Museum of Contemporary Photography (Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea)
The project works with two clients at the same time: Municipality 9 which was looking for proposals for a semi-disused area of the former Bassi Hospital, and the representation of the Museum of Contemporary Photography which was part of the initiative to hypothesize a transfer to the area project from Cinisello Balsamo.
The project includes both commissions, first, it went to redevelop and give use to existing buildings, maintained for their historical value; while to strengthen the system we worked on building the new one, also for the large surfaces required by the MuFoCo Museum.
The two systems work following different positions, everything new takes a different alignment, which comes from the morphological and historical analysis of the area. Working with the existing walkway, which takes on various functions including public space, outdoor exhibition area, and connection between buildings, further creates a barrier that closes the park from the rest of the city, giving a clear hierarchy of spaces.
The Tower was born from the idea of being sustainable in economic terms for the public client
which is the Museum of Contemporary Photography. The dimensions of the building are closely linked to its positioning in the project area, the interior of the area remains closed while the exterior is left in autonomous function, creating a connection between the spaces which strongly influences the final shape.
The character of the building is given by the search to create versatile spaces and closed environments, for the large archive, permanent and temporary exhibitions, multifunctional spaces, and other commissioned accessory functions. The result of a Tower partly closed in its vertical development in connection with large closed environments repeated in the number of levels, and on the other, the building is transparent throughout the serving area and with a high-tech character, for the lifts and emergency stairs placed outside

The project is the result of a long analysis of the area and involves the construction of a residential building in Corso di Porta Vigentina in Milan.
Inside are distributed:
- a ground floor with an entrance, a housing unit relating to the caretaker, and an office unit;
- a mezzanine located between the ground floor and the floors used as a residence, which can be accessed from the main staircase or even directly from the office unit on the ground floor;
- 8 floors used as a residence with 2 or 3 residential units per floor, with a total of 20 residential units.
The project required creating a thoughtful assembly starting from a reference building, which in this case is that of Mario Asnago and Claudio Vender via Andrea Verga 4 in Milan.
The building follows the orientation by aligning itself with Corso di Porta Vigentina, which is a reference point for the urban development of the surrounding buildings, while the layout it adopts in the project area divides the space by recreating courtyards around it.
The project concerning the city
To learn more about the project, it is necessary to understand the city, and its alignments and predict its future development while keeping the past in mind. We need to interpret the classic language of the city in a contemporary key, projecting the project toward the future.
The different heights of the two buildings present in the project attempt to dialogue with the place, in the lower part the height of the building integrates with the adjacent one, while the higher body has the intention of developing the project towards a new dialogue like new nearby buildings. The difference in height in the project describes the building, representing a bridge between what existed and what will exist, making these two aspects coexist in a single project. Project in harmony with the city, alignment, and measurement. Space, relationships between built volumes, proportion. Characteristic is the folding, the sculptural effect of a monolithic volume.
Design of the facade, with the window meeting and the rhythm/step that unifies and characterizes the building. The Vigentina Tower is part of the cultural current of the Milanese school.

Viale Tunisia, Milano, Italia
The project of a hybrid building, with the design theme «Dense Section».
It is built step by step, simultaneously developing themes such as: Urban Approach, the building in the city, and its vision and interpretation.
Program and Circulation, from the analysis of the city. Structure/Construction, goes together with the idea of a functional program, and circulation, controlling Light and Scale.
And finally, the Skin (the idea of a Façade), which must be conceived, building it in connection with the structure.
An urban tower in all respects, develops in height concerning the existing context, with the design in relation to the neighboring buildings.
The program is the result of the analysis of the specific area in which it is located, in particular Viale Tunisia which cuts perpendicularly to Corso Buenos Aires, the main street of commerce and consumption in Milan. The public destination project is contrasted with a cultural function, to bridge the gap.
The main ideas from which side are expressed in the following quotations:
«Architecture is the will of an epoch translated into space.
«Architecture depends on its time. It is the crystallization of its inner structure, the slow unfolding of its form» by Mies Van der Rohe
Urban planning after growth... situations of contraction...
«Without consuming land, recompose the urbanized area through volumetric redevelopment.»
«The regulation of urban metabolism... by Arturo Lanzani
In line with the urban planning ideas developed by Lanzani, and from great sources such as Milanese Modernism in height, and the authority of Professor Donaire, who imposed STRUCTURE as a theme most evoked during the course. The Culture Tower creates unity between technique and culture.

Between the history and the future of Piscina Romano

PONTE ROMANO
Between the history and the future of Piscina Romano “Piscina Romano” was constructed in 1929, the project was from the Eng. L. Secchi; the original design has been subjected to several changes, today the only elements that persist are the entrance building and the two little pavilions in the west part of the site. The area has some critical elements such as the use of the open-air swimming pool which is exploitable only for three months per year and the general decline of the greenery and the structures. The project’s purpose is to renovate the area keeping the historic memory, adding some new functions that can be useful to the neighborhood and the students of Politecnico, which is adjacent to the site. The aim is reached with graftings that create a dialogue between the existences and the new volumes: the biggest building is placed in the center of the area and has a strong presence with its impressive steel structure, it defines two different areas that are separated concerning function but connected through the main grafting; both spaces are served by small slatted buildings with porches. Finally, a smaller building is placed to complete the existing one on via Ampere, creating an entrance complex to the area. In the design of this edifice, an attempt has been made to reproduce the lines and proportions of the existing one, although detached through the use of totally different structures and materials. Another important element that was taken into account when drafting the project is the existing greenery; trees and shrubs already present on the site were selected and implemented.

Porto di Napoli, Naples, Italy
The main problem of the area is the complexity of connection all around the site area. There is a strong position about the situation of the waterfront in Napoli. There is an important article by Matilda Cerao «The sea doesn’t touch Naples». The sea is part of the landscape but there is no connection between the city and the sea. Now this area is used as a part of the port territory, as a storage for arrived goods. This is not a critical point. The main aim of the project was to solve the question «How we can change these elements and manage this private part of the city?» Now this waterfront area partly belongs to the authorities of the port, it is commercially used. We have an opportunity to reveal new ideas of the city. We can start to create a new image of the city, a new possible expansion of the city. Void places of territory could be filled and managed.
The project in this particular context with its problems. The positions of the buildings work in continuity with the existing form of the city, trying to create a new transition route and draw the seashore to the city.
Creating a Landmark, a new public space, and a square, which also creates the axis of the promenade.
In the composition, we work with two tall buildings, and systems, which allow anticipating the future development of this area, where one of the axes of the Port of Naples is progressively transformed into a city. The composition consist of finding urban proportions to these
Schwarzplan
towers and the existing building, with the heights able to relate to the scale of the context and give strength to this area. The objective is the relationship with the city. These two buildings give shape to a public space, within its urban limits and characteristics.
The character of the buildings in this area refers to the materiality of the main objects of the city, such as the series of Castles, the shape, and the urban density and its concentration.
Work on existing main building Magazzini Generali, keep it, find a compatible function and adapt it indoors, and make a few interventions the outside, where the blind façade is now located, look for a new entrance to the building in the lower band, and if necessary, place the stairs or other accessories useful for the functioning of the building. The Outdoor School
Here attitude is marked by the preservation of historical stratification. Correcting the decay visibly, since the only problems of the building are superficial. The condition of the structure is good and a project interacts and preserves it. Classrooms and other main spaces are boxes that are constructed through a secondary structural system in the original beam-column system. A semi-transparent facade that slightly touches the original concrete structure.
The resulting interventions are: protect the structure in reinforced concrete; replace railings with a new perimetral system; and demolish not original walls mainly on the whings, giving a historical character with transparency to ‘La Colonia Elioterapica Mari Pia di Savoia’ in Vercelli.
“A Landscaped Interior” Classroom
The Whole space, extending from interior to exterior, serves as the educational space of the outdoor school, only educational spaces are kept “indoor”.
“An Elevated and Translucent Cloud” Façade
A semi-transparent facade that slightly touches the original concrete structure, bringing special light quality to the interior spaces of the two wings. And it performs the function of additional safety for children.

From the Lenin Memorial to the Uzbekistan State Museum of History, the commemorative nature of the building persists over time regardless of its shift in program. On an urban scale, it remains an isolated monument in the heart of modern Tashkent, while the museum itinerary currently serves as a biased narrative of a glorified national history.
The intervention aims to get this monument involved in a continuous dynamism on both the urban level and its architectural program.
First, by freeing the lower levels, where public open spaces and cultural facilities are introduced, the connection between the museum building and its neighboring context is enhanced with both physical accessibility and multiple cultural activities. Second, evaluated as an iconic and crucial image in the collective memory of Tashkent, the central staircase, the podium, and the floating box above are preserved as much as possible in terms of their presence in the urban landscape.
Third, the museum itinerary is re-organized based on insight into the history of Uzbekistan territory, which is characterized by a hyper-complex interrelationship among regimes, cultural and ethnic groups, and is realized in a non-linear narrative presenting the historical continuity and diversity over space and time, with artifacts and multiple media. Placing inside a box vessel, the interior of the exhibition is wrapped with changing fluidity/ rigidity over different sections regarding the period and location it presents, overlapping with the modern structure and space from the 1970s.
The direction of the museum itinerary is reversed in contrast with the commemorative sequence, seen in its current and previous programs. Instead of approaching the building from the central staircase and entering the ritual room from the podium, the visit begins on the last floor (connected to the underground foyer with an elevator), continues on the second floor, and ends by entering the public atrium.

Client: City of Milan
Mission: The task is to design a new public building used for cultural events as well as promoting milanese businesses. The project site is located at the Piazza San Fedele.
Aim of the building: The building should have a general layout suitable for both commercial use and public events. Example of ac-tivities could be; popup store, gallery, bookshop, bar or brand events during fairs. It should also be used for re-presentations arranged by the city, dinner parties, press meetings or public exhibitions.
Expression: The building, despite its temporary use, should stand over time. It should appear as robust with a certain weight and dignity. It should adapt or refer to the con-text, history and profound buildings around the square, and at the same time stand for it self.
Building restrictions:
Building plot according to plan Footprint approx. 150 sqm.
2 floors + basement
Floor 1; General space; Floor 0; Area dedicated for reception General space; 1 main entran-
ce; Basement; Cloakroom + toilets Technical space Storage.
Communication: 1 elevator; 1 stairwell.
Regulation: Accessibility and fire regulation according to the city of Milan.
As a result: the designed pavilion is oriented towards the axis of the church, which is the main dominant feature, and the object is also shifted to the side, opening up and orienting people towards it. The character of the building was determined initially by the vision of this new object as independent, not requiring imitation in the context, but as a separate independent alien object. From the latter follows the choice of material, wood, which in the central alleys is present in coffered ceiling in the porticoes. The shape of the object comes from the Milanese archetypes and not directly from the exact surroundings.

The circle - over the site. As an MUSEO ARCHIVI DELLA TRIENNALE and its extensione.
The shape of the building stems from the archetypes of the surrounding area and in particular from the most important part of the Triennale building, the structure is characterized by rounded shapes at both ends, one huge exhibition part, the other a small inscription of a spiral staircase. The circle is inscribed in the morphology of the area, and works for the benefit of the city using the unused area above the railway tracks, and also on the natural small part of the park with its elevation changes. Returning to the topic of the memory archive, the main level goes under a hypothetical area of 6000 square meters for the archive, and under the circulation structure that will serve for the distribution of subsequent levels of the structure with a predominantly residential function, everything will be strung together on the initially given structure. The latter works to support the city and preserve more land, through densification in New York style Dense Section. The solution of facades is open from a collection of various elements for their reuse.

The building: construction and development

Inujima is a small island in a quiet inland sea called Seto Naikai. You can walk around the entire island in about 1 to 2 hours.
Based on analysis, a proposal for a project that establishes a clear relationship between the artificial and the natural landscape, between architecture and environment. The island as a whole is a place where architecture ultimately becomes the environment.
3. LIBRARY
The island would change through that project. Three buildings proposed to establish a relationship between inhabitants and visitors, nature and man-made construction, art and local life through the right program. The project triggered a transformation of the island attracting jung people. The project determines a new environment for the island creating a new fulcrum of places and ways that allow to use of the entire island area. The proposal is developed in a free yet respectful and sensitive way, a Shelter which is also an adaptation of the hotel, a Workshop which is an observatory, and a Library as a leisure place. The Shelter is inscribed on the main height and as a continua-
tion of the mountain landscape.
The workshop is divided into branches that are oriented towards the main directions of morphology and views of the island. In the end, the Library is interested in interpreting the dynamism of the surrounding natural landscape, with shifts in form creating a silhouette.

This Thesis aims to analyze and deepen one of the most complex and fascinating topics (for us) in the field of architecture: ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION.
To understand this theme, we focused on Mies Van der Rohe’s teaching method during his years as director of the Department of Architecture at IIT.
Starting with a brief, but dutiful, description of the German architect’s life and his work, we then focused on the methodology that Mies used during his years in America.
Through quotes, we analyzed Mies’ approach to teaching, his way of relating to students and teachers, his ideas on architectural practice, and also his “fears” in teaching ... We wanted to introduce a different Mies, a “hidden” Mies.
In conclusion, we took the risk to make a subjective and possible actualization of his methodological thinking, concluding that the method is the basis for autonomy in knowledge, specifically that architectural education is at the center of teaching.
