When it comes to finding the perfect learning environment for your child, the team at Bridgewater School in Worsley believe that it is as much about instinct as academic success. Which is why all journeys at this family-focused school begin with a personal visit.
At this independent day school for children aged 3-18 years, success and happiness go hand in hand. At the heart of the school’s ethos lies the belief that every individual deserves a range of opportunities which will enable them to flourish, and visitors are invited to experience this holistic approach to education for themselves.
For parents interested in the benefits of a Bridgewater education, the school is holding an Open Day for all year groups on Saturday 8th November.
Besides enjoying the opportunity to speak to the Headteacher and Heads of Department, visitors are also able to discuss the many exciting possibilities open to their child with the school’s experienced and committed teaching staff. Families will be given a personal tour of the school’s unique woodland setting by a member of their student body, and find out more about the individualised support and teaching that they provide.
Visit bridgewater-school.co.uk/open-day-2025 to register and see just how far your child could go.

What started as a quiet idea shared over chats has blossomed into a thriving community initiative. Run by the community, RBGCA exists to bring people together, strengthen connections and nurture wellbeing across Roe Green, Beesley Green and nearby areas.
A full committee together with many volunteers are working together and planning for the future.
Susan Robinson, Chair of the association said: “Whether you have lived here for decades, or are newly settled, you’re welcome. We’re committed to creating an inclusive space where every voice matters. Throughout the year we will hold events from summer fetes and treasure hunts to quizzes
and picnics on the green. Events that will spark friendship, joy and special memories. We care for local spaces and we will work together to preserve their charm.”
“We are thankful to Roe Green Cricket Club for allowing us to host our meetings in the club house and for opening their doors every Friday morning 10am-12 noon to serve coffee, tea and cake to enable chats, laughter and friendships to develop. Everyone is welcome. It’s a simple tradition that is becoming a firm favourite”.

Did you know Salford Local History Library hold a collection of some 70,000 images of the City? Many of these you will have seen in books, TV shows, post cards and used in various promotions for the library and museum. Comprised of four collections that would have been originally collected at branch libraries around the City, including: Eccles, Swinton and Worsley, these images were all brought together and housed at the local history library. The best way of seeing them all is to make an appointment at the library and to come and browse through. However, some 30,000 of them have been digitised and can be viewed remotely.
Originally funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the Digital Salford project started over ten years ago. The initial project ran for two years, with a project manager and some twenty volunteers scanning almost 9,000 images. There was a series of talks at libraries where people could tell us what images mattered the most to them, and if we had it we would scan it. However, after the project came to an end, we still had the equipment and many of the volunteers wanted to continue, so we carried on. Now fast forward ten years later and despite some set backs (Covid lockdowns, technical issues) we have almost half of the collection completed. We have had almost fifty volunteers working on the scanning (with some of the original volunteers still scanning!)
Using the database is easy. Go to our website at photos.salfordmuseum.com and search in the
keyword search field in the top right corner. The kind of thing you can search for can be specific, depending on the streets and places you grew up, such as: Ellor Street, Cross Lane, Regent Road; but many general searches will work as well, like: Pubs, schools, whit walks, etc. Many people search for the School they went to, or the places they used to hang out – and if you don’t know what to look for, have a look in one of our selections in the ‘Browse’ Section. If the image you are looking for isn’t there, it’s possible we haven’t scanned it yet. Please feel free to pop in and let us know in the library.

This isn’t just giving. It’s making something happen. Let’s bring these ideas to life - together.
While writing a will may feel like a conversation many of us don’t want to broach, where your dependents are concerned it could be one of the most important documents you put your name to.
We’re all busy thinking about what’s next - booking holidays, finishing the bathroom, deciding what’s for tea. Yet for something so certain, the idea of planning for our own death is a thing many of us still avoid.
In reality, writing a will is one of the most important ways to take care of those closest to us. It’s not just about who gets what – it’s about making sure your wishes are honoured, your children are protected, and your finances are handled properly.
The pandemic reminded us just how unpredictable life can be, and making a will remains one of the most straightforward steps toward peace of mind. It doesn’t even require a stiff solicitor’s office – these days, you can get the job done over Zoom, with someone who’s more likely to be in a hoodie than a three-piece suit.
As well as a will, there’s also Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) to consider – this is a legal document giving someone you trust the right to make decisions if you’re no longer able to. Many assume a spouse can automatically take charge in such circumstances, but that’s not the case. Assigning LPA is a simple, affordable way to take pressure off your loved ones during difficult times.
If you don’t have a will, or plans in place, you’re relying on something called the laws of intestacy. That means the government decides where your assets go, and unmarried partners have no legal claim, no matter how long the relationship. Even for married couples, the rules can be surprisingthe first £270,000 of an estate goes to the spouse, then the rest is divided, potentially leaving others short-changed.
Shockingly, around two-thirds of UK adults still die without a will in place. That’s a lot of families left to untangle legal red tape - and sometimes, the wrong people end up inheriting.
It’s important to act on this, because while the basics of estate planning haven’t changed, upcoming adjustments to inheritance tax mean uncertainty going forward. For instance, from 2026, the government will cap certain reliefs that once helped shield larger estates from higher tax bills. Also, the rules around gifting and how pensions are taxed after death are also under review – so if your plans rely on old assumptions, it may be time for a fresh look.
Ultimately, writing a will isn’t about doom and gloom. It’s about making things easier for the people you love, and protecting everything you’ve worked hard for. And in terms of cost, it’s probably a lot less than you assume, with service achievable from a couple of hundred pounds.

Having worked in the beauty industry for over 26 years, I have invested a lot of time learning about the skin, how the skin works and the factors that make significant changes to the skin… but what I have noticed over the years is that these facts and theories don’t work for everyone. It’s not one size suits all when it comes to skin care.
help so much more than using a cosmetic brand product that simply sits on the skin.
We are all different! It’s as simple as that; our genetics, health, lifestyle, diet and those dam pesky hormones! Not only are we all built differently, but our bodies react differently from one person to the next - no one regime or plan will work the same for everyone. Puberty, pregnancy, menopause, health conditions and medication also have a huge impact on our skin. The skin is our biggest organ and we need to look after it! So what can we do?
Firstly, I recommend a skin consultation. We carry out thorough skin consultations involving a detailed questionnaire and a skin scan. The skin scan shows deeper layers of skin and we can see under the surface layers to monitor sebaceous activity, vascular lesions, sun damage, pigmentation, dehydration and deeper lines and wrinkles. Then looking at skincare, diet, lifestyle and supplementation, we recommend personalised treatments and products for you.
When it comes to homecare, start with the basics; thorough cleansing, feeding (supplement, serums and moisturisers) and protecting (UVA and UVB sunscreens).
The PH of cleansers vary. Anything that is alkaline will disrupt and breakdown the acid mantle (the skins natural protective barrier) causing loss of water, increased sebum production, greater skin sensitivity, and higher risk of sun damage. Alkaline products also disrupt the skins microbiome which can increase the risk of acne, rosacea and skin sensitivity making it more susceptible to extrinsic damage. When it comes to feeding the skin we need a good moisturiser. This will differ from one person to the next but choosing a cosmeceutical or clinical grade product that works on different levels of the skin will
A good moisturiser containing active ingredients is a great start. Vitamin A is a core skincare ingredient and has been used for many years in various skincare products. But don’t forget that not all forms of vitamin A are the same.
Then comes protection; full spectrum, UVA & UVB protection should be used 365 days a year!
We have two high quality cosmeceutical ranges of skincare.
Environ treatments include the iconic Ionzyme Electrical Facial, Collagen Induction Therapy (micro-needling) and a variety of cool peels. We are also authorised stockists of Dermalogica skincare, a multi level skincare range, a good starting point for beginners.
We offer treatments for every skin type and condition; as well as peels and facials, we offer IPL, micro-current, RF (radio frequency) microdermabrasion, high frequency, ultra sound, nano needling, galvanic treatments and a range of injectable skin boosters.
Consultations £35 (redeemable against products or treatments) or FREE WHEN YOU MENTION “On Our Doorstep”.

When people think about planning for the future, they often focus on making a Will - but far fewer consider what would happen if they lost the ability to manage their affairs while still alive.
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you're ever unable to do so yourself. It’s a vital part of future planning that can offer real peace of mind - not just for you, but also for your loved ones.
There are two types of LPA:
Property and Financial Affairs LPA - this allows your chosen attorney to manage things like bank accounts, bills, benefits, pensions, investments, and even selling a property.
Health and Welfare LPA - this covers personal matters such as your care, medical treatment, day-to-day routines, and where you live. It only takes effect if you lose mental capacity.
Without an LPA in place, your family or friends would need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your deputy - a process that can be time consuming, expensive and emotionally draining, particularly in an emergency situation.
Having an LPA doesn't mean handing over control
right away. You choose who acts for you and decide when they can begin doing so. You remain in control for as long as you are able to make your own decisions.
Putting an LPA in place while you are fit and well is one of the most responsible steps you can take. It means your wishes can be respected and acted upon, and those closest to you won't face unnecessary hurdles at what may already be a distressing time.
At Widdows Pilling LLP, we regularly advise individuals, couples, and families on setting up LPAs. Whether you are planning ahead yourself, supporting an elderly relative, or helping someone with a long-term condition, we’ll take you through the process step by step.
We pride ourselves on offering friendly, accessible advice with no jargon. We can also act as certificate providers to confirm your capacity and understanding, and we’ll handle the registration process with the Office of the Public Guardian from start to finish.
It’s never too early to plan ahead. But it can be too late.

September is a busy month in the garden as you harvest crops, prune and divide, and prepare for autumn and beyond.
Because the month of September is a transitional month for the weather and the seasons, it is a busy month for gardeners, especially as they harvest the fruits of their labours.
Summer fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, courgettes, and runner beans are still going strong this month gracing our tables and making us think of different ways of preserving our bounty. Whilst beans do freeze well, tomatoes do not unless you make sauces so consider more traditional methods of preserving such as picking or bottling.
Blackberries and plums should still be cropping whilst autumn fruiting raspberries are coming into their own. Squashes are just starting to crop, but until they are picked ensure larger fruits are kept well clear of the ground with straw.
Take cuttings - September is the perfect month to take cuttings from plants such as fuchsias and hebe because hormone levels are high and this will encourage them to take.
Herbaceous perennials such as geums divide easily. Geums come in a huge variety of colours and are a really great value plant as you can divide them and get more and more. Simply lift the plant out of the ground and it should divide up quite readily. You
could easily get six smaller plants from one large one. Geums grow tall so add a brilliant extra dimension to the border.
Harvesting seeds from flowering plants can save you money and is hugely satisfying. Sunflowers are perhaps one of the easiest flowers to gather seeds from as the seeds and heads are so big. Simply wait until the head dries and then cut it off, hang it upside down and shake, or rub the head until the seeds come out.
September is a good month to lay a new lawn as the soil is still warm and there is usually enough rain to allow it to grow. Create a new lawn by either using seed or buying turf. Using seed is the cheaper option but you will need patience, and it is best to start early in the month unless the weather is very hot and dry. Turf offers a quicker result, but it can be hard physical work and possibly the job for a professional. Both seed and turf come in numerous choices that include popular wildflower lawns.
Weeds are still growing vigorously in gardens so tackle them regularly. Depending on the weather slugs and snails could still be abundant too so be watchful. To make sure your beautiful pots and hanging baskets continue flowering until the first frosts dead head them and water regularly. Ponds need to be netted to stop leaves falling in and clean and tidy greenhouses and cold frames in readiness for autumn use.
Planning your dream conservatory - it’s a project you can put off for years, but creating a conservatory in your home can be a worthy investment. Not only can it potentially add value to your home, it also offers an alternative space to relax in, enabling you to feel closer to nature whilst still staying cosy.
smaller spaces.
Finally, if you really want to be fancy, consider an orangery - a luxurious alternative with brick pillars and a solid roof, making it more of a permanent room than a glass structure.
Before anything else, it is crucial to identify the primary purpose of your new building project. Will the conservatory be used as a living space, dining area, home office or playroom? Do you want it to serve as a greenhouse for plants? And how much space do you realistically have to play with?
It’s an expensive project, so well worth doing your research to ensure your expectations are realistic and within your space, time and money constraints.
There are several different conservatory styles to choose from, and it’s important that your choice not only adheres to your aesthetic desires, but also fits into the look and feel of your home, garden and neighbourhood.
For instance, characterised by ornate details and rounded bay windows, the Victorian conservatory is a more traditional option. It is elegant, beautiful and a fabulous environment for afternoon teas!
Alternatively, the Edwardian style provides more usable space. Its clean lines and elegant simplicity make it more versatile and modern for those who find the former option too old-fashioned.
In the UK, conservatories do not require planning permission as long as certain conditions are met. They must be built at ground level, single storey and have less than 30 square metres in floor area.
It needs to be separated from the house by external quality walls, doors or windows and there should be an independent heating system with separate temperature and on/off controls.
Finally, the glazing and any fixed electrical installations must comply with the applicable building regulations requirements.
The cost of building a conservatory varies depending on its size, materials and complexity, so don’t start the project unless you know you can see it through.
Finally, while some may opt for a DIY approach, hiring experienced professionals ensures a higher-quality build. Look for contractors with good reviews and references, experience in designing and constructing conservatories and knowledge of local regulations and climate considerations.

A fresh and light meal, ideal for these summer months, made with juicy, tender, baked salmon and topped with creamy spinach and mushrooms.
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 2
Ingredients
n 2 large salmon fillets with the skin on
n 1 small onion, finely diced
n 1 tbsp olive oil
n 3 large garlic cloves crushed or finely chopped
n 120g fresh spinach
n 150g mushrooms slicedany type but wild are great
n 60ml cup white wine
170ml double cream
Method
Preheat the oven to 220C / 200 fan / Gas mark 7 and line a small, rimmed baking sheet with greaseproof paper.
Rub the salmon fillets with oil and place them skin side down on the greaseproof paper.
Season the fillets well with salt and pepper. Place the salmon into the oven for 18-25 minutes. Cooking time will depend on the size and thickness of the salmon fillets used.
While salmon is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Fry the onion gently until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and mushrooms and cook for another minute, then add the spinach. Cover and let the spinach cook down, stirring occasionally.
Once spinach has wilted, drain off the excess liquid. Return to the stove and add white wine. Simmer for about a minute.
Remove from the heat, add the cream, and mix everything well. Season with salt and chilli flakes. Return to a low heat and allow to heat through for a couple of minutes.
When the salmon is cooked, remove it from the oven and place it on preheated plates.
Pour the creamy spinach and mushroom mixture over the salmon. Serve with a green salad.
