entertainment around the gta by Darren C. Jacob

It looks as though the year is quickly coming to an end and I can personally say 2012 was a fabulous year. December usually turns out to be the busiest month of the year as we hustle around trying to get into the holiday spirit. Luckily there are numerous festive events occurring throughout the city to help you get into the spirit of things, or to assist in getting those last minute one-of-a-kind gifts for those hard-to-buy-for loved ones. Not to worry though, if you need a break from reindeer and jolly old fat men, there are plenty of other events happening to accommodate. Lowes Toronto Christmas Market Friday Nov 30, 2012 – Sunday Dec 16, 2012 Do you want to embrace the spirit and tradition of Christmas? Well this is an event that does such a thing! Head over to the Distillery Historic District for this free event that captures the charm of a European Christmas market. Are you wondering what a Christmas Market consists of? Originating in Germany around the early 1400s the Christmas Market celebrates the sights and sounds of Christmas during the weeks leading up to the big day. The market will showcase some unique and local handcrafted products. The streets and squares of the Historic Distillery will 4 www.onthego.to

Christmas at Black Creek Sunday Nov 17, 2012 – Sunday Dec 23, 2012 Here’s another spectacular event that brings nothing but old fashioned Christmas fun. I can’t forget to mention the “other” big night in December — New Years Eve. For those with young ones it can be difficult to find somewhere to go. There are several events planned in Toronto, but if you’re willing to drive, there’s plenty outside the city as well. The big outdoor party in Toronto is hosted by Citytv at Nathan Phillips Square. There will be Citytv personalities, good times, and live music from artists Howie D, Karl Wolf, Aleesia and many more. This event will be televised throughout the country and is free to attend. The Toronto Zoo Annual New Years Eve Family Countdown can be fun for the young. This event features family entertainment, food, and of course, animal visitors. Doors for this event are at 4:30 and conclude with a countdown at 8pm.

Another note worthy New Years Eve destination is New Years Eve at Blue Mountain. Enjoy wonderful food, good times, and fireworks all with a scenic view from the mountain over Georgian Bay and Collingwood. Whether your New Years Eve means nightclubs, comedy shows, house parties with family and friends, or just a quiet evening at home, whatever you choose to do, have fun and be safe! On the Go wishes everyone a very Happy Holiday season!

Oh, what’s a girl to do on this

new year’s eve by Alana Anderson

I can only speak for myself, but once December rolls in all I can think about is Christmas and everything it entails. With that said, every year I overlook New Year’s Eve, and almost nearly forget about it all together. Year after year I find myself planning the night with only hours to spare, which usually leaves me alone at home with my dogs and a single glass of champagne.

S

ounds a little sad doesn’t it? Well it really is. Especially considering that I usually can’t stay awake even until the countdown. This year I want to get off the couch, out of my pajamas, and get out there to see what the night really has to offer. I have put tons of effort into trying to find the perfect place to say goodbye to 2012, and besides deciding on which event to attend, the hardest part has proven to be choosing which city to celebrate in. Luckily for me, I live close enough to a few of the biggest party cities in Canada. Toronto, Montréal and Niagara Falls boast some of the biggest and best New Year’s Eve celebrations around. Born and raised in Toronto, I already know how huge a night New Year’s Eve is here. Considering the size of the city, it is obvious that there will be hundreds of potential parties to go to. The real challenge is finding the right one. Every year at Nathan Phillips Square, Citytv hosts their annual New Year’s Eve Bash. Musical performers, special guest appearances, and television

personalities draw huge crowds early in the evening, accompanied by more festivities that carry on throughout the night. The absolute best part is that not only is this event a guaranteed night of fun for you and your friends, but it’s also totally free! If class is more your style, consider one of Toronto’s popular hotels; many host a formal gala or ball on New Year’s Eve. Though they can be pricey, many of these celebrations donate portions of their proceeds to charity. There are options when trying to plan around small children as well. The Toronto Zoo has a “family countdown” which kicks off at 8:00pm. This allows you to spend quality time with your family, as well as the opportunity to let loose later in the evening. If you are heading into Montréal this New Year’s, prepare for the night of your life! With some of the biggest parties and largest crowds, Montréal truly transforms into a city-wide party for you and your friends. Considering Montréal’s reduced drinking age, and 3:00am last call, people from all over pour

www.onthego.to 17

otg | events

themselves into this party town in search of a New Year’s they won’t forget. Huge venues are made into massive club events, with DJs, open bars, live shows and dancers. Though these events are a bit pricey, many parties offer “early bird specials”, which are actually quite a steal. If you are planning to attend one of these, make sure you book EARLY. These celebrations sell out fast, many fully booked before December even begins. As well, you can purchase package deals, which give you a ticket to an event, a dinner, and a night’s stay in one of Montréal’s hotels. Purchasing either of these packages could also make a great Christmas present for your best friend or partner! Niagara Falls is an amazing place to spend your time regardless of the time of year. With so much to do it really is hard to find yourself bored to tears, especially not over New Year’s Eve! In Niagara’s Queen Victoria Park, Global’s ET Canada hosts the biggest free New Year’s Eve concert. With appearances by Canada’s own Dragonette, Hedley and Nelly Furtado lined up for the

night’s roster, it’s sure to be an unforgettable night. With two different fireworks shows displayed right over the falls, it’s a great way to ring in the New Year. Considering that this is an alcohol-free event, it is also a fantastic opportunity for those with young families. As well as the highly anticipated New Year’s concert, Niagara Falls also hosts The Festival of Lights which illuminates the city and the falls and brings a little festive cheer to everyone around. I suggest you get a hotel room that overlooks the park and the falls, and watch from the comfort of your own room! New Year’s Eve isn’t just about celebrating another year passed; it’s also about celebrating your accomplishments this year. So let yourself go with the ones you love, dance to the music you want to dance to and party it up wherever you want to party! Whichever city or event you decide to go to, you’re guaranteed a night of fun!

1. How much area will I have to clear? 2. Who will be operating the snow thrower? 3. How much snow will I typically encounter?

Single-Stage or Two-Stage Snow Thrower. Which is Right for You?

Single-Stage snow throwers are ideal for removing up to 13” of snowfall. Lighter in weight and more maneuverable, single-stage models cut a 21” path to make quick work of snow removal from smaller driveways and sidewalk areas. Two-stage snow throwers, which are designed to break up heavy ice and snow, are suitable for more demanding jobs – including bigger driveways and hills. If you live in an area that regularly sees large amounts of snow, you’ll be best served by a powerful self-propelled two-stage model.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Women will also help to: • Reduce elevated blood lipid levels/hyperlipidemia • Prevent iron deficiency. • Metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

We are bringing you two new products with doublethe number of capsules and triplethe number of health claims for men and four timesthe number of health claims for women.

How long must I use Bio-Fen® Plus?

As in the previous formulation, the fenugreek seed extract in both new formulas reduces excess blood lipid levels (hyperlipidemia). Fenugreek contains β-sitosterol, an active plant sterol, which has been shown to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase activity – the enzyme responsible for converting excess testosterone to DHT (which is the primary molecule that causes hair loss). The SDG (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside) from flax lignans in both formulas also decreases excess cholesterol - the building block of testosterone. Based on new research on the rate of metabolism of SDG in flax lignans (8-12 hours on average), the dosage in both products has been revised from once a day to twice a day for optimum results.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Mencapsules are usually effective at stopping hair loss within the first two months. However, since healthy hair grows only about 1 cm each month, it may take up to three months before you notice that hair growth is increased or the rate of hair loss is decreased. Anyone experiencing new growth should see it within four months. In some people the original pigmentation may come back. Once you stop completely your hair growth pattern will slowly go back to the point where you started. However, some people may be able to go with a lower maintenance dose.

As before, the saw palmetto extract inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, and this action slows down the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) – the overabundance of which causes the miniaturization of hair follicles. This activity of the saw palmetto also helps to relieve the urinary symptoms of mild to moderate BPH for men. The saw palmetto that originally was an extract standardized to 45% free fatty acids, esters, and sterols while the new formula is a 4:1 extract to support the BPH claim. The product still contains these molecules for hair loss, but they are now at proprietary amounts based on our research so that the competition cannot duplicate our formula.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Men will also help to: • Relieve the urologic symptoms associated with mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia - BPH (e.g. weak urine flow, incomplete voiding, frequent daytime and night time urination).

• Reduce elevated blood lipid levels / hyperlipidemia.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Women: The women’s formula is almost the same as the men’s formula. The mechanisms and results for the women formula is the same. The only difference is it contains silicon and iron instead of saw palmetto. Silicon has been shown to contribute to hair shaft strength and thus healthy hair growth. It also contains iron which helps prevent iron deficiency. A number of studies have related sub-clinical iron deficiency in women to diffuse hair loss/alopecia. The increased amount of SDG and other revisions to the regulations allow us to make some additional health claims for Bio-Fen® Plus for Women.

What is the quality of Bio-Fen® Plus for Men? Bio-Fen® Plus for Men is manufactured in Canada according to quality assurance specifications called Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This ensures that the ingredients are tested for their level of quality, potency & purity, prior to production and the finished product prior to sale. Hair Grow Technology (Bio-Fen® Plus) is a progressive company - we continually seek out the latest research on bioactive ingredients, and on regulatory updates in the natural health products industry. picking the perfect

Christmas

Tree

by Alana Anderson nless you’ve been living under a rock you will notice that every time you step out of the house you are bombarded by advertisements reminding us that once again Christmas is on its way. Though it is such an important aspect of the holidays, many of us forget what it’s really like to pick out the perfect tree for your living room. This year I decided to switch from an artificial tree to a fresh tree and what I thought was going to be an easy task has proven to be quite the decision. Here are the best five options I found when looking for that perfect Christmas tree. Voted the most popular tree, the Fraser fir tree is in nearly 27% of homes each year during the Holiday season. This tree has rich, dark green needles that are about an inch in length; they do not shed them easily and also have a great, long lasting smell. The second most popular tree is the Douglas fir. It has a full body with a natural conical shape to it and its colours range from bluish to dark green. It also has excellent needle retention and a nice aroma and requires little to no maintenance after set up. Next is the Balsam fir. Its natural pyramid like shape and smaller size make it the most convenient when setting up in your home and it is also the most affordable type of Christmas tree on the market. This tree has a shorter life span than the Douglas fir or the Fraser fir meaning a little more cleanup, and less scent. The Colorado blue spruce falls fourth and boasts the same features as the trees mentioned earlier. It is a beautiful dark green, almost blue colour and has very full body. It retains its needles very well and has a long lifespan, however is not recommended if you have small children as the stiff needles can puncture skin. Lastly, the Scotch pine. It has stiff rigid branches which are great for ornaments and lights, as well as hardy green needles that hold for over four weeks with a long lasting aroma. Whichever tree you decide to use, you can be sure everyone will appreciate your effort. Pull out all the ornaments you’ve collected over the years and showcase them the right way; your way! Hopefully this year your Christmas shrine will be the best one yet!

Colour trends for the

new year

Sharon appears regularly as a décor expert on Citytv’s Cityline and is the Colour & Design Spokesperson for Benjamin Moore Paints in Canada.

by Sharon Grech Colour and design trends are constantly changing to keep pace with the way we think and feel about our lives and the world around us. As we get ready to embrace a new year, we naturally seek out newer, fresher items for both our wardrobe and our homes to inspire us. In home décor the trend transition is a little more gradual — after all it is a bigger commitment to change a sofa than it is to purchase a new scarf in your latest favourite hue! So what colours should you look for to help inject some novelty into your interior for the New Year, without changing everything? Well, grey is continuing to reign as the “it“ neutral in fashion and in the home. Contemporary greys are rooted, warm and sophisticated. With grey as the foundation, almost anything goes for accents and accessory colours, but pales and candied mid-tones with a retro feel seem to be leading the pack for 2013.

Here are my picks for the top home fashion colours to look for in the New Year: Lemon sorbet (2019-60) > This luscious pale lemon hue is Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year! Combine it with grey or tan or for the more fashion forward, pair it with other trending pastels to create an invigorating space that is youthful, fashionable and vibrant! Dusty mauve (2174-40) > Cosmetic coral tones vary from rich and deep to pale “barely there” tints and bring a feminine, fashionforward aura to any space. Stratton blue (HC-142) > Blue has been trending in home décor for some time now but with a few drops of yellow, this bluegreen hue has a warmer disposition that feels soft and fluid — a blue to wash away “the blues!” Polo blue (2062-10) > This graphic, inky blue is a contemporary alternative to black, bringing sophistication and contrast to urban décor Sea haze (2137-50) > Grey has been prevalent for many seasons, and is showing little sign of retreat — sea haze has a misty-green undertone that makes a perfect backdrop to any of the year’s more colourful choices.

If you are looking for some simple and inexpensive ways to embrace some of the hot colours for 2013 try painting an accent wall, or a ceiling or a piece of outdated furniture. It’s easy to then create a designer look by finishing with small accessories, accent cushions and throws in the same colour for repetition and harmony.

Why Are Your Windows Leaking?

By Mike Holmes

When the temperature starts to drop, many people start finding their windows are fogged up or covered in condensation — sometimes it’s so bad water pools on the windowsill or floor. Is it a big deal? Yes, it can be.

M

ould is one reason. Moisture is another. Moisture can cause structural damage, like rot and rust. It can also damage surface finishes. Where does all the moisture come from? It can get in through your roof — if you have a leak — or through your basement’s concrete walls and floor. Remember, concrete is porous. Water can move through it from the soil outside. But most of the moisture in your house comes from you — from your shower, your cooking, your washing

machine, your dishwasher, even your breath. When people find they’ve got sweaty windows, the first thing they do is spend a lot of money putting in new windows. That might make sense, but I’ve seen these problems with new windows too.

www.onthego.to 39

otg | home

Condensation happens when the warm air inside your house hits a cold surface — like the glass in a single pane window. Newer windows are double glazed, and usually have an inert gas — like argon or krypton — in between their panes. This provides some insulation and reduces the chance of condensation. Between the two panes of glass there should be an airtight seal. But if the seal is cracked, you’ll get condensation in between the two layers of glass. A cracked seal probably means you need to replace your windows. Air leakage can also cause condensation. How do you get air leakage around your windows? They probably weren’t properly installed and/or insulated. Adding some insulation is a lot cheaper than replacing your windows, so try that first. There are other possible causes for condensation on the inside of your windows: 1. If you have a new home that was built within the last 2 years it’s possible that your wood framing is full of moisture. Have you ever seen a new development being built where they cover the

piles of framing with tarps to keep the rain and snow off? No, I didn’t think so! That wood soaks up moisture, and continues to let that excess moisture out until it’s dry. That happens within your walls. 2. Your home might be too airtight. Poor air movement in your home will cause condensation. So, open a window just a crack downstairs and install stronger, better quality exhaust fans. They’ll exhaust moist air from inside your home and replace it with dry, fresh air from outside.

This will help you create some air movement. You may also want to look into a Heat Recovery System (HRV). 3. It’s possible that you have a problem with your HVAC (Heating, Venting and Air Conditioning). For that you should contact a qualified Heating Contractor. If you control the moisture in your house, and make sure your windows are properly installed and insulated, you can put an end to your wet windows.

Building Hope is the Key to Community Lately the media has been reporting on how the housing market is slowing down, leading to lower prices. But with the current mortgage rules, being able to afford a home is still out of the reach of many Canadian families who struggle every day to make ends meet. The stress of constantly worrying about money is particularly difficult at a time of year when consumerism is blaring at us from every corner.

T

here are many charitable organizations that focus on families, and several that get a boost from corporate participation. Organizations like MCAP, for example, work with Habitat for Humanity® Canada, a perfect fit for a company that believes every family should be able to realize the dream of home ownership. While MCAP has supported Habitat for Humanity Canada since the 1990s, in 2010 they went one step further and launched their Key to Hope™ program. MCAP’s Key to Hope program provides funding to Habitat for Humanity to build affordable housing for families in need. The program also provides needed mortgage servicing. MCAP borrowers also have the opportunity to donate to Habitat for Humanity each time they make a regular mortgage payment. By supporting Habitat for Humanity, MCAP is also supporting communities. Homeowners take pride in caring for their properties and the volunteers who participate in Habitat for Humanity builds feel 42 www.onthego.to

connected to the projects they contribute to. MCAP itself benefits too, with improved team spirit from employees who donate their time volunteering to build homes across the country. Families are transformed from defeat to dignity, gaining the stability to dream, plan and grow. Children enjoy better self-esteem, become better students and generally are in better health thanks to having a secure place to call home. The overall result is a better future for everyone. Families who qualify for the program get involved too, providing 500 hours to help build their new home. No down payment is required and the no-interest mortgage payments are based on 25% to 30% of the family’s monthly income. It’s not just about building homes, it’s about building communities. Did you know? • Habitat for Humanity uses volunteer labour and donated materials for every build. • While partner families do not need a monetary down payment, they are required to contribute “sweat equity” by giving 500 volunteer hours to help build their home. • Habitat for Humanity does not give out free houses. Families buy the house but receive a no-interest mortgage with affordable and sustainable payments based on 25% to 30% of their monthly household income.

Paint Away Seasonal Blues Banish the winter “blahs” at minimal cost Studies show that the weather outside can directly affect our spirits on the inside, and with recurring grey forecasts, many of us struggle to stay upbeat this time of year. Fortunately, there is a way to beat the seasonal “blahs,” say the experts at leading Canadian paint brand CIL: Surround yourself with uplifting colours. For less than $50 for an average-sized room, you can bring a space to life with ‘pick-me-up’ shades of paint such as reds, oranges, yellows and pinks,” says Alison Goldman, Brand Manager for CIL® paint. Beat the winter blues with colour “While each person’s experience with colour is unique, studies show that in general, certain colours affect people in specific ways,” Goldman explains. “The colour green, for example, is popular in home décor because it evokes a sense of serenity.Yellow, red and orange also work well because they are cheerful colours that can inspire feelings of t well-being and higher energy.” To choose a colour that has a ‘feel-good’ effect that works for you, Goldman suggests considering what colours you tend to gravitate toward in your home and even in your wardrobe. Then think about your emotional needs. If you have a hectic life then calming, serene colours might be a good choice. If you feel down, fill your home with cheerful, energetic colours like yellow, pink and orange.

Magnificence 90RR 21/418 Pink Carnival 21RR 36/354

A Change is as good as a rest “The very act of making the decision to change your décor, and then completing a project, can evoke feelings of well being,” Goldman explains. “A fresh coat of paint in a shade you love can do wonders for both the home and psyche.” Talk it out with an expert If you’re having trouble choosing a colour, CIL has an array of online tools to help you pick and visualize. And if you’re really stuck, you can visit CIL’s blog (talk.cil.ca) or Facebook page facebook.com/CILPaints) and “ask an expert”. You’ll get solutions to your colour dilemmas from a CIL colour specialist.

deck the driveway…

with a new set of wheels Ah December; the holidays are here and a new year looms. There’s a spirited hustle and bustle unmatched by any other season….but then comes the rest of the interminably long, dark, soul-sapping winter. Snow storms, hazardous driving, lack of daylight, Vitamin D deficiency: the excitement that led up to the holidays is replaced by a longing for spring….a spring that is seemingly an eternity away. And February, well it may be the shortest month, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. Oh, what to do, what to do.

F

or some, a little shopping puts a smile on those pale sunshine deprived faces. And many savvy shoppers have learned the next three months is not a bad time to buy a car. Because December’s hectic buzz is followed by a period of semi-hibernation, fewer shoppers brave the elements to visit showrooms … and dealers appreciate these hearty souls’ efforts … many a great deal can be had when buying in December, January and February. If you are in the market for a vehicle, not only is this timing good, if you choose to buy from a dealer, you have more protections today than ever before. Many consumers don’t realize that retail motor vehicle sales is a regulated industry. This means all dealers and salespeople must, by law, be registered with OMVIC, the regulator of sales in the province. In order to become licensed each dealer and salesperson undergoes stringent background checks and must pass a course in automotive law and ethics. Further, dealers must abide by

48 www.onthego.to

Ontario’s consumer protection laws including the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act (MVDA) and the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). For example, by law, when advertising a vehicle price, whether it’s in the paper, on a website, or on a sign on the vehicle itself, the advertised price must be an ‘all-in price’. In other words, dealers may not add any additional charges other than HST and licensing (unless these charges are for options the consumer chose such as an extended warranty). Charges for freight, pre delivery expenses, administration fees, or any other fees, must be included in the advertised price. The MVDA also requires dealers to disclose information relating to a vehicle’s past-use, history and condition including: • Damage in excess of $3,000 (if they know the $ amount they must disclose it) • If the vehicle was previously registered in another province or state • If the vehicle was branded • An accurate description of the distance the vehicle has travelled

• If the vehicle requires repairs to major components • All material facts about the vehicle And this is just a partial list; the law requires even more disclosures and the CPA makes it clear dealers may not make a false, misleading, or deceptive representation, nor may they act unconscionably. For those in the market for a new or used vehicle, these are good reasons to consider buying from a registered dealer because consumers who buy privately are not protected by the MVDA or CPA. If something goes wrong in a private purchase, OMVIC cannot assist the buyer nor can a private purchaser make a claim to the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund. So if you’re dreaming of sugar plums or a new set of wheels this holiday season, or simply like tracking down a great deal in the snow and gloom of winter, get educated. Learn what your rights are as a car buyer and when they apply. Buy from someone you trust. Make your holidays bright, and don’t let a curbsiding Grinch rip you off.

HAVE YOU HAD A TRIP, SLIP OR FALL? KNOW YOUR RIGHTS… People are unfortunately injured everyday, crossing the street, walking in the mall or store, entertaining with friends at a club. Q: I was walking on the sidewalk and tripped on a crack in the cement. Can I pursue the City for compensation? The crack in the sidewalk or the unevenness in the sidewalk has to be significant enough for you to seek relief from the City or its insurer. A very small crack or an uneven sidewalk barely visible to the naked eye will not result in any relief for you. Municipalities are traditionally tough adversaries. As your lawyers, we will guide you towards proving that the City was negligent and that you deserve compensation for your pain and suffering and losses. Let’s Be Flea Free

Most pet owners have had a problem with fleas at one time or another. Female fleas lay 25 eggs a day which means it can produce about 800 eggs in its lifetime. Peak flea season is generally August to October, however, here in Ontario it begins in June and can last longer with warmer temperatures. LAURA: One year I moved into an apartment that I had no idea had been infested. Adult fleas can remain dormant for several months until favourable conditions such as temperature, carbon dioxide or vibrations signaling the presence of a host. All of this will stimulate the flea’s life cycle. Hence, when I moved into that vacant apartment, we got attacked by the adult fleas. After seeing fleas jump and run all over my cat’s body as well as waking up with bites all over me, I had to take on this nasty insect. I tried powders, shampoos, lotions, potions, collars, professional pest control, constantly cleaning, you name it. I vowed I’d never go through that again. It’s all about prevention for me. There are various products on the market that your vet can recommend. I use two different kinds: one specific for cats and one for the size of my dog. I like the topical brands. My pets aren’t good at taking pills. My dog is very active outdoors and travels often with me to different environments so she needs to be protected. The product I use on her offers a full spectrum of parasite and flea prevention. It covers it all — flea, whipworm, hookworm, round worm, heartworm, otodectes (ear mites), sarcoptes (mangemites),

demodex (skin mites). Using these products has worked well. I haven’t had a flea problem in years. I will reinforce what your vet says about reading all the information carefully on application. I have to admit, I would prefer to use a natural preventative product that is strong enough to protect my pets and home but I haven’t found one yet. JEN: When I was a child, I remember this one horrible year where it seemed like anyone we knew with cats had a flea infestation. We were not the exception. My dad was constantly giving the cat flea baths, my mom vacuumed every day, and we even had exterminators spray the house a couple of times (holy chemicals!). It was horrible and I still cringe at the thought. Flash forward many years, and I haven’t seen any signs of them on my dogs. I avoid giving them anything with chemicals, including an annual flea/heartworm prescription from the vet. Neither of them are fed processed food, so their immune systems are in optimal shape, which makes them less susceptible to fleas. But, for some reason, I noticed in September that one of our dogs was scratching away at flea bites. I had to get on the case pronto. I’ll admit

that my first instinct was to go to the vet and get a prescription. The thought of another infestation had me running scared. But after the initial panic subsided, I took a deep breath and decided to try natural solutions first. By adding brewer’s yeast to his diet, and adding some neem oil (a natural flea repellent suggested by Heronview Raw & Natural) to some all natural flea repelling anti-itch shampoo, I’m happy to report that the fleas are gone. No new bites since then! We don’t have a lot of carpet at home, thankfully, but I made sure to vacuum any carpet we do have each day, and I cleaned their bedding frequently. I also spritz both dog’s undersides a couple of times a week with water that’s mixed with a few drops of neem oil to keep on repelling those nasty little fleas.

HEALTHY HOLIDAY PARTY TIPS By Michelle Betts

We are wrapping up the year 2012 and with that come lots of festivities and cheer. December is one of the busiest months we have, filled with parties and plenty of food and drink functions. It’s very easy to stray off that diet and exercise plan, and tell yourself you’ll get back on in the New Year. I’m here to stop you from making this mistake and keep you on track with some simple easy tips. tip #1: SCHEDULE YOUR EXERCISE

If you’ve been reading this publication you know you’ve heard this from me before, and I’m saying it again because it is so important, and it really works. As your schedule fills up this month with festivities, schedule your exercise accordingly. On Sunday take a look at your upcoming week and make adjustments to when you will exercise; schedule it like a meeting that CAN’T be moved.

tip #2: PLAN YOUR CHEAT MEAL

In every week I personally — and advocate this to everyone I help — have one cheat meal a week. A cheat meal is a meal in which you can eat whatever you want completely guilt free. This could be anything from pizza to nachos to a juicy burger and fries. It’s your choice. The point to having a cheat meal is that it keeps you from binging. Knowing every week you get to cheat one time will keep you on track. During this month because of all the parties it’s a good

idea to plan when you will be having your cheat meal. Pick your most important function of the week and enjoy the decadent food guilt free with your cheat meal.

xoxo Michelle For more tips follow me on twitter: @michellebetts

TIP #3: FILL UP HEALTHY

Eat a healthy meal before you attend your function. If your stomach is already full, statistics have shown that you will consume fewer calories. Another good rule is to stay away from the food and desert table. If it’s possible, have your conversations on the other side of the room.

TIP #4: LIMIT YOUR ALCOHOL Consuming excess alcoholic beverages is the fastest way to weight gain. Alcohol is empty calories. Try and limit your alcohol consumption to a few drinks a week, and always drink lots of water to keep you hydrated and staying full. I wish all of you a wonderful season. Follow these simple tips to keep you on track this December, and help you go into 2013 feeling guilt free and healthy! Have a happy new year too!

how to plan a spectacular

holiday

party by Alana Anderson ‘Tis the season! That’s right! The season of joy, love and happiness has swept its way back to our lives very quickly this year. Unless you’re just a kid, this joyous season can also cause a lot of stress on every one of us. No, not only because your in-laws will be knocking at your door; and no, not just because of the hard-hit your bank account is about to take. The real terrors are the stresses involved with planning a great holiday party.

ativity, so make your party personal! Inviting friends and family into your home is a great opportunity to really showcase your personality. Pick a theme, invent a new holiday hors d’oeuvre, grab the reindeer sweater your grandma made you, put on your favourite tunes and invite everyone you know, because this year is going to be different. Start with a great invitation; this is what is going to excite everyone for your very own “spectacular personalized holiday bonanza”. I can’t stress this enough: MAKE IT PERSONAL. My favourites are the ones with a picture of the host on the front. Although the best invites are the ones with the whole family dressed in tacky festive outfits. If you and your family love sports, make it sports themed. If you’re family loves Batman, dress as Batman and pose in front of the Christmas tree. Whatever you want! Even embarrass your pets by forcing them into absurd costumes and send that out! It’s not about trying to impress anyone, it’s about expressing yourself! Also spend some time thinking about how you want your decorations to look this year. Are you going to go to the nearest department store

Kudos to you, Almighty party host — this is going to be a fun night! Whether it’s your first try or your hundredth time hosting, your main objective should be to just have fun. It seems as though every year’s events consist of the same things: Aunt Janice makes her classic cranberry cheese concoctions, Great Uncle Bill will undoubtedly drink his whole bowl of spiked eggnog singlehandedly (before anyone even gets a taste!), and you may leave your office party with a little less respect for your co-workers than before. What I propose is host a party yourself this year. Not another cookie-cutter, Martha Stewart holiday party; make it as unique as possible! The best parties stem from cre-

and buy up all the generic holiday decorations or are you going to make your own? Decorate your house with all the things that you like best. Stick with your favourite holiday colours and your style of décor. After all, it’s YOUR party! Don’t feel pressured to put out every snowman candle and every glittered ornament you have in the basement. Now when I think holiday party, I think food. If your family is not standing by the bar, chances are they are going to be standing by the buffet. Encourage guests to bring their favourite dishes and have a potluck; this will not only add variety but it will definitely help with your budget. Put a spin on a classic non-holiday meal. So go ahead and throw a spiced mac’n’cheese in the oven or get festive with decorated brownies and cake pops. Whatever you do, don’t forget the eggnog … or the rum for that matter. Although your guests will be buzzing around the house, make sure you pick some good music to set the tone of the party. Keep it crowd pleasing. Throw on the classic “Christmas with the Rat Pack” or the smooth sounds of Michael Bublé’s “Christmas”. But it’s up to you so if you prefer, I encourage you to throw on any of your favourite albums and dance all night long; let loose! At the end of the day the ultimate reason for hosting a holiday party is to be surrounded by those you love. Don’t spend all of December stressing for your party. When the big night comes and guests start pouring through your front door, forget everything and enjoy yourself! Spend your night the way you want to! Kudos to you “Almighty party host”, this is going to be a fun night! www.onthego.to 57

delicious holiday hams

Whether the centerpiece of a holiday meal or the key to a delicious sandwich, the appeal of ham is far reaching. The classic hams found at local grocery stores and butcher shops are produced from lean cuts of pork that have been either smoked, cured, dry salted or a combination of these methods. Ontario Pork has some tips for selecting and preparing your next ham.

Fully-Cooked Smoked Hams

ham Glazes

Try one of these delicious glazes when you cook your ham for the holidays:

There are several different types of fully-cooked hams to choose from:

Old Fashioned Glaze Combine 2 cups (500 mL) brown sugar with 2 Tbsp (30 mL) EACH all-purpose flour and corn syrup, 2 tsp (10 mL) dry mustard, and 3 Tbsp (45 mL) white wine vinegar; mix well.

Bone-In or Boneless • Most people feel that hams with the bone still in are more flavourful. However, hams with the bone removed are easier to carve. Spiral-Sliced • These are usually bone-in hams that have been presliced into a continuous shape for convenient serving. The difficulties of carving a bone-in ham are solved, however the slices may tend to dry out because they are pre-cut.

Canadian Maple Glaze Combine ¼ cup (50 mL) EACH Dijon mustard and maple syrup with ½ tsp (2 mL) dried thyme; mix well. Maple-Ginger Glaze Combine ¼ cup (125 mL) maple syrup, 2 Tbsp (30 mL) all-purpose flour, 1 Tbsp (15 mL) EACH Dijon mustard and lemon juice and a dash of powdered ginger; mix well.

Dinner Hams • Dinner hams are made of meat that is chopped and packed in a “football” shape. These usually have added water and so are less expensive than whole hams. Flavoured • Some hams will come with additional flavouring such as maple or Black Forest.

cooking instructions

Fully-cooked hams are best if heated through and served with a glaze. Pre-heat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and cook, uncovered, until an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C) is reached (use a meat thermometer to check that ham has reached correct

temperature). A fully-cooked whole ham will take about 15 to 18 minutes per pound (500 g), while a fullycooked half-ham will need about 18 to 24 minutes per pound (500 g). Fresh (uncooked) ham or pork leg needs to be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) just like

a pork roast. Never baste ham with its drippings during cooking or it will be too salty. Instead, prepare a glaze and apply it during the final 30 minutes of cooking.

Jarlsberg Fondue with Herb Croutons ingredients

2½ cups (600 g) Jarlsberg 1¼ cups (300 ml) dry white wine 1 clove garlic 1 Tbsp cornstarch ½ cup (100 ml) milk nutmeg pepper or cayenne

HERB CROUTONS 1 white loaf 4 Tbsp herbs (tarragon, basil, flat leaf parsley) ½ cup (100 ml) sunflower oil (or other cooking oil) salt

heat and carefully add half the Jarlsberg. When the cheese has almost melted, add the rest of the cheese and let it simmer for a couple of minutes. Stir until smooth. Add the spices and serve with herb croutons. Remember to serve in a hot pot or the fondue will get very thick.

Jarlsberg Muffins with Honey and Walnuts ingredients

directions

⅔ cup (150 g) flour 3½ tsp baking powder ¾ tsp salt 5 tsp (25 g) butter 1 egg ½ cup (100 ml) milk ¼ cup (50 g) honey ¼ cup (50 g) chopped walnuts Zest of 1 lemon ¼ cup (50 g) Jarlsberg, grated

Preheat oven to 375° F. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Beat egg and milk together with a fork, and add to dry mixture, stirring until just moistened. Add honey, walnuts, lemon zest and grated Jarlsberg. Spoon batter into greased muffin tins, filling ⅔ full. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

All those in favour of home-baked holiday goodness say,

eqe The mellow, slightly nutty taste of Jarlsberg adds delicious warmth to cheese-based appetizers like these meltingly crispy phyllo triangles with cranberry, walnut and Jarlsberg. Grilled Potato and Smoked Salmon Canapés

By Emily Richards • Here is a different way to serve up a classic party favourite – a crisp potato slice serves as a foundation for cream cheese and smoked salmon. Healthy and delicious!

ingredients 3 red or white round Ontario potatoes (about 12-oz/375 g), scrubbed 2 Tbsp (25 mL) extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp (10 mL) chopped fresh dill ¼ tsp (1 mL) each salt & pepper ¾ cup (175 mL) light cream cheese, softened 2 Tbsp (25 mL) milk 2 Tbsp (25 mL) finely diced red onion or shallot 1 Tbsp (15 mL) drained capers, chopped

1 Tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh Italian parsley 3 oz (90 g) smoked salmon slices Fresh dill sprigs

directions Slice potatoes into 1/4-inch (5-mm) thick slices and place in large bowl. Add oil, dill, salt and pepper and toss to coat evenly. Place potato slices on greased grill over medium high heat and grill about 12 minutes, turning once

or until golden brown and crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Remove to large platter. Meanwhile, in bowl beat together cream cheese, milk, onions, capers and parsley. Dollop cream cheese mixture evenly onto potato slices. Cut smoked salmon into thin strips and place on top of cream cheese. Garnish with small fresh dill sprigs. Makes about 24 appetizers. Tip: Try other smoked fish like trout and mackerel in place of the salmon.

cinnamon buns

By Emily Richards • This fluffy potato dough is the perfect way to wrap up sweet buttery brown sugar and cinnamon. Prepare the dough ahead the night before and then bake the cinnamon buns the next morning for a brunch or when guests are over for coffee.

ingredients

directions

8 oz (250 g) long white Ontario potatoes, peeled and cubed 3 Tbsp (45 mL) granulated sugar 2 Tbsp (25 mL) active dry yeast ½ cup (125 mL) warm water ⅓ cup (75 mL) butter, melted ½ tsp (2 mL) salt 2 eggs 3 cups (750mL) all purpose flour (approx)

In saucepan, cover potatoes with water and bring to boil. Boil for 15 minutes or until tender. Drain and return to saucepan, add all but ½ tsp (2 mL) of the sugar into potatoes and mash. Let cool completely. Meanwhile, in large bowl, dissolve remaining sugar in water. Sprinkle with yeast and let stand for about 10 minutes or until frothy. Whisk in butter and cooled potato mixture, salt and eggs. Stir in 2¾ cups (675 mL) of the flour to form sticky dough. Turn out onto floured surface and knead in remaining flour for about 5 minutes or until smooth. Place in greased bowl, cover and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in bulk. Punch down dough. Cinnamon Sugar Filling: In small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon;

Cinnamon Sugar Filling: ⅓ cup (75 mL) butter, very soft 1 cup (250 mL) packed brown sugar 1 Tbsp (15 mL) cinnamon

Cream Cheese Icing: ½ cup (125 mL) cream cheese, softened 2 Tbsp (25 mL) butter, softened ¾ cup (175 mL) icing sugar 3 Tbsp (45 mL) whipping (35%) cream

set aside. Roll dough on floured surface to 14×20 inches (35×50 cm). Spread dough with butter and sprinkle with sugar filling. Starting at long side roll up tightly and pinch seam to close. Using serrated knife, cut into 12 pieces and place in parchment paper lined 13×9 inch (3 L) pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes or until doubled. Bake in 375°F (190°C) oven for about 30 minutes or until golden. Let cool slightly. Cream cheese Icing: In bowl, using electric hand mixer, beat cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Beat in icing sugar and whipping cream until creamy. Spread over cinnamon buns before serving. Makes 12 buns. Tip: You can omit the cream cheese icing and simply whisk together icing sugar and ¼ cup (50 mL) whipping cream until smooth and drizzle over the cinnamon buns.

Tony Aspler’s Wine Picks

No better time than the Holidays to try some amazing sweet and sparkling wines. Here’s a few of my favourites for this time of year.

Tarlant Zéro Brut Nature Champagne (Champagne)

Great Wine D iscoveries

Zéro Brut Nature — this descriptor tells the whole story. No sweetening wine was added after disgorging which means the wine is totally dry. On the nose, a bouquet of white flowers and green peach with a mineral note. Very elegant and lingering on the palate. ***** (91) Food match: smoked salmon; oysters. $44.95 • Vintages #996264

Tony Aspler has been writing about wine for over 30 years. His latest book is “Tony Aspler’s Cellar Book.” Get more of his recommendations at www.tonyaspler.com

Paladin Tondo Dry Prosecco (Veneto)

Prosecco is a bargain hunter’s Champagne. This one is pale straw with a coppery tint. The nose offers pear and green pepper aromas with a floral grace note. Light and easy on the palate, it shades to off-dry in flavour with a sweetish pear skin taste and a zesty acidic finish. **** (87) Food match: aperitif wine; crab cakes. $17.95 • LCBO #299834.

Peller Estates Ice Cuvée Rosé (Ontario)

This wine is an artful blend of sparkling wine and Cabernet Franc Icewine. Deep pink in colour, it has a nose of cherries and raspberry preserve. It’s full on the palate with an appetizingly off-dry flavour that finishes dry with sour cherry note. A very easy drinking and friendly sparkler. **** (90) Food match: baked ham; pork chops. $34.95 • Vintages #113035 www.onthego.to 77

 Icewine 2010 (Ontario)
Inniskillin taught the world about Cabernet Franc Icewine is not 2009 (Ontario)
Canadian Icewine and this Riesling as sweet as Vidal or Riesling. Good things come in small packages. This Vidal Icewine is golden straw in colour with a high toned nose of honey and peaches. It fills the mouth with its unctuous sweetness and is rescued from going over the top by driving acidity that cleanses the palate. ***** (90) Food match: blue cheese; foie gras. $25.95 • Vintages #565861

is just a joy to taste. The wine is the colour of old gold with a lifted nose of honey, peaches and tropical fruit. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a rich, spicy flavour, not overly sweet but long in the mouth with refreshing acidity. ***** (91) Food match: fruit-based desserts; Stilton. $69.95 • Vintages #558288

The colour here is tawny orange and the nose is redolent with the scent of strawberries and rhubarb compote with a honeyed note. Flavours of pink grapefruit, strawberries and cranberries fill the mouth; the finish is firm with a touch of tannin. ***** (90) Food match: hazelnut torte; dark chocolate desserts. $39.95 • Vintage #672402
