SHARIFA CHARLES Ms Sharifa Charles hails from the beautiful island of St Lucia. Her passion for Public Health began as a high school peer educator and has since influenced her choices in career and education. She is a graduate of the UNIVERSITY OF ST THOMAS (MN) in Community Health Education and American Cultural Studies with an emphasis in African American Studies. Upon relocating to Houston, she was granted the opportunity to join the AIDS Foundation Houston team as a CDC Evidence-Based Intervention Program facilitator/HIV tester & counselor. She enjoys working closely with populations of color, from all walks of life in order to test, educate and empower them regarding their sexual health. She recently graduated from the African American HIV University/Community Mobilization College, through a fellowship program with The Black AIDS Institute. Ms. Charles hopes to always inspire people to educate themselves and to maintain their sexual health, and the health of those around them.
DZIFA JOB Dzifa Job is a freelance writer and the voice behind the blog Musings of an Empress. Her writings have appeared in Outlish, ‘One Love Caribbean News,’ ‘The Good, The Bad, The Ugly In Sports,’ ‘The Integrationist Quarterly,’ and ‘Caribbean Axis.’ Dzifa is a graduate of Syracuse University, and holds a bachelors degree in Public Relations from the Newhouse School of Communications. A national of Trinidad & Tobago, she is a communications professional residing in New York. Dzifa spends her downtime writing, training for fitness challenges and going on adventure vacations. Count her in if you’re training for a half marathon or planning a weekend skydiving get away. Dzifa describe herself on Facebook: “Life is 10 percent what happens to us and 90 percent how we react. Wendi-Ann Walker, MA is a recent transplant to Houston, TX and restaurateur of Jamaica House, a Caribbean cafĂŠ in the Galleria. Prior to venturing into the Hospitality industry she spent eight years as a Registered Financial Planner to businesses and individuals in New Jersey. She has conducted financial workshops and seminars on a range of financial topics and continues to share her expertise through speaking engagements. Currently she consults with businesses on strategy and development, business plans, identifying funding resources and creating efficiencies. She also consults with individuals by creating financial plans and offers investment analysis of 401(k)s and investment portfolios. Mrs. Walker is not affiliated with any firm and offers unbiased recommendations to those with whom she consults. Mrs. Walker is originally a product of St. Andrew, Jamaica. She attended University of the West Indies, where she completed her Bachelors in Economics and completed her Masters at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. She currently holds a life and health license and is Series 7 licensed as an investment advisor. When not operating Jamaica House, she spends her time with family and supports local organizations that share their culture with the greater Houston community. She enjoys travel, cooking, writing poetry and the outdoors
THECIA JENKINS
Thecia Jenkins is a speaker, trainer, author, certified life coach and consultant residing in Houston, Texas. She is the Human Resource & Education Director for The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc., a crisis intervention agency providing emergency shelter, transitional shelter and community outreach in southeast Harris County and owner of Bold Profession Seminars & Consulting. Ms. Jenkins has been actively involved in the domestic violence movement since 1997 by developing, implementing and evaluating educational programs for law enforcement, health care providers, social workers and the general community to increase awareness about the issue of domestic violence. She is a past board member of Asians Against Domestic Abuse, a contributing writer to the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault Cultural Competency Manual, past Vice President of Professional Development for the American Society for Training & Development’s Houston Chapter. She currently serves on the Communities In Schools board, and Neighborhood Center Inc. advisory board. Ms. Jenkins has presented at the Texas Council on Family Violence, National College of District Attorneys, University of Utah, Austin Community College, New Mexico District Attorney Annual Conference, West Texas Conference on Aging and other conferences. Her topics include cultural competency, domestic violence, emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication. She most recently was featured as a contributing author in the book Inspired Women Succeed and is a staff writer for Houston’s only Caribbean newspaper; One Love Caribbean. She is a graduate of Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas with an undergraduate degree in Government and Sociology. She has certifications in Behavioral Consulting, Diversity Management and Life Coaching. Memberships include Certified Coaches
