ABSTRACT Cell signaling is a conserved and inherent mechanism in all the functions carried out by the cell, which allows its interaction with the surrounding microenvironment. The advance in the understanding of this essential process is largely due to the progress of molecular biology, the generation of new bioinformatics tools and the identification of both, the human genome and other organisms. Recently, new concepts have been described to help in a better understanding on the cell signaling mechanisms; likewise, some paradigms have been discarded in relation to this topic. Due the vast knowledge on cell signaling, the present review is focused on communication processes of multicellular organisms, where it is intended to mention key points that will allow understanding how this process operates, and some concepts established in the last decades. Keywords: Cell Biology, Cell Signaling, Ligand, Receptors, Intercellular Communication, Receptor Tyrosine Kinases, G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Intrinsically Disordered Proteins
