Cybersecurity in 2025: Staying Ahead of Smarter Threats
Submitted by SBTDC (with insights from CISA, NIST, and Deloitte)
Cyber threats keep evolving, and it’s no different for 2025. According to Deloitte’s Annual Cyber Threat Trends Report 2025, ransomware remains the most common cyberattack and hackers now use artificial intelligence (AI) to create more convincing phishing emails. AI has become a key enabler for cybercriminals, helping them craft targeted and persuasive scams at scale.
As technical protections improve, criminals are shifting their focus to exploit human behavior, a weak point in most systems. Many attacks still target outdated or unpatched software, or take advantage of users who click before they think.
To stay secure, small businesses can lean on proven frameworks and free federal resources from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Both agencies offer step-by-step guidance to strengthen cyber resilience and build security into daily operations for small business owners.
1. Use Stronger Logins with FIDO Protection
Hackers often steal passwords to break into accounts. Regular multi-factor authentication (MFA), such as text codes, can sometimes be tricked. The CISA Cyber Guidance for Small Businesses recommends using FIDO (Fast Identity Online), a more secure form of MFA that uses built-in tools like fingerprint readers, Face ID, or small physical security keys.
FIDO authentication makes it much harder for hackers to steal or reuse your login credentials. It’s already built into most modern devices and browsers; simply turn on “Passkeys” in your Google, Apple, or Microsoft accounts, or purchase FIDO-certified security keys for employees handling sensitive data. Look
for certified products through fidoalliance.org.
2. Keep Your Software Up to Date
Both Deloitte and NIST’s Small Business Quick-Start Guide stress that unpatched software is one of the top causes of breaches. Updates fix known vulnerabilities that attackers exploit.
Set your systems, apps, and devices to update automatically, especially for users with special access or administrative permissions. The NIST Protect Function also recommends enabling full-disk encryption on laptops and tablets, regularly backing up your data, and testing those backups. These simple steps create strong layers of defense.
3. Train Your Team and Have a Plan
Technology alone can’t stop every threat, your people are your first line of defense. Teach employees to recognize common red flags:
• Urgent or emotional requests
• Messages asking for personal or financial information
• Shortened or suspicious URLs
• Incorrect sender addresses or subtle spelling errors
Remind staff to report suspicious messages rather than respond or click links, even those labeled “unsubscribe.”
CISA encourages small businesses to build a simple Incident Response Plan, a clear checklist for who to call, how to report, and how to contain damage if an incident occurs. NIST’s Respond and Recover Functions echo this: practice your plan through in-person exercises, document lessons learned, and review afteraction reports to improve.
4. Identify What You’ re Protecting
Before you can defend your business, you need to know what’s at risk. NIST’s Identify Function recommends making a list of your key assets (hardware, software, systems, and sensitive data) and identifying who manages each.
Understanding which data is most valuable helps you prioritize where to invest your protection efforts. As your business grows, consider reviewing this inventory annually and using tools to automate asset tracking.
5. Stay Current and Connected
Cybersecurity tools and threats change quickly. Following trusted sources keeps you one step ahead. Bookmark:
• CISA.gov for alerts, best practices, and free toolkits
• NIST.gov/cyberframework for templates, training, and risk management guidance
• Local business associations or chambers of commerce, which often share alerts and workshops tailored for small businesses
Staying informed and sharing what you learn helps your
entire team adapt quickly and protect what you’ve built.
Cybersecurity Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
By combining CISA’s practical tools with NIST’s clear framework, small businesses can build a solid foundation for security without needing a full IT department. Stronger logins, regular updates, employee awareness, and clear response plans can go a long way in keeping your business safe and ready for what’s next.

Chamber Corner: Chamber Involvement
By Tammy Proctor Executive Director
Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism
Membership has its privileges. Do you remember the American Express slogan?
Chamber of Commerce membership has its privileges. It gives us entrance to programs, networking, educational opportunities, and a voice in issues and policies.
Chambers of Commerce across the nation have different programs, different “reach,” and different benefits.
Joining a Chamber is like becoming a member of a gym. You gain access to the benefits of the gym.
Like joining a gym, you must take action. You must take a workout class or exercise on the equipment to benefit from your
membership. A Chamber of Commerce membership is based on the same principle. You have to attend. You must participate in a program that meets your business needs. You must exercise the programs offered by a Chamber.
Yet, putting your name on a Chamber of Commerce roll call is more than a membership. It’ s more than paying an annual “due.”
Chamber membership is an investment.
It’s an investment in your business growth. It is an investment in your staff when you encourage them to participate in networking, leadership, and educational classes.
Chamber membership is an investment in the business community. Your investment allows the Chamber to pay for staff, to market the community, to organize events and programs.
Your investment with other community business partners is a collective voice, a show of force, a power to be acknowledged.
At the Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism, we value every member. We strive to initiate programs that assist in the growth of your business as well as your personal wealth.
Swansboro Chamber of Commerce 714 W Corbett Avenue Suite 14 Swansboro, NC 28584 910.326.1174
We strive for more. We strive to provide more workshops, more education, more networking, and more marketing – all for the membership.
Because membership has its privileges, an annual investment in the Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is an investment in your business and in your community.

An Anniversary Present: Resources for Your Business
No business is an island. You need resources to launch, sustain, and grow a successful business.
We are including lists and descriptions of resources available to you and your business throughout Onslow County in this anniversary issue of Onslow Business
Many of these resources are available at little or no cost. Others are business owners themselves who are focused on helping small businesses move through each stage of their growth.
There are also resources in the form of guidance and advice provided by experts in their fields. Read through each article to learn more about cybersecurity, employment trends, and more.
Note that federal resources may not be available at press time. When those offices do re-open, they will probably need time to catch up with requests so be patient with them.
However, state and other organizations are open and ready to help.
The resource information follows on pages 8 and 9.
Keep this issue to use as a reference as you work on and in your business going forward.
Let us know which resources you found most valuable and whether you’ve found new ones to add to future lists.

The New Job Hunt Reality: More Seekers, Longer Timelines, Greater
Required Flexibility
Twenty-five percent expect a six-month search, and 83% are willing to take different roles to secure work.
By Cowanda Bazile
The labor market is sending mixed signals, and America’ s job seekers are taking notice. While employers may feel confident, workers are bracing for a tougher road ahead, and many are already making moves.
The latest Express Employment Professionals–Harris Poll survey paints a clear picture: nearly 8 in 10 job seekers (78%) believe employers have the upper hand in today’s market. That perception is fueling action. Forty-four percent of job seekers are actively looking for a new job, a steady climb from 41% in fall 2024 and just 35% in spring 2024.
But optimism is in short supply:
• 59% believe it will be harder to find a job in the next six months, up significantly from 48% in fall 2024 who believed there were fewer job opportunities.
• 48% now believe there are fewer job opportunities than a year ago, a sharp increase from 33% in fall 2024.
• 25% expect it will take more than six months to find a job.
• 48% still hope for a wage increase within the next year, though confidence is waning.
And for some, the timeline feels daunting: one in four job
seekers (25%) expect it will take more than six months to find a job, signaling growing anxiety about the future.
Challenges Ahead
Finding the right fit remains the biggest hurdle. More than half (52%) say their top challenge is finding opportunities that match their qualifications, while 46% worry about landing a job quickly enough to cover basic expenses. Another 44% struggle to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.
Barriers compound these challenges:
• 43% cite lack of relevant experience
• 36% point to limited openings in their field
• 30% say their skills don’t align with employer demands
Flexibility Becomes a Survival Strategy
Faced with uncertainty, job seekers are broadening their horizons. Eighty-three percent are willing to accept a different role than initially planned, and 75% would consider temporary or contract work. Some are even willing to make bigger sacrifices 24% would relocate, 23% would switch industries and 19% would take a pay cut.
Why They’re Leaving and What They Fear
The motivations for change are clear 42% want better pay, 39% seek improved work-life balance and 31% are chasing career advancement.
At the same time, fears about current roles loom large:
• 40% worry about layoffs
• 31% fear reduced hours or pay
• 31% see no path for advancement
“Lead with your skills and stay flexible. Be open to different job sites, shift options, and realistic pay ranges, because the more adaptable you are, the more opportunities you’ll uncover.” Randy Bazile, USN (Ret.), Co-Owner, Express Employment Professionals
(Jacksonville & New Bern).
Survey Methodology
The Job Seeker Report was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Express Employment Professionals from June 12 to 27, 2025, among 1,000 adults ages 18 and older.

Task Force Launches to Address Child Care Crisis in Onslow County
Submitted by One Place
Local nonprofit One Place, in collaboration with the Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce, launched a Child Care and Early Education Task Force in October to convene business leaders, community partners, and key stakeholders to address the current state of child care in the community. Child care and early education are vital to the families, workforce, and economy in Onslow County. The community is experiencing a child care crisis driven by limited access to care, high costs, and workforce shortages. Onslow County is considered a “child care desert” with an average of one licensed child care slot available for every five families.
“The crisis isn't getting better, and our children need more," said One Place CEO Dawn Rochelle. "This is a business, workforce, and community matter. To have any solution, we have to have government, advocacy, philanthropy, and the business community at the table. That's the way that this community has moved so many needles in the past, and it's the way we continue to show up to be able to be the best community for children in North Carolina.”
Availability, affordability, and workforce challenges all contribute to the crisis, impacting Onslow County’ s economy to the tune of between $197,736,150 and $301,325,830 each year.
“When you look at that number, it seems
overwhelming. But that’s a net loss of income for a family if they’re not able to secure child care. That may impact an employer not having a workforce for their business, which impacts revenue,” said Stacey Knox, chief growth officer at One Place. “As an impact on the total economy, that’s tax-based revenue that’ s not coming back into our community. So, it’s a huge loss when we don’t have access to child care for working families and families going to school.”
The initial meeting of the core group included representatives from Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce, Coastal Carolina Community College, City of Jacksonville, Onslow County Schools, Marine & Family Programs, New River YMCA, NC Military Affairs Committee, Onslow
County Department of Social Services, Carobell, One Place Board of Directors, and the local business community.
Roundtable meetings will begin in December, and Knox encourages everyone to “watch our social media or individuals can reach out to me at stacey.knox@oneplaceonslow. org for more information.”
Prior to the meetings, One Place is conducting surveys “to gather community information from various populations affected by the current child care challenges.”

November: Grow Through Gratitude
By Jessica Marshall Run It Right Business and Mindset Coaching
As we approach the holiday season, November invites us to pause. Not to lose momentum, but to reflect on what really fuels it. Gratitude isn’t just a feel-good word; it’s a strategy for strength. It reminds us that every challenge we’ve faced, every late night, and every small win has built the foundation we stand on today.
Les Brown said, “You don’t get in life what you want, you get in life what you are.” That truth hits differently when you ’ve lived a real, hardworking life where success isn’t handed to you, but earned through consistency, grit, and grace. We become the results of our habits, our attitudes, and our daily disciplines. Gratitude shapes all three.
This month, lead with appreciation. Take a moment to notice how far you’ ve come: the clients who believed in you, the lessons learned through struggle, the quiet progress that no one else saw, the employees
who show up day after day. Gratitude doesn’t make you soft; it keeps you steady. It keeps you humble enough to learn and strong enough to keep moving forward.
Admin Advice: Express Gratitude and Streamline Operations
Appreciate Your Team:
Whether you have one employee or ten, take time to genuinely thank them. A handwritten note, a small gesture, or public recognition can renew their motivation.
Thank Your Loyal Customers: Offer an exclusive discount, a heartfelt message, or a “thank you” post or event. Gratitude builds loyalty and loyalty sustains business.
Streamline Before the Rush: Audit your shipping, fulfillment, and communication systems. Smooth operations make
the holiday season easier for you and your customers.
Polish Your Online Store: Make sure your website runs fast, your checkout is seamless, and your visuals reflect the warmth of the season. Small details create big impressions.
November is a reminder that success isn’t just about pushing harder because it’s about becoming better. Gratitude grounds you in what matters most, and from that place, you lead with both confidence and compassion.
Business Success Summit a Resounding Success
The Business Success Summit featured a lineup of experts sharing their guidance and advice, an array of vendors offering services and products to businesses, a day of networking, and a lot of fun.
When asked if anyone in the room had met someone new during the first break, almost everyone raised their hand. That is the mark of a successful networking event.
When asked if anyone learned something new during the event, again almost everyone raised their hand.
We learned about optimizing social media, managing our financial records, making the most of AI, and doing business with the military.
The Summit culminated with an encouraging and engaging discussion of how to have fun in the workplace, presented by Ospreys founder and owner Eli Patino.
One major factor in the Summit being such a huge success was the group of participants. Everyone was engaged, offered their own stories, and asked questions.
Another major factor was the group of sponsors. Once again, we thank Sizemore Insurance, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Treasure, and Marine Federal Credit Union for their support.
The Summit will be an annual event going forward. Look for information and details on registration mid-2026.
We are excited about the possibilities for the Second Annual Business Success Summit and hope you will join us next fall.
You’ve worked hard to get where you are, take time to appreciate that truth. The same perseverance that brought you through the tough seasons is the same strength that will carry you into the next year.
Gratitude is a discipline, not a mood. Choose it daily. When you do, you won’t just get what you want but you’ll become the kind of person who’s ready for it.

Onslow Memorial Hospital Shares Quality Improvements
By Victoria Morales, OMH PR and Marketing Manager
Onslow Memorial Hospital shared some quality improvement updates made to the Emergency Department during Emergency Nurses Week.
Over the last 10 months, the physicians, nurses and entire care team have collaborated to improve patient flow and patient experience in the Emergency Department. The team broke down every segment of a patient visit and identified opportunities at each touchpoint to improve the timeliness of care. One of the most significant areas of improvement occurred at the intake step upon patient arrival. Now, as patients arrive at the ED, they are greeted by a Registered Nurse (RN), rather than a patient access teammate. The RN immediately initiates the patient's evaluation thereby kickstarting a serious of events that improves the timeliness of being seen by an ED provider.
“Our Emergency Nurses and teammates care for patients on what is most likely the worst day of that patient's life,” said Crystal Bryan, Interim Chief Nursing Officer. “No one wants to find themselves in an emergency room, but our
nurses and care team show up every day to provide the best care for our community. We knew that there were systemic barriers that we needed to overcome. ”
In fiscal year 2024-2025, OMH initiated process updates to enhance ‘Arrival to Bed’ and ‘Arrival to Provider' processes, aiming to reduce the number of patients who left without being seen by a provider. In 2024, Arrival to Bed, which is the time from reception to being in an exam room, was 44 minutes; year to date, Arrival to Bed is now 13 minutes. In 2024, Arrival to Provider, which is the time of reception to when a doctor signed on to a case, was 44 minutes. Year to date, Arrival to Provider is now 18 minutes. Patients who left without being seen by a provider was 3.88% in 2024, and now it is 1.28%. *All Times are Median
“We are thrilled to use ED Nurses Week as an opportunity to reintroduce our community to the Emergency Department,” said Dr. John Kohler, Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer. “Our team is acutely aware of our past reputation.
The nurses and staff have been committed to changing that perception by diligently identifying opportunities to
patient experience. The positive scores and feedback we have received demonstrate that our efforts are making a real difference.”
Patients are noticing the difference. In recent patient feedback, one respondent said, “I was brought back within 30 minutes of arrival. My vitals were taken and the PA was evaluating me at the same time.”
Another respondent said, “I’ m very pleased and will have no problem using the ER or hospital again. I have full confidence in them.”
Other respondents have praised the providers, “Dr. Kolb was excellent, very professional, but at the same time very kind and caring and down to earth.”
“I still have my flow maps, and we continue to tweak our processes as needed, always
improvement, said Dr. Terrance Kolb, Emergency Department Program Director, and Apollo MD Physician. “I’ m grateful to the entire ED care team and OMH leadership for supporting this quality improvement project and dedicating the resources needed for its success.”
