MESSAGE
From the President
Members, friends, families, and distinguished guests, it is with humility, gratitude, honor, and appreciation that I welcome you on behalf of the Houston Virgin Islands Association’s (HVIA) 7th Anniversary and Transfer Day Celebration. Seven years ago, HVIA was formed among a group of friends, and we became a non-profit 501c3 organization. We are a philanthropic and cultural group. Overcome by unimaginable obstacles and the uncertainty of the pandemic, we were able to make it through by the Grace of God. I am truly honored to serve as President of this dynamic and fascinating organization. My vision is to be a strong role model to my membership and my community. One that is not the talker but a listener, one that is not a dictator but the initiator, and one that’s not a taker but a giver. Being a true leader does not come without trials; it comes with challenges and commitments to others and oftentimes forsaking oneself. I strongly believe that change will not happen unless it is driven from the top and carried out as a team. Our past experiences have brought us hope, strength, and courage as we venture forward. The strength of HVIA compensates for our weaknesses, but our wisdom continues to embrace our growth. I invite persons both in the homeland and the diaspora to partner with us and be confident that we will all triumph together. To the Executive Board and General Members, I am forever humbled and honored. The truth is... we could not have done this without patience, loyalty, devotion, and consideration. I extend a heartfelt thank you to each one of you. Governor Albert Bryan, Jr., thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit the diaspora in Houston. We love our Virgin Islands; it is home. And we look forward to returning home and bringing our expertise and talent to make the VI a best place. Virgin Islands nice. MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER OF TOURISM On behalf of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, I welcome all guests to this year’s 2nd Anniversary Transfer Day Celebration, sponsored by the Houston Virgin Islands Association (HVIA). We are delighted to return as sponsors of this gala in recognition of the day the U.S. Virgin Islands gained American citizenship.
Tonight’s keynote speaker will be our own Governor Albert Bryan Jr. as he discusses the importance of the diaspora and native connection. Following this, Virgin Islander and renowned reggae artist, Pressure Busspipe will take the stage as our entertainment headliner. Pressure is one of our most recognized ambassadors and embodies USVl’s pride and spirit wherever he goes. Additionally, USVI Ambassadors DJ Avalanche, DJ Marshall and DJ Tonic, along with the J-Unit Band, will complete this evening’s musical line up with their own unique Caribbean sound. Thank you to President Carol Cuffy and the entire 40-plus members of the HVIA for hosting this event and continuing to be a bridge between the U.S. Virgin Islands and Houston diaspora. KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Governor Albert Bryan Jr. Governor Albert Bryan Jr. is a native of St. Thomas who migrated to the island of St. Croix as a young teen. He graduated from the St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School in 1985 and went to matriculate at Wittenberg University in Ohio and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1989. Immediately after college, Governor Bryan returned home to the Virgin Islands where he began a successful career in both the private and public sectors holding positions of responsibility at HESS Oil Corporation, the V.I. Housing Authority, and Innovative Communications. The managerial experience gained at these private sector jobs and from working closely with and on behalf of a labor union would be crucial for his future entry into public service. Governor Bryan has always exhibited a lifelong passion for politics and dedication to community service. In 2002, he co-founded Generation Now! Inc., a non-profit organization created to engage public discourse on key political and social issues and to mentor younger professionals of the Virgin Islands. He also served on the Executive Board of the Young Democrats and other organizations where he tirelessly lobbied for the improvement of life in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Not one to shy away from opportunities for education and learning enhancement, Governor Bryan also earned a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of the Virgin Islands in 2003. In 2007, he was appointed as the Commissioner of Labor by then Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. During his eight-year tenure, he implemented the Jobs for America’s Graduates Initiative for at-risk youth, secured over $14 million in additional funding for training and improvement of services at the Department of Labor, and $150 million in federal unemployment benefits after the closing of the Hovensa Refinery. His approach of doing more through technology allowed the department to implement several new web-based tools for career preparation and job search including the Virgin Islands Electronic Workforce System and Youthnet. During his tenure as Commissioner of Labor, Governor Bryan also served as Chairman of the Government Development Bank and Chairman of the Economic Development Authority Board, ushering in new programs for the economic growth of the territory. In 2015, with the change in administrations, Governor Bryan returned to the private sector as an entrepreneur and not-for-profit executive. He was the President/CEO of Aabra Group, a consultancy which focused on fostering and supporting innovative entrepreneurship opportunities and businesses in the territory. He was also the CEO of Master Strategies, a locally based human resources recruiting firm. And, in keeping with his passion for young people, education, and entrepreneurship, he also served as the Executive Director of Junior Achievement of the Virgin Islands. In the August 2018 Virgin Islands Democratic Primary, Governor Bryan was on the ballot for a public office for his first time. He and his running mate, Senator Tregenza A. Roach, Esq. defeated two other Democratic teams and went on to defeat six other formidable teams in the General Election in November 2018. In January 2020, Governor Bryan was sworn as the ninth elected Governor of the United States Virgin Islands.

VI LIFESTYLE The Importance of the Virgin Islands Diaspora By Sylvanus Donaie
There is no place on this earth where I would rather spend my Christmas holidays than in Sunny Cruz (St. Croix in the Virgin Islands). Oh, it’s the johnnycake, sorrel, coquito, and guavaberry. It’s the fore-day morning music serenade with Stanley and the Sleepless Knights. It’s the quadrille dance and the carnival village and parades. And I spend a boatload of money. It’s a total package. But there are many other places on my bucket list to visit. Who engages me to ensure that I return home year after year? Allow me to explain.
The impact of diaspora engagement is huge. Here is its practicality:

TRAILBLAZERS MRS. RITA R. VANTERPOOL-GREENE
Mrs. Rita R. Vanterpool-Greene (affectionally known as Mammie Rita) is a native of Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Upon migrating to St. Thomas, Rita worked in the food-service industry and opened a paté shop making the best tasting patés on the island. For this reason, she gained the title of the Paté Queen. She married Bishop Arthur Greene and relocated to South Carolina and became a foster parent for several years. Mammie Rita served as First Lady of The Church of God of Prophecy for over 30 years, working from an usher to the Women Missionary Leader. Today, her love for cooking still enlightens her community. Now, at the age of 84, Mama Rita finds pleasure in the kitchen preparing delicious meals and making patés. And she still lives by the principle, “If I can help somebody along the way then my living is not in vain.”
MRS. MARGARET WALWYN
Margaret Walwyn was born on the island of Monserrat on August 2, 1941. In 1955, she relocated to St. Thomas making it her home. Margaret married and raised seven children. Mrs. Walwyn attended the University of Virgin Islands where she completed a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. In St. Thomas, she was well known as the local herbalist recommending various local herbs to different ailments. Mrs. Walwyn worked her garden growing local fruits and vegetables and selling them at home and local markets. Mrs. Walwyn loves to do crossword puzzles. She is a long-time member of St. Andrews Anglican church in St. Thomas. She now resides in Missouri City, Texas. Page 12

At the tender age of five, a little Crucian girl, JoAnne began singing at the New Testament Church of God on the beautiful island of St. Croix. By age of eight, she began opening for various artists at concerts and events in the Virgin Islands. Now a recording artist, she released two CDs: Back to the Altar and After the Storm; the late Al Baptiste of the Xpress Band produced her recordings. Her gospel recordings flavored with her Caribbean cultured genres of Soca, Calypso, and Reggae as well as R&B, Country, and American Gospel. Her music continues to be played during gospel hours across radio stations in Virgin Islands. JoAnne now resides in Atlanta, where she continues to headline concerts across the United States and the Caribbean with continuous praise. She is widely sorted after to lead “Praise and Worship” at various churches.

Born and raised in the warm tropical climate of the Caribbean and worked around the world as an expert in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Technical Writer, Telecommunication Engineering, and Project Management. For over twenty years, he has lectured in Electrical Engineering, Project management, and Mathematics at many universities. However, in this book, Sylvanus Donaie explores social and economic injustices bringing a unique view of the world around us as expressed in poems. It’s the reality. The inspiration for the book bubbled after years of watching the theatrics of the Democrats and Republicans fighting for the control of the American people.
