered from the real estate speculation,” Arturo Aparicio, a lawyer for a housing rights collective, said in an interview with Pie de Pagina. “Some of us have suffered evictions because of it and have seen the rent prices in the places we used to live triple or quadruple, with the buildings now used for Airbnb and other digital platforms for short-term rentals.”

Less water and more pollution In the neighborhood surrounding the Aztec Stadium—the most important venue for the tournament in Mexico—locals have also protested the shortage of water, coinciding with opaque construction operations that aren’t subject to scrutiny by the local authorities.

“In this area, water does arrive regularly, but through rationing: one day there is service and two or three days there isn’t,” Adolfo Lara, teacher and local resident, said in an interview with El Independiente.

“Allowing this type of construction in the upper areas of [the neighborhood] will increase demand and worsen the water shortage for those of us who already live here.”

The irregular construction of 30 buildings with private water tanks, in some cases owned by the television stations affiliated with the tournament, makes the situation critical even after the soccer teams leave the country.

“The law stipulates that every construction project must have an information banner indicating how many apartments will be built, who the responsible company is and who is managing the project,” Lara said. “None of this is being complied with. Absolutely none of these requirements are being met and despite the complaints, the authorities are not taking action.

This can only be explained by possible collusion between authorities and real estate developers.”

As water leaves the homes of thousands in the capital city, Alvaro Zavala, director of Mexico for climate, explained that only in Mexico there will be a CO2 emission of 9 million tons during the tournament—the equivalent of what a medium-sized city would emit in a year.

With FIFA’s lack of commitment to its labor and human rights protections, its sustainability efforts will likely advance global warming instead of mitigating it.

“Sustainability doesn’t fail due to a lack of ideas; it fails due to a lack of will and mechanisms to measure what is promised,” Zavala said. “Many times, sustainability remains only in discourse.”

Even before all participant countries are selected, thousands across Mexico are already counting their losses thanks to the World Cup. In the meantime, FIFA and the Mexican government’s commitment to human rights stands in stark contrast to their increased abuses in more areas than those seen before.

The 2025-26 College Football Playoff marks a turning point in the sport, delivering one of the most unpredictable and wide-open postseasons in recent memory and setting up a national championship matchup between the Miami Hurricanes and the Indiana Hoosiers.

With the expanded 12-team format fully in place, the playoffs rewarded conference champions while also allowing strong at-large teams to prove themselves on the field, not just on paper.

Indiana entered the postseason as the No. 1 overall seed after completing an undefeated regular season and defeating Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game. That perfect run earned the Hoosiers a first-round bye, giving them extra rest and preparation as the bracket unfolded around them. Indiana’s position at the top of the field immediately signaled that this playoff would look different from past years dominated by the same traditional powers.

Miami’s road was far more demanding. The Hurricanes qualified as an at-large team and were forced to play in the opening round, navigating a bracket filled with established programs and difficult matchups. From the start, Miami relied on explosive offense, aggressive defense and timely playmaking to survive and advance. Each round tested their depth and composure, but the Hurricanes consistently rose to the moment, turning

Following a non-conference slate that tested the roster against elite programs like Michigan, Houston, and Purdue, the identity of this team has been forged in high-pressure environments.

While Coach Greg Kampe’s signature zone defense remains a staple, the individual execution within that system has varied significantly, requiring a deep dive into player efficiency, offensive ratings (ORTG), and individual mechanics.

This report serves as a formal evaluation of the rotation, utilizing advanced metrics from the BartTorvik T-Rank model to distinguish between high-level execution and areas requiring immediate developmental attention. ​The Backcourt Stabilizers ​Brody Robinson | Grade: A+ ​Robinson has established himself as the premier “Pure PG” within the conference, currently logging a team-high 88.1% of available minutes.

He is a disciplined floor general who thrives on efficiency rather than raw volume, maintaining a 119.0 ORTG while shouldering a 23.1% usage rate.

One slide knock is his tendency to fall, especially in situations where he doesn’t need to.

It often leads to him being benched during crucial minutes so that he can stay out of foul trouble as his FC/40 (fouls committed per 40 minutes) is currently at a worrying rate of 4.3 per game. ​Impact and Mechanics: Garrett provides a unique blend of size and skill that allows him to operate as a “playmaking forward”.

His mechanics around the rim are precise, utilizing his 219-pound frame to absorb contact and finish effectively.

He is a dominant rebounding force, evidenced by double-digit boards against high-level opponents like Michigan and Northern Kentucky.

His ability to step out and knock down the occasionally timely three-pointer adds a necessary “stretch” dimension to Oakland’s frontcourt. ​Michael Houge | Grade: B+ ​The ceiling of this team remains largely dependent on Michael Houge, whose return from injury has fundamentally altered Oakland’s interior toughness.

Houge provides a masterclass in efficiency, maintaining a 60.1% True Shooting (TS) percentage and an effective field goal percentage of 55.1%.

He is a high-motor leader who excels at boxing out and securing contested rebounds, currently averaging a 16.1% defensive rebound rate.

Houge is particularly effective inside, shooting 56.1% on 2-point attempts.

His emerging ability to stretch the floor adds a tactical layer to the offense that was missing in November. ​Impact and Mechanics: Houge’s veteran impact is most felt in his physical defensive presence and his “garbage man” ability to score off offensive putbacks.

Mechanically, he is a disciplined interior finisher who uses his 228-pound frame to carve out space in the paint.

His motor allows him to out-work opponents for second-chance opportunities, providing a critical physical edge during Horizon League play. ​Wing Production and The Perimeter Game ​Ziare Wells | Grade: B ​Wells remains an athletic marvel whose advanced stats highlight both an explosive ceiling and technical limitations.

He carries a 113.8 ORTG and has proven to be a force on the glass with a 15.7% defensive rebound rate.

Wells is highly efficient when playing above the rim, converting 80% of his dunks and 62.7% of his attempts at the basket.

However, his overall impact is hindered by a heavy reliance on his left hand, often being forced by defenders toward his right where his efficiency drops.

This dependency frequently results in him settling for “far 2″ jumpers where he shoots only 35%.

​Impact and Mechanics: Wells is a dynamic transition threat whose impact is often felt through high-energy defensive plays and highlight-reel finishes.

Mechanically, he possesses an elite vertical leap that allows him to compete for rebounds above his 6’6” height.

His jump shot remains a work in progress, but his ability to hit game-winning shots—such as his buzzer-beater against Toledo—shows a high level of confidence and “clutch” ability. ​Brett White II | Grade: B​White fulfills a specific and vital role as the team’s primary perimeter specialist.

He maintains a 114.9 ORTG largely due to his perimeter volume, having attempted 90 threepointers at a 34.4% clip.

His 16.1% usage rate is one of the lowest among the starters, reflecting his utility as a floor spacer who does not turn the ball over frequently.

Posting a 114.8 ORTG and a 54.5% effective field goal percentage, he was arguably the Grizzlies’ most efficient wing and an essential floor spacer.

His absence has created a significant void in secondary shot creation that the team has struggled to replicate. ​Impact and Mechanics: Mashhour’s impact was most visible in his poise and confidence when driving to the basket fearlessly.

Mechanically, he showed solid feet and the ability to create his own looks at the rim.

Beyond his scoring, his defensive playmaking was a standout, evidenced by an impressive 2.5% steal percentage.

His ability to disrupt opponents on the perimeter provided a necessary defensive edge that Oakland now misses as he enters a four-to-six month recovery timeline. ​Developmental Challenges and Rim Protection ​Tuburu Naivalurua | Grade: B​Naivalurua has faced the difficult task of transitioning to the center position out of necessity.

Standing at 6’8″, he is an undersized forward asked to play the five, which contributes to Oakland’s struggles in rim protection.

Despite this, he maintains a 113.8 ORTG and possesses sophisticated footwork in the paint, shooting 64.0% on “close 2” attempts.

He is a productive interior presence with an effortless touch, but his 27.3% three-point shooting indicates he is still searching for a consistent outside game.

During our holiday, ESPN released a 30 for 30 titled, Paid to Play: Understanding College Sports in 2025. In this documentary episode, ESPN records and examines college athletes with NIL money and more importantly, the transfer portal.

If you have an interest in sports, especially for our Golden Grizzly athletes, I highly suggest watching this intriguing 30 for 30.

Over the past several years, the college athletics transfer portal has transformed the landscape of college sports. What was once a rare and often complicated process has become a normalized, even expected, part of an athlete’s career.

On the surface, the transfer portal appears to empower student-athletes by giving them greater freedom and control over their futures. However, as its use has skyrocketed, concerns have emerged about whether the portal is becoming a long-term problem particularly when it comes to competitive balance, team stability and the concept of loyalty in college athletics.

The transfer portal was designed to simplify the process for athletes who wanted to change schools.

Instead of navigating backdoor conversations and sitting out seasons, athletes can now publicly declare their intent to transfer and be contacted by other programs.

In theory, this promotes fairness and transparency.

Athletes who are buried on depth charts, mismatched with coaches or facing personal circumstances can find better opportunities elsewhere.

For many players, especially those at smaller schools, the portal has become a pathway to higher visibility, better resources and improved development.

Despite these advantages, the volume of transfers has raised red flags.

Every offseason now resembles free agency, with rosters turning over at unprecedented rates.

Coaches must re-recruit their own players annually while also scouting the portal for replacements. This constant churn disrupts continuity and chemistry, two elements that traditionally defined successful college teams.

Instead of developing athletes over four years, programs increasingly rely on quick fixes, prioritizing experienced transfers over incoming freshmen.

One of the most significant issues tied to the transfer portal is its impact on loyalty.

College sports have long sold the idea of commitment — athletes choosing a school, representing it with pride, and growing within a program.

Fans connect to players because they follow their journeys year after year. With the portal, that bond is weakening.

When athletes transfer multiple times in search of better playing time, NIL opportunities, or exposure, the line between college sports and professional sports begins to blur.

Loyalty is now being tested on both sides — players often feel little obligation to stay if coaches can leave for better jobs with minimal consequences and fans question how invested they should be in athletes who may only wear a uniform for one season.

The sense of tradition that once defined college athletics — rivalries, long-term player development and school identity — risks being overshadowed by short-term self-interest.

The portal also creates competitive imbalance.

Power programs with national exposure and resources can aggressively target top performers from smaller schools, effectively using them as talent pipelines.

While this is not entirely new, the ease of transferring noticeable shifts the balance of power even further toward elite programs. Mid-major schools often lose their best players just as they begin to shine, making sustained success more difficult and undermining parity across college sports.

There is also a developmental concern.

Frequent transferring can hinder athletes who never fully settle into a system, coaching philosophy or campus culture.

College athletics is meant to be an extension of education, not just a stepping stone to the next opportunity. When athletes are constantly on the move, academic stability and personal growth may suffer.

The transfer portal is not inherently bad. It has corrected injustices and given athletes agency that was long overdue.

However, without limits or safeguards, it threatens the foundational values of college sports.

If loyalty continues to erode, college athletics may lose what once made it unique — teams built over time, players growing into leaders, and schools representing more than just the next best option.

The transfer portal is starting to become a “free agency” just like professional sports. The athletes are not committing themselves to a four-year program, and instead they’re seeking personal success.

The challenge moving forward will be finding a balance between player freedom and preserving the integrity, identity and long-term health of college athletics.

If that balance does not exist, the transfer portal should be discontinued.

It is unfair to the college coaches who offer these players full ride scholarships to athletes in their respected four-year program. It is a selfish act. If you do not have loyalty to the program, then why play for it at all?

Golden Grizzlies split on the blacktop, show growth in Horizon League play MARYANNE SANFORD Sports Reporter

The Oakland University women’s basketball team experienced both sides of the spectrum during their Horizon League faceoffs at the OU Credit Union O’Rena, where they fell to Green Bay 78-63 on Thursday, Jan. 8, before bouncing back with a decisive 66-45 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday, Jan. 10, to earn their first conference win on the blacktop this season.

The Grizzlies’ weekend started with a challenging faceoff with Green Bay, a perpetual conference contender that capitalizes on its size and efficiency in the paint. Despite a strong defensive showing from the Golden Grizzlies, Green Bay’s interior scoring and early momentum proved to be too much to overcome.

Oakland opened the contest with a balanced offensive approach, as Layla Gold tied the score at 2 just over two minutes into the game. The Golden Grizzlies remained competitive early with Jasmine Dupree-Hebert knocking down a 3-point shot at the 5:13 mark to cut the deficit to one.

Green Bay quickly responded to take back control by going on an 8-0 run midway through the first quarter. A buzzer-beater 3-point shot topped the run and sent Green Bay into the second quarter with a commanding 21-9 lead.

Oakland struggled offensively in the opening period but responded in the second quarter with intensified defensive pressure and improved ball movement. The Golden Grizzlies forced several turnovers and began converting them into points, changing the energy inside the O’Rena.

Mackenzie Luehring sparked a run with a layup off a steal at the 6:21 mark, erupting Oakland’s transition offense. Angie Smith followed with an

and-one conversion, and Lianna Baxter connected from beyond the arc as part of the 6-0 run that cut the Phoenix lead to 34-23 with just over three minutes left in the first half.

The Grizzlies closed out the second quarter with strong defense, holding Green Bay without a field goal for the final three minutes. Oakland outscored the Phoenix 18-17 in the period and entered halftime trailing 38-27. Oakland forced six turnovers in the first half and recorded five steals, turning those defensive stops into 12 points.

Oakland’s momentum gained before the break proved difficult to maintain after halftime. Green Bay opened the third quarter with efficient shooting, going 7-for-10 from the field in the frame. Layla Gold briefly cut into the deficit with a fast-break 3-point shot.

Sereniti Roberts-Adams and Layla Gold contributed in the paint for Oakland, but Green Bay’s consistent scoring pushed the advantage to 59-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies showed resilience in the fourth quarter, delivering their strongest offensive performance of the night. Lianna Baxter hit a 3-pointer at the 7:11 mark and scored five of Oakland’s first eight points of the quarter. Luehring added an and-one layup as the Golden Grizzlies knocked down six consecutive field goals and went on a 6-0 run.

Despite finding their momentum and outscoring Green Bay 23-19 in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies were unable to overcome the early deficit and fell 78-63.

Angie Smith led with 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting while also adding five assists and two steals. Lianna Baxter finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and three 3-pointers. Makenzie Luehring added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Following the loss, Oakland quickly shifted their focus to Milwaukee and delivered one of its most complete performances of the season on Saturday, Jan. 10.

From the opening tip, the Golden Grizzlies set the tone with energy, physicality and efficient shooting.

Oakland drained three consecutive 3-pointers to open the game — two from Filippa Goula and one from Makenzie Luehring — immediately putting Milwaukee on its heels.

Oakland’s defense matched its offensive intensity in the first quarter, forcing five turnovers and collecting seven offensive rebounds to maintain control of the tempo.

Despite Milwaukee finding a brief push, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Grace Lomen to cap a 12-2 run, Oakland responded emphatically.

A 9-0 run closed the first quarter, with Layla Gold scoring on a layup, Makenzie Luehring adding a jumper and Filippa Goula sinking a floater with eight seconds remaining to give Oakland a 20-12 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies continued to dominate in the second quarter, opening the period with a 23-13 lead and maintaining pressure on both ends of the floor.

Oakland started the quarter shooting 4-for-6 while holding Milwaukee to just one field goal in its first seven attempts.

Oakland’s defense set the stage for a 16-3 run midway through the second quarter. Filippa Goula sparked the surge with a fast-break 3-pointer at the 8:42 mark, assisted by Makenzie Luehring. Oakland attacked the paint consistently, with Luehring converting a key layup at 6:59 to extend the lead.

Milwaukee managed just six points in the second quarter and two made field goals as Oakland closed the half with a near 20-point upper hand, leading 36-18. The Golden Grizzlies held the Panthers to 7-for-25 shooting in the first half and dominated the boards 23-13.

Oakland came out of halftime showing no sign of slowing down. Lianna Baxter opened the second half with a 3-pointer off an assist from Angie Smith, taking the lead to 39-20. Makenzie Luehring and Sereniti Roberts-Adams continued to score inside, while Filippa Goula added a pair of free throws to stretch the lead.

An 8-0 run later in the third quarter, capped by a Jazmine Dupree-Hebert 3-pointer, gave Oakland its largest lead of the game at 52-26. The Golden Grizzlies entered the fourth quarter leading 52-27 and firmly in control.

Milwaukee outscored Oakland 18-14 in the final quarter, but the outcome was never in doubt as Oakland secured the 66-45 victory.

Makenzie Luehring led the Golden Grizzlies with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Filippa Goula matched her with a career-high 17 points, converting all six of her free throws and knocking down three 3-pointers. Layla Gold added eight points, six rebounds and three blocks, while Jazmine Dupree-Hebert finished with six points and two 3-pointers.

With the split on the blacktop, Oakland showed both its defensive potential and offensive depth as conference play continues, using the dominant win over Milwaukee as momentum moving forward.

The Grizzlies will go on the road to take on Detroit Mercy on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. in Calihan Hall.
