Terry Fox Run Sunday September 16th, 2012 In 1980, Terry Fox set out on his Marathon of Hope with a simple objective; informing Canadians of the importance of finding a cure for cancer. Running an average of 42 kilometres every day he was forced to end his run on September 1, 1980 when cancer spread to his lungs. He didn’t make it across the nation but he did win the hearts of every Canadian. As one woman put it, “he makes you believe in the human race.” By February 1st, 1981, Terry’s dream of raising $1 for every Canadian was realized. The Terry Fox Marathon of Hope fund totaled $24.7 million for cancer research. To date, the foundation is responsible for supporting close to $20 million in discovery-based research each year in Canada. We’ve all been affected one way or another by this horrible disease so on September 16th, go out and help fight for a cure. For more information on how to donate or participate in a run, please go to their website, www.terryfox.org. The Word on the Street Sunday September 23rd, 2012 Each September in communities from coast to coast, the public is invited to participate in Canada’s largest book and magazine festival. The event is held at Queen’s Park Circle and is completely free to attend. Highlights include the Great Books Marquee, which features a variety of hot titles including fiction, non-fiction, short stories and poetry; or the Workshop Marquee that offers a day of writing workshops; and the ever so popular kid programs where some of Canada’s most renowned children’s authors and illustrators present the best of children’s books. Hair Grow Technology’s Bio-Fen® product line is continually moving forward! We are introducing our two latest versions; Bio-Fen® Plus for Men and Bio-Fen® Plus for Women. These products have been assigned Natural Product Numbers (NPN’s) by Health Canada. aWe recognize that both men and women experience androgenic alopecia (AGA, or male / female pattern baldness) and have made some improvements to the original formulation based on the latest science to address their specific needs. You will notice that we now have additional The women’s formula is almost the same as the men’s formula. The mechanisms and results for complementary (Health Canada Approved) health claims on each product. the women formula is the same. The only difference is it contains silicon and iron instead of saw palmetto. Silicon has been shown to contribute to hair shaft strength and thus healthy hair growth. It also contains iron which helps prevent iron deficiency. A number of studies have related sub-clinical iron deficiency in women to diffuse hair loss/alopecia. We are bringing you two new products with doublethe number of capsules and triple The increased amount of SDG and other revisions to the regulations allow us to make some the number of health claims for men and four times the number of health claims additional health claims for Bio-Fen® Plus for Women. for women.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Women:

How does Bio-Fen® PLUS work?

As in the previous formulation, the fenugreek seed extract in both new formulas reduces excess blood lipid levels (hyperlipidemia). Fenugreek contains β-sitosterol, an active plant sterol, which has been shown to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase activity – the enzyme responsible for converting excess testosterone to DHT (which is the primary molecule that causes hair loss). The SDG (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside) from flax lignans in both formulas also decreases excess cholesterol - the building block of testosterone. Based on new research on the rate of metabolism of SDG in flax lignans (8-12 hours on average), the dosage in both products has been revised from once a day to twice a day for optimum results.

Twice the Strength! Twice the Power! Bio-Fen® Plus for Men: As before, the saw palmetto extract inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, and this action slows down the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) – the overabundance of which causes the miniaturization of hair follicles. This activity of the saw palmetto also helps to relieve the urinary symptoms of mild to moderate BPH for men. The saw palmetto that originally was an extract standardized to 45% free fatty acids, esters, and sterols while the new formula is a 4:1 extract to support the BPH claim. The product still contains these molecules for hair loss, but they are now at proprietary amounts based on our research so that the competition cannot duplicate our formula.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Men will also help to: • Relieve the urologic symptoms associated with mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia - BPH (e.g. weak urine flow, incomplete voiding, frequent daytime and night time urination).

• Reduce elevated blood lipid levels / hyperlipidemia.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Women will also help to: • Reduce elevated blood lipid levels/hyperlipidemia • Prevent iron deficiency. • Metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

How long must I use Bio-Fen® Plus? Bio-Fen® Plus for Men capsules are usually effective at stopping hair loss within the first two months. However, since healthy hair grows only about 1 cm each month, it may take up to three months before you notice that hair growth is increased or the rate of hair loss is decreased. Anyone experiencing new growth should see it within four months. In some people the original pigmentation may come back. Once you stop completely your hair growth pattern will slowly go back to the point where you started. However, some people may be able to go with a lower maintenance dose.

What is the quality of Bio-Fen® Plus for Men? Bio-Fen® Plus for Men is manufactured in Canada according to quality assurance specifications called Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This ensures that the ingredients are tested for their level of quality, potency & purity, prior to production and the finished product prior to sale. Hair Grow Technology (Bio-Fen® Plus) is a progressive company - we continually seek out the latest research on bioactive ingredients, and on regulatory updates in the natural health products industry. See our website to locate your nearest store that carries Bio-Fen® Plus.

Mary Kitchen Takes Us Inside The Toronto International Film Festival

As entertainment anchor of CityNews, Mary is known for her in-depth knowledge of all things fashion, music, television and film, keeping viewers on the pulse of the biggest entertainment happenings.

M

ary is a pro when it comes to covering the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), having interviewed A-list celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Clint Eastwood and Woody Allen. This year when TIFF takes over Toronto from September 6 to

16, CityNews will bring viewers closer to the action, with Mary reporting from the red carpet, gala screenings, and of course the hottest and most exclusive parties. On the Go sat down with Mary recently to chat about her TIFF memories and tips for covering one of North America’s biggest film festivals.

Describe a typical day for you during the festival. I always try to catch an early morning screening (with a cup of green tea). A quick visit to Hair on The Avenue in Yorkville for a blow-out while going over notes is also a must. I usually have several junkets or sit down interviews during the day and have had up to four red carpets in a day! I love it when a sit-down is in one of our city’s fabulous hotels. An interview at The Ritz usually means I can grab a bite. I love their lobster fish and chips! A day in the life of TIFF would of course not be complete without a festival party. The HELLO! Canada party is always great, and I cannot wait for The Shangri-La and Soho House to open. These will definitely be the TIFF hot spots this year. What was your best celebrity interview? There have been so many, but I’d have to say Woody Allen and www.onthego.to 17

otg | entertainment

George Clooney are my favourite interviews. I loved talking with Woody about his experience working with neurotic actors on set … hilarious and ironic. This year I am thrilled that Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are here with The Master. I’ve loved speaking with them in the past and look forward to interviewing them again … both of those guys can have a real conversation. When is the appropriate time to ask for an autograph or take a photo of a star? What’s the best way to approach the celebrity? In my job it’s never appropriate to ask for a picture or an autograph (unless the star asks because they want to tweet it). If you’re at a red carpet premiere, the big stars will almost always come out to talk to their fans and sign autographs, and they’re usually happy to see their loyal fans. What’s your favourite way to get a star comfortable chatting with you? I always like to talk about a scene they probably liked shooting in their film. I like to think my background as an actor helps me relate to actors I interview and their experiences. What is your favourite TIFF memory? I have a few! Mark Wahlberg helped me find my earring one year at a party. Bill Murray and 18 www.onthego.to

his family helped me get to my hotel room when I was locked out of the elevators with the wrong key. Also, Tilda Swinton was nervous one year and held my hand the entire interview! What celebrities and what movies are you most looking forward to seeing this year? This year I’m looking forward to seeing Javier Bardem, who is here for Sons of Clouds: The Last Colony and To the Wonder. For films, I’m excited to see the documentaries Shit Girls Say and West of Memphis. Argo and

Anna Karenina have great buzz. Bill Murray is also coming for Hyde Park on Hudson, and if I chat with him I plan on thanking him for his wonderful gesture last year (the elevator incident, see previous answer). Catch Mary’s TIFF coverage each weekday during the festival on CityNews at 5, 6 and 11pm on Citytv and CityNews Channel. Stay up-to-date on all of Mary’s celebrity interviews during TIFF by following her on Twitter @marykitchen.

PAT Institute Receives National Attention The Pre-Apprenticeship Training (PAT) Institute and industry partner the Ontario Electrical League (OEL) received national attention for a community initiative: a community summer camp program designed to give young adults an introduction into trades.

W

alter Pamic, Co-Founder of Power–Tek Electrical Services and OEL Board Member, was invited to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper to discuss barriers in the trade and other outreach initiatives. They also discussed how “organizations such as OEL and Pre-Apprenticeship Training Institute launched a new joint program dedicated to turning out qualified new entries for apprentices” by working with communities to introduce the skilled trades as a viable career option. As OEL President Stephen Sell explains, “there is a much greater skill set that the industry expects for those looking to begin an apprenticeship and PAT Institute’s training programs are designed around industry safety 28 www.onthego.to

and skill expectations. Their graduates meet and exceed these industry expectations.” With youth unemployment at twice the national average, Merit Ontario has also taken a leadership role in connecting people with industry to promote positive outcomes for young adults. Rui Cunha, Director of Operation for PAT, mentions, “our partnership with OEL and Merit Ontario allows us the ability to connect with the community. PAT has

been involved in community initiatives for years, not only because of the demand for skilled trade professionals but also because it is the right thing to do.” Merit Ontario President Frank Viti notes that “Merit has searched out the most reputable trainer who has experience working with entry level candidates and the PAT Institute is that trainer. Their reputation is not only built on their commitment to student

Keeping The Roof Over Your Head

By Mike Holmes

Every house has a roof, and every roof sooner or later, will need repair or replacing.

I

t’s out there every day, for years — expanding, contracting, drying, cracking, deteriorating, and aging. Even if you have shingles with a 25-year guarantee, their lifespan can be reduced by climate, geography and roof design.

Signs of damage • Torn, curled or missing shingles. • Wear around chimneys and vent stacks. • Excessive amounts of shingle granules in your gutters. You could have a leaking roof for years and not know it. In this age of vapour barrier, it’s possible for the plastic sheet in the attic to hold small amounts of water without soaking through the ceiling drywall. In the meantime, this water can cause mould and dry rot in the attic. At least every couple of years, hire a professional for an up close and personal roof inspection. There’s more to roofing than just shingles and nails. Roofing contractors understand decks, proper airflow and venting, flashing, ice and water shield, installation and — most important — safety. A good roofer will use fall arrest safety equipment. www.onthego.to 31

otg | home

When hiring a roofing contractor, ask the right questions: 1. Is your roofing team fulltime staff or sub-contractors? Think about it — a good roofing company invests in their workers. They train them and keep them if they’re skilled. 2. Are they insured? Bonded? Licensed? 3. Do they offer a written guarantee on workmanship? It’s not the same thing as the guarantee on the shingles. 4. How long have they been in business? Did you check their references? (Or did you find a flyer in your mailbox?) 5. Do they promise a thorough site clean up? Do they lay down tarp to protect your landscaping and paths? How long will the job take? Will they protect your home with a tarp if the job takes more than one day?

Y

ou might need a permit to re-roof. Don’t take anyone’s word for it. Call your local building authority. And while you’re at it, ask how many layers of shingles you can have. Two layers is usually the maximum. But I always recommend never having more than one layer. Shingles are heavy. Extra layers put a big load on your roof’s structure. In fact, that guarantee on your shingles is

often void if it’s placed on top of existing shingles. Also, read the terms of the manufacturer’s warranty. It often requires hanging onto the packaging wrap your shingles came in. I would strip the roof down to the decking, replace any weak or rotten boards, add new water and ice shield over the entire roof — not just the roof edges — then replace with new, high-quality shingles. It’s best to install shingles in warm weather because they get brittle in cold temperatures and can crack. But as long as it’s not below freezing, they can be installed year round. It makes more sense to repair the roof now rather than wait until spring — a lot of damage can happen over the winter.

Why a Mortgage Broker is a Better Deal – For You! Whether it’s your first time or your fifth time, shopping for a mortgage can often be confusing and even frustrating. Besides, who really has the time to research and compare mortgage lenders to ensure the best deal? Then there are all those crazy terms and acronyms — beacon scores, LTVs, IRDs and porting — it can make your head spin! Isn’t there an easier way?

T

here is indeed, and that’s where the expert care of a licensed mortgage Broker can be the life saver you’re looking for. Mortgage Brokers work for you, so they can offer more options than any one mortgage lender. Plus mortgage lenders — like MCAP — only work with brokers who have been thoroughly vetted and have a valid broker licence. They not only help find the best deal for you, they stay at your side every step of the way. There are four main advantages to using a mortgage broker: choice, advice, service and savings. Choice: Only mortgage Brokers can provide the wide range of mortgage products from various lenders to meet your specific financial needs. Advice: Mortgage Brokers offer alternatives in selecting a mortgage product and other financial services that are best suited for your situation.

Savings: Mortgage Brokers save you money by providing — on average — lower interest rates. According to a study* conducted by the Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals, home owners who renewed or renegotiated with a mortgage Broker reported an average rate decrease of 1.4% compared with 1.0% among all renewers. These four reasons are also why mortgage lenders like MCAP work solely through a national network of trained professional mortgage Brokers. MCAP and other independent mortgage lenders know that a mortgage Broker will help make a home purchase or renewed mortgage a positive experience for everyone. If you’re thinking about buying your first home, looking to renew your current mortgage or are curious if there is a better deal out there for your current mortgage, talk to a licensed mortgage Broker today and find out what they can do for you!

Service: Mortgage Brokers work with your schedule and are there with you from the first meeting to the final close.

Reptiles as Pets By Jen Mitchell and Laura Ducharme

The amount of reptiles that are being kept as pets in North America is rising. But before anyone goes off to see the lizard, they should be aware that reptiles are not highly adaptable to captive conditions, and they’re not low maintenance, inexpensive pets either. They have specific housing and environmental needs — space, heat, and light must be just right in order for them to thrive in captivity.

I

t’s important to create natural environments for a reptile’s complex movements such as running, jumping, hiding, burrowing and swimming. Proper hygiene and nutrition are also very important. For example, although snakes may only need to eat once a week, lizards need to eat twice a day. Their high protein diet also needs a balance of veggies and supplements like calcium and vitamin D. Reptiles can live to be 20 years old, so after a year or two when your kids are bored of them or Junior has moved out, guess who may be cuddling the charming and now 6 foot long snake? So you may ask — why would anyone have a reptile as a pet? Laura’s friend’s son Brandon loves his Ball Python, aptly named “Baller”. He buys dead, frozen, fuzzy mice from the pet store then warms them up with a hair dryer prior to feeding so that Baller can have the sensation that they are warm and alive. That’s so sweet … and slightly horrifying! He chose the ball python, a species originally from Africa, because they are worshiped as a god in African mythology. The ball python symbolizes earth. Some people are not fond of rep-

38 www.onthego.to

tiles and have Herpetophobia — fear of reptiles. Whereas Ophidiomaniacs — those with a love of reptiles — will tell you that turtles, frogs, lizards and snakes can be cute and cuddly too. Take the Bearded Dragon for example. They have been known to communicate emotionally with their eyes and give kisses with a lick of their tongue on your cheek. And you can’t drape a Saint Bernard around your neck like you can a pretty python. Kids can love frogs as much as they do cats. Turtles are fun pets too; who knew you could line up your red ear sliders and watch them go like a day at the races! Reptile owners say that it’s the way their pet feels and looks as well as the emotional bond to them that draws them in. There’s a woman here in Toronto that talks to her pet lizard in a high pitched cute voice, as if it was a fluffy white Persian kitten. Lots of love there! If you do decide that a reptile is the perfect pet for your family, please be mindful before you take the plunge. You wouldn’t get a dog from a puppy mill so don’t get your reptile from a wildcaught pet trader. Do your research and get one that is captive bred. Or better yet rescue one from a Reptile Rescue group. There are several in Canada.

HAVE YOU HAD A TRIP, SLIP OR FALL? KNOW YOUR RIGHTS… People are unfortunately injured everyday, crossing the street, walking in the mall or store, entertaining with friends at a club. In each case, you may be entitled to be compensated for your losses as a result of any injuries you sustained. As the injured person, you have rights that need protecting within the time limits permitted by law. At this point, it would be in your best interest to hire a trained professional lawyer to help you obtain the maximum compensation for your losses. Joseph Rizzotto and his team of professionals at the Rizzotto Law Firm have over 25 years of experience in dealing with complex injury cases and will help you recover and receive the support you deserve. They really care about your needs and rights. Joseph Rizzotto, (B.A. [Hons], M.A., LL.B., LL.M.) answers some common personal injury questions below, shedding some light on your rights. Q: I was at the grocery store and slipped on spilled liquid that was not cleaned up. What are my rights? The liquid obviously should not have been on the floor. The store has an obligation to keep its premises safe and avoid any situation of danger. It should have cleaned the floor and posted some type of warning sign to its customers. It is therefore negligent or at fault. As your lawyers, we will help you prove that the store is at fault. As a result, the store or its insurance company is responsible to compensate you for medical treatments you need, your loss of enjoyment, your pain and suffering, your out of pocket expenses and any loss of earnings. Q: As I reached for the pop bottle, the entire stack of bottles fell on my head. Do I have any recourse? The bottles were clearly improperly stacked and not secured. Therefore, the store created a dangerous

situation. This resulted in you sustaining significant bodily injuries. The store will suggest that you caused or contributed to the incident. With our experienced advise and assistance we will prove that the store created this situation and was negligent. Once this is accomplished, we will obtain compensation for you from the store or its insurer for your losses and pain and suffering. Q: I was walking on the sidewalk and tripped on a crack in the cement. Can I pursue the City for compensation? The crack in the sidewalk or the unevenness in the sidewalk has to be significant enough for you to seek relief from the City or its insurer. A very small crack or an uneven sidewalk barely visible to the naked eye will not result in any relief for you. Municipalities are traditionally tough adversaries. You have to prove everything to them to be successful

“It is important to hire someone that will carefully review and research each case individually in order that the appropriate action is taken quickly and is effective. Knowledge is the key.” — Joseph Rizzotto in seeking compensation. As your lawyers, we will guide you towards proving that the City was negligent and that you deserve compensation for your pain and suffering and losses. www.onthego.to 43

the biggest health myths By Michelle Betts

The weather’s getting colder and it’s time for fall. The Toronto International Film Festival is this month; there will be lots of great films to view … as well as the beautiful actors with their Hollywood bodies. This month I wanted to address the biggest Myths on health, so you can feel good and have the confidence as all those actors do on-screen. Myth #1: I CAN’T EAT CARBS This myth is the absolute worst. Carbohydrates are your body’s prime source for energy. If you avoid carbs all together you will be tired and your body will start feeding on other storages. Instead of avoiding carbs, I suggest limiting your carbs and opting for good, healthy carbs. An easy rule of thumb, don’t eat white carbs. A few examples would be to eat a piece of whole wheat bread over sourdough, brown rice over white, and a small sweet potato over a traditional potato. Also remember portion control, have a small serving with your meal. Myth #2: IF I DON’T EAT, I’LL LOSE WEIGHT This is so far from true. Whenever I hear someone tell me they aren’t really eating because they are trying to lose weight I want to shake them. The way to really lose weight is to eat small portions throughout the day. Meaning, eat small and healthy frequently. By doing this, it keeps your metabolism up and you burn more calories, not to mention you are never hungry so you don’t over in46 www.onthego.to

dulge. If you go long periods of time with no nutrition your body, once again, goes into the wrong storages to find energy. When you finally do eat, you store it as fat and lower your metabolism.

xoxo Michelle For more tips follow me on twitter @michellebetts

Myth #3: ALL I NEED TO DO IS CARDIO OK, yes, you do need to incorporate cardiovascular work in your fitness regimen to lose weight, however you do not need to be on a cardio machine for an hour. If you incorporate resistance training, with weights, you will lose weight faster than just performing cardio. When you work with weights you build muscle which in return, burns fat faster and raises your metabolism. Working with light weights also keeps you looking lean and toned. Whether you want to look like the actors you will be seeing this month on the big screen at the film festival, trying to lose some weight, or just looking to improve your health, don’t be fooled by these common myths. Follow these simple tips to feel and look your best this fall.

Ethanol is made from corn starch in Ontario. 30% of corn (protein and fat) goes back to feeding livestock. Oil is extracted from soybeans for biodiesel. 80% of the soybean (high-protein meal) is used as feed.

By substituting 10% ethanol in regular gasoline, farmers reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.3 million tonnes each year – equivalent to taking almost 440,000 cars off the road. Soybean biodiesel is more energy efficient and GHG balanced than corn ethanol.

Taste the enchanting regions of Spain and Portugal this month. A wonderful variety of Old World classics, and bold new flavours you may have never tried before.

Marqués de Cáceres Rosado 2011 (Rioja, Spain)

Great Wine D iscoveries

This has been a consistent favourite rosé of mine over the years because of its price/quality factor. A blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha, it’s pale pink in colour with an arresting bouquet of red berries. Light and elegant on the palate, its vibrant acidity prolongs the flavour of raspberries and wild strawberries. **** (88). Food match: paella or cold salmon. $12.95 • LCBO #622142)

Tony Aspler has been writing about wine for over 30 years. His latest book is “Tony Aspler’s Cellar Book.” Get more of his recommendations at www.tonyaspler.com

Quinta da Aveleda Loureiro Alvarinho 2011 (Portugal)

Alvarinho is the same grape as Albariño that is grown across the border in Spain’s Rias Baixas region. The wine is very pale in colour with a lime tint; minerally, spring flowers, lemon peel and white peach on the nose; dry, elegant, grassy-herbal and citrus flavours; light and crisply dry with a light spritz. Great value at the price. **** (88). Food match: seafood risotto; green salad. $9.95 • LCBO #89995.

Bacalhoa Tinto Da Anfora 2008 (Portugal)

A blend of Aragonez, Trincadeiro, Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pardevalles Prieto Picudo Rosado 2011 (Spain)

This rosé from Spain’s Tierra de Leon region is made from a local grape called Priero Picudo. It’s more pale ruby than pink and has a minerally, strawberry nose with a banana note (banana suggests a young newly fermented wine). It’s medium-bodied, fresh and dry with flavours of apple and strawberry and a light spritz on the tongue. **** (87). Food match: ham salad; grilled sardines. $15.95 • Vintages #739474

Gonzales Byass Tio Pepe Extra Dry Palomino Fino (Jerez, Spain)

There’s nothing like a chilled glass of dry sherry before dinner to stimulate the appetite. White gold in colour; this fino offers a nose of camomile, green nuts and sage; it’s light on the palate and very dry with flavours of green tea and nuts; it has an extraordinarily long finish. Serve chilled. Great value. **** (88). Food match: salted nuts; grilled sardines. $15.95 • LCBO #242669

Aviva Vino Filon Garnacha 2010 (Spain)

This full-bodied Grenache-based wine is a great bargain. Dense purple in colour, it has a nose of raspberries and licorice with a touch of coconut from the American oak with impressive balance and structure and a floral top note. It’s full and lush on the palate and will age well.

***** (90). Food match: duck breast; manchego cheese. $14.95 • Vintage #280602

UNKNOWN ROADS A BLUESFEST CYCLING ADVENTURE By Keith Luder

When Johnny offered me time on stage to fundraise for kids with cancer at The Windsor Bluesfest I said yes immediately. There was only one catch: I had to cycle there from Toronto. Would other cyclists join me? Will the roads be safe? How about the weather? A few weeks later it’s time to ‘just do it’.

T

he van arrived at the meeting spot and Albert ‘The Stallion’, ‘Nurse’ Michelle and Ben ‘The Rookie’ emerged from the darkness like human cargo smuggled across the border. Team Velocity kits were the first clues of a cycling adventure that would culminate at the Windsor Blues Festival, 400 km later. Keith ‘The Garminator’ had the route on his Edge 800 and after photos we hit the road. Traffic was light as we headed west on Eglinton but the sun was already strong and it was comforting to know we had 150

72 www.onthego.to

bottles of chilled water in the van. It wasn’t long before one of us hit the deck but there was no blood so it didn’t count. It didn’t take long to drop someone despite our talk before we left. Keith got something from the van but the others rode on, a good distance down the road as he watched them turn right instead of left. It was the beginning of several “off course” messages from Garmin. We got to know a certain segment of Parkside Drive very well as the Garmin rerouted back and forth. Luckily, a Tim Horton’s was

close by and we had a refreshing stop. We would get to know the Timmy’s menu very well on this trip especially the frozen drink section. As Garmin continued to reroute, Tanya ‘The Comeback Gal’ called from the van wanting to know where the heck we were and directed us back on course with her paper map. We were humming along now, nice tight formation over the rolling hills with Raymond ‘The Puller’ in his usual position up front. The temperature continued to climb and it felt like the hottest day ever. Monty Python sketches switched to talk of poorly fitting chamois, the benefits of certain creams and Nurse Michelle’s expert advice for one’s posterior. After lunch, dark clouds arrived to block the sun and cool us down with a light, brief shower. ‘Chipper’ Jessica burst into song, reeling off such classics as “my sex is on fire” which soon morphed into the delirious “my butt is on fire”. Finally we arrived at the Timmy’s

in Ingersoll where Keith talked Michelle out of rolling around on the cold floor. Cyclists already had a poor image in these parts and thankfully, she was able to keep control! Herb got impatient and invented an electrical thunderstorm telling us we only had one hour to avoid it. We pedaled strongly to our hotel in London and were surprised when the van was not there to greet us. The reroute to the beer store was really appreciated and we drank the best blondes ever. A great après bike meal followed with everybody tired from the long, hot ride but in great spirits determined to get an early start next morning for stage two to Windsor. Our challenge was maintaining interest as we cruised down long, Roman like roads that went on forever without any change in scenery. It was so monotonous that Jessica yelped with joy when we came across wind turbines slowly moving in the heavy air. Raymond couldn’t take

the steady 30k per hour pace anymore and twitched his sprinting muscles into a brief breakaway just before we stopped in Twin Peaks for a coffee. Pictures of tractors and other farming technology hung prominently on the walls and I remembered the sign by the road which had said “Farmers feed cities”. We wanted iced coffees but were told they weren’t on the menu so we ordered coffee with ice on the side and got lots of funny looks when we combined them. Herb amused the locals by putting a large amount of salt in with the sugar! On the road again and Herb yelled out “Flaaaaaaat”. We all pulled over, eager for a change of activity when the loud popping sound repeated itself. When the bang sounded a third time we realized that the locals were shooting their rifles. How many points for a cyclist? We got back on the bike in a hurry and sprinted away from those crazy people!

Lake St. Claire was sparkling when the police showed up. A police escort will cure a very sore butt and tired legs. The sirens announced us and the Camaros lit up like Christmas trees. How wonderful it was when the traffic stopped and people cheered us. We were ecstatic when we reached the hotel and eager to celebrate. The atmosphere was electric as we entered Bluesfest and hugged John who had challenged us to cycle from Toronto. Onstage in front of 10,000 merry people, Herb soon had the crowd in a generous mood. I’ll never forget the man who kick-started the donations by running to us, fist pumping, yelling “Tour for Kids yeah, Tour for Kids yeah” with a $100 bill in his hand. Our work done, we could now relax and enjoy the great music of Alto Reed and Mark Farner.
