March is here! The gateway to nicer weather and greener pastures! I think we can agree that this winter has felt long but March brings signs of sunnier days to come. For instance, March 10th is daylight savings and the official first day of spring is March 20th. How can you not feel some sort of excitement about that? March is a long month so here are some events happening around the city that may help pass the time and help get you out of those winter blues. Canadian Music Week Monday March 19th – March 24th, 2013 Now in it’s 31st year, Canadian Music Week is a premiere entertainment event in North America that focuses on the business of music; full of informative conferences, trade exhibitions, award shows, film festivals and of course the country’s largest new music festival. CMW spans six nights of performances with 1,000 showcasing bands at more than 60 live music venues throughout the city. Catch artists like Coheed and Cambria, Matt Mays, Metric, The Grapes of Wrath, The Wooden Sky, Heart, Two Hours Traffic, and many, many, many more great bands. For a full list of seminars, bands and show times visit www.cmw.net. Associated with CMW is the Canadian International Comedy Fest. This year’s guests include Dave Foley, Sandra Bernhard and Morgan Murphy. For a full listing and locations to the comedy clubs, visit www.canadiancomedyfest.com

Another exciting feature of CMW is the CMW Film Fest that runs from Wednesday, March 20th to Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 at the Tiff Bell Lightbox. CMW Film Fest presents a mix of movie premieres, retro rarities and limited engagements. From drama to comedy to documentaries to Q&A’s with some of the films’ stars, this is an event not to be missed. This year's highlights include, Ain’t In It For My Health: A Film About Levon Helm; Spring Breakers starring James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens; Bad Brains: A Band In DC; and Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, which happens to be a Canadian Premiere. For a listing of show times visit www.cmw.net/festival/cmw-film-festival.

60 years Celebrating

of

CBC's HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA by Darren C. Jacob

One of my fondest childhood memories is gathering around the television on a Saturday night with my family to watch CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada. I recall the animated cries of joy as our team won, and lowly moans when they painfully lost; I recall classic rivalry games between the Leafs and the Canadiens, where my grandfather would be cheering for the Habs and me for the Leafs; and best of all I was allowed to stay awake way past my bedtime to watch the game! To this day I still gather around a television with my family on a Saturday night to watch Canada’s favourite pastime in all its glory — of course, featuring the colourful commentary of two of Canada’s most well-known personalities — Ron MacLean and Don Cherry.

C

BC’s Hockey Night in Canada is an integral part of our nation’s television programming. Now in its 60th season, it’s bringing with it a few new changes. Scotiabank Hockey Tonight, the weekly pre-game show, has a new rendition of its theme song “Hockey Tonight” performed by Colin MacDonald of The Trews, new animations, and a few new in-studio personalities. Joining host Ron MacLean are hockey insiders and analysts Elliotte Friedman, P.J. Stock, Glenn Healy, Kevin Weekes, and Andi Petrillo. I’d like to point out that Petrillo has the distinct 12 www.onthego.to

title of being the first full-time female Hockey Night in Canada in-studio personality! This team of knowledgeable insiders give viewers insight to the game and news from around the league. The excitement starts from the beginning of the pregame until the final whistle is blown and then some. Of course a Saturday evening wouldn’t be the same without Ron MacLean and Don Cherry on Coach’s Corner — Ron with his wit and knowledge of the game and Don with his unique suits, expert insights, and sometimes controversial comments bring pure entertainment during the

first period intermission. I can’t help but think of the Odd Couple as I watch them interact and banter, not always agreeing with one another. I think most would agree it is a great segment of the broadcast. CBC hosts the biggest hockey night of the week. Catch great games featuring your favourite Canadian teams, the Original Six; watch as new rivals battle it out, and witness marquee players make unforgettable plays. And don’t forget CBC is also Canada’s exclusive home of the Stanley Cup Final. Now that social media is such a major player in today’s society,

The new-look in-studio team for CBC's Hockey Night in Canada consists of (clockwise from top left) Glenn Healy, P.J. Stock, Kevin Weekes, Andi Petrillo, Elliotte Friedman and host Ron MacLean. Photo courtesy of CBC

CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada has really jumped on board and made the evening more interactive and entertaining with the launch of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada: 2nd Screen, presented by Budweiser. Fans can log in to CBCSports.ca during a broadcast and interact with the game and other fans from across the country. Sign in using your Facebook login and test your knowledge by trying to predict team and player performances,

collect points and win weekly prizes. There will also be a grand prize at the end of the season for the fan with the most points. Follow the standings with a live scoreboard that tracks users’ point totals. Other interactive features include live Twitter feed, live NHL scoreboard, schedule of upcoming Hockey Night in Canada games and much more. Even though it’s a short season with only 48 games per team, I’m sure we are happy

hockey is back! Personally, I feel that CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada is a part of our heritage. It has brought millions of families and friends together throughout the last 60 years of broadcasting and they have entertained and educated viewers on the great game of hockey, helping build it to great heights. I hope to spend another 60 years with my kids, and hopefully their kids, watching CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada. www.onthego.to 13

so many things to do for

March Break by Alana Anderson

March break, spring break, winter break. Whatever you call it, you must know that this week is racing around the corner towards us. For me March break is a time to relax; a time to take it easy and get myself together.

I

myself don’t have any children, so I can actually reap the rewards of some downtime. For parents though, March break is almost like a test: “How sane can you stay with incredibly bored kids running around your house?” A week like this can take lots of planning, so better get started! Have you booked a family vacation? Have you racked your brain for every time-consuming craft you can think of? Are you planning play date after play date? Everyone knows it’s always a good idea to plan ahead, so here are some little suggestions for having a memorable week. A true Canadian would use any chance they get to jet out west for some beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery. Truth be told, to do a ski trip in Banff, Alberta or Whistler, BC is relatively inexpensive in the spring. Conditions are unbelievable on the mountains, towns and villages are slowed from the regular hustle-and-bustle they see in holiday seasons, and prices drop ridiculously! If you’re not an outdoorsman, these destinations boast some of the best spas, malls, restaurants and hotels in Canada. Although once you see the mountains, you’ll undoubtedly want to be on top of one. Another popular March break destination would be a warm trip down to America’s sunshine state, Florida. Whether travelling with kids in tow or planning for a relaxing vacation for two, the amount of things to do and places to see are endless in Florida. Of course Florida is home to some of North America’s biggest amusement parks like the famous Disney World, and Universal studios. Don’t forget to pack your tackiest plaid golf 16 www.onthego.to

shorts, because to golf in Florida is an experience you won’t forget anytime soon (cue alligator eating golf ball in the water hazard). Florida is also one of the best places to go for shopping, considering its little “walkaround” towns, jam-packed with many different styles of restaurants and shops. Even on a rainy day you won’t have a hard time finding something to do; this sunny state has an almost endless list of aquariums, museums, historic tours, water parks, and shopping malls to wander. Granted not everyone can afford to jet out of the province for a little fun, so why not plan a nice “Staycation”. Take the kids to some of your favourite spots around town, for example: The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Ontario Science Centre, The Toronto Zoo or The Royal Ontario Museum. Despite popular belief, learning this way can actually be really fun! Your kids will love having you teach them about cool and interesting things, and you’ll love the look of enlightenment they keep on their face throughout the day. March break is also a great time to meet up with loved ones; plan a lunch with Grandma and Grandpa, or invite all your friends over for a movie or game night. Or get active! Go to High Park for a nature walk, or invent your own game to play in the backyard. Whatever it is that you plan to do, the most helpful piece of advice I can give is this: Take everything one day at a time. Cherish these small periods of freedom we get. Spend every second you can with your loved ones, and truly regard March Break as your week. Focus on fun and family, and you are guaranteed to have a good week.

World Plumbing Day:

How Healthy are your pipes? St. Patrick’s Day might be the main event in March. But how much fun would it be if the toilets didn’t work? Most people don’t realize how important plumbing is until it’s gone — and they learn fast. Before the first pint of green beer is poured we should all pay our respects to World Plumbing Day.

E

very year on March 11th we honour the work and dedication of plumbers. Without the skills of these fearless soldiers modern day life wouldn’t be possible. Think about it: How many times a day do you depend on the work of a good plumber? When you flush a toilet, take a shower, brush your teeth,

24 www.onthego.to

make coffee, wash dishes — and that’s just in the morning! So in the spirit of World Plumbing Day make sure you have a healthy set of pipes. There are two problems most homeowners face when it comes to plumbing: Low water pressure and leaks. And there are plenty of reasons for both.

By Mike Holmes

Narrow supply line In older homes, the supply lines from the municipality are smaller in diameter than today’s standard, which will cause low water pressure. If the main water intake is only ½" pipe you won’t have good water supply throughout your home. Undersized piping can’t handle the flow demands of a modern household. You should have the supply line upgraded to ¾" minimum. Bad plumbing Another reason for low water pressure is bad plumbing jobs in the past. Renovations or additions that altered the plumbing lines, or even some badly done repairs can create flow restrictions and pressure drops. An amateur or bad plumber can make a mess of your lines — using inadequately sized piping, with too many elbows, bad joints or supply lines taken off other lines incorrectly — creating what I call spaghetti plumbing. Corroded piping A lot of piping is galvanized steel, not copper. It’s one reason for a loss of water pressure in older homes. Galvanized piping corrodes on the inside and

deposits build up that block and severely reduce the water flow. The best solution is to remove galvanized piping and upgrade it to new copper or PEX. But this can be a very expensive job — and one for the professional plumber only. Leaks Replacing the pipes in your home is expensive. That’s why some homeowners only replace parts of their home’s plumbing. They’ll upgrade the most worn out pipes to copper but leave the rest as galvanized steel. The problem is that if two different types of metal pipes aren’t properly connected they can start to corrode — what’s known as galvanized corrosion — which can lead to a leak. So what do you do? Call a pro to make that connection properly.

When the average home can lose 7,500 to 75,000 litres of water due to leaks it’s worth knowing if your money’s going down the drain. Call in a licensed plumber to test your water pressure and check your plumbing — it’s the first step to make it right!

Beauti-Tone

Uncovers the Undertones to Reveal 7 Great Neutrals Secrets to choosing neutrals that will always take your side When it comes to paint colour, a great

neutral is like a movie’s musical score — you don’t necessarily realize it’s there, but it heightens the experience of whatever it is you are seeing. Home Hardware Stores Limited, through its Beauti-Tone Paint Division, is paying tribute to the power of neutrals with 14 beautiful shades that will make your décor sing.

“A

great neutral is your BFF for home décor,” says Bev Bell, Creative Director, Beauti-Tone Paint and Home Products Division, Home Hardware Stores Limited. “They are incredibly versatile, inspiring looks that are luxe and sophisticated, or casual and cozy.” Selecting the correct neutral colour family is important. If the undertones are in conflict, the colours in the room will appear to clash, even if they are in the same colour group.

Undercover Undertones

Almost all colours, other than those that are pure, have an undertone. Olive green, for instance, is green with a yellow undertone. Neutrals, on the other hand, like to disguise their undertones. A taupe can go pink or purple, but you may not notice it until it’s on your walls. A grey can be warm, cool, blue, green, or red influenced. Browns that look similar on the surface can have yellow, red or green undertones. So, how can you make sure you end up choosing the right shade? Once you have selected the colour family you want, the secret to choosing the perfect neutral shade is to compare it, side-by-side to another neutral in the same colour family. This helps you to see the subtle undertones which you may not have noticed in a single colour swatch. For whites, the best way to bring out a near invisible undertone is to compare the paint chip to the whitest white. Why worry about undertones with whites? Rooms that are ‘white on white’ really work if the whites have similar undertones. You will be disappointed if you combine warm whites that have a hint of a yellow undertone, with cool whites that have a hint of blue, in the same space. > www.onthego.to 27

Choosing a Warm or Cool Undertone

“W

hen decorating a room that feels cold and uninviting, you would normally balance it by using colours from the warm side of the spectrum. But what if you love cool colours because they make you feel relaxed? Choose a green with yellow undertones or a blue with red undertones and your cool hues have warming characteristics. On the flip side, cool down hot colours by adding cool undertones. Just don’t try this with orange. That’s the one colour that will always fight back with its warm and outgoing personality,” Bell notes. Of course, the very best way to know a neutral’s undertone is to have someone figure it out for you! Here are 7 beautiful Beauti-Tone neutrals for your home, including their undertones — music to your ears:

Whites

White Smile SC080, from the Simon Chang Colour Collection This is a white that brings out your home’s best features. It works for Simon Chang, famous Canadian fashion designer, who partnered with Home Hardware to create a paint collection celebrating Canada. Undertone: this colour does have a touch of warm comfort value thanks to a whisper of yellow. white smile

thunder grey

Flannel CD026 This very cool shade is a mid-tone grey. Undertone: blue.

Taupes Natural Beauti SC081 This tried and true taupe is perfectly balanced between grey and brown. This is a Beauti-Tone all-star — in the top ten colours most chosen. Undertone: this is a pure colour. natural beauti

Tennis Whites FD018 A warm white, perfect where sunshine washes the space. This is an excellent choice for trim and ceiling when using colours from the warm side of the spectrum. Undertone: yellow

Greys

Thunder Grey SC072 This stately, saturated true grey commands respect. A great shade for people who love grey but don’t like the cool feeling often associated with the colour. Undertone: warm, leaning toward red. 28 www.onthego.to

Browns Chocolate SD020 Rich, dark and decadent, without the calories. Undertone: made richer with black influences. Fieldstone HD045 Antidote for builder’s beige. A light, well balanced beige that you could live with forever. Undertone: green.

T

here are a lot of great things in life that are neutral. Water’s neutral. Switzerland has long been considered neutral and it is spectacularly beautiful. Now, we can add these 7 beautiful Beauti-Tone shades to that list. “We’ve done the homework in terms of undertones for these colours, but remember, most colour schemes work best when the undertone is carried throughout the space,” says Bell. Manufactured in Canada by Home Hardware, Beauti-Tone paints are available exclusively at Home Hardware, Home Building Centre and Home Hardware Building Centre locations across Canada. An MCAP Mortgage

helps first time homebuyers to dream big. Every year thousands of Canadians overcome the obstacles to homeownership. With a little help and intelligent guidance, the only limits are your imagination and your budget.

H

omeownership can seem like the impossible dream. But with the help of a licensed Mortgage Broker you can get a better deal. A Mortgage Broker can help you work through every stage in the home buying process, including:

Finding the right home Choosing the right home means choosing the right location. What are you looking for? Suburban or urban? Good schools? Neighbourhoods vary widely in terms of cost and character so it’s key to work with a good real estate agent.

Saving for the down payment Start saving now. The more you put down, the lower your monthly payment will be. But you may have other sources of savings to tap into. The Canadian Government lets you withdraw money from your RRSPs. Also check for insurance dividends, Canada Savings Bonds and extra income like gifts, income tax returns or work bonuses.

Making an offer on the home of your dreams First, determine the highest price you can go. Once you make your offer, the seller will accept your offer, reject it or make a counter-offer. Keep in mind it’s wise to think about making your offer conditional and subject to a successful home inspection. At this point you bring in your lawyer to do a title search on the land.

Getting pre-approved As a first-time homebuyer, you’ll likely need to borrow most of the cost. However, a Mortgage Broker can determine how much you can be approved for so the search will be simpler. They’ll get you approved at a rate that’s locked in for 90 days — sometimes 120 days — so you can start looking immediately.

Complete the sale If your offer is accepted then you contact an insurance rep to arrange fire insurance. Send a copy of the insurance to your lawyer, work out the closing costs and paperwork and pick up your keys!

The future of

tax returns in Canada

Embracing technology can lead to an easier return this tax season!

T

here was a time when we dreaded filing our tax returns, even though it often resulted in a cheque in the mail. In order to see that potential refund, we had to do the math and pray that we did it right, apply for all of the possible credits and deductions, and finally, staple the slips and find an envelope large enough to hold it all — quite an undertaking. If you're still filing this way, we're here to teach you how to file in style in 2013. According to a recent survey commissioned by Thomson Reuters, makers of UFile ONLINE and UFile for Windows, 20 per cent of Canadians plan to file their tax return 34 www.onthego.to

via mail — through boxed/online software and by hand — rather than electronically. Did you know that next year, filing your taxes with paper will not be an option? If you responded no, then you are not alone. In fact, 56 per cent of Canadians surveyed were not aware of the Canadian Revenue Agency's (CRA) steps to eliminate paper packages in 2014. This action by the CRA was initiated to move Canadians towards electronic filing, which, in the long run, will save Canadians money, reducing costs associated with handling and storage of tax forms. NETFILE, one of the Canadian Revenue Agency's (CRA) electronic

filing options, has been available for more than 10 years and every year a growing number of Canadians have taken advantage of filing their tax returns electronically. In 2011, more than five million Canadian tax returns were filed using NETFILE. All you need to use NETFILE is quality software, like UFile, which is available to use online or can be installed on your computer. Once you use NETFILE to file your tax return, you will never have to endure the taste of envelope glue ever again — at least, not at tax time. Even better, NETFILE users benefit from faster refunds. Using a certified software program alongside NETFILE provides greater accuracy and ensures that you spend less time focusing on the math. UFile, the Canadian name in tax software, comes with a Triple Guarantee of accuracy, satisfaction and the best tax result. Boywood Border Collies the art of breeding energetic workaholics by Jen Mitchell Oddi & Laura Ducharme

We had the pleasure of filming herding dogs at Boywood Border Collies, a picturesque farm in Claremont, Ontario. Mary Lou Campbell and Kathy Keats co-own this immaculate slice of heaven. In addition to breeding Border Collies and Maremma livestock guardian dogs, these amazing women provide herding, agility and obedience lessons.

W

hen it comes to working dogs, the Border Collie is most definitely a workaholic. At Boywood, the sheep are herded by the dogs, and protected from predators by the Maremmas (a burly white breed of Italian sheepdog). We were amazed when Mary Lou told us that not so long ago, she was first time dog owner who ended up getting a Border Collie. For all you Border Collie owners out there, you know how much energy

they have. They are INTENSE. Upon realizing that her dog needed a “job”, Mary Lou signed up for herding classes. She was instantly hooked. Shortly thereafter, she came home with a few sheep, if you can believe that. The flock quickly expanded. Now, at Boywood, the sheep live happily ever after on the rolling 40 acres used only for herding and grazing. While we were there, we were treated to an unreal herding demonstration by Mary Lou, who

can command her Border Collies by words or whistle. We watched as the large flock of sheep were herded by a small dog. Later, Laura and her dog Phoenix got a lesson in agility from Kathy, who had Phoenix jumping hurdles in short order. We rounded out our visit with Laura cooking up a proper Round Up Dinner for Mary Lou, Kathy and their many Border Collies. It was a huge hit! Juicy flank steak accompanied by a mouth watering lentil stew. It’s amazing to see a dog herd an entire bunch of sheep — watch the episode online for free on www.thepetnetwork.tv/fido-wine.

HOW TO

SPRING INTO FITNESS by Michelle Betts

Now that winter if officially behind us, you can no longer use the excuse like it’s too cold outside or you have to many parties to attend, that are keeping you from getting healthy. Spring is the perfect time of year to get motivated to get in shape or stay working toward your fitness goals. With my help, and these three tips you will not be lacking in motivation, so this spring you can look and feel your best. TIP #1 As soon as you open your eyes, put on your gym clothes and shoes. Eat something light and healthy, and get moving. Statistics have shown that if you are in your exercise attire that you will most likely exercise. Even if you only have twenty minutes to go for a quick run, jog, or walk, do something soon after you wake. If you prefer to work out in the evening or at night, I suggest you put your gym clothes on before you leave work; this will also ensure exercise. TIP #2 This, to me, is so simple and easy: listen to upbeat music that makes you want to move. When you hear music that makes you happy or gives you energy, you in turn, want to move your body. There’s been many times where I really want to skip out on a workout, and then I listen to some fast paced music and I always seem to make it to the gym. Try this once and you will be hooked. 38 www.onthego.to

TIP #3 Do something you love that you want to get good at. Find a sport, exercise or dance class that you enjoy doing that motivates and pushes you. I don’t have to try to go to the gym, it’s what I like to do, so I always seem to get there … but if you signed me up for a baseball team, I would probably sleep through practice. I like watching baseball, not playing it. This is just an example, there are so many different classes, sports, and ways to exercise, find one that you truly enjoy. Also, if it costs money, pay in advance, this will also keep you from skipping out.

xoxo Michelle For more tips follow me on twitter: @michellebetts

I hope everyone has a happy and healthy spring. Follow these three tips to help you stay motivated so you can look and feel your best and reach your fitness goals. Have a fabulous March!

The

Wellness Belt

How An Incredible Canadian Invention Came to Be Doctors Craig and Elda Curphey practiced together in Canada and noticed a very high percentage of their patients had degrading physical conditions due to insufficient activity levels. In most cases, they recommended an increase in weight-bearing exercise as part of a rehabilitative approach.

H

owever, only about 1 in 10 patients would actually join a fitness facility or start an exercise program. Why? They gave 3 main reasons: No time. Negative attitude towards exercise. Too Expensive. There were also an alarming number of women visiting their office over the age of 30 who were on osteoporosis medications such as hormone replacement therapy, or bisphosphonate drugs such as Actonel or Fosamax. Most were uninformed about the lower effectiveness and the highly worrisome side effects of these medications. Again, the Curpheys encouraged the women to perform weight-bearing exercise as a much more effective and safer alternative, but the same reasons were given for non-performance.

They wanted the convenience of pills, so even with the awareness of very dangerous side effects they chose to believe, “It can’t happen to me.” Women have stroked and passed away while on these meds, so it does happen and it deeply affects the families involved. Studies conducted by Dr. Christine Snow at the University of Oregon conclude that weightbearing exercise significantly increases an individual’s ability to prevent hip fractures and strengthen their bones preventing and even reversing osteoporosis. It also suggested that “wearing” external weight, such as a weighted vest, during the performance of normal everyday activities produces the same benefits as working out at the gym. There are major drawbacks with weighted vests, however, that make them undesirable for use every day. People would only consider

wearing an external weighted device if it was convenient and attractive so the idea of a vest was transformed into a weighted belt instead. During prototyping, patients reported loss of inches, increased energy and endurance, and those who had bone density scans done reported only increases. The most astonishing feedback however, was from chronic back pain patients reporting that their spine problems had simply gone away! Sounds too good to be true? Don’t be surprised — these results are simply what happens when you correct your posture and increase your activity. Wear the Wellness Belt and begin enjoying all the benefits personally. That little change will not only change your life, it can SAVE your life!

Every year, Grain Farmers of Ontario hosts an annual conference for grain farmers in the spring to showcase achievements over the past year and look forward to years ahead. The March Classic is the largest grain-focused conference in Eastern Canada drawing over 500 attendees from farms across Ontario. The 2013 conference theme is Ontario’s Grain Industry: Generations of Success with world-class speakers discussing issues of politics, grain markets, and farm succession planning. The conference will highlight real issues farmers face at different life and business stages, through various speakers and events that will take place during this one day event. Planning the future succession of a farm operation is a key component to a successful business plan because there can be many parties involved in the daily operation of a grain farm and there needs to be a plan in place for the long term. Over 98% of farms in Canada are owned and operated by families and succession planning helps keep the big picture and the long-term direction of the farm family business in mind. Having the discussion on what happens to the family farm once the primary operator is no longer farming can be a tough conversation to have, but is vital to the long term success of the farm operation. This is why Grain Farmers of Ontario has included farm succession planning expert Elaine Froese to speak at the March Classic this year and provide her expert advice on having those tough talks with family on the issues of business, planning for the future and how to act on those plans. The success of Ontario grain farms for the future is a conversation that each individual farm family needs to have and the more thought and planning that goes into succession, the smoother the process can be. However, the March Classic does not just cover the tough topics of farming, it is also a time to celebrate successes and for grain farmers across the province to come together once a year and reconnect and network. There will be an exhibit hall with over 50 vendors from virtually all business sectors of the grain industry including finance, seed, fertilizer, crop protection, business management, marketing, and equipment. It is a chance for the whole industry to gather in one place and prepare for the new planting season ahead.

Slow Cooker Scalloped Potatoes with Ham Yield: serves 8 • Cooking Time: 4 hours (in slow cooker) • Preparation Time: 20 minutes

ingredients

directions

¾ lb (350 g) Ontario cooked ham, diced (about 1½ cups) 1 cup (250 mL) Cheddar cheese, shredded ½ cup (125 mL) onion, chopped 10 fl oz (284 mL) can of condensed cream of mushroom soup ½ cup (125 mL) water ½ tsp (2 mL) garlic powder ¼ tsp (1 mL) black pepper 3 lbs (1.5 kg) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 8)

In a medium bowl, mix together all ingredients except the potatoes, stir until smooth. Gently add in sliced potatoes and stir lightly to coat. Place in a slow cooker; cover and cook on HIGH for 4 hours (or 8 hours on LOW). Serve as a side dish or add a side salad for a delicious main meal.

Ham How-To

There are several different types of fully-cooked hams to choose from: Bone-In or Boneless — Most people feel that hams with the bone still in are more flavourful. However, hams with the bone removed are easier to carve. Spiral-Sliced — These are usually bone-in hams that have been pre-sliced into a continuous shape for convenient serving. The difficulties of carving a bone-in ham are solved, however the slices may tend to dry out because they are pre-cut. Dinner Hams — Dinner hams are made of meat that is chopped and packed in a “football” shape. These usually have added water and so are less expensive than whole hams. Flavoured — Some hams will come with additional flavouring such as maple or Black Forest.

cooking instructions

• Fully-cooked hams are best if heated through and served with a glaze. Pre-heat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and cook, uncovered, until an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C) is reached (use a meat thermometer to check that ham has reached correct temperature). A fully-cooked whole ham will take about 15 to 18 minutes per pound (500 g), while a fully-cooked half-ham will need about 18 to 24 minutes per pound (500 g). • Fresh (uncooked) ham or pork leg needs to be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) just like a pork roast. Never baste ham with its drippings during cooking or it will be too salty. Instead, prepare a glaze and apply it during the final 30 minutes of cooking. • Portioning: Preparing for a special occasion? Consider your portions — each pound (500 g) of boneless ham will serve 2–3 people, while each pound (500 g) of bone-in ham will serve 1–2 people.

The Birdman.

PINOT GRIGIO Word has it he watches over the vineyards and calls the shots. No wonder this Pinot Grigio sings with a harmonious blend of floral, peach and pear aromas and finishes with a long, fruity warble. Pairs with grilled seafood or Asian cuisine.

Big House Red.

CALIFORNIA RED WINE Fruit Bomb! Promises of parole led to a clean palate and flavours of red fruits, rhubarb and spice, with a finish of subtle vanilla flavours and, ahem, a touch of smoke. Pair with barbecued ribs, grilled meats and veggies or lasagna Bolognese.

Big House White.

CALIFORNIA WHITE WINE The wine starts with a heavy dose of “nose candy”: melons, pears and lychee all surround your senses. The palate opens up to summer peach, dried apricot and tropical fruits. Pair with fresh fish, spicy fair or fruit salads.
