Ellerstina dio la sorpresa en el Abierto de Argentina. No se les esperaba en un año en el que el equipo de 40 goles era el vecino y archirrival, La Dolfina, y en el que, supuestamente, había aún piezas por engranar. Sin embargo, el año en el que todos pensaban que veríamos la primera Triple Corona del equipo de Cambiaso, se convirtió en el de la casi Triple Corona de Ellerstina. La rivalidad entre ambos no deja de crecer.

Ellerstina was the surprise in the Argentina Open. They were not favourites in a year in which the 40-goal team was its neighbor and archrival, La Dolfina, and in which, theoretically, they were still engaging the performance. However, the year that the first Triple Crown for Cambiaso´s team was expected, became Ellerstina´s almostTriple Crown. The rivalry, never sems to stop growing. We introduce the US and Dubai seasons -still playing today-, the World Snow Polo Cup at St. Moritz and also take a look to the Santa Maria Polo Club´s Spring Season, held these days in Sotogrande. Much more than just a taste of what will be the 42nd International Polo Tournament, which will bring many new features and surprises. Finally, in what is related to polo, we include for the first time a special section including all results of games taht took place at the Santa Maria Polo Club last year, pages that will be published annually from now on and will be enriched with more information in the future. The Ladies Golf Cup International Final and the test car performance review by the renowned journalist Carlos Enriquez de Salamanca of the spectacular Jaguar XJ 3.0 V6, plus our usual sections, complete our # 17. Ellerstina Existía gran expectación por ver qué sucedería en el Abierto de Argentina. Los dos aspirantes al torneo más importante del mundo iban a ser, cómo no, La Dolfina y Ellerstina, que jugarían en Palermo su sexta final consecutiva. Un encuentro que no iba sino a acrecentar la rivalidad existente entre los dos mejores equipos de los últimos años.

Y es que, tras la gran conquista en Tortugas, Ellerstina había caído sin paliativos en Hurlingham ante su eterno rival. Un empate en el tanteador que colocaba al torneo celebrado en el Campo Argentino de Polo de Buenos Aires como juez para determinar el nombre del mejor equipo del año… honor que, en buena lógica, debería ir a parar a La Dolfina, merced a sus 40 goles de hándicap.

La Dolfina, el equipo del gran Adolfo Cambiaso, tuvo que sortear en Palermo un grupo en el que Pilará se presentaba como mayor amenaza. Así, comenzó su andadura en el torneo con un triunfo ante Magual por un claro 17-9; mientras, Pilará se deshacía por la mínima (13-12) de Alegría en uno de los partidos claves del grupo. En la segunda jornada, Alegría, el equipo de Los Merlos, acusó la decepción de la derrota anterior y cayó por un contundente 18-6 ante el gran favorito del grupo… y del campeonato. Ya en el partido definitivo de la Liga A, Pilará necesitaba ganar a La Dolfina –y hacerlo por más de siete goles–, para colarse en la final, pero el equipo de 40 goles de handicap cumplió los pronósticos y se impuso por un cómodo 18-13, sin dar ninguna oportunidad al equipo liderado por Sebastián Merlos.

Por el otro lado del cuadro, Ellerstina se las tuvo que ver con La Aguada Las Monjitas, La Natividad y La Aguada, equipos de un nivel parejo que, tal y como se preveía, le complicaron bastante las cosas al favorito de la Liga 2. De hecho, en los tres partidos que disputó, Ellerstina se fue al descanso con resultados muy igualados, y no pudo resolverlos hasta el último tramo. Al final, a pesar de todo, triunfos para los tres Pieres (Facundo, Gonzalito y Nico) y el cuñado de todos ellos, Mariano Aguerre, por 12-10, 16-14 y 18-14, respectivamente.

Como era de esperar, los momentos iniciales fueron un tira y afloja entre ambos equipos, que saldaron los primeros chukkers con máxima igualdad (2-1, 4-4). Durante el tercer parcial no se dieron respiro: ida y vuelta de un lado a otro de la cancha con oportunidades que no llegaban a concretarse (5-5). Así, La Dolfina llegó al descanso con un 7-6 que les daba una ligera ventaja sobre sus rivales, gracias a una nueva exhibición de Adolfo Cambiasso. En la segunda mitad, la historia tenía reservado un lugar para un Ellerstina. A partir del quinto chukker despertó de su letargo y el desarrollo del partido cambió de la mano de Facundo Pieres y Mariano Aguerre, que pusieron por delante a su equipo con un parcial de 3 a 0. Ni siquiera el despliegue de juego mostrado por Cambiaso fue esta vez suficiente para volver a igualar el partido durante el sexto (11-8). Al contrario que en jornadas anteriores, el desbordado era ahora La Dolfina, que no parecía encontrar el ritmo de juego con el que había venido ganando.

Vista la situación, a La Dolfina no le quedaba más remedio que jugársela a todo o nada, y así lo hizo. Sin embargo, sus esfuerzos resultaron estériles, entre otras cosas por el trabajo de un increíble Facundo Pieres, incansable también en el séptimo chukker, que hizo un golazo de cogote para poner a su equipo con cuatro goles de diferencia... ventaja que empezaba a parecer demasiada a falta de tan poco tiempo para el final. A pesar de todo, y como corresponde a un equipo ganador, La Dolfina no se rindió; primero Juan Martín Nero, y luego Adolfo Cambiaso, recortaron distancias hasta el 12 a 10. Con sólo un chukker por jugarse, los siguientes siete minutos se presentaban apasionantes: había que mantener la portería a cero y tratar de marcar rápido para que las dudas comenzasen a surgir en Ellerstina.

La gran final del 8 de diciembre suponía la culminación de una temporada atípica, en la que la lluvia se había convertido en clara protagonista, prácticamente de principio a fin. El ‘dream team’ de La Dolfina, que partía como favorito después de su triunfo en el Abierto de Hurlingham, tuvo un campeonato más regular que sus rivales, por lo que todos los pronósticos auguraban una victoria del equipo de Cambiaso. Los Pieres, sin embargo, venían con ganas de revancha tras su derrota en Hurlingham. El partido más esperado del año se disputó ante la presencia de miles de personas, que se acercaron hasta la Catedral para disfrutar de una gran tarde de polo.

There was high expectation of what would transpire at the Argentine Polo Open. The two contenders for the world’s biggest tournament were, as if it would be any other way, La Dolfina and Ellerstina, which would play their sixth consecutive final in Palermo, a meeting that could only contribute to the rivalry between the two best teams in recent years.

La Dolfina, the team of great Adolfo Cambiaso, had to overcome in Palermo a group in which Pilará appeared as the greatest rival. They began the tournament with a win against Magual, by a clear 17-9; meanwhile, Pilará defetated Alegria by one goal (13-12), in what proved to be one of the group’s key games. On the second day, Alegría fell by a convincing 18-6 to the favorite of the group... and of the tournament. Already in the final match of the A-League, Pilará needed to beat La Dolfina -and do so by more than seven goals- in order to get into the finals. However the team with the 40 goals met all expectations and won by a comfortable 18–13, without giving any opportunities to the team led by Sebastian Merlos.

The two best teams of this era came to Palermo without any choice to win the Triple Crown. After the great victory at Tortugas Ellerstina had fallen in Hurlingham to its eternal rival. The tie made Campo Argentino de Polo de Buenos Aires the place that would decide the name of the best team of the year... an honor that, should end up with La Dolfina thanks to their 40 goals...

Goal-scoring, defense and upset

On the other side of the table, Ellerstina had to deal with La Aguada Las Monjitas, La Natividad and La Aguada, teams of the same level that, as expected, complicated things for the B-League favourites. In fact, during the three matches they played, Ellerstina went into halftime with very close results, and could not secure the victory until the final stretch of the games. In the end, all three Pieres (Facundo, Gonzalito and Nico) and their brother-in-law Mariano Aguerre, triumphed by 12-10, 16-14 and 18-14, respectively.

The grand final on December 8th was the culmination of an atypical season in which the rain had a clear role, appearing practically from start to finish. The ‘dream team’ of La Dolfina, who were the favorites following their victory at the Hurlingham Open, had a more conventional tournament than their rivals, and so all predicted a victory for them. The Pieres, however, were determined to avenge their defeat at Hurlingham.

Las cosas comenzaron bien para los de Cambiaso, pues a los 30 segundos de comenzado el chukker decisivo, una falta de Gonzalo Pieres a Pelón Stirling les concedió un 60 yardas, una inmejorable oportunidad para recortar distancias. Sin embargo, el disparo de Cambiaso se marchó fuera. Con La Dolfina volcada sobre la portería de su rival, Ellerstina concedió un nuevo penalty, esta vez desde 30 yardas… que Cambiaso, insólitamente, volvió a errar. Sin bajar los brazos, La Dolfina continuó presionando y atacando y fruto del esfuerzo obtuvo una tercera falta (60 yardas)… que Ellerstina consiguió bloquear. La sensación de impotencia de La Dolfina era palpable a falta de dos minutos para el final. Con casi todo decidido, Juan Martín Nero lo intentó de nuevo, pero el disparo también se marchó fuera. Ellerstina sacó por fin la bocha de sus dominios y Mariano Aguerre, tantas veces campeón antes con Cambiaso, la siguió hasta el pitido final entre gestos de júbilo. Ellerstina había ganado, contra todo pronóstico, el partido del año.

The most anticipated game of the year was held before thousands of people, who came to the Polo Cathedral to enjoy a great afternoon of polo. As expected, the initial moments were a tug of war between the two teams, who settled the first chukker with the score close (2-1, 4-4). The third quarter was non-stop action: back and forth from one side of the court to the other, with opportunities failing to materialize (5-5). La Dolfina arrived at halftime with a 7-6 lead which gave them a slight edge over their rivals, thanks to a new exhibition of Adolfo Cambiasso. In the second half, the story had reserved a place for an Ellerstina, who soon awakened from their slumber. Starting in the fifth chukker, the control of the game changed to the hands of Facundo Pieres and Mariano Aguerre, who put their side ahead with a difference of 3-0. Not even the execution of play shown by Cambiaso was enough to level the game in the sixth (11-8). Unlike in the previous days, La Dolfina couldn’t find the performance to get back in the match.

También fueron premiados Gonzalo Pieres (Jugador con mejores monturas en la final), Claudio Pérez, Asistente de Gonzalo Pieres Sr. (Premio Especial) y las yeguas Dolfina Buenaventura (Adolfo Cambiaso) y Open Guillermina (Nico Pieres). Asimismo, Adolfo Cambiaso obtuvo un merecido reconocimiento como máximo goleador del campeonato, con 32 goles.

Things started off well for Cambiaso: 30 seconds into the decisive chukker, when a foul by Gonzalo Pieres on Pelon Stirling conceded 60-yards, providing a great opportunity to catch up. However, Cambiaso’s shot went wide. With La Dolfina constantly attacking their opponent’s goal, Ellerstina conceded another penalty, this time from 30 yards... that Cambiaso, uncharacteristically, missed again. Without giving up, La Dolfina continued pressing and attacking, and their efforts led to a third foul (60 yards)... that Ellerstina was able to block. La Dolfina’s feeling of helplessness was evident in the remaining two minutes. With almost all decided, Juan Martin Nero tried again, but the shot also went out. Ellerstina took the ball from their area and Mariano Aguerre, a champion many times before with Cambiaso, continued until the final whistle amid gestures of joy. Ellerstina had won, against all odds, the game of the year.

So, La Dolfina had no other choice but to bet all or nothing. However, their efforts were futile against the performance of an incredible Facundo Pieres, who was tireless in the seventh chukker, and executed an amazing goal to put a four goal difference on the scoreboard, an advantage that was starting to look decisive in the absence of time remaining. Nevertheless, and as is fitting for a winning team, La Dolfina did not surrender, and first Juan Martin Nero, then Adolfo Cambiaso, reduced the difference to 12-10. With one chukker left, the next seven minutes appeared to be the most exciting. La Dolfina had to keep a clean sheet and try to score quickly to stem the confidence of Ellerstina...

Facundo Pieres was named MVP of the tournament, thanks to his seven goals in the final, one less than Cambiaso, who despite playing a memorable game, paid a steep price with his three fouls in the last chukker. Awards were also given to Gonzalo Pieres (player with the best pony in the final), Claudio Perez, assistant of Gonzalo Pieres Sr. (special award) and the mares Dolfina Buenaventura (Adolfo Cambiaso) and Open Guillermina (Nico Pieres). In addition, Adolfo Cambiaso received deserved recognition as the top scorer of the tournament with 32 goals.

El Torneo congregó a seis equipos, que fueron divididos en dos grupos. Ghantoot Polo impresionó a sus rivales a lo largo de los seis días de la primera ronda, al ser el único equipo en conseguir tres victorias sobre tres posibles. Por su parte, los campeones defensores, Abu Dhabi Polo, sufrieron dos derrotas iniciales, pero consiguieron colarse en la siguiente ronda gracias a su mejor diferencia de goles con respecto a Zedan Polo, que perdió sus opciones de clasificación en este partido. Al final, tras nueve enfrentamientos, los equipos semifinalistas fueron Ghantoot Polo y Habtoor Polo, del Grupo A; y Bin Drai Polo y Abu Dhabi Polo, del B.

La temporada de polo en Dubai comenzó el 2 de febrero con la Silver Cup, la primera competición de las Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2013 (Dubai Open). El torneo tuvo lugar en el Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club y en él participaron seis equipos de 16 goles. / The polo season in Dubai kicked off on February 2nd with the Silver Cup, the first competition of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2013 (Dubai Open). The tournament, which took place at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club, showcased six teams up to 16 goals. The tournament drew six teams, which were divided into two groups. Ghantoot Polo impressed the competition throughout the six days of group play, as they were the only team to come away with three consecutive victories. Defending champions Abu Dhabi Polo on the other hand sustained two disappointing opening losses, but were nevertheless able to sneak past to the next round of competition with a greater goal differential than bottom-of-the-group Zedan Polo. After a total of nine matches, four semi-finalists emerged, with Ghantoot Polo and Habtoor Polo from Group A; and Bin Drai Polo and Abu Dhabi Polo from Group B.

En la prórroga, Juan José Storni consiguiría el único gol para dar a Abu Dhabi la victoria por 10 goles a 9 y una plaza en la final.

El equipo de Mohammed Al Habtoor comenzó con fuerza y se fue al descanso con una ventaja de 4-3, aunque a Bin Drai se le veía capaz de dar la vuelta a la tortilla. De hecho, Juan José Brané, echándose el equipo a la espalda, lo llevó a su primera ventaja (6–5), que a punto estuvo de ser definitiva: sólo un gol en el último segundo de Mohammed Al Habtoor lo impidió y envió el partido a la prórroga. En ella, y aunque ambos equipos lucharon con fiereza, fue Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario el que convirtió el penalty para Habtoor (7-6) que le daba una plaza en la final.

El sábado 16 de febrero, Habtoor y Abu Dhabi se citaron en las bien acondicionadas canchas del Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club para disputar la final. Abu Dhabi logró abrir el marcador, pero Habtoor, respondió con rapidez y consiguió irse al descanso con una ventaja de 3–2. Ninguno de los equipos consiguió imponer su dominio ni poner la suficiente tierra de por medio para respirar con tranquilidad durante los siguientes minutos, por lo que, tal y como se esperaba, el partido concluyó en empate y desembocó en una nueva prórroga, en la que esta vez sería Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario quien anotase el gol de oro para dar a Habtoor la victoria por 10–9 y el título de la Silver Cup.

En la segunda semifinal, Ghantoot y Abu Dhabi disputaron un partido igual de emocionante. Con el marcador empatado a cinco al final de la primera mitad, los dos equipos continuaron peleando en los chukkers siguientes, marcando a partes iguales. Justo después de que Juan José Storni anotase un gol para poner a Abu Dhabi en ventaja (9–8), con sólo 35 segundos para el final del partido, un penalty marcado por Facundo Sola para Ghantoot en el último suspiro puso de nuevo el empate (9–9) que llevaba también esta semifinal al tiempo extra.

The winning team was the most consistent

On Saturday, February 16th, Habtoor and Abu Dhabi met to play in final of the tournament. While Abu Dhabi opened the scoring, Habtoor responded quickly and finished the first chukka with a 3–2 lead. The score remained close throughout the entire game, and after a hard-fought fourth chukka for both teams, the match continued into extra time; however, is was Ezequiel Martinez Ferrario who scored the golden goal in the extra chukka to give Habtoor the 10–9 victory over Abu Dhabi and the title of the Silver Cup.

Habtoor and Bin Drai faced off in the first semi-final match. Mohammed Al Habtoor’s team got off to a strong start and went into halftime with a 4–3 lead, but Bin Drai was not ready to back down. Juan José Brané led the attack to give Bin Drai their first lead (6–5), only for a last-second goal by Mohammed Al Habtoor to send the game into an extra chukka. While both teams fought hard in the fifth chukka, Ezequiel Martinez Ferrario’s successfully converted penalty sealed the 7–6 victory for Habtoor, and ensured them the first spot in the final.

The second semi-final match saw Ghantoot and Abu Dhabi meet in an equally thrilling affair. With the score tied 5–5 going into halftime, both teams continued to fight throughout the remaining chukkas, with goals scored back-and-forth between the two sides. Just after Juan José Storni scored to give Abu Dhabi a 9–8 lead with only 35 seconds remaining on the clock, another penalty conversion by Ghantoot’s Facundo Sola tied the score 9–9 and sent the game into overtime. Storni then scored the only goal of the extra chukka to give Abu Dhabi the 10–9 lead and a ticket to the final.

Habtoor’s game-winning hero was also named Professional MVP, while Amateur MVP was awarded to Abu Dhabi´s Faris Al Yabhouni. Al Yabhouni’s mare, Overa, ridden by teammate Juan Ambroggio, was named BPP. Earlier in the day, Ghantoot overcame Bin Drai 6–5 to win the Subsidiary Final.

Joe Barry Cup: George Rawlings gana otra vez La Joe Barry Memorial Cup, uno de los torneos con más solera que se disputan en el International Polo Club, contó con una participación mucho mayor que la Herbie Pennell, con catorce equipos de 20 goles de hándicap. El hecho de que polistas de la talla de Facundo Pieres, Miguel Novillo Astrada, David Stirling, Carlos y Guillermo Gracida, Sebastián Merlos, Mariano Aguerre, Hilario Ulloa, Nicolás Pieres, Pablo Pieres o Francisco de Narváez fueran de la partida hacía presagiar un torneo fantástico. Las tres jornadas de la fase de grupos, con un total de 21 partidos, se extendió entre el 10 y el 20 de enero, y sirvió para decidir el nombre de los cuatro equipos que accederían a las semifinales. A pesar de la derrota en la primera jornada ante Orchard Hill (12-7), Audi, dirigido por Marc Ganzi, fue el primer equipo en avanzar a semifinales gracias a sus victorias sobre los eternos favoritos y defensores del título, Coca-Cola (17-11) y La Herradura (10-9). Audi, Zacara, Villa del Lago, y Crab Orchard fueron, por tanto, los cuatro equipos que avanzaron a semifinales con intención de convertirse en campeones, mientras Goose Creek, Lechuza Caracas, Valiente y La Herradura accedieron a las semifinales de la copa subsidiaria Bobby Barry. En la primera semifinal por el título, entre Audi y Villa del Lago la igualdad reinó hasta el quinto chukker; fue ahí cuando un gol de penalty de Nick Roldan puso a Audi por delante (8-7), para que poco después, Marc Ganzi sellase la victoria para su equipo con otro gol en el sexto (9-7) que les colocaba en la final del 25 de enero. Una final a la que le acompañaría Crab Orchard, que se impuso a Zacara por la mínima (12-11). La final arrancó con muchos parones, como demuestra que los cinco primeros goles llegaran de penalty. Sin embargo, el ritmo fue en aumento a partir de entonces. Audi peleó admirablemente hasta el final, pero terminaría siendo el equipo del patrón George Rawlings, Crab Orchard, el que se impondría (11-9) para hacerse con la victoria en la Joe Barry. Nick Roldan, con siete goles –todos de penalty–, y Nico Pieres hicieron los tantos de Audi, mientras Matías Magrini, Mariano Aguerre (ambos con cinco tantos) y Felipe Viana lograron los del ganador. The Joe Barry Memorial Cup, one of the most traditional tournaments to take place at the International Polo Club, featured a greater turnout than the Herbie Pennell, with 20-goal fourteen teams. The fact that high-caliber players such as Facundo Pieres, Miguel Novillo Astrada, David Stirling, Carlos and Guillermo Gracida, Sebastián Merlos, Mariano Aguerre, Hilario Ulloa, Nicolás Pieres, Pablo Pieres and Francisco de Narváez were on the line-ups was a sure indication that an exciting tournament would take place in Palm Beach.

In the first semifinal match of the Joe Barry Cup, there was no hint of a clear winner until the end of the fifth chukker, when a penalty goal by Nicolas Roldan gave Audi an 8–7 lead over Villa del Lago. Marc Ganzi sealed the victory with another goal in the sixth chukker, to end the game 9–7 and gave Audi a spot in the final that will take on Sunday, January 25th. Meanwhile, Crab Orchard also starred in a tough battle against Zacara, in which the former came out victorious with a score 12–11.

The three rounds of pool play, which held a total of 21 games played between January 10th and 20th, determined the four teams that would continue to the semifinal round. Despite a first round loss to Orchard Hill (12–7), Audi led by Marc Ganzi was the first team to advance to the semifinals thanks to their high-scoring victory against perennial favourites and defending champions Coca-Cola (17–11) and close nailbiting win against La Herradura (10–9). With marginal wins against Crab Orchard (12–11), Lechuza Caracas (13 OT–12), and ERG (11–10), undefeated Villa del Lago fought valiantly throughout pool play to advance to the semifinals. Zacara also finished three undefeated rounds of pool play, beating Piaget (14–10), Lucchese (9–8), and Valiente (12–11). After the close loss to Villa del Lago in the first round, Crab Orchard continued through the rest of the pool play with two decisive victories over Faraway (9–3) and Goose Creek (12–6) to secure a place in the semifinals.

The final game of the tournament got off to a slow start as all five goals of first chukker came from penalty shots. But soon enough the pace began to accelerate in the following chukkers. Audi continued to battle admirably, but it was Crab Orchard who would ultimately earn the 11–9 win to capture the 2013 Joe Barry Memorial Cup. Nick Roldan led all scoring with seven goals, all on penalty shots, as Nico Pieres scored twice to make it 9 in total for Audi. Crab Orchard got five goals apiece from Magrini and Aguerre. Felipe Viana scored a single goal for the 11-9 victory. Magrini was also awarded MVP. Earlier that day Valiente triumphed over La Herradura 12-9 to win the Bobby Barry Subsidiary Cup.

Ylvisaker Cup: Coca-Cola se consolida El 31 de enero se puso en marcha una nueva edición de la Ylvisaker Cup. Tras una primera fase a la que concurrieron 14 equipos y en la que se celebraron 21 partidos, Zacara y ERG lograron imponerse en sus tres compromisos, obteniendo así la clasificación para cuartos. Las otras plazas, sin embargo, no fueron tan nítidas. Con la victoria de Lucchese sobre Faraway y la derrota de Lechuza Caracas ante Audi en la tercera jornada, se produjo un triple empate que obligó a disputar una tanda de penaltis de la que saldría victorioso Audi, lo que le serviría para unirse a Lechuza Caracas, Lucchese, Coca-Cola, Villa del Lago y el defensor del título, Piaget como equipos clasificados.

Un minuto de silencio precedió a la final de la Ylvisaker Cup en memoria de José Ángel Pérez Calvario, el joven petisero fallecido el viernes anterior en un encuentro de la Whitney Cup tras recibir una patada de un caballo en el pecho. Los jugadores de Coca-Cola, sus petiseros y los árbitros portaron cintas negras en honor al joven de 29 años. La final entre Audi y Coca-Cola enfrentó a los dos máximos goleadores del torneo (Nick Roldán de Audi con 38 goles, y Julio Arellano de Coca-Cola, con 35) en la revancha de la semifinal de 2012, en el que Audi derrotó a Coca-Cola por 10-6. La final de este año fue un partido “de aquí para allá”, con ambos equipos alternándose en el marcador. Coca-Cola mantuvo su ventaja en el cuarto chukker (6-5) y quinto (8-7) justo antes de que Nick Roldán lograse el empate para Audi. Con el partido empatado a ocho goles, se llegó al chukker suplementario, en el que Julio Arellano anotó desde el punto de penalty para dar a Coca-Cola la victoria (9–8) y su segundo título de la temporada. Sugar Erskine fue nombrado MVP.

En el partido siguiente, Zacara, el equipo de Lyndon Lea, empezó con fuerza contra Coca-Cola con una ventaja de 7–5 antes de la segunda mitad, pero los goles de Julio Arellano (10 en el partido) y Sugar Erskine dio la plaza de semifinales a Coca-Cola (12-10). Lechuza Caracas accedió por su parte a las semifinales con un triunfo cómodo (10-7) ante ERG. En el último partido de los cuartos de final, Piaget cayó ante Lucchese por un ajustado partido que no pudo resolverse sino hasta el último chukker, en el que cuatro goles consecutivos de Lucchese apartaron del torneo a los vigentes campeones.

En la segunda semifinal, Lechuza Caracas y Coca-Cola se enfrentaron para determinar quién se enfrentaría a Audi en la final del domingo. Lechuza Caracas dominó a su oponente en la primera mitad (7–4 al descanso), pero CocaCola se recompuso y tomó control del partido (11-10) antes del chukker final. Los últimos siete minutos del partido fueron un monólogo de Gillian Johnston y Julio Arellano, quienes aseguraron la victoria para su equipo (16-11).

Thursday January 31st launched a new edition of the Ylvisaker Cup. After the first round of 21 games played by 14 teams, Zacara and ERG managed to remain undefeated and were the first two to qualify for the quarterfinals. However, the fate of the rest was not as cut-and-dry. With the victory of Lucchese against Faraway and the loss of Lechuza Caracas thanks to Audi at the end of the third day of qualifying, there was a three way tie which required a penalty shootout. The next morning Audi won the penalty shootout to put themselves at the top of their group and in the quarterfinals alongside Lechuza Caracas, Lucchese, Coca-Cola, Villa del Lago and defending champion, Piaget. After a bout of heavy rain delayed the next round of games for two days, the quarter-finals began on Sunday, February 17th with an exciting come-back victory for Audi against Villa del Lago (14–9). Villa del Lago had a 7–5 lead after three chukkers, but after 6 consecutive goals from Marc Ganzi’s team, there was no looking back for Audi. In the next game, Lyndon Lea’s Zacara started off strong against Coca-Cola with a 7-5 lead going into the second half. However, goals from Julio Arellano (10 total in the game) and Sugar Erskine ultimately ensured a spot for Coca-Cola in the semi-finals with a 12–10 win. On the other side, Lechuza Caracas advanced to the semi-finals with a comfortable 10–7 win over ERG. In the last game of the quarter-finals, Piaget fell to Lucchese 12–11 in a thriller that was only determined in the final seven minutes of play. Four consecutive goals from Lucchese shook Piaget’s defense and saw the defending champions take an early exit from the tournament.

The first semifinal game saw Audi come back from behind to beat John Muse’s Lucchese 17–13. Lucchese had the advantage going into half time with a 8–6 lead, but Marc Ganzi and his teammates fired up in the fourth chukker and never looked back. Lechuza Caracas and Coca-Cola faced each other in the second semifinal of the day to determine who would face Audi in the final on Sunday. Lechuza Caracas dominated Coca-Cola in the first half to enter the break with a 7–4 lead, however, CocaCola regained composure and took the lead (11–10) before the final chukker. The final seven minutes of the match saw Gillian Johnston and Julio Arellano secure the victory (16–11) and earn Coca-Cola a place in the final. A moment of silence preceded the final of the Ylvisaker Cup in memory of José Angel Pérez Calvario, a young Coca-Cola groomer who died last Friday during a meeting between Coca-Cola and Audi during the CV Whitney Cup after being kicked in the chest by a horse. The Coca-Cola players and their groomers, as well as the referees, wore black armbands to honor the 29 year-old. The final between Audi and Coca-Cola saw the tournament’s top scorers (Audi’s Nick Roldán with 38 goals and CocaCola’s Julio Arellano with 35) face off in a rematch of last year’s semifinal game, in which Audi had defeated Coca-Cola 10–6. The 2013 final was a constant back-and-forth between the two teams, with both teams fighting for the lead before halftime. Coca-Cola maintained their lead in the fourth (6–5) and fifth chukkers (8–7) before Nick Roldán was able to tie it up for Audi. With the game tied 8–8 entering overtime, Julio Arellano scored from the penalty spot to give Coca-Cola the 9–8 victory and second title of the season. Coca-Cola’s Sugar Erskine was awarded MVP.

La World Polo Cup on Snow tiene lugar sobre el lago helado de Saint Moritz / The World Polo Cup on Snow is played on a field built on the frozen surface of the lake Saint Moritz

A lo largo de 29 años, este torneo se ha celebrado en el magnífico entorno de los Alpes suizos, donde los partidos tienen lugar en una cancha de polo construida sobre la superficie de un lago congelado. Las condiciones atípicas de la nieve, la ubicación desafiante a 1.800 metros sobre el nivel del mar y el carácter sofisticado de St. Moritz convierten a este torneo en algo único. Fieles a esta cita anual, aproximadamente 15.000 espectadores de todo el mundo viajan hasta el lago de St. Moritz a finales de enero de cada año para presenciar las evoluciones de algunos de los jugadores más importantes del circuito, y disfrutar de la experiencia del Snow Polo. Mientras que el torneo de 2012 fue cancelado por primera vez en su historia debido al clima templado, que convertía en peligroso el desarrollo del juego en el lago, las temperaturas de este año, que llegaron a alcanzar los -12° C garantizaron su disputa. La tercera jornada, previa a la final, fue también muy emocionante, un día en el que Ralph Lauren se impondría a Sal. Oppenheim (6-5) y BMW rompería la racha de imbatido de Cartier gracias a una victoria (6-5) en la prórroga, que lo colocaba con dos victorias y que lo catapultó a la final, donde Cartier podría resarcirse de la reciente derrota. Así fue. Cartier salió a por todas, tanto, que el torneo pareció estar decantado al fin de la primera mitad ya que el equipo de Jonathan Munro Ford ganaba por 5-1 antes de finalizar el segundo chukker. Sin embargo, el equipo de Andreas Knapp Voith consiguió recortar distancias y poner un 5-4 en el cuarto chukker gracias a un buen trabajo conjunto, que dio emoción hasta el final pero que, a la postre, resultaría insuficiente para los de la marca de automoción bávara, permitiendo que la World Polo Cup on Snow 2013 fue a parar definitivamente a Cartier. Chris Hyde (Cartier) fue nombrado MVP, mientras que el BPP fue a parar a Leyenda, propiedad de Andreas Knapp Voith, y montado por Bautista Ortiz de Urbina (BMW). Ralph Lauren se impuso por su parte a Sal. Oppenheimer (4-3) en el partido por el tercer puesto, lo que le valió a Richard Davis, patrón de Sal. Oppenheimer, para recibir el MVP Amateur.

For 29 years the competition has been held against the gorgeous backdrop of the Swiss Alps, where games are played on a polo field built on the frozen surface of the lake. The atypical conditions on snow, the challenging location at 1,800 metres above sea level and the sophisticated character of St. Moritz make the tournament truly unique. Along with the most elite players and horses, approximately 15,000 spectators from all over the world make the trip to Lake St. Moritz at the end of January each year. While the 2012 competition was called off for the first time in its history due to mild weather, temperatures as low as -12° C ensured that this year’s games would commence.

After the first half of the final showdown, it seemed as though the tournament was all but won, as Jonathan Munro Ford’s Cartier gained a (5–1) lead over BMW before the end of the second chukker. But the team of Andreas Knapp Voith was not ready to back down, and cut the margin to (5–4) in the fourth chukker with determined teamwork. No more goals were to be scored however, and in the end it was Cartierwho maintained the victory to win the 2013 World Polo Cup on Snow. Chris Hyde of Cartier was named MVP Pro, and BPP was awarded to Andreas Knapp Voith’s Leyenda, played by BMW’s Bautista Ortiz de Urbina. Earlier that day Michael Bickford’s Ralph Lauren beat Sal. Oppenheimer (4–3) to capture 3rd place, but it was team leader Richard Davis of Sal. Oppenheimer who received the honor of Amateur MVP.

From January 24th to the 27th BMW, Cartier, Ralph Lauren and Sal. Oppenheim were the four teams that competed in this year’s edition of the Cup, each team with an 18 goal handicap. BMW and Cartier started the tournament strong, as both teams secured close wins in the opening games against Ralph Lauren (7–6) and Sal. Oppenheim (6–5), respectively. The second round saw Sal. Oppenheim gain their first victory of the competition with a (5–4) win against BMW, and Cartier record their second straight win over Ralph Lauren (5–4). The final round of group play was full of non-stop action as Ralph Lauren won their first game against Sal. Oppenheim (6–5) and BMW broke Cartier’s undefeated streak with a (6–5) win in the extra chukker. BMW’s victory that day sent them to the final, in which they would play a rematch against Cartier.

Santa María Polo Club, sin lugar a dudas el club de polo más importante de nuestro país, nos presenta una vez más su Temporada de Primavera, compuesta por el Memorial José Ignacio Domecq y el Memorial Conde de Guaqui.

La Temporada de Primavera de 2013 trae de nuevo a Sotogrande el mejor polo, en lo que será el perfecto anticipo de lo que llegará en Verano con la disputa del 42º Torneo Internacional de Polo. A diferencia de la edición de 2012, los torneos de la Temporada de Primavera se celebrarán en orden inverso al año pasado.

Así, el XXXIV Memorial José Ignacio Domecq se disputará en primer lugar, los días 23, 24, 27, 28, 30 y 31 de marzo, mientras que el XI Memorial Conde de Guaqui tendrá lugar los días 5, 6 y 7 de abril. Como siempre, estos clásicos de nuestro polo contarán con algunos de los mejores polistas nacionales, así como jugadores de Inglaterra, Irlanda, o Argentina, entre otros países.

En honor a personas ilustres del polo andaluz Los torneos de la Temporada de Primavera llevan el nombre de personas fuertemente vinculadas al polo y a esta privilegiada urbanización gaditana que es Sotogrande. Así, el Memorial Conde de Guaqui se celebra en memoria de D. Alfredo de Goyeneche y Moreno, Conde de Guaqui y Marqués de Artasona, que fue un consumado jinete; el Memorial José Ignacio Domecq, por su parte, se celebra en honor de D. José Ignacio Domecq González, reconocido bodeguero y polista andaluz, que llegó a tener 5 goles

de hándicap. Santa María Polo Club rinde homenaje de esta manera a estas dos personalidades, casi leyendas, tan vinculadas al caballo, al polo y a Andalucía.

Santa Maria Polo Club, undoubtedly the most important polo club in our country presents once again the Spring Season, composed by Jose Ignacio Domecq and Conde de Guaqui Memorials. The 2013 Spring Season brings back the best polo to Sotogrande, in what will be the perfect preview of what will come in the summer with the dispute of the 42nd International Polo Tournament. Unlike the 2012 edition, the tournaments of the Spring Season will take place in reverse order. Thus, the Memorial XXXIV Jose Ignacio Domecq Memorial will be played on the first place, days 23rd, 24th, 27th, 28th, 30th and 31st March, while the XI Conde de Guaqui Memorial will be held on 5th, 6th and 7th April. As usual, these classics of the spanish polo season will attract some of the best national polo players and other players from England, Ireland, Belgium and Argentina, among other countries.

La décima edición del Memorial Conde de Guaqui, tras una emocionante fase clasificatoria, vio cómo Dos Lunas, equipo integrado por Paul Netzsch, Martín Iturraspe y Luis e Ignacio Domecq, y Bayswater London Gin (Pablo Mora, Ricardo Trujillo, Tomás Fernández-Llorente y Gabriel Aguirre) alcanzaban una final en la que terminarían imponiéndose los primeros por un cómodo 10 a 6 ½. Respecto a la Copa Subsidiaria, fue a parar al equipo Sílex, que se impuso a San Enrique por un ajustado 7 a 6.

Dos Lunas and Scapa-Los Dragones, winners in 2012 A total of six teams participated in last year’s edition, in which competed, divided into six teams, players as Tomas Fernandez-Llorente (7), Alejo Taranco (6), Manuel Crespo (7), Santiago Cernadas (6) and Ignacio Gonzalez (6), and real polo references in Sotogrande, as Ignacio Domecq (3), Gabriel Aguirre (1) or Michael Redding (1), among others. The tenth edition of the Conde de Guaqui Memorial, after an exciting qualifying, saw Dos Lunas, team composed by Paul Netzsch, Martin Iturraspe, Ignacio Domecq and Luis Domecq, and Bayswater London Gin (Pablo Mora, Ricardo Trujillo, Tomas Fernandez-Llorente and Gabriel Aguirre) reached a final in which the first end up being winners by a comfortable 10-6½. La Manga Club, uno de los más exclusivos campos de España, vuelve a acoger la gran final del evento de golf para mujeres más importante. El equipo de Reino Unido vuelve a alzarse con el trofeo por segundo año consecutivo. / La Manga Club, one of the most exclusive clubs of Spain, once again hosted the final of the most important women’s golf event. The UK team returns to claim the trophy for the second consecutive year.

El Ladies Golf Cup es uno de los torneos de golf femenino más importantes a nivel amateur. Nacido en 1998 con España y Portugal como principales anfitriones, la gran final de la edición de 2013 se ha visto complementada con la participación de Reino Unido y Tailandia. A lo largo de dos jornadas que se celebraron en La Manga Club, las jugadoras tuvieron ocasión de competir en los exclusivos campos Norte y Sur del resort murciano. Los equipos finalistas, compuestos en orden de puntuación a partir de los eventos realizados a lo largo del año en sus respectivos países, pudieron disfrutar de las instalaciones de uno de los mejores campos españoles. Además de los importantes apoyos que recibe el evento en cada competición

local, en esta ocasión se contó con partners de gran valor que aportaron atractivo durante todo el fin de semana. Una cena de bienvenida sirvió como toma de contacto entre los diferentes equipos, así como una excusa perfecta para la presentación de las capitanas de cada equipo y las jugadoras. También se aprovechó para la realización del sorteo para la primera jornada de competición, donde quedarían dispuestos todos los emparejamientos que darían comienzo nada más comenzar el día siguiente. En esta ocasión, la modalidad de competición fue Stableford individual hándicap en ambas jornadas. Al finalizar cada partida, la jugadora con mejor índice obtenía para su país 3 puntos, la segunda mejor 2 y la tercera 1 punto.

The Ladies Golf Cup is one of the most important women’s golf tournaments at the amateur level. Inaugurated in 1998 with Spain and Portugal as the main hosts, this year the 2013 edition of the Cup Final was complete with the participation of the United Kingdom and Thailand.

Over the course of two rounds that took place in La Manga Club, the players were able to compete on the exclusive north and south golf courses of the Murcia resort.

A welcome dinner served as get-together between the different teams, as well as a perfect opportunity for the presentation of the captains and the players of each team. The event was also used for the draw for the first day of competition, where all pairings would be willing to start at the very beginning the following day.

The finalists, in order of compounded score (based on the results of events held throughout the year in their respective countries), were able to enjoy the facilities of one of the best courses in Spain. La primera jornada, desarrollada en el Campo Norte de La Manga, supuso un desafío para todas las participantes. A lo largo de todo el terreno se extienden palmeras, lagos y ‘barrancos’ naturales que dotan a este campo de una indudable belleza natural, no exento de cierta dificultad. Tras una breve toma de contacto con sus nuevas compañeras de equipo y con el entorno, comenzaron a verse los primeros síntomas de buena compatibilidad entre las jugadoras, más allá de la competición.

El Campo Sur fue el elegido para la segunda ronda en la que, tras una disputadísima competición, finalmente el equipo inglés se alzó por tercer año consecutivo como campeón de la Final Internacional del Ladies Golf Cup, seguido muy de cerca por Tailandia en segundo lugar por una ajustada diferencia de 4 puntos. En esta última jornada destacaron Pilar Vela de España con 38 puntos y Ann Hynes que, como ganadora de la bola más cerca de bandera en el hoyo 12, se llevó unos pendientes de Pandora.

Mucho más que golf Más allá de los cuatro días de emocionante competición, la Final Internacional del Ladies Golf Cup es una experiencia única en la que jugadoras de distintos países conviven en un ambiente distendido y de amistad.

Al finalizar esta primera ronda, Reino Unido se posicionaba en cabeza con 9 puntos, seguido de Tailandia con 8, Portugal con 5 y España con 2. Destacaron las actuaciones de Chloe Rogers del equipo inglés y de la portuguesa Maria Manuela Carlos, ambas con 31 puntos; siguiéndolas de cerca se encontraban la también inglesa Ann Hynes y, por parte de Tailandia, Laksana Snaeha, que consiguieron ambas 29 puntos.

The first round, played on the North Course of La Manga, was a challenge for all participants. Palm trees, lakes and natural “gorges” throughout the course provided a backdrop of undeniable natural beauty, but not without a degree of difficulty for the players. After a brief gathering with their new teammates and the environment, there began to be the first signs of good atmosphere beyond the competition. At the end of this first round, the UK was ahead of the competition with 9 points, followed by Thailand with 8, Portugal with 5 and Spain with 2. Highlights included the performances of England’s Chloe Rogers and Portugal’s Maria Manuela Carlos, both with 31 points; close behind them on the score sheet were England’s Ann Hynes and Thailand’s Laksana Snaeha, both of whom managed to earn 29 points.

Victory for the United Kingdom The South Course was chosen for the second round in which, after a hotly contested competition, the English finally rose above the competition for the third consecutive year as champions of the International Final of the Ladies Golf Cup, closely followed by Thailand in second place with an adjusted difference of 4 points. Impressive performances in the last round of the tournament included the 38 points earned by Spain’s Pillar Vela, and that of Ann Hynes, who won the illustrious Pandora earrings after her ball was the closest to the 12th-hole flag.

Hace ahora 45 años que apareció el primer Jaguar XJ. Desde aquel lejano 1968 -el año de la primavera de Praga, el mayo francés y el triunfo de Massiel en Eurovisión- el mundo ha cambiado mucho y también el XJ ha evolucionado, pero la berlina de lujo de Jaguar conserva el encanto, estilo y glamour genuinamente británicos. Un coche diferente que se disfruta desde el asiento trasero… y también cuando se conduce.

Cómodo, elegante, con sabor a madera noble y fino cuero, ideal para viajar en el asiento trasero, pero lo bastante rápido y ágil como para disfrutar al volante. El XJ de 1968, con bastidor de acero y motores de 6 cilindros en línea de 2.8 y 4.2 litros ya era así. Eran tiempos en que la industria británica del automóvil aún hacía frente a la alemana, sobre todo en el campo de las berlinas de representación. Y Jaguar era una de las marcas más orgullosas del imperio. Tanto, que el XJ mantuvo su figura casi sin cambios durante más de 40 años. Eso sí, en 2003 hubo una serie de cambios muy importantes, al incorporar bastidor y carrocería de aluminio así como suspensiones neumáticas controladas electrónicamente. De ese modo, el XJ se convirtió en la berlina de lujo más ligera del mercado y, probablemente, la de comportamiento más ágil. Esta fue la primera generación de XJ que pude disfrutar al volante y no como simple pasajero. En cualquiera de los asientos, el XJ siempre me pareció diferente, nada que ver con un Audi A8, un BMW Serie 7 o un Mercedes Clase S.

La gran revolución estética llegó a finales de 2009, con un profundo cambio de diseño obra de Ian Callum. Por dentro, el XJ dejó de ser estrecho y angosto para rivalizar en habitabilidad con los mejores de su clase, sobre todo en su versión de batalla alargada LWB (Long Wheel Base). Y, aunque nostálgicos y puristas aún echan de menos el peculiar J-Gate de la palanca, el cambio pasó a manejarse mediante la ruleta estrenada en el XF y las levas en el volante. Las dos últimas novedades del XJ son el motor 3.0 V6 sobrealimentado de 340 CV y el cambio ZF de ocho velocidades que lleva el protagonista de estas páginas. Un motor que ha venido a sustituir al 5.0 V8 de 385 CV y que, a pesar de ser menos potente, presenta una serie de indudables ventajas, porque las prestaciones son muy similares, pero el consumo es considerablemente más bajo. Una de las razones para lograr este rendimiento superior está en la presencia de un sistema stop&start que apaga el motor cuando nos detenemos en un semáforo, por ejemplo.

The first Jaguar XJ appeared 45 years ago. From that distant 1968—the year of the Prague Spring, the May protests in France and Massiel’s Eurovision victory—the world has changed and the XJ has also evolved, but the Jaguar luxury sedan retains its genuinely British charm, style and glamour. It is a distinct automobile that can be enjoyed from the back seat ... as well as from behind the wheel.

The great aesthetic revolution came in late 2009, with a profound change in design by Ian Callum. Inside, the XJ was no longer straight and narrow to compete in livability with best in its class, especially in its version of the long wheelbase (LWB). And although nostalgic-types and purists still miss the unique J-Gate of the lever, the stick shift started to be handled through the part released in the XF and the steering wheel paddles. The two latest versions of the XJ are the 3.0 V6 supercharged engine with 340 CV and the eight-speed ZF, which is the main focus of these next pages. The eight-speed ZF boasts a new engine to replace the 5.0 V8 of 385 CV and, despite being less powerful, has a number of clear advantages; the benefits are very similar, but the gas consumption is considerably lower. One benefit of its superior performance is achieved through the presence of a stopand-start system, which shuts off the engine when stopped at a traffic light, for example.

However, in 2003 there were a number of significant changes, including the incorporation of an aluminum frame and body, along with electronically controlled air suspension. Thus, the XJ became the lightest luxury sedan in the market, as well as the most agile. This was the first generation of the XJ that I could enjoy at the wheel, not just as a mere passenger. In any of the seats, the XJ always seemed different to me, nothing like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class.

Comfortable, elegant, noble hardwood and fine leather aroma, the XJ is ideal for traveling in the back seat, but is also quick and agile to enjoy while driving. The 1968 XJ already featured a steel frame and an inline 6-cylinder engine of 2.8 and 4.2 liters. It was a time when the British automobile industry still faced German competition, especially in the field of luxury sedans. Jaguar was one of the empire’s proudest brands, so much so that the XJ kept its well-known figure almost unchanged for over 40 years.

Gracias al compresor Roots de doble vórtice su respuesta es progresiva y lo bastante contundente como para no echar de menos los 45 CV extras del V8 atmosférico. También demuestra mayor personalidad que el exquisito y ultrasuave 3.0 V6 Diesel de 275 CV –personalmente, siguen sin convencerme los motores de gasóleo en este tipo de berlinas de grandes dimensiones–, del mismo modo que no tiene el impresionante empuje del 5.0 V8 S/C de 510 CV que culmina la gama. Pero si me preguntan qué motor me parece el más equilibrado para el XJ, diré que me quedo con este nuevo 3.0 V6 S/C. Además, el matrimonio que hace con el cambio ZF de ocho velocidades me parece perfecto, porque se conjugan suavidad, rapidez de funcionamiento y eficiencia. Además, aunque no es nuestro caso, el XJ 3.0 V6 S/C puede tener el nuevo sistema de tracción total de Jaguar, una opción a tener en

cuenta si nos movemos habitualmente por carreteras con firme deslizante. Y, otro dato más sobre este nuevo motor: el 3.0 V6 S/C de 340 CV será el escalón de acceso del nuevo deportivo de Jaguar, el espectacular F-Type, del que espero poder hablar en breve desde estas mismas páginas. Suavidad, tacto exquisito, esmerado cuidado en los detalles de acabado, materiales de primera y prestaciones suficientes. El XJ siempre fue así y lo sigue siendo. Incluso cuando jugamos con los distintos modos de conducción (winter, normal y dynamics) que modifican no sólo la respuesta del motor, cambio, suspensión y dirección, sino también el aspecto del salpicadero (azul, negro, rojo, respectivamente). Los tiempos cambian y la tecnología evoluciona, pero el estilo, el lujo, la tradición y la elegancia británica permanecen.

Thanks to the double-vortex Roots supercharger, the XJ’s response is advanced and strong enough to not need the extra 45 CV of the V8. It also shows more personality than the exquisite and ultra-smooth 3.0 V6 Diesel 275 CV,—personally, I remain dubious of diesel engines in such large sedans—and the thrust is not as impressive as the 5.0 V8 S / C of 510 CV that completes the range. But if you ask me which engine seems the most balanced for the XJ, I’ll stick with this new 3.0 V6 S / C. Moreover, its marriage with the eight-speed ZF seems perfect to me, because it combines smoothness, speed of operation and efficiency. Furthermore, although it is not our case, the XJ 3.0 V6 S / C can have the new total traction system from Jaguar, an option to keep

in mind for regular driving on slippery roads. And another fact about this new engine: the 3.0 V6 S / C of 340 CV will be the first step of the new sports car, the spectacular F-Type, which I hope to talk about briefly in these pages. The XJ always was and still is characterized by smoothness, exquisite tact, meticulous attention to finishing details, premium materials and adequate benefits, even when we played with the different driving modes (winter, normal and dynamic) that modify not only the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering, but also the appearance of the dashboard (blue, black, and red, respectively). Times change and technology evolves, but the British style, luxury, tradition and elegance remain. La cantante de Barbados prosigue su exitosa carrera en el que es ya su séptimo disco de estudio. Mezclando géneros como el pop, electrónica, y dubstep, Rihanna ha sabido hacerse un hueco en las listas de éxitos de todo el mundo. “Diamonds”, sencillo con el que dio a conocer el disco, ha sido nombrada recientemente como una de las canciones más inspiradoras para hacer deporte. La formación regresa a España tras una gira por Australia, donde han conseguido triunfar entre la crítica y público. Surfrock fronterizo instrumental para bailar y disfrutar.

Después de más de tres décadas de producción musical, la banda estadounidense sigue fabricando obras de arte. Las guitarras marca de la casa y las dulces melodías hacen de “Fade” una obra apta para paladares exquisitos. La diferencia con otros proyectos de Yo La Tengo es que juegan sobre seguro y tienen una discografía impresionante. The difference with Yo La Tengo’s other projects is playing it safe and they have an impressive discography. “Well You Better” returns to the roots of popular music, while other themes are found closer to chamber pop. Big hits seem to come naturally to Yo La Tengo. They will carry on for many years to come.

Alicia Keys puede afirmar que está alcanzando su madurez, tanto a nivel personal como profesional. Haciéndose cargo de su dirección artística y con mucha más capacidad de decisión que en anteriores etapas de su carrera, Keys ha dado un lavado de cara a su imagen, sobre todo musical. La primera parte del disco es un cúmulo de nuevas experiencias y de exploración de nuevos sonidos. La segunda, más acorde a anteriores trabajos, está ocupada por baladas que recuperan su faceta más sentimental. “Girl on fire” es la mezcla de las inspiraciones que Alicia Keys ha encontrado a lo largo de sus viajes por el mundo. Muy personal y sincero.

En el álbum en directo que ha grabado en el Teatro Real de Madrid, uno de nuestros artistas más reconocidos, Miguel Poveda demuestra por qué es seguramente la figura con más proyección internacional dentro del mundo del flamenco. Sus influencias y su trabajada producción lo convierten, por tanto, en un álbum digno de escuchar con detalle.

Existe un antes y un después en la carrera de Benjamin Biolay después de “Trash Yeyé” y “La Superbe”. Es casi indiscutible las cotas de supremacía musical que llegó a alcanzar con dos obras tan eclécticas como necesarias para la nueva chanson. El francés nunca aburre, juega con las producciones mientras va dosificando joyas. Con la personalidad propia del autor que no deja nada al azar, melodías y arreglos que permiten no aburrise nunca.
