CLUJ-NAPOCA: TRACES OF TIME The greatest king of Hungary was Matthias Corvinus. And it was in Cluj, on 23 February 1443, that the man was born. So it makes sense to start an exploration of the city on Piata Unirii square, at the foot of the immense bronze and stone monument depicting him, victorious, astride his horse. Just behind him rises the beautiful Gothic church of Saint Michael. In the 14th century, those who helped financed its construction were forgiven for their sins. A few steps away, the Pharmacy History Collection beckons, set inside the house where Cluj’s first apothecary began doing business in 1573. Today, you can see surprising potions of eras gone by displayed in jars: ground precious stones or powdered coral and crayfish eyes.
PRISON PERCH If you truly want to understand how the rural residents of Transylvania lived, there’s nothing better than the superb Museum of Ethnography. It can only be called ubiquitous, displaying 50,000 objects in the Palatul Redutei building downtown, not to mention its open-air National Ethnographic Park in the Hoia Forest northwest of the city, exhibiting traditional farms and wooden churches. To continue this accelerated immersion in Cluj’s history, you can climb the steps to the top of Cetatuia Hill, home to a fortress that long served as a prison. Now this lofty perch is simply the ideal location for taking your most beautiful photos of Cluj.
