Il est né à Malaga, en Andalousie, mais c’est en France, à Mougins, qu’il s’est éteint, voici tout juste quarante ans, le 8 avril 1973. La Côte d’Azur lui rend un hommage vibrant à travers plusieurs expositions. Suivez le guide, un certain Pablo Picasso lui-même, au fil de ses séjours dans la région. Picasso was born in the Andalusian city of Malaga, but it was in the French town of Mougins that he left this world almost forty years ago to the day on 8 April 1973. The Côte d’Azur is paying a vibrant tribute to the artist through a range of special exhibitions. Follow our guide, himself a certain Pablo Picasso, as he travels through the region.

Even as a child, little Pablo showed signs of a precocious talent, some saying he had a real gift. Far from reining him in, his parents did all that they could to see his talent flourish. He attended several art schools before setting off with his family first for Barcelona, and then to Madrid. He was admitted to the prestigious Academia de San Fernando but health problems forced him to end his study of art and to become a designer. He was only 20 years old when his work was exhibited for the first time in the “Els Quatre Gats” café. That same year – we are now in 1900 – Picasso travelled to Paris and discovered a Montmartre that was brimming with artistic energy. His return to Spain was short-lived, and 1901 saw him once again in the French capital. Until 1904, he divided his time between his home country and his adopted one, a time that would later be known as his “blue period”.

Ses parents, loin de le brider, vont, au contraire tout faire pour que leur fils développe ses qualités exceptionnelles. Il fréquentera plusieurs écoles d’art puis partira, avec sa famille, à Barcelone d’abord, à Madrid ensuite. Il intègre la très réputée Academia de San Fernando mais, suite à des ennuis de santé, il mettra un terme à ses études artistiques et deviendra graphiste. Il n’a pas 20 ans lorsqu’il expose pour la première fois, dans le cabaret bohème de « Els Quatre Gats ». La même année – nous sommes en 1900 –, Picasso est venu à Paris et il a découvert Montmartre et son effervescence artistique. Son retour en Espagne sera de courte durée et 1901 le voit de nouveau rejoindre la capitale française. Jusqu’en 1904, il se partagera entre son pays natal et celui d’adoption, laissant à la postérité ce que l’on appelle « sa période bleue ».
