HIGHER INTEREST RATES RISK STIFLING HOSPITALITY GROWTH
UKHospitality is urging the Chancellor to represent the views of businesses during his critical talks with banks tomorrow, pressing for flexibility on loan repayments. With the right economic conditions, hospitality has the potential to grow its economic value by £29 billion by 2027 but in the worst-case scenario, it could contract by £4 billion.
Flexibility by Government and banks on repayment terms, including Covid loans, are a critical part of avoiding that. This should include extension to loan terms, options to move to interest-only payments or delay payments, and flexible ‘Time to Pay’ arrangements from HMRC for tax payments.
UKHospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said: “Hospitality has a proven record of delivering growth and creating jobs, and we want to achieve that £29 billion economic boost by 2027. However, steep increases in interest rates will quickly stifle growth and squash that potential.
“Hospitality has significant levels of business borrowing, including £10 billion alone from the pandemic, and it is a worrying situation if businesses have no choice but to prioritise loan repayments over business investment.
“Combined with other cost pressures across energy, food and drink, this is quickly becoming a ticking time-bomb that needs urgent attention.
“A direction from the Chancellor to banks to adopt a flexible approach to business borrowing and repayments would be a lifeline for many and should be a top priority for the Chancellor tomorrow during his talks with major lenders.
“We want to continue our track record of delivering growth and creating jobs, and the last thing we want to see is more businesses lost to circumstances out of their control, so I would urge the Chancellor to work closely with the banks on providing much-needed support to hospitality businesses.”
HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES URGED TO RESPOND TO VISITOR LEVY CONSULTATION
As the Scottish Parliament’s consultation on the proposed visitor levy opens, venues are encouraged to respond and outline the impact it will have on their business.
UKHospitality Scotland
Executive Director Leon Thompson said: “The introduction of the visitor levy represents yet more red-tape being forced upon hospitality, at a time when businesses are under pressure across the board from increasing regulation and rising costs.
“I would urge businesses to take the time to respond to the Scottish Parliament’s consultation and outline the impact this will have on their businesses and the local tourism economy. It’s critical that hospitality’s voice is heard and that politicians
understand just how detrimental this levy could be to Scotland’s reputation as a tourist destination.
“UKHospitality Scotland will be robustly representing the views of the sector in its response; pointing out the consequences of its introduction on businesses, consumers and Scotland’s global competitiveness.
“We’ll also be stressing the need for ringfencing of funds to be spent on hospitality and tourism, if the levy is introduced as the Scottish Government proposes. If that is the unfortunate outcome of this consultation, those funds must be spent effectively to protect and enhance Scotland’s reputation on the world stage.”

PERNOD RICARD UK TO DISTRIBUTE SOVEREIGN BRANDS’ PORTFOLIO OF SUPER PREMIUM WINES AND SPIRITS
Pernod Ricard UK today announces that it will commence the distribution of Sovereign Brands’ super premium portfolio of wine and spirits, including Luc Belaire, Bumbu Rum, McQueen & The Violet Fog and Villon, effective 1 July 2023. The developing collaboration between the two premium suppliers will see Pernod Ricard utilise its extensive distribution network, deep market knowledge, and unparalleled expertise to unlock new growth opportunities for Sovereign’s wine and spirits brands in the UK. Minimum unit pricing reduces alcohol-related harm to health says Public Health Scotland
Public Health Scotland (PHS) has published the final report on the independent evaluation of the impact of minimum unit pricing (MUP) for alcohol in Scotland. Evidence shows that MUP has had a positive impact on health outcomes, including addressing alcohol-related health inequalities.
It has reduced deaths directly caused by alcohol consumption by an estimated 13.4% and hospital admissions by 4.1%, with the largest reductions seen in men and those living in the 40% most deprived areas. MUP led to a 3% reduction in alcohol consumption at a population level, as measured by retail sales. The reduction was particularly driven by sales of cider and spirits through the off-trade (supermarkets and shops) products that increased the most in price. Evidence from a range of data sources shows that the greatest reductions were amongst those households purchasing the most alcohol, with little impact on households purchasing at lower levels.
For those people with alcohol dependence there was limited evidence of any reduction in consumption and there is some evidence of consequences for those with established alcohol dependence on low incomes, that led them to prioritise spending on alcohol over food. At a population level there is no clear evidence of substantial negative impacts on social harms such as alcohol-related crime or illicit drug use.
The evaluation report shows that while the impact on alcoholic drink producers and retailers varied depending on the mix of products made or sold, there is no clear
evidence of substantial negative impacts on the alcoholic drinks industry in Scotland as a whole.
Clare Beeston, Lead for the evaluation of MUP, Public Health Scotland said: “We have seen reductions in deaths and hospital admissions directly caused by sustained, high levels of alcohol consumption, and this is further evidence that those drinking at harmful and hazardous levels have reduced their consumption. MUP alone is not enough to address the specific and complex needs of those with alcohol dependence who will often prioritise alcohol over other needs, and it is important to continue to provide services and any wider support that addresses the root cause of their dependence.
“Those living in the most socioeconomically deprived areas in Scotland experience alcohol-specific death rates at least five times greater than those living in the least deprived areas. Alcohol-related disorders are a leading contributor to health inequalities in Scotland.
“Overall, the evidence shows that MUP has had a positive impact on improving health outcomes, including alcohol-related health inequalities, and can play a part in addressing the preventable harm that affect far too many people, families and communities.”

WHAT DO LENDERS REQUIRE BEFORE DECIDING TO LEND?
The hospitality sector has taken a proverbial battering on all front in recent times, virtually all from factors outwith its control. And consequently hospitality businesses are frequently seen as “too high” risk by lenders and so are struggling to access finance.
Even in these challenging times though, the increase in diversity of lending does create opportunities to borrow which might otherwise not have been here. As well as the traditional high street bank lenders there are a range of others: bridging providers, alternative lenders like peer to peer and online lenders and commercial/ specialist lenders such as asset and debt financiers.
Each of those lenders shall have their own requirements and it is important to match-up with a lender appropriate to your business. But the bottom line is that there are lenders out there who are prepared to lend.
So the question then becomes how do you convince a lender to give you a loan for your business needs?
PURPOSE OF THE LOAN
First, give the lender a business plan. Show them that your business is solid and you have a strong track record of performance. Demonstrate to the lender what you could do with the borrowing. Be specific about how much money you need, what you will do with it and how you will pay it back.
After the lender understands your business, the purpose of the loan and the method of repayment, it will evaluate the lender’s risks by using the five Cs: Character
Collateral
• Capacity
• Capital Conditions.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHARACTER
Craig Darling Head of Banking cdarling@gilsongray.co.ukForemost on the list is character. If a lender doesn’t trust you or your business, they will not approve your loan request. It doesn’t matter how much collateral you have, it will not be enough to offset a lack of trust. The lender needs the confidence that the borrower has the experience, education and industry
knowledge to successfully manage the business, especially in challenging times. The borrower’s reputation plays a significant part in getting a lender loan. Your credit history will show your track record for repaying debts.
THE NEED FOR COLLATERAL
When a lender makes a loan, it determines a plan of how the borrower will repay the loan. If the borrower defaults on the loan, then the lender falls back on the collateral. A lender never wants to use the collateral to repay a loan, because the sale of the collateral may not be enough to pay off the loan.
Lenders like to take property and assets as collateral as a way to recover their loan in the event the borrower fails to pay as planned. However, another of the main lender advantages to taking collateral is that it helps focus the borrower on business and financial performance so to avoid business failure and nonservicing of loans.
CAPACITY TO REPAY THE LOAN
The borrower must show that it can repay the loan out of the company’s cash flow. The lender will analyse a company’s debt-to-income ratio and the amount of its free cash flow. Lenders like these ratios to provide a
cushion in case the business takes a downturn.
THE NEED FOR CAPITAL
Lenders feel more comfortable when the owner has their own money invested in the business. Lenders like to know the owner has “skin in the game” if the business fails. If the owner is not investing in their own business, why should the lender? When owners have more personal capital in the business, they will fight harder and sacrifice more to save a business and repay their debts.
OVERALL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS
Besides analysing the borrower, lenders will look at the overall economy, industry trends and even the direction of politics. They are thinking about factors beyond the control of the business owner that will affect the performance of the company.
The current economic climate is a tough environment for would-be borrowers to obtain funding. However there are lenders out there who want to and are prepared to lend. Understanding who is out there, their requirements and the process that lenders go through to evaluate their risks is essential to maximise your opportunity of making a successful loan application.

With the cost of living continuing to skyrocket and food and drink price inflation at a record high, this year consumers will increasingly focus their spending where they are likely to garner some type of benefit. As a result, loyalty programmes will play a hugely important role in attracting and retaining customers in 2023.
Using EPoS systems or white-labelling apps, operators can fully leverage these benefits by providing customers with ‘rewards’ and ‘giveaways’ that feel unique to them. This is thanks to the software’s ability to analyse everyone’s purchase history and then promote specific meals and drinks to meet the preference of each customer. This will enable operators to not only stay competitive, but also improve customer service over time, retain customer data for targeted marketing campaigns, and introduce loyalty and reward programmes on an ad hoc basis.
When it comes to the future of EPoS systems, we are already seeing loyalty schemes growing in popularity. We can expect to see a rise in subscription-based schemes –– and sustainability-focused loyalty programs – such as giving points for eco-friendly purchases and planting trees.
At the same time, these capabilities also positively benefit hospitality staff by providing frictionless, convenient, and time-saving transactions for customers. This in turn reduces pressure on staffing during labour shortages that have persisted over the course of 2022 and into 2023, allowing staff to focus on higher value-adding tasks such as interacting with customers and enhancing their experience. This personability element is an important factor when a customer is evaluating whether to return to a restaurant. The next few years will be crucial in the evolution of the EPoS system, with any probability of EPoS being solely self-service channels (app and kiosks) along with the concept of cashiers and queueing reduced even further. As customers’ expectations evolve and demand for quick, convenient, and time-saving transactions grows, we’ll likely see more operators go fully digital in 2023.
Reward your biggest fans with a loyalty app that keeps your clients hooked on great deals.
You make great food that visitors love. But you want to improve efficiency, incentivise high-margin item purchases, and boost positive feelings at purchase to encourage repeat custom.
That’s where we come in.
We build stylish loyalty apps for restaurants that solve common problems. Diners gain custom loyalty rewards on all purchases – and the benefits don’t stop there. Our custom digital products can reduce staff costs and boost profits. We do this by increasing efficiency for orders made in-restaurant and for takeaway.
Unlike other restaurant apps, your 5Loyalty app integrates with your POS across all channels so you can monitor all your orders in one place – and never get caught out.
Rewards at all purchase points
Everyone loves a deal. Give something back to your diners with loyalty rewards that incentivise them to return again and again.
Diners earn loyalty points whether they eat in, get delivery, or collect.

Complete POS integration
Keep track of all orders in one place with unique POS integration.
Accurately place orders with suppliers in advance of catering events with up-to-date order information. Everyone benefits with 5Loyalty.
The 5Loyalty app increases your diner’s positive feelings at purchase and looks great while doing it.
Whenever diners pay for their meal – whether that’s an order for takeout, collection, large event catering, or in-restaurant –we remind them of the loyalty rewards they’ve gained. Watching rewards pile up in the app is easy, and this loyalty card is one they can’t lose.
We combine the best contemporary app design with excellence in use. Diners will intuitively navigate the app to make orders, join a virtual table queue, settle their bill and more. You can customise rewards liberally across all purchase points. That way, you can incentivise orders of high-margin items and set minimum spend limits to maximise profit.
When diners have the freedom to order in-app and settle the bills themselves, you’ll reduce staff costs and boost table turnover. Increasing efficiency has never been so convenient. The app is the only one of its kind to offer complete integration with your POS so you can keep track of all your orders in one place.
