Patino Lined Up as Business Summit Keynote

Baseball and business are focused on being successful, but both are also all about building a community and having fun in the process.

Eli Patino has been successful with all aspects of business and baseball, as the founder and owner of the Jacksonville Ospreys, and will share his experiences and his advice on having fun at the Business Success Summit on October 3.

Eli and his wife Arlin launched the Ospreys organization two years ago. They were the first to ever approach the city with the idea of bringing a baseball team to the Jacksonville/Onslow area, ready to sign a lease and to work along with the city to make it all happen

In a string of other firsts, the team plays at Jack Amyette Ballpark, which was the first recreation center in Jacksonville and was named after the city's first Recreation Director, Jack Amyette.

Eli is a Marine Corps veteran originally from Minnesota, with a long list of accomplishments in the business world. He holds a master’s in finance from UNCW, has worked for a military contractor and as a staff accountant for a local business. Arlin has been a real estate agent with Century 21 for the past 18

years. The couple have also owned the Sweet Shop in Emerald Isle since 2017.

Eli played baseball in college and has always been a fan of the game.

Player development and community involvement are important to the Patinos and to the Ospreys organization as a whole. Eli says that players come from all over the country and even a few from other countries to play baseball each summer. He says, “the players love it here” and adds “they feel the love of the community.”

Part of what players from both teams enjoy after each game, Eli says, is the food, as they always feed everyone after the game. Players also enjoy the hospitality of their host families. In fact, Eli says those host families are “the team behind the team” and he is very grateful for them.

Fan engagement is another important aspect of the Ospreys experience. Plans for the next summer season include a concession stand, the number one request of Ospreys fans. They are looking at other potential improvements as well, including shade for the stands and a new scoreboard.

The organization has been so successful that in its second year, it was selected to be the host of

Making a difference for businesses in and around the Greater Onslow County area: Jacksonville, Swansboro, Richlands, Camp Lejeune, Holly Ridge, Hubert, Sneads Ferry, North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and beyond.

the Old North State League's 2025 All Star Game and Home Run Derby.

Area businesses have been overwhelmingly supportive of the collegiate team. Arlin says they had over 60 sponsors sign up for the 2025 season and “sold out of field space.”

People can have fun at work and be successful, Eli believes, and he and Arlin exemplify that philosophy.

Trask Land Company Breaks Ground in Burton Park

New medical office building to boost economic development and host staff from Onslow Memorial Hospital

(From news release issued by Onslow County)

Burton Park welcomes a new medical office building for Onslow Memorial Hospital. On Monday, August 11, 2025 at 9AM elected leaders, Onslow Memorial Hospital representatives, and developers from Trask Land Company broke ground on the $14 million project at 172 NW Corridor Blvd.

The 36,000 square foot, two story facility is part of a public private partnership between Trask Land Company and Onslow County to boost economic development. The medical office building is the first phase of a proposed mixed

-use facility that could also host retail and restaurants. Trask Land Company expects the initial facility to open in January 2027.

Board of Commissioners Chairman Timothy Foster says this project will likely seed future development.

“Facilities like this medical office building and planned mixed-use space will inspire more businesses to come to Burton Park and the surrounding area. This initial development makes it a viable place to come create jobs and bring more money and opportunities into Onslow County.”

In 1997 Onslow County purchased the 730-acre property that would become Burton Park for $630,000

to create business opportunities. The site is currently home to a variety of businesses and amenities including industrial, commercial, childcare, education, government, and recreation facilities.

The incentivized grant agreement with Trask Land Company is an innovative

approach to growth and development and is part of Onslow County’s strategic goal of creating a Focused and Sustainable Future.

Where Chickens Come Home to Roost

A favorite family fried chicken recipe has inspired a new chicken sandwich restaurant in Jacksonville. Appropriately named Roost, the eatery was launched by Curtis Abruzzo and his brother Nick, who also help operate their father’ s restaurant, Abruzzo’s Pizza.

Curtis Abruzzo says that when they were considering what to do with the space, “my brother came up with the chicken sandwiches because his wife is a very good cook and she has this fried chicken recipe.” He describes their offerings as a “real simple menu,” featuring chicken sandwiches, tenders, and wings as well as a chicken waffle plate.

Using his sister-in-law Elizabeth’s recipe, Curtis explains, they prepare everything fresh when it is ordered. The chicken is all hand breaded. He describes it as “real food. No preservatives or artificial colors.”

Curtis has been in the restaurant business for many years, having managed “ a couple of places around town.” He and Nick helped dad Gary Abruzzo launch his first pizza restaurant in Piney Green a little over 11 years ago. They added a second location on Western Boulevard about eight years ago. Roost is next door to the original pizza spot, on Balsam Road.

Piney Green is home to Curtis and his family. He says he “grew up right around the corner,” in Walnut Creek and Hunters Creek so Roost is literally and figuratively “close to home.”

Their Piney Green location works well for Roost. They are located just across the street from White Oak High School. There are not many food establishments along the road between Western Blvd and Lejeune Blvd.

Gary Abruzzo retired after 27 years in the Marine Corps. Originally from New York, the family moved to Piney Green in 2001. Curtis says it was “always a goal of the family to open the pizzeria.”

Dad Gary still helps with the “back of the house” administrative work, such as taxes and insurance. Curtis describes his father as “kind of the brains” who helped set up everything. Curtis credits his mother as well, as she does a lot of the space and menu design and orders supplies. He adds, “all of us pulled together.”

When considering the new restaurant, Curtis says, “ we really didn’t know what we were going to do with it.” Initially, he and his brother considered “burgers and beers and a little bar or something like that.” Then his brother came up with the idea of the chicken sandwiches.

The simple menu has been a hit in the short time that Roost has been open. There are also sides and desserts, including churro ice cream and a chocolate chip cookie ice cream. “And the fried pickles are really good,” Curtis adds.

The fried chicken recipe that launched Roost has become very popular, even though they also offer grilled chicken on the menu. They also make their own ranch dressing. Curtis says the sweet and sour nuggets are “real popular” as well.

Future plans may include bone-in chicken, starting with legs and thighs. They may also add “mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, stuff like that,” Curtis adds. Keeping the menu simple is important to them, though. Curtis says they will also be offering delivery service in the next few months.

Unleashing Team Spirit:

How Volunteering Transforms Businesses and Boosts Community in Onslow County

In today’s fast-paced business world, fostering strong team dynamics is crucial for success. One innovative approach that many businesses are embracing is volunteering, which not only enriches the community, but also strengthens team bonds and enhances workplace morale.

The Benefits of Team Volunteering

Strengthening Relationships: When employees come together for volunteer activities, they have a chance to see each other in a whole new way! Working side by side on a common goal helps build camaraderie. This teamwork doesn’t just stay in the community; it spills over into the workplace, leading to better communication and cooperation among colleagues. It’s all about building trust and friendships that can make the office a more enjoyable place!

Improving Company Culture: When businesses get involved in community service, they really show that they care about making a positive difference. This commitment to giving back helps build a company culture that attracts people who share similar values. Plus, employees tend to feel a sense of pride working for a company that actively supports the community. It’s a great way to create a workplace where everyone feels like they’re part of something bigger!

Skill Development: Volunteering is a fantastic way for employees to pick up new skills while doing good! Whether it’s tackling problemsolving during a community project or taking the lead on a fundraising event, these activities offer great opportunities for growth. Employees can sharpen their leadership skills and learn to adapt to different situations both of which are incredibly valuable in the workplace. Plus, it’s a fun way to challenge themselves outside their usual roles!

Boosting Employee Engagement: Studies show that employees engaged in volunteer work report higher overall job satisfaction. By providing opportunities for team volunteering, businesses can boost morale and motivation, leading to increased productivity and lower turnover rates.

There’s more to consider when it comes to building a company culture focused on community and social responsibility - it also becomes a top priority for job seekers today. More and more employees want to work for companies that genuinely care about making a difference.

According to a recent survey, 79% of employees prefer to join organizations that demonstrate a commitment to having a positive impact on society*. This growing trend shows that people are looking beyond just salary and benefits; they want to work for businesses that reflect their values and ethics. By actively engaging in community service and showing they care about giving back, companies can attract talented individuals who are passionate about their work and build a loyal team that shares their vision.

Volunteering Opportunities in Onslow County

Onslow County is home to a variety of organizations that welcome business volunteer groups. Here are several options, where businesses can get involved:

Community Organizations

Coastal Carolina Rehabilitation & Health Care Center: Employees can help brighten residents' days with activities, visits, or organizing events.

Onslow County Habitat for Humanity: Participate in building homes for families in need, which encourages teamwork and collaboration.

Local Food Banks and Food Insecurity Programs (Share the Table, CHEW, Onslow Soup Kitchen to name a few) Team up to sort, pack, and distribute

food to families facing food insecurity. This not only serves the community but also fosters bonding among employees.

Lower Cape Fear LifeCare: Provide companionship to patients, assist with tasks, and participating in community events. It’s a wonderful way for employees to support individuals and families during challenging times while building strong team connections.

Youth-Focused Organizations

Rotary Club: Engage with local youth through mentorship programs and community service projects designed to promote leadership, citizenship, and community engagement.

Kiwanis Clubs of Jacksonville or Topsail Island Area: This organization focuses on serving children and families in the community. Businesses can partner in projects like organizing events, assisting with give back projects, scholarships, and youth programs.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Onslow County: Volunteer to assist with afterschool programs, mentoring, or organizing special events for local youth. This offers a chance for employees to leave a lasting impact on the next generation.

Onslow County Schools: Work with local schools on volunteer days to support students through tutoring, career day activities, and other educational initiatives.

Participating in these various volunteer opportunities not only benefits the community but also creates lasting bonds among team members. As employees come together to support meaningful causes, they strengthen their connections and enrich their workplace culture. By choosing to volunteer, businesses in

Onslow County can make a real difference while nurturing a supportive and engaged team that shares a commitment to giving back. It’s a chance to contribute to the betterment of the community while growing together as a unified force!

Conclusion

Volunteering offers an amazing opportunity for businesses in Onslow County, to connect their teams while making a positive impact in the community. When companies engage in team-building volunteer activities, it boosts morale and strengthens relationships among employees, creating a more cohesive and supportive work environment. These shared experiences not only bring teams closer together but also enhance the company’s reputation in the community. It’s truly a win-win situation: while employees enjoy the chance to bond and make lasting memories, they also feel good knowing they’re contributing to meaningful causes. The community benefits from the support and resources that businesses provide, helping to tackle local challenges together. So why not dive in? By embracing volunteering, businesses can create a vibrant culture that positively affects both their team and the community they call home!

Lead Through Uncertainty with Adaptability

The world is changing quickly and disruptions to work and business are significant. During uncertainty, leaders must adapt to support workers, while confronting their own doubts, fears and concerns.

As you face uncertainty, whether in your workplace, industry or world at large, respond to it with empathy, agility and strategy.

Brace for Being Overwhelmed

Sixty-eight percent of employees are seeking more support than ever, and 64% of professionals are overwhelmed by the pace of change at work, according to research from LinkedIn. Change management strategies that include communication, hearing employees’ concerns, and reassurance for those embracing change and those struggling to adapt may provide the support employees need.

(More info about change management is at https://

expresspros.blog/leadership/ conquer-feeling-overwhelmedwith-change-management/.)

However, leaders aren’t immune to the fast pace of change. Brace yourself for feeling overwhelmed while managing overwhelmed employees. Ensure your own support systems exist within your organization and personally so you have the support you need as you continue to lead.

Agility and Adaptability Are Key

Uncertainty means there’s not a clear path forward. Remain agile by trying new tactics, moving quickly while maintaining trust, and holding space for failure. Adapt plans and processes as needed and be aware of the moving goal post. It may be unavoidable, but recognize the individuals impacted by acknowledging their contributions and defining the next step.

Learn How You Can Help

You can’t solve everyone’ s problems, but there are actions

you can take

to make work a little easier during uncertainty. Not everyone wants to share their fears with their boss, but if you ’re willing and able, make yourself available to hear employees’ concerns and act where you can. Stay interviews create an avenue for feedback and honesty.

(More info about stay interviews is at https:// expresspros.blog/leadership/ the-power-of-stayinterviews/.)

Lean into resources provided by your organization and make your employees aware of the tools available to them. Work with HR to provide education on existing resources, or to obtain the resources employees need most during uncertainty.

Keep Moving Forward

One thing is certain, change will continue. Uncertainty can ’t be predicted and may be unexpected, but the strategies to adapt remain the same. Prioritize the most important goals and maintain communication, support and flexibility to support your employees through uncertainty as a team.

The Express office is located at 461 Western Blvd #118 Jacksonville, NC and serves the counties of Onslow, Craven, Carteret, Lenoir, and Jones.

September: Transform Through Knowledge

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, this month reminds us that life and business are in a season of transition. Just as nature shows us the beauty of change, this month calls us to refine our strategies and sharpen our edge for the months ahead.

Eric Thomas reminds us:

“Information changes situations.” Knowledge isn’t just power. It’s the lever that moves businesses forward. The ones who thrive aren’t just working hard; they’re learning, adapting, and applying fresh insights faster than the competition.

This month let’s embrace this spirit of growth by committing to learn something new; about your industry, your customers, or yourself as a leader. The

more informed you are, the more confidently you can navigate challenges and seize opportunities.

Admin Advice: Sharpen Your Business Strategies

• Analyze Your Marketing Campaigns: Review what’s working and where you’re wasting time or money. Double down on results.

• Review Pricing Strategies: Are your products and services priced to reflect their true value? Don’t be afraid to adjust.

• Explore New Channels: Social media, email, or content marketing may unlock untapped markets.

Stay in the know.

Subscribe to the Onslow Business newsletter (it’s also free!) and get news and updates delivered to your inbox.

Invest in Professional Development: Skills and knowledge compound; what you learn today pays dividends tomorrow.

September is about leaning into the changes of the season with confidence and informed strategy. Just as the seasons evolve, your business must evolve too. Reflect on the year so far and let this month be the moment you seek fresh

knowledge, refine your path, and step boldly into the final stretch of the year.

The more you learn, the stronger you grow. And the stronger you grow, the more your business transforms.
