MESSAGE

From the

President of the Jamaica Foundation of Houston

Houston, Texas

Members and Friends of the Jamaica Foundation of Houston: We come together for the Jamaica Foundation of Houston’s Annual Independence Gala to celebrate Jamaica’s 60th Year of Independence with the theme “Re-Igniting a Nation”. Thank you for joining us at our preeminent social and fundraising event of the year. Having hosted virtual gala celebrations since the pandemic began in March of 2020, it is a pleasure to celebrate such a joyous occasion in person again. Since gaining our independence from Great Britain, Jamaica has proudly charted its course through infrastructure and industries, making an impact around the world. Jamaica has developed confidence in its economy, thanks to those back home and across the diaspora. We are proud ambassadors of our heritage, carrying on the legacy of Jamaicans who have come before us. As we look back on recent years, we saw tough economic times for Houstonians and those back home in Jamaica, due to the global pandemic. We have turned a corner in 2022, and I have had the pleasure of working with the Board of Directors and members of the Foundation to preserve our mission of culture, education, and volunteerism. We started this year, in January, with members and friends of the Foundation participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in Downtown Houston. In April, Steve Higgins, Internationally Renowned Jamaican Tenor, held Jamaica Folk Music Workshop ‘My Sweet Jamaica’ for youth to learn about aspects of Jamaican life through folk music. Then, friends of the Caribbean and the Greater Houston Community attended a Town Hall with Hon. R. Oliver Mair, Consulate General of Jamaica – Miami, and representatives from JAMPRO. The day after the Town Hall, Steve Higgins Productions in association with the Jamaica Foundation of Houston presented Love & Nostalgia: A Jamaica 60 Celebration Event under the distinguished patronage of the Jamaican Consulate General in Miami. The following month, in early May, The Jamaica Foundation of Houston participated in the Jamaica Consulate’s Hi-5K Walk/Run, an event by the Jamaican Diaspora of the Southern USA, under the jurisdiction of the Consulate. Later in May, the Foundation held a Scholarship Awards Celebration and was able to award ten scholarships to deserving college students. In June, as part of our Jamaica 60 celebration events, the Foundation partnered with Jamaican writer and filmmaker Judith Falloon-Reid, the first Jamaican woman to visit Antarctica, to bring a one-of-a-kind experience to our city entitled ‘Aaah-Inspiring Antarctica: A Jamaican on Ice!’. What an engaging year we have had to celebrate Jamaica’s 60th year of independence! It is important for Jamaicans in Houston and the greater metropolitan area to continue working together to demonstrate a positive influence on our culture. My vision is for us to maximize scholarship awards and focus more on celebrating the culture of our people. We must continue to uphold our vision to ‘Know Jamaica, make her known’. Upholding our vision also creates a path for our youth, who will continue our legacy. “If yuh waa good, yuh nose haffi run”, meaning that success takes great effort and sometimes sacrifice. MESSAGE Congratulations J Prime Minister of Jamaica 53Jamaica years of Indepe Kingston, From the

2022 INDEPENDENCE MESSAGE TO JAMAICANS IN THE DIASPORA The Most Honourable Andrew Holness, ON, MP

On the Occasion of JFH Independence Celebration I extend warm greetings to the members of the Jamaica Foundation of Houston as you commemorate Jamaica’s 60th Independence. Jamaica has a vibrant and rich history. Steeped in our history was the determination to be politically independent. Sixty years later this feat has been accomplished, but modern Jamaica must not only be politically independent; we must be economically independent. As the Government takes the necessary steps to secure economic growth and prosperity, I commend the Diaspora for its efforts in securing opportunities for Jamaicans at home and abroad. Jamaica is poised for growth and development, and the diaspora plays an integral and active role in the process. As a country, we are mindful that we must partner for growth. It is for this reason the Government continues to undertake initiatives that will harness the power of the diaspora.

The Most Honourable

Andrew Holness, ON, MP Prime Minister of Jamaica

The Diaspora is a national asset, therefore we must identify and cultivate avenues to connect with highly skilled individuals and link them to various national economic development projects. The Jamaica Foundation of Houston has undoubtedly demonstrated its dedication to Jamaica’s development. This is evidence through the many contributions to education and community development. On behalf of the people of Jamaica, I thank you wholeheartedly for your commitment to nation building. I seize this opportunity to encourage every member of the Foundation to continue to invest in Jamaica. You play a meaningful role in private and public investment, trade, knowledge transfer, and in providing mentorship and strategic guidance to local businesses and entrepreneurs. As we ‘One Nation, One People’ this Independence, we salute you and look forward to greater partnerships as together we make Jamaica the place to live, raise families and do business. Best wishes for a successful Independence celebration. The Most Honourable Andrew Holness, ON, MP Prime Minister of Jamaica

Jamaica Sees Potential of CARICOM Visa Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, says the implementation of a regional visa regime among CARICOM nations has huge economic potential for tourism recovery and development in the region. “A regional visa regime is something that we’ve been talking about. I think if we are to build Caribbean tourism, then we must recognize that as individual states, we are too small to grow and to benefit from the recovery of tourism as it now stands, but together as a region, we can grow and we can benefit,” Bartlett outlined. He was addressing journalists at the inaugural Organization of American States (OAS) on building the resilience of Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises’ (SMTEs) at the Holiday Inn Resort in Montego Bay on July 20, 2022. “A big advantage of this multi-destination is that it offers multiple experiences for visitors who are coming from long haul areas. So, let’s say you’re coming from China and have three weeks of vacation. You don’t want to spend three weeks in Jamaica alone, but you can spend a week in Jamaica, three days there, two days here, another day somewhere else and you come back to wherever the hub was. One fee, one pack-

6

age, one price and we all benefit from it together,” the Minister explained. Additionally, he stated that CARICOM nations would also stand to benefit from sharing common airspace where airlines flying into the Caribbean will pay one fee. He said the tourism visas could also facilitate pre-clearance arrangements for visitors coming into the region. “It will allow them to clear customs in Jamaica and be domestic in Trinidad, Barbados and so on, and what that will do in essence, it will bring more airlines into our space because the turnaround time for the aircraft will be significantly reduced as a result. More rotations could be had, and thus more visitors can come in,” Mr. Bartlett pointed out. “The other element of importance is that it also provides a new skill set to be developed in the Caribbean area. What tourism will be doing is now saying we’re not just people who have bartenders, cooks, and housekeepers, but we are into technology, aviation, logistics and procurement,” he added. The high-level policy forum was a two-day event (July 20-21) with representatives from more than 50 countries across the Americas. Source: Jamaica Information Service

MESSAGE From the

Honorary Consul of Jamaica Houston, Texas

Khalfani Omari Fullerton Attorney and Counsel-at-Law 6001 Savoy Drive, Suite 509 Houston, TX 77036 (713) 782-8494 My Fellow Jamaicans and Friends: It is my distinct pleasure to salute the distinguished officers, members, and guests at this spectacular 60th year of Jamaica Independence Celebration event hosted by the Jamaican Foundation of Houston to celebrate Jamaica 60th year of independence. Our theme is ‘Reigniting A Nation for Greatness. I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the Jamaica Foundation of Houston for more than 41 years of outstanding service to the City of Houston, the State of Texas, the Texas Jamaican Communities, and our beloved Jamaica. Furthermore, I would like to pay tribute to the founders, former presidents, members, board members past and President Dr. Nicole BentJones of the Jamaica Foundation of Houston. Our Independence celebrations provide us with an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our nation and our people. It is a time to strengthen our resolve to work even harder for the advancement of Jamaica. As we celebrate Jamaica 60th year of Independence, we must remember that it took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get where Jamaica is today. Jamaica is a great nation with great people all over the world. We have made tremendous progress despite being robbed by the countries who colonized us and enslaved our people. We should never forget where we are coming from. However, we must work to make sure that the Jamaica we leave to our children is better than the Jamaica we have today. There is always room for improvement and progress in every country. Jamaica is a great Nation, and we are destining for greatness. Our people will continue to ignite Jamaica for greatness.

Khalfani Omari Fullerton Attorney and Counsel-at-Law Houston, Texas

I encourage our brothers and sisters in Jamaica, the United States, and the rest of the world to invest their time and capital, and to encourage the developed nations to take a pro-active role in investing in Jamaica. Investing in Jamaica makes great business sense. Global prosperity is the greatest equalizer in reducing poverty, hunger, and underdevelopment. We must share the vision of Jamaica whose future is brighter than the sun that shines there, and together we can all work to assure our homeland that bright future. I feel tremendously blessed and extremely honored to have recently completed my 14th year as the Honorary Consul of Jamaica in Houston, Texas. As I begin my 15th year in this office, I would like to thank the entire community for their support. I am equally appreciative of the support of the Jamaica Foundation of Houston and the entire Jamaican community. Happy 60th Independence Day Jamaica! in real estate as a realtor for Coldwell Bankers Limited. He cites among his priorities during his tenure as working with the Jamaican community to focus on issues related to education, health, youth and business investment in Jamaica, stressing that there are strong investment opportunities in Jamaica and he is ready to work with Jamaicans and other interested parties in the United States to take advantage of these opportunities as Jamaica continues to gain high marks as prime for investment. While he considers the Consulate staff a very efficient team, he is confident that they will continue to steer the office right as he steps out and engage the community. “Engaging the community is my goal.” Mair has expressed particular interest in having the Jamaican Diaspora organize itself to undertake and support the Jamaican Health Ministry initiative to adopt and develop one or more health clinics in Jamaica. While he commends the various community groups for their ongoing commitment to Jamaica’s national interest and economic development, which includes contributions to healthcare, he is looking forward to working diligently to improve healthcare, especially in the rural areas through collaborative efforts. Born and raised in the warm tropical climate of the Caribbean and worked around the world as an expert in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Technical Writer, Telecommunication Engineering, and Project Management. For over twenty years, he has lectured in Electrical Engineering, Project management, and Mathematics at many universities. However, in this book, Sylvanus Donaie explores social and economic injustices bringing a unique view of the world around us as expressed in poems. It’s the reality. The inspiration for the book bubbled after years of watching the theatrics of the Democrats and Republicans fighting for the control of the American people. They want to influence your ability to learn, think, choose, and reason. The sadness is a sight to see preachers supporting the dirtiness of politicians and prophesying these schemes as God’s unshakeable will. More so, they want to create a country where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It brings the reality of a free-will world unraveling the notion of capitalism propagation. Understand, the capitalists spread their ideology through propaganda and fake news trapping people in the paths that it creates. It begins with the breaking down of the educational system Donaie highlights the reality of the poor man’s living, struggles, and mindset in his poetic format. Poems to show how the Governments and their rich cronies use a blend of false news and directives muddled with activities in capitalism, Christianity, and poverty as their whipping stick. He brings awareness because “Iron sharpens iron.” FOR BOOKS AND SPEAKING ENAGEMENTS Call 832-881-9745 or Email at onelovehouston@gmail.com

LENOX BROWN

Scholarship Recipient

I received a scholarship from the Jamaica Foundation of Houston in 2015. The scholarship I received meant a lot for me. It helped ease my worries of the cost of attending an institution of higher learning, but most importantly it gave me the sense that I had a community rooting for me to succeed. I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering in 2019 and with my Master’s of Science in Civil Engineering in 2020 with an emphasis in structures. I am currently a structural engineer at SCA Consulting Engineers in Sugarland, TX. I design residential and commercial building of various sizes constructed from wood, steel, or concrete.

National Anthem Of The

United States Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there. O, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free And the home of the brave?

National Anthem Of

LIFESTYLE Inspiring Noadiah Watson This is Her Story

It is said that the journey of a thousand miles begins

with one step. And this is the story of young Noadiah Watson, who at twelve years, took her first step. She was born with a rare birth defect called phocomelia. She suffered with many difficulties, but at the age of five, she dreamt of being able to physically walk into her classroom. After several surgeries at Shriners in Galveston, Texas, her dream came true. She walked. It was a life changer for her. Phocomelia syndrome is a rare birth defect characterized, in most instances, by severe malformation of the extremities. Infants born with this condition will have arms and/or legs that are severely shortened or sometimes completely absent. According to her mother, Michelle Mattis, “Twelve years ago, I gave birth to my beautiful little girl with congenital deformities. She had two fingers and six toes. Noadiah, given her condition, accepted herself for her challenges.” Noadiah’s parents hand carried her oftentimes with the help of a stroller, because her only means of moving was Her devotion to study placed on the principal’s honor by using her knees. Despite, she excelled in her school’s roll for six consecutive years. lessons; as kindergarten student, she aimed for excellence. Her handwriting amazed her teachers for someone with just two fingers. She formed her letters correctly much to the chagrin of her classmate. Noadiah’s “always eager to learn more” attitude was contagious, oftentimes pushing those around her to study harder and really focus on schoolwork; failure was never an option for her. The Issa Trust Foundation centered this process to help Noadiah. “I must say thanks to the Issa Trust Foundation for being there. Without them, she would not be able to move around on her feet instead of her knees. I thank all her cheerleaders as she transitions into high school,” stated Michelle. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, she echoed, “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. Noadiah came to Houston for her regular medical followups at the Shriners Hospital. ISA Foundation referred Noadiah Watson and her family to the Jamica Foundation of Houston, who brought in the Jamaican community in Houston to play a keen supportive role in this effort. Noadiah attends Westwood High School in Jamaica with the hope of becoming a doctor.
