It seems like a lifetime ago that we sent the April-May issue to print. Having stopped publishing for almost two months, it feels great to be getting the June-July issue out now.

Lockdown is beginning to ease and, if we are all sensible, we won’t experience a second wave and we can soon visit our family and friends that live further afield. Adapting to life on lockdown On 17th April DEFRA gave permission to animal rescue charities to recommence rehoming, albeit under strict protocols. It means that our adoption process is a little different at the moment due to the pandemic. In the first instance, we are not allowed to conduct any viewings of animals, instead we aim to provide a prospective adopter with as much information and images as we can of our animals and do our best to 'match' people with them. If the animals are in the centre we can do virtual meet-and-greets, which are proving very popular! If the animal is in a foster home then we try to produce videos of them in the home setting. We can no longer do in-person Grace hopped off home visits. home too! to a new

Instead we do it virtually, either through a video conference call or via photos and using online maps. If everyone agrees that A new home for they are a good match for Bhuna the animal then we will ask people to review our pre-adoption guides and provide them with a shopping list to get things ready for the new arrival! The animal can then be delivered to their new home using social distancing measures, PPE and of course, we do not enter the home. It means that we can only rehome up to 45 minutes away from the centre in Weaste, but this hasn’t stopped us from finding homes for over 80 animals since 17th April! FUN, FRIENDSHIP AND A FORUM FOR SOCIAL CHANGE Uniting women since 1929, The Townswomen's Guilds (TG) proudly continues to build on their suffrage foundations, empowering women to make their own lives, and those of others, better. TG consists of over 550 local branches, known as Guilds, and Federations, which are groups of local Guilds who work together, across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. However busy Townswomen may be, many still find the time to help those in need. Thousands of members across the country play an active role in their communities and work tirelessly to raise funds for a variety of causes. In addition, Townswomen are actively involved in a wide range of public affairs issues and effectively lobby local MPs to advance the well-being of society as a whole.
TG isn’t just about campaigning for a better world, Guilds all have their own programme of activities which include guest speakers, day trips and crafts. National events are also hosted across the country - including the annual Carol services and the AGM. During this unusual time, where Covid-19 has affected the whole world, we’re not able to meet up for a little while longer. However, Guilds across the country will be ready with open arms to welcome new members, once we’re back to it! Step Into Action by Gemma Fish, group founder
Elderly and vulnerable people have been advised to stay safe and self-isolate due to the Coronavirus outbreak. This has made many members of our community feel lonely and many also struggle to access supplies. We are a bunch of local volunteers that anyone affected by Coronavirus in Walkden and Little Hulton can reach out to. We can help with anything from grocery shopping to dropping off food, collecting and delivering prescriptions, cooking and delivering meals, walking dogs and more.... We check in on the elderly and vulnerable with regular friendly phone calls too. Gemma Fish & volunteer Paul
On a weekly basis, we prepare food parcels and deliver over 300 cooked meals to the families we support.
Donations of clothes, toys, games and books are collected and sorted. We even make adult and child wellbeing and welfare packs for those in need. Our safety and that of those we help is vital, so we use gloves or hand sanitiser and wear face masks, plus keep a safe distance during all our activities. Many people find us on social media and then refer their elderly and vulnerable family members, friends or neighbours to us. Anyone who needs help can reach out to us in different ways. RHS Garden Bridgewater
BLOOMS DURING LOCKDOWN
ver the past 3 years, the Royal Horticultural Society has been working to transform a 154 acre site in Salford, Greater Manchester, into a world-class garden - RHS Garden Bridgewater.
Bridgewater’s development, the largest gardening project in Europe, combines inspirational garden design and contemporary architecture within the backdrop of the site’s rich history, to create a spectacular Garden in the heart of the North West. Progress on site so far has been fantastic. By the beginning of the year, planting had begun in the magnificent 11 acre Weston Walled Garden, the historic lake repaired and ready to be filled, and the Garden’s infrastructure including a brand new Welcome Building was taking shape. Until recently, the site was a flurry of activity with hundreds of volunteers and contractors on hand to get RHS Garden Bridgewater ready for its planned opening in July. However, like everyone across the UK, at the end of March we suddenly found ourselves in very different circumstances. Due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19, we have taken the difficult decision to delay the opening of RHS Garden Bridgewater to May 2021. 18 ON OUR DOORSTEP
We have sadly had to send home our amazing volunteers for now, but a core team of horticultural staff has remained on site and, despite these challenging times, spirits are high. The Garden has burst into life: beautiful pops of colour form the likes of Camassia, Phlox, Magnolia and stunning Prunus specimens have given a new insight into how special RHS Garden Bridgewater will be when it opens next May. The focus for the horticultural team during this time has been weeding, mulching and watering to keep the plants on site in the best possible health. They have also had to tackle the staggering task of planting 25,000 plants across the Garden – from honeysuckle in the Wellbeing Garden and an array of lilies in the Chinese Streamside Garden, to the National Collection of Nerines in the Paradise Garden. Curator Marcus Chilton-Jones said: “Currently, the horticultural team are extremely busy planting up the last of the specimens scheduled to go in the ground this spring. Their collective attentions will then turn towards a variety of tasks including: sowing several areas of the garden with green manures to improve fertility, the herculean task of watering and CONTACT US ON 0161 790 2504

weeding the fledgling planting schemes and cultivating ground in readiness for the second wave of planting scheduled for this autumn.” When the time is right, we look forward to bringing back our volunteers and resuming Bridgewater’s innovative social prescribing programme, and community outreach and education activities. Until then, the team will work be working to keep the Garden looking beautiful and prepare it for opening in May 2021; we can’t wait to welcome you to RHS Garden Bridgewater then.

More than just a food service! Business Heroes: Hug in a Mug
A week after lockdown was first enforced, Karen and her team reopened Hug in a Mug coffee shop in Walkden and started a new takeaway service, but offering much more than just cooked food. They provide fresh hot meal delivery with a bag of groceries if required. If their clients need anything else, or errands running, they will do that too. They stop, chat and provide vital human contact, ensuring they are left in good spirits. “Being a community cafe, we were inspired by the huge need of our customers who were used to coming in every day and socialising, which was key to their mental health”. Karen also works closely with charity ‘Dancing with Dementia’. With grants from CVS and Forever
Manchester, they provide a FREE roast dinner, pudding and a bag of shopping every Saturday night. This supports 40 people each week for up to 8 weeks. Volunteer drivers deliver the food and have a chat. “The feedback and emotional response has been overwhelming for them and for us, it really does make a difference; I feel priviledged to be part of this. We are also making masks to give them confidence to venture out.” Hug in a Mug have a new website, designed free by one of their volunteers. Customers can order food and essential items like flour, pasta and more! The takeaway service doesn’t come close to generating enough income but Karen refuses to let her precious regulars down. “They need us just as much as we need them. We love this cafe and will continue to support them until they are able to sit in their favourite seats with their pals again.”
Raising over £1,600 for Atherton & Leigh Foodbank Louise Morrissey: Natural Nails
Louise Morrissey runs Natural Nails from her home in Ellenbrook so when lockdown hit, she had time on her hands to help others. Louise commented, “I had read somewhere that the foodbank were really struggling during this crisis. Firstly, because the donations weren’t coming in at the same rate as people aren’t visiting supermarkets as much. The second reason was that the demand for the foodbank vouchers grew due to loss of jobs.”

After 9 raffles, Louise had raised £450 with visions of making the 10th and final raffle extra special. She contacted many local businesses, well known shops and small independents, and was blown away by their generosity and community spirit.
Initially Louise joined forces with a group in Salford posting on social media that she would be happy to collect donations locally and deliver them to the foodbank – this turned out to be really successful delivering 30 bags full of food and essentials.
“I was secretly hoping this raffle would make £500. Amazingly the 10th raffle raised £1,203! I am super proud of this achievement BUT want to stress that it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of businesses and friends who donated prizes and everyone who bought tickets. I hope this article will raise awareness of how much foodbanks need help.”

Hi, I’m Shelley - a full time mum to my two young children & an Area Manager with The Body Shop at Home.
With the current pandemic, and when lockdown was announced, I really wanted to do something to help. I have lots of close friends who are Nurses whom I admire so much for going to work and putting themselves and their families at risk to keep us safe. One of these heroes is my best friend who, although previously medically retired, has gone back into nursing. They are all amazing! I decided to get my own customers involved and posted on my Facebook group Body Be beautiful by Shelley asking for pledges for hand creams. The response was outstanding! Commission on the sales has all gone back into buying more hand creams. In total we’ve been able to donate 270 hand creams,
45 hemp lip protectors amongst other items and my amazing Nurse friends, who took the pledges to their wards, each received a pamper bag of goodies from me. I currently have another pledge running - I’m hoping we can get that up to 60!! It’s been so humbling to be able to do this and to put a smile on people’s faces. None of this would have been possible without the support of my amazing customers. We stopped publishing for 7 weeks and instead worked full time trying to help the community residents and local businesses. #SaveSalfordWest Small businesses at the heart of our communities were forced to close during lockdown. To help them through the difficult and uncertain period, we set up this Community Raffle to encourage everyone in the area to support the local businesses that make our villages unique! A raffle with a difference - we used the ticket sales to BUY prizes from local businesses, which helped inject a little cash back into the local economy. Businesses received some much needed money, publicity, love and support at a difficult time. After 5 weeks of running #savesalfordwest we sold 647 tickets, gave out 13 prizes worth £50+ and 5 Bonus Prizes during the raffle. FROM SLEIGHS TO SATELLITES: WORSLEY ROTARY ‘ZOOMS’ IN FOR ALL! Words like ‘unmuted’ and ‘zoomed’ were uncommon when we pounded our streets with Santa in December 2019, gratefully receiving donations from our delighted residents. Now they are commonplace, although back then nobody had heard of Covid-19 and we were planning our ‘Dragons Den Event’ in May to distribute collected monies to local community causes. Of course since then, the whole world has stopped and like many other events our Dragons Den evening was cancelled. One word that has affected us all is ‘uncertainty’ and at Rotary in Worsley we wanted to restore ‘certainty’ and maintain activities by converting to regular online Zoom meetings and draw on the combined experiences of our traditional Rotary members and our newer ‘satellite’ group who meet fortnightly at The John Gilbert, rapidly expanding our numbers to 46 Rotary members from widely differing parts of our community, men and women alike. We identified social issues exacerbated as a result of Covid-19 including Domestic Violence/Abuse, Childhood Poverty, Food Shortages, Mental Health
and Homelessness. We utilised the funds raised by Santa’s Sleigh to support 20 very active Salford community groups including Salford Survivor Project, Launch Project, Visit from the Stork, Step into Action Walkden /Little Hulton, St Ann’s Hospice and many more. Collectively, we have distributed circa £9,000 along with donations of clothing, food and other items and have enabled all Rotary members to participate, whether able bodied and fully active or shielded for health reasons. We remain committed to supporting our community and while new words have emerged amid the uncertainty, we want to reassure all that the longstanding words of Rotary in Worsley remain associated with ‘certainty’ as we continue to be driven by our principle of ‘Service above Self’. LOCAL HEROES Celebrating Your
We asked for nominations for this speacial fertaure and local resident, Saquiba Constable, made two!
Abi Monks and Rob Hilton, Worsley Abi & Rob are both frontline workers at The Woodlands Hospital in Little Hulton, an older adult inpatient facility for those living with dementia or other mental illnesses. Abi is an Advanced Practitioner and Rob is an Assistant Practitioner. They have worked every single day tirelessly and selflessly with very little rest or days off, leaving their daughter in the care of their good friend and childminder, Saquiba. Abi and Rob were due to get married this July, but this is likely to be put on hold for now. Saquiba wants to celebrate their dedication, commitment and their willingness to risk their lives for others.
Syeda Choudhury, Worsley Saquiba’s mum, works as an Interpreter for the NHS and Police. At home, Syeda is also full time carer to her husband who suffers from Dementia. She doesn’t stop there; she cooks for her neighbours who are alone or ill too! An amazing and beautiful woman, definitely a hero to many in her community, going above and beyond to care for others. Saquiba also praises: Megha and Omi Vyas Naraayan, Claire Wright, Binoj and Nicola Nair, Sadia Jilani, Ruth Adamson. Lee -Anne Currie, her childminder and key worker friends!
Beth Wakefield, Worsley

Beth, opened The Wakey Bakery in 2018, and throughout the Lockdown she has made hundreds of cakes for frontline NHS staff and key workers, putting a smile on everyone’s face during this difficult time. Before Coronavirus, Beth had always given cakes to Salford Royal, care homes, the Ambulance Service and Fire service, whenever she had stock left, but never posted about it. When Lockdown came, Beth closed her bakery and put a post on Instagram to see who would like some cakes and was inundated with requests. She used the last of her stock to cheer those up those who needed it the most and since then she has made hundreds of cakes for all Emergency Service departments, but more importantly, NHS departments and front line staff across Salford, Manchester, Bolton, Oldham, Wigan and Preston. She has worked for hours, struggling to find stock but making them every chance she could. Wakey Bakery is now back in business and running an online shop a couple of days a week. In between Beth is still baking and donating cakes.

Supergirl Isla Reeves!

Since 16th March, 6yr old Isla Reeves and her family have been shielding due to her being in the high-risk category. Isla was diagnosed with Wilms Tumour (Kidney Cancer) in April last year and after having her kidney removed and undergoing chemotherapy she was given the all clear. Since Isla’s diagnosis she has been doing lots of events to raise money for a Salford based charity, Kidscan, who fund and manage research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer. Due to Covid-19 thousands of fundraising events have been cancelled. As the London Marathon was postponed the nation had been encouraged to complete a challenge using the numbers 2.6 or 26 and fundraise for their chosen charity.
Isla rose to the 2.6 challenge and on the 26th April set out to do as many laps as she could around Roe Green playpark in 26 minutes, changing into a different Disney Princess outfit for each lap. The local community cheered and clapped her on (socially distancing) and not only did she manage 12 laps in 12 different costumes but she actually ran/skipped her way round and raised a staggering £2,175 for Kidscan. Ann Wilmot, Boothstown
Super Woman at 77! Ann Wilmot has achieved something amazing and which many of us can only dream of!
Ann set herself the challenge to run the Manchester 10k and to raise funds for St Ann’s Hospice which was very close to her heart. With over £1,000 in sponsorship and ready to go, along came Covid-19 and the event was cancelled.
On 30th May 2020, Ann celebrated her 77th birthday by completing her first 10k run! Along the East Lancs, Ann’s route started at the top of Chaddock Lane in Boothstown, up to the Greyhound roundabout near Leigh and back again.
With all events such as these cancelled, Ann was aware of the huge drop in funds St Ann’s Hospice was receiving and was determined to accomplish what she had set out to do. On her birthday, with the support of her family, Jack and fellow members of the Salford Mets, she did it!
Over the past few years, Ann has been rebuilding her fitness at local gyms after a series of operations and illnesses. She had a personal trainer at the Marriott and was inspired there by Jack Carney, Head Coach at Salford Mets Athletics Club, who told her about the club at Cleavley Athletics Track and the health benefits of running. So, from December 2018, Ann started running at the track.
Ann felt good the day after and even went out for a walk! She’s not sure if she will run anther event but is looking forward to getting back to track when it reopens and to keep on running. Before retirement, Ann was a nurse for 45 years at the old Salford Royal (Hope Hospital) and out in the community. What a truly inspirational lady! ON OUR DOORSTEP 31

ALLOTMENTS IN LOCKDOWN
by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer All of us in the Cancer Support Group were disappointed at how dry the weather was early in the year and all our water butts were empty. We had to resort to using tap water for our seed planting, much against our principles and to be avoided whenever possible. However, Spring turned out quite well for the planting, but the pandemic disrupted everything else. We have had to exclude our volunteers from the site and we (my wife mostly) are having to do all the husbandry and Jackie is making a good carpenter, building new beds. We recycle everything we can and our old wheelbarrow is now a ‘wildflower bed’, courtesy of seeds from the RHS, similarly a rotten planter is now rebuilt and full of Lavender. To maintain ‘social distancing’, we fenced ourselves in, but we kept a Comfrey bed inside our fence and we’ll be making Comfrey Tea to Monty Don’s recipe in our spare time! Our carrots were being dug up by feral cats, so my wife acquired some old builder’s netting, cured
the problem and the carrots are doing nicely! We found an abandoned, derelict bench and realised it would clean up well; it now has pride of place at the entrance to the plot. Our shallots, red and white onions are enjoying the unusually clement weather and our potatoes, all three varieties, are coming on nicely, despite being a bit frostnipped. We have planted some varied currant and gooseberry bushes. We are amazed at how well they have done and how readily they have produced a bountiful crop! Sprouts are notorious for being attacked by Cabbage White Butterflies and their larvae, so Jackie devised a protective mesh tent to surround the plants. We’ll see how her invention fares in a few weeks! We have tried growing Padron peppers in the hope of having a ‘tapas’ crop for this summer. They, like our baby melons and patty pan squashes are new to us and experimental! Fingers crossed we may get lucky!

Allotment News... There is some good news about new allotments! Hilton Lane, Walkden Bellway have agreed a layout with the Council for this new site. Work can start once lockdown ends! Beechfield, Swinton Bellway paid for the remedial work and we are now discussing site plans with the Council. Poorlots, Irlam Chairman, Alan Cavanagh, won a lengthy battle to have a large area, mistakenly registered as ‘common land’, redesignated as Allotments - a huge result! Angel Lane, Little Hulton Discussions with the Council are underway to agree what and where the new allotments will be provided.
