The National Job Fair & Training Expo Wed. April 3rd – Thurs. April 4th, 2013 Metro Toronto Convention Centre will host more than 500 recruiters, career specialists and admission officers while they offer jobs or help find a job though hiring companies, employment and career services, and career training and education programs. The Year of Great Expectations by darren c. jacob

It’s been 20 years since the Toronto Blue Jays last held the esteemed Commissioner’s Trophy and were crowned World Series Champions. It’s been 20 years since the city has celebrated any major championship sports team; but thanks to the Toronto Blue Jays, our city is getting closer to reaching that ultimate goal.

here is a buzz throughout the city — and I’m sure around the rest of the league — about our beloved Jays. This could possibly be the year they bring back the title as the best team in baseball. I know at the beginning of every season there is a wishful excitement that “this is the year” — yet every year we are disappointed. But this season is truly different for many reasons. This year our GM Alex Anthopoulos has made some big moves and brought in some highly talented players. The word on the baseball field is that the Jays are going to be team to beat this season. With a well-rounded bullpen, a top-notch in-filed and outfield, and a strong force behind the bat this is going to be a great year of baseball. Now we get to sit back with a hot dog and some peanuts and a few cold ones and watch it all unfold! 12 www.onthego.to

The season opener kicks off April 2nd, 2013, versus the Cleveland Indians (as of day of print, the game has yet to be decided); then the Jays battle against the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and the New York Yankees. The month of April is going to be a good test for this team that has high expectations to do well. Ticket prices to check out a Jays game are so reasonably priced compared to other sporting teams in this city: they range from $11 to $210 (the latter put you right into the action). Now tell me who doesn’t love watching a live baseball game? And for those prices there is no excuse why we can’t fill up the Rogers Centre and cheer for our beloved Toronto Blue Jays. There are many new faces on the team: R.A. Dickey, Jose Reyes, Emilio Bonifacio, Josh Johnson, Maicer Izturis, Mark DeRosa, Melky Cabrera and Mark Buehrle to name a few. Also back for a second-round as team manager is John Gibbons. Here’s good omen, as I see it — it’s the Dominican contingent the Jays have on the team. Seeing as the Dominican Republic were crowned champions in this years’ World Baseball Classic, hopefully that winning attitude can carry over to the MLB season. Here are some dudes to keep an eye on this season — key players that will help bring Jays to that next level:

Jose Bautista #19 Right Field Jose has been in the Majors since 2004 and has been a Toronto Blue Jay since 2009, and has been a perrenial favourite since leading the major leagues in home runs in 2010 and 2011. He’s achieved countless awards and honours as a Blue Jay including the All-Stars, Silver Slugger, Hank Aaron award, and numerous times has been the player of the month and player of the week. In 2011, Batista led the Majors in home runs, walks, slugging percentage and OPS. He became the first player to lead the Majors in those categories since Barry Bonds in 2001 and the first American League player since Ted Williams in 1942. Also in 2011, he became the 10th Blue Jay to be voted to start the AllStar Game with a Major League record of 7,454,753 votes. R.A. Dickey #43 Pitcher Robert Allen Dickey is the 2012 Cy Young Award winner. He is the first knuckleballer to win this award. Last year playing with the Mets, he set career bests in wins, innings pitched, ERA, complete games and shutouts. It was also the first time in his career he was named to the National League All-Star Team. Dickey tied for second for most wins in the Majors with 20. He struck out 230 in 233.2 inning, which ranked 3rd in the Majors and 1st in the National League.

Jose Reyes #7 Short Stop Jose Reyes is going to be an exciting player to watch. His is a very skillful short stop and a powerhouse with the bat. In 2011, Reyes became the 11th different short stop to win the batting crown. He is the first player since 1900 to post 3 multi-triple games in one season and became the second short stop to collect 100 hits in 66 games or fewer. Jose founded the Santiago RBI program, which is designed to help youngsters learn the fundamentals of baseball while receiving an education. He also donates to help rebuild fields in his hometown. Want My Help?

Here’s how to get it. Whoever said, “Time flies when you’re having fun” was right. I can’t believe it’s been ten years since Holmes on Homes first aired!

ver the last ten years, I must have received hundreds of thousands of letters and emails. Maybe millions. And each one of those letters was from someone who needed help. That’s a lot of people and a lot of problems for just one guy. So how do I choose which jobs to take on? That’s probably one of the most popular questions I get asked. Answering it isn’t always easy. First, plenty of things go into choosing, and it’s always a moving target. But it usually

comes down to three things: The job, the story and the people. So far I’ve developed three series: Holmes on Homes, Holmes Inspection and Holmes Makes it Right. Holmes on Homes focused on homeowners who had been screwed over by a contractor. Holmes Inspection was about helping people who had been screwed over by a home inspector. But now with Holmes Makes it Right, there are no limits to the jobs. And the more different and unusual, the better. When you have a successful television show there’ s always the fear of repetition. If one week an episode airs where I’m redoing a kitchen for victims of a scam, I’m getting hundreds of emails about kitchen scams the next week after everyone’s seen it. But once I’ve done one type of job I need something different. Give me a job that’s unique, in some way, from other things I’ve done. Give me a story. www.onthego.to 17

I’m open to all kinds of projects. Big, small, homes, cottages, playgrounds, barns — doesn’t matter. I want to do it all. But more important than the job is the story behind the job. Ideally, we want big stories, not so big projects. Rip offs and scams are the meat and potatoes — people love stories with villains. But Brian, our story producer, reviews every letter and sees the bigger picture. He operates on gut instincts. He’s also the show’s biggest fan. So if he thinks a story has potential — no matter what anyone else says — I’m sniffing it out. If the job fits the schedule we meet the people involved. Remember, this is television. That means my story producer is looking for people who can tell a story. Let me give you an example. The first episode of Holmes Makes it Right was a seriously bad roof job. But we didn’t choose the story because of that. We chose it because when I met the homeowners it was magic. They were funny, interesting, cute as hell, and the circumstances around their roof was never seen before on

TV. Most of all, they absolutely needed my help in a big way. Bottom line: It’s about ‘needs’ versus ‘wants’. There are many people who ‘want’ my help and then there are people who really ‘need’ it — people that have no other options. They’ve got nowhere else to turn. Tell me what the stakes are. What will happen if you don’t get my help? Like I said, I am just one guy. I can only help so many people. But your story could have what it takes to be a Holmes Makes it Right episode. Five Tips for Transforming Yard Sale Finds by Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault

Spring has officially sprung, and for many it means the anticipation of warmer weather, greener grass, bluer skies … and yard sales! I’ve always loved bargain hunting for the thrill of a fab frugal find, and this time of year is perfect to shop local yard sales in the hopes of unearthing a unique, affordable décor treasure. Whether it’s a piece that needs a minor tune-up or a complete DIY overhaul, here are my top five tips for transforming your yard sale finds.

Break all of the “rules” and think outside the box. First things first, I don’t believe that there are any rules in decorating! In a sea of beige, predictable design, it’s the spaces that dare to be different which end up being the most memorable. So when it comes to refreshing a yard sale find, think about alternative functions beyond its original intended use. A vintage T.V. console can easily become an entertaining bar station, or a dated dresser might be reimagined into a bathroom vanity. The key with adding personality is to think outside of the box.

Get inspired. Have you ever stumbled upon a pre-loved piece just oozing with potential? Maybe it was such a great bargain that you had no choice but to snap it up. If an upcycle makeover is suddenly on the horizon, why not look for a little design inspiration first. My go-to source… PINTEREST! I have found and collected countless images on the widely popular site of trendy, high end furnishing that become great

inspiration for my own affordable and inspired DIY transformations.

Personalize to suit your décor and taste. Whether your yard sale find is a thrifty end table or an aged armoire, the likelihood of it perfectly coordinating with your existing finishes and wood tones is probably quite low. I often say, when in doubt, paint it! The easiest way to unify several different pieces of furniture is to paint them all a consistent colour. Although the styles of your furnishings may be different, a fresh coat of paint in a hue of your choice will not only help to harmonize your décor, but also reinforce your design sensibility and taste.

Prep, prep, prep. As much as I love a great bargoon, I will never sacrifice quality or style to save a few dollars. When I’m searching for a piece with upcycle potential, I always ensure that it is well constructed and that it doesn’t have any major structural flaws. However, the chance of a piece needing some minor

repairs is usually inevitable, and if you plan to add a splash of paint, proper preparation is key. Wood glue, crack filler, thorough sanding and a coat of primer will help to ensure that the end result lasts as long as your love for your new piece.

Know when to call in the pros. I have a motto … know your limit, and DIY within it! Not every upcycle project can be completed simply with an inspired idea and a little elbow grease. If the task of sanding, painting, or reupholstering is outside of your comfort zone, consider taking your yard sale find to a professional to help bring your furniture makeover to life. Sometimes it’s worth a few extra dollars for a quality finish if it means saving a bucket of sweat and aggravation.

reduce fuel use, save money, and keep our roads safer Like millions of Canadians who drive vehicles every day, you can take steps to reduce fuel use, save money, curb carbon dioxide emissions, and improve safety on our roads.

onsider adopting the following six fuel saving behaviours: Accelerate gently: The harder you accelerate, the more fuel you consume. In city driving, where accelerating consumes about half of the fuel used, you can conserve as much as 15 per cent by easing the pedal gently and gradually. Maintain a steady speed: By avoiding unnecessary acceleration you will not only consume less fuel, it will also help to enhance traffic flow, minimize exhaust emissions and deliver safer driving conditions. Consider using cruise control on the highway. Anticipate traffic: Avoid unnecessary fuel consumption by reading the road ahead and anticipating situations before they arise. This basic defensive-driving technique negates the need for sudden stops and calls on you to maintain your vehicle’s momentum. The first rule is to leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you and plan your manoeuvres well in advance. Coast to decelerate: By predicting slowdowns and removing your foot from the accelerator as early as possible, you can decrease your speed, conserve fuel and save money, 28 www.onthego.to

Keep track of your documents Make sure that you can find all your tax papers and slips when you need them. Use a large envelope or shoe box to organize all your receipts, and keep the receipts sorted in categories using paperclips. Start with the letter that you received from the Canada Revenue Agency and add any other document that may be tax related. Do you remember where you were on February 4, 2013 when the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) stopped issuing pennies? Perhaps you walked by one on the sidewalk but didn’t bother to pick it up — to your peril. There goes your chance of having a lucky day, as the old adage goes. Oh well, it doesn’t really matter now does it?

esearch by Desjardins Group’s economists found that maintaining the penny costs Canadians an estimated $150M a year. Thanks in part to this analysis, the federal government announced last year that it would withdraw the one-cent coin. Don’t worry though; this definitely wasn’t a case of being penny wise and pound foolish. Frankly, the penny lost its shine ages ago: it costs 1.6¢ each to produce and its purchasing power has been greatly reduced partly because Canadians have been hoarding them for years. By eliminating the coin, there will be a significant savings to the environment and the economy in general due to the reduction in handling costs for retailers, financial institutions and consumers. As a result, the transition costs for the government to gradually 32 www.onthego.to

withdraw the penny — which may be in the tens of millions of dollars over the next few years — will be minimal compared to the recurring annual savings Canadians will see down the line. Gone but not forgotten Although the RCM is no longer minting the penny, it will maintain its value and legal tender indefinitely. And some businesses will still accept it as a form of payment. As pennies are withdrawn from circulation, prices will be rounded to the nearest nickel for cash transactions. Non-cash transactions (debit card, credit card, prepaid card, cheque, etc.) will continue to be settled to the nearest cent. Don’t cry for the penny, it had a good run What will the RCM do with all the lowly pennies that are

returned? They will be melted down and recycled, which will create a revenue source for the government to help offset the transition costs. Great use for your old copper If you’re the proud owner of a terrarium full of pennies and would rather not roll and return the lot to your local financial institution, consider donating them to a local charity. When asked what’s the most important component to excellent health and fitness my answer would be getting adequate amounts of sleep every night. You can say I’m spoiled — I regularly sleep eight hours on any given night. However, the last few weeks there have been problems where I live and it has interrupted my sleep, which is why I felt compelled to write on this topic. Keep reading on to see why sleep is so important for your health, fitness, and general well-being.

In most cases, they recommended an increase in weight-bearing exercise as part of a rehabilitative approach.

owever, only about 1 in 10 patients would actually join a fitness facility or start an exercise program. Why? They gave 3 main reasons: No time. Negative attitude towards exercise. Too expensive. There were also an alarming number of women visiting their office over the age of 30 who were on osteoporosis medications such as hormone replacement therapy, or bisphosphonate drugs such as Actonel or Fosamax. Most were uninformed about the lower effectiveness and the highly worrisome side effects of these medications. Again, the Curpheys encouraged the women to perform weight-bearing exercise as a much more effective and safer alternative, but the same reasons were given for non-performance.

They wanted the convenience of pills, so even with the awareness of very dangerous side effects they chose to believe, “It can’t happen to me.” Women have had strokes and passed away while on these meds, so it does happen and it deeply affects the families involved. Studies conducted by Dr. Christine Snow at the University of Oregon conclude that weightbearing exercise significantly increases an individual’s ability to prevent hip fractures and strengthen their bones preventing and even reversing osteoporosis. These scones are perfect with tea or for breakfast. We served ours with butter, local honey and jam.

1 cup blueberries 2 tsp flour 1 tsp cinnamon 1¾ cups Kamut flour 1 Tbsp baking powder ½ cup cold butter ⅓ cup honey 2 eggs ½ cup milk

Preheat oven to 425° Stir together 2 tsp flour and 1 tsp cinnamon, lightly toss with blueberries. Set aside. In a large bowl sift together flour and baking powder. With a pastry cutter, cut in butter until the size of small peas. In a measuring cup beat 2 eggs. Add enough milk to make ⅔ cup. Add honey

to liquid mixture. Lightly stir egg mixture and berries into the flour. Handle dough as little as possible. Divide dough into 2 parts, place on an oiled cookie sheet, and pat into 6” circles. Cut into 6 wedges, brush with milk and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake 15-20 minutes.

Jarlsberg french onion soup ingredients 4 slices toast 4 slices Jarlsberg 8 medium white and/or yellow onions, chopped 8 cups chicken stock 4 Tbsp butter 2 Tbsp thyme, chopped Salt and pepper

Season the chicken breast with salt and pepper and add Jarlsberg and rocket salad. Wrap the bacon around the chicken breast, Jarlsberg and rocket salad and secure it with two-three wooden kebab sticks. Grill the chicken for approx. 4 minutes on each side. Leave it to rest for a couple of minutes before serving. Serves 4

There is no shortage of home-grown wine drinking in the boot-shaped country — Italians are ranked 5th in the world for wine consumption by volume with 41 litres per year per capita.
