Salford

What if there was one easy-to-use website that instantly shows the best routes for walking, running and cycling in Salford? That’s what Slow Ways, a UK-wide volunteer project, is building.

Slow Ways has already mapped nearly 90,000 miles of routes across Britain. Its next step is to bring that effort to Salford and local communities across the region, creating a hub packed with family strolls, accessible paths, scenic bike rides and more. Schools, charities and community groups will be enabled to share great special-interest routes for their communities and Salford as a whole.

“Active travel boosts health, saves money and cuts our environmental footprint,” says founder Dan

Raven-Ellison, a former geography teacher. “With community support we can make it simpler and more fun to explore Salford by foot or wheel.”

Slow Ways, a non-profit Community Interest Company, is crowdfunding to make this happen.

You can back the project by:

n Making a donation and getting great rewards in return.

n Sponsoring a local organisation to share their routes.

n Funding the rollout to an entire community.

The crowdfunding campaign runs through June and July 2025. Learn more, or contribute, at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/slowways

Probate is often seen as a necessary step after someone dies, but not every estate needs it. Many people rush into the process without checking whether it’s actually required. Before applying for probate, ask yourself these five key questions to determine if it’s necessary.

1. Did the Deceased Own Property in Their Sole Name?

Yes → Probate is likely required.

No → If the property was owned jointly, it usually passes automatically to the surviving owner without probate.

The biggest factor in whether probate is needed is how property is owned. If the deceased was the sole owner, their estate must go through probate before it can be transferred or sold. However, if the property was jointly owned as ‘joint tenants’, it passes automatically to the surviving co-owner.

2. Do Banks Require Probate to Release Funds?

Yes → You will need probate to access the money. No → Some banks release smaller sums without probate.

Banks and financial institutions have their own rules on when probate is required. Many allow accounts under £5,000–£50,000 to be closed with just a death certificate, but larger amounts often require a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.

3. Is the Estate Over the Inheritance Tax Threshold?

Yes → Probate is likely required, and inheritance tax may be payable.

No → If the estate is under £325,000, probate may not be needed.

Estates worth over £325,000 (or £650,000 for married couples) may need probate to pay inheritance tax

Do I Even Need Probate? 5 Questions to Ask Before You Start

before assets can be distributed. If an estate is under this threshold and straightforward, probate might not be necessary.

4. Are There Multiple Beneficiaries or Disputes?

Yes → Probate is advisable to ensure assets are distributed legally.

No → If only one person is inheriting everything, probate may not be required.

When multiple people are entitled to inherit, probate ensures everything is distributed correctly. If there are disputes over a Will or who should inherit, probate provides legal clarity and prevents challenges later.

5. Did the Deceased Have Foreign Assets or Investments?

Yes → Probate (or an equivalent process abroad) may be required.

No → UK-based estates are easier to administer. If the deceased owned property or financial assets overseas, you may need to go through two probate processes - one in the UK and another in the relevant country. Rules vary depending on where the assets are located.

The Verdict: Do You Need Probate?

If you answered “Yes” to most of these questions, probate is likely required. If you’re unsure, seeking professional advice can help avoid delays and unnecessary costs.

If you need help determining whether probate is necessary, Widdows Pilling can assess your situation and guide you through the process.

Next time you visit St. Mark’s Church in Worsley, spend just a short time looking at the large mosaic Reredos, behind the altar, and focus your gaze upon the central figure of Christ as Salvator Mundi (or Saviour of the World). The Reredos in St. Mark’s is 21 feet long and its maximum height is 10ft 9ins, which is big. There are several aspects of this which make it special and worthy of attention.

Firstly, its origin. It is widely accepted that it was the design of George Gilbert Scott (architect of the church) and the work of Clayton and Bell, using coloured and gold mosaics made by Salviati & Co. of Italy. There have been many paintings of Salvator Mundi over the ages, from ancient Byzantine churches to the masters of the Renaissance, but rarely does one see a mosaic.

Secondly, note the intricate design and fine detail of the arched surround. Scott became Surveyor of the Fabric at Westminster Abbey in 1849 (until his death in 1878). He would have become familiar with

SALVATOR MUNDI

the medieval Retable (measuring 11ft by 3ft) at the Abbey which was resurrected in the early 19th century. The side pillars and arched surround on both are identical to panels on that screen.

And thirdly, the figure of Christ Himself is extremely similar to the portrait of the same name which has acquired a great deal of interest and attention in the art world within the past decade or so, which some scholars believe to be the work of Leonardo da Vinci. It is currently the world’s most expensive oil painting and is believed to be in the possession of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, awaiting a special gallery to be built to show it. The way in which Christ is holding the fingers of His right hand in the blessing is redolent of the portrait, as is the fact that He is holding a crystal globe representing the earth in His left hand. In pre-Renaissance portraits, the globe often shows plant and animal life in other depictions, or landscapes.

One outstanding feature of the full Reredos is the extensive use of gold tesserae, small individual tiles, usually formed in the shape of a square, and used in creating a mosaic. At the time of the Byzantine Empire and in the early centuries of Christianity, gold was frequently used to symbolise transcendent, divine light embodying the invisible, spiritual world. Gold (or ‘gold ground’) could be found in the background of icons, mosaics, triptych panels and architectural settings. By the time of the Renaissance, a blue sky or a pastoral scene became more popular.

Residents of Swinton’s Houghton Lane, Swinton have come together to deliver an incredible community project to support threatened migratory birds.

Every summer, like many other streets up and down the country, Houghton Lane plays host to some of the thousands of Swifts who arrive in the UK having flown 3,400 miles to reach the UK from East Africa every year, crossing 25 countries over the course of 4 weeks in their journey to reach us. Swifts spend most of their time in the air – feeding, sleeping and even mating all whilst in flight! - only landing to nest, which is where Suzanne and her neighbours come in....

Suzanne first began to appreciate the distinctive screaming calls of Swifts zooming overhead when the world fell silent during the COVID lockdown. Through her community’s Whatsapp group she soon discovered they were migratory Swifts, a species increasingly under threat from a loss in nesting sites. Swifts return to the exact same nesting spot year on year, but increasingly these nesting sites have been hit by property renovations and the removal of old buildings. This has contributed to a 62% decline in Swift numbers recorded between 1995 and 2020, with the species also added to the UK’s Red List of Birds, meaning it’s amongst our most endangered.

Eager to take positive action to help these visiting birds each summer, Suzanne discovered that a nearby street had established its own Swift colony with the support of the RSPB, and connected with local RSPB Community Engagement Officer, Roshni Parmar-Hill, to put similar plans in motion for Houghton Lane. Following a Whatsapp call-out to rally the involvement of her neighbours, over 40 households responded who were eager to have Swift nesting boxes erected on their houses.

A Community Project to Save Swifts in Swinton

Thanks to generous funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, over 80 boxes have been made by students at Salford’s Growth Company Education and Skills College, and installed along Houghton Lane, providing Swifts with vital nesting sites. Truly a community effort, the boxes were also readied by the local Brownie pack that Suzanne leads, with the children giving their time to carefully paint and weatherproof them before installation.

This project to establish Houghton Lane as a new ‘Swift Street’ builds on wider ongoing work to develop Manchester into a ‘Swift City’, supported by the expansion of the RSPB’s network of ‘Swift Champions’ who lead across the development of nesting sites at scale, manufacturing swift boxes and raising people’s awareness and engagement through walks, talks and workshops.

Meanwhile another Swinton resident, Haldis, created a Swift Street in Charles Street. With the support of her neighbours, 22 Swift boxes are now in place.

If you feel inspired to bring your own community together in support of Swifts, then head to Saving Swifts with the Species Volunteer Network on our website for more information on all things Swift, including Swift Champions, nest boxes and the Swift Mapper app.

Exciting News for Salford Residents: Free Tuesday Entry to RHS Garden Bridgewater Extended to 2026

Salford residents can continue to enjoy free entry to RHS Garden Bridgewater every Tuesday, as the RHS celebrates its fourth anniversary by extending the scheme until May 2026.

Since opening in May 2021, RHS Bridgewater has welcomed over 118,000 Salford residents to explore the beautiful 154-acre garden as part of the free entry scheme.

Every visit to RHS Garden Bridgewater supports vital community programmes, which aim to broaden access to the positive benefits of gardening and spending time outdoors. In 2024, nearly 12,000 local schoolchildren also benefited from the garden’s free education workshops and resources. As the UK’s largest gardening charity, the RHS is committed to sharing the joy of gardening with as many people as possible. People who receive a range of income support benefits can visit all RHS Gardens for just £1 per visit all year round.

Liz Thwaite, Head of RHS Bridgewater, says: “RHS Bridgewater is proud to provide local organisations with space to grow, particularly in our Community Grow and Community Wellbeing Gardens, and through the extensive outreach work of our team across the region. There are many exciting new garden developments to look forward to, including the new Elemental Borders, the Green Skills Garden, and the Chinese Streamside Scholar’s Garden, where work will begin this year, ready for a grand opening in late 2026.

“I am delighted that so many of Salford's residents

have taken advantage of our free entry days since we opened. The enthusiastic reception from our local community has been truly uplifting, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming even more residents to enjoy free visits on Tuesdays in the year ahead.”

Paul Dennett, Salford City Mayor, expressed his enthusiasm for the extension, saying:

"RHS Garden Bridgewater has become a cherished asset for our residents, families and communities, and I'm thrilled that the Free Tuesday initiative will continue for another year.

This extension reaffirms our commitment to providing access to green spaces for all Salford residents, while also being a national treasure for horticulturalists, botanists and garden lovers across the UK, as Royal Horticultural Society's fifth garden. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to explore and enjoy the beauty of the garden.

The garden offers vital green space for families, schools, and community groups, inspiring a love for nature, horticulture and gardening. It also contributes to tackling climate change by enhancing local biodiversity and providing a natural sanctuary for wildlife.

Keeping it open and accessible to our residents is a real priority and I’m delighted we can continue this fantastic initiative for another year."

ECCLES COLLEGE ANIMAL PARK

Nestled in the leafy suburbs of Salford, Eccles College Animal Park is an up-and-coming nature-forward destination in the centre of the community. An easy to reach destination in the city with a developing focus on supporting our native British rare-breeds. With 500+ Individual animals consisting of a range of taxa (Animal species groups) from striped skunks to a White-naped Crane, Common Marmosets to Bennetts wallaby, Argentine Tegu to Clownfish (think Nemo!), Huacaya Alpaca, Capybara and a Bamboo Rat snake on the wilder side! The Animal Park is focused on reviewing their collection to support the wider context of the student’s animal qualifications; to this end they also have a range of native species and breeds including Soay Sheep, the British barn owl, British Toggenburg Milk Goats, Shetland Ponies, and have this year bred the “at risk” Portland Sheep leading to 2 wonderful lambs, Amber and Arlo. Amber, as a female, is one of around only 400 Portland ewes in the UK. In terms of an animal a bit closer to home, we have 5 different breeds of rabbits!

The animals at the college are here to support the next generation of zoological professions. Courses are offered for school leavers (16+) at a range of levels to suit the differing profile of students in the city. Students may wish to start at a Level 1 Animal Care course and re-sit their Maths and English GCSE’s if needed (the government requirement is grade 4). Alternatively, the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care is for learners that have just missed the passing grades of a 4 across their GCSE’s. Others may wish to begin on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management, which is the equivalent to

3 A levels and allows them to progress to university. Students that are equine focused can also study at varying levels at our linked centre at Ryders Farm Equestrian Centre.

The college is also committed to teaching and developing life skills ie. punctuality, working with others and independently, problem solving and developing resilience to help them to thrive in their future careers.

Eccles College Animal Park is looking at interacting with the local community of Salford, Greater Manchester and beyond, and to this end would love you to follow our new facebook page (link below) for exciting new updates and events.

If you would like to visit the college’s animal collection, come to the Eccles Country Fair on Saturday 5th July, a family fun day with a range of local stalls, live music and food as well as a great opportunity to speak to staff!

Gardening at the height of summer

Whilst summer is the perfect time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour in the garden, it can also be a time when possible extreme heat and drought can wreak havoc, but there is plenty you can do to deal with everything the hot summer months can throw at you.

Watering

When it’s hot and dry, watering is really importantnot just the amount but when and how you water.

Deep watering can help plants. This is where you water less frequently but more thoroughly and this encourages deep root growth, which is especially useful during dry spells, as the deeper down the roots grow the better plants can deal successfully with dry conditions.

Morning or evening watering is not only best for you the gardener, as you won’t be exposed to the high temperatures or summer sun, but also for your plants as there is less evaporation. So, water very early or as the sun goes down.

Irrigation, an irrigation system might not be something you can set up at the height of summer but could be a project you plan to have installed, either by yourself or professionally, in autumn or next spring. Irrigation helps water get to where it needs with minimal evaporation. Irrigation systems also water your garden when you are away and could prove a great investment.

Collect rainwater to make the best use of those thundery summer downpours. Set up water butts to collect rainwater and reduce your metered water use.

Front and back of your house, garage and even sheds could house water collection systems.

Mulching

With water in short supply, reducing evaporation through mulching is a good thing; it is easy to do and also has the added bonus of suppressing weed growth.

There are various mulches you can use which include shredded bark, wood chips or straw. You could even create your own home-made mulch by using the grass cuttings from your lawn and applying it in a deep layer. All organic mulches will require topping up and even though they suppress weeds to a large extent, regular weeding will ensure your plants are not crowded out by unwanted guests.

Other summer jobs

Greenhouses and cloches can get extremely hot in summer, so maximise ventilation and cover sun exposed glass with thick cardboard or old carpet to block the sun. There are also products you can buy to do this.

In the height of the summer consider mowing a little less as keeping your grass longer will protect your lawn from the heat and sun.

Ponds can lose a lot of water in a drought, so check the level regularly and top up if required.

After all this, choose a nice shady spot to sit in and enjoy the wonderful summer months!

Just like us, pets need a whole new grooming regime for summer. Here are some vital steps you can take to improve the warmer months for them, making the sunny season as glorious for them as it is for us!

Coat

If you have a no-moult breed of dog (eg. a Shih Tzu or Poodle), you’ll already be know the process of getting regular grooms to keep everything clean and tidy.

Yet in the summer, most furry pets will require a little extra care, so invest in a good brush from your local pet shop to keep coats silky and knot free. Whether you have a canine, feline or rabbit, regular care with both a flea comb and spot-on or oral treatment, along with checks for ticks, are super important in warm weather.

Paws

Keeping claws trimmed is essential in any season, but if a nail grows into the skin in summer, when infections are more likely (with more time outdoors and higher temperatures), your pet could be in real trouble.

Buy some clippers if you feel confident doing it, or visit your vet for a quick trim. This is especially important in anxious pets as it’s easy to cut them if they won’t sit still.

While you’re maintaining paws, look out for grass seeds which get embedded, causing all kind of chaos.

Face

When the weather gets warmer, clear eyes and ears in dogs are essential. Fur around or inside can cause havoc, leading to infection and general icky, stickiness.

Trim hair around eyes with specialised scissors that have curved ends, or see a groomer who can do it for you. Gently wipe eye gunk regularly and use a cotton ball with warm water to gently clean inside the ear (but never a cotton bud!).

If there are any peculiar smells or discharge a visit to the vet may be your best bet.

Insides

Oral flea, tick, lungworm and tapeworm treatments are vital all year round, but especially in summer months. Not only do pests and viruses such as these thrive in humid weather, they’re also easier for pets to pick up. For example, that dubious looking puddle that your pup just drank from, or a discarded festival hot dog all have potential to make even the hardiest hound feel ruff. Some pet foods now include probiotics which offer an extra level of tummy protection.

As with most things pet-wise, you, as owner, will know the signs best, so be sure to act on them.

Strawberry Hazelnut Shortbreads

Ingredients

For the hazelnut shortbread:

• 110g hazelnuts

• 150g softened butter

• 60g unrefined golden icing sugar, plus extra to serve

• 60g rice flour, sifted (or use dried semolina)

• 150g plain flour, sifted, plus a little extra for rolling out

For the strawberry purée:

• 225g fresh strawberries, hulled

• 1 level tablespoon golden caster sugar

For the strawberry filling:

• 450g fresh strawberries, hulled, reserving 8 for decoration

• 200ml crème fraîche

• 150ml fresh custard

• 2 drops vanilla extract

Method

Toast the hazelnuts by spreading them out on a baking tray and placing them in the oven for 5 minutes.

When cool, grind them to a sand-like consistency in a blender, or chop finely, pop them in a polyethene bag and crush them as finely as possible with a rolling pin.

Cream the butter and icing sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy, then gradually beat in the flours or semolina, followed by the ground hazelnuts.

Bring the mixture together to make a dough. Place this in a polythene food bag and leave it in the fridge to rest for about 30 minutes. Then roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 5mm thick.

Use a 9 cm cutter to make 16 rounds of shortbread dough.

Arrange the biscuits on the baking trays and lightly prick each one with a fork. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove them from the oven and leave to cool on the trays for 10 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Place the puree fruit in a bowl, sprinkle them with the sugar and leave for 30 minutes. After that, purée them in the food processor, then press them through a nylon sieve to remove the seeds. Cover and set aside.

Whisk the crème fraîche in a mixing bowl with an electric hand whisk until it becomes stiff, then add the custard and vanilla extract and whisk again until thick.

Cover the mixture and chill until just before serving. Reserve 8 strawberries for decoration. Roughly chop or slice the remainder. Spread equal quantities of the cream mixture over the biscuits, then arrange the strawberry pieces on top of eight. Spoon some purée over each one, then sandwich with the remaining cream-covered rounds.

Now place a reserved strawberry on top of each one and finish off with a light dusting of icing sugar.
