OPERA + OMAHA
Omaha Is Exceptional:
“We Take Care of One Another.”
There are no two ways about it: Omaha is an exceptional place to live, work, play, and give. We are a top 3% national leader in giving per capita, and that is evident in the way we support our local nonprofits. As Donna Kush, president and CEO of the Omaha Community Foundation (OCF), said in an interview with Omaha Magazine, “We take care of one another. That’s the heart of Omaha philanthropy.”
And what a collective beating heart it is!
This special edition of Omaha Magazine’s “Big Give” issue features a compendium of local organizations deeply worthy of community focus. No matter the interest close to your heart, there is a charity in these pages that will resonate with you, spark your interest, and engender your support. We provide background information, mission statements, wish lists, and event schedules, all of which take the work out of vetting charities. Whether you choose to give a financial donation or volunteer your time, there is a way to support the causes you care about. Use this issue for the next 12 months to guide you and your preferred mode of giving. We’ve even added QR codes for each nonprofit so you can access an organization’s website quickly and easily.
You can also read in-depth profiles about organizations, businesses, and volunteers who are all working to uplift fellow residents. Whether it’s Ronco Construction’s bright pink chariot (aka the “Barbie Car”), the Omaha Community Foundation’s work with local organizations, UNO’s Chi Omega sorority sisters fundrasing for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, or Durham Museum docent volunteer Dennis Hynes, there is a story here that will inspire readers to take action, no matter the form that may take.
We are so proud to introduce this special issue of the “Big Give,” and we hope you will be as inspired as we have been learning about all the organizations that work tirelessly to make Omaha uniquely exceptional.
Sincerely,
Kim Carpenter Editor-in-Chief,

BACKGROUND
Founded in 1895, the Aksarben Foundation has convened leaders dedicated to Nebraska’s prosperity for nearly 130 years. Through scholarships, internships, community grants, recognition of our agricultural heritage, and hard-working Nebraska farm families, everything Aksarben undertakes is directly related to developing, attracting, and retaining top talent in Nebraska. The annual Aksarben Ball celebrates the volunteerism and philanthropy of Nebraska families while also raising funds for Aksarben Scholarships and related programs.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Support of the Aksarben Foundation makes the Aksarben Scholarships and Initiatives possible. Each year, over $1 million is awarded in scholarships to hard-working Nebraska and Western Iowa students so that they may attend the college or university of their choice in Nebraska. We are working to expose these students to high-wage, high-skill, highdemand career fields that largely focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. By keeping our young people in Nebraska to continue their education and exposing each student to meaningful internship opportunities, we stand a better chance of retaining these individuals post-graduation to live, work, and start businesses–growing our state’s economy and workforce.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
We believe a healing journey can begin with just a simple conversation or a kind gesture and that HOPE is an anchor for the soul. ARCK was established to bring awareness, connection, and validation regarding the importance of SELF-CARE to individuals whose job requires them to give so much of themselves—their time, energy, and compassion—to other people in challenging and emotionally-filled circumstances on a daily basis.
ARCK focuses on providing outreach information and resources to professional community caregivers—teachers, first responders, health professionals, social workers, and more—by connecting them to wellness programs and healings arts services in the area.
Finding the right resources can help ease the stress inherent in these invaluable yet often physically and mentally taxing careers. By focusing our attention on these dedicated professionals–who are our friends, neighbors, and family members–the entire community grows healthier, stronger, and more resilient at facing life’s unexpected challenges.
A key aspect of ARCK’s mission is to provide community outreach opportunities.
The following are some ways you help support the mission of our non-profit:
• Nominate a professional services group of 50 or fewer employees or a volunteer fire department to receive a delivery of bagels and beverages as an act of random kindness. This small act of hospitality brings a great amount of joy and is a wonderful way to thank these giving and exceptional individuals.
• As a professional community caregiver, take time to explore and discover some different or interesting ideas for your much-needed self-care. Included on this page is a small list of self-care resources. Please visit our website thearck.org for more information or email plantingseedsofstrength@outlook.com.
Online donations are always appreciated! Give encouragement to your professional community caregivers today!

BACKGROUND
When Father Edward J. Flanagan purchased Overlook Farm in 1921, it became the new, permanent site of Boys Town. Over the decades that followed, schools, churches, a hospital, research centers, and homes were built, and tens of thousands of young lives have been transformed. At Boys Town, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. Today, Boys Town has multiple successful research-based programs, all recognizing that every child is an individual with unique needs. The care provided is effective because it is driven by the belief that every child and family have the potential to heal and build a better future. When Boys Town saves a child, the positive effects make society a better place for all.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Boys Town kids are everywhere. They are teachers, parents, engineers, and artists. Given a second chance, help, and healing, they have triumphed to become valued members and leaders of our communities. They, along with donors, are central to spreading the word about the amazing work Boys Town does every day—and has been doing for more than 100 years. Abused, abandoned, and neglected children deserve kindness, stability, and the opportunity for another chance to heal and grow. Broken families require time, resources, and support to heal and reunite. For these children and families, people are encouraged to make a tax-deductible donation to Boys Town. Every dollar of your donation will go toward our youth and family services.

Ronco Constr uction Gets Creative with Fundraising
RStory by Cl audia Moomey
Photography by Bill Sitzmann
Design by Rac hel Birdsall
onco Construction has partnered with Chariots4Hope by utilizing their own unmistakable chariot: a Honda Odyssey wrapped in bright, blazing pink.
The pastel vehicle, cheekily dubbed the “Barbie car,” was the brainchild of Ronco President, Zak Olsen, who initially conceived of it as a fun way to tease the company golfer with the worst score. He shared, “I was watching TV with my daughter, who at the time was 7 years old, and a preview for the “Barbie” movie came up. A light bulb went off. I thought, ‘What if we get an old car, fix it up, and wrap it like the Barbie car, and the loser has to drive that for a period of time?’ Everybody who was in the text loop immediately jumped on that and said, ‘Yep! That’s the winner; let’s go with that.’”
Ronco Construction chief operating officer, Mike Langford, was the first driver behind the wheel of the Barbie car as punishment for losing the golf wager. After garnering significant attention at the company’s holiday party in 2023, Ronco decided to transform the penance into something worthier: fundraising.
What started as a friendly wager between coworkers at a golf tournament therefore blossomed into a philanthropic effort to give back to the community—something Ronco Construction highly values, as demonstrated by their philanthropic arm, Ronco Gives, which has provided $1 million in support over the years to organizations such as the American Red Cross, Autism Action Partnership, Foodbank for the Heartland, OneWorld Community Health Centers, Inc., and Open Door Mission, a mong others.
This year, Ronco is using the Barbie car to raise awareness and funds for Chariots4Hope, a non-profit organization that “supports low-income families and individuals to maintain self-sufficiency through reliable transportation.” Dedicated to removing transportation barriers, Chariots4Hope offers four services: the RIDE Program, the Vehicle Ownership Program, Transportation Grants, and the SafeRoute Program.
“Initially it was humiliation, but it was a lot of fun when we turned it from penance to philanthropic,” sa id Langford.
The unusual vehicle generates buzz wherever it makes an appearance, with people eager to snap photos at gas stations and even in motion. “I really enjoyed the pointing, laughing, drive-by, the photos,” Langford shared. “Watching people take photos at 70 miles an hour is risky, but we appreciate the buzz and excitement.”
Now, employees take turns driving the car to job sites, going out to lunch, and any other opportunity to get the word out. “We want the car to be out on the road as much as possible,” said Olsen. “The entire organization is really helping out by taking their turns and getting the car out on the road so that it can be seen…it’s growing beyond what any of us ever thought it was going to do, so it’s a lot of fun.”
The pink chariot will retire after 2024, but Ronco Gives will continue in perpetuity.
“We’ll find a new fun idea and organization for next year,” Olsen said. “In the end, we’re just a catalyst of a couple guys making a stupid golf bet that turned into something brilliant.”

Access to opportunities is not distributed equally across our community. Many have limited access to nutritious food, mental health services, and/or experiences that broaden the mind and spark the imagination. The programs provided by Completely KIDS break down those barriers and provide equal access for all.
Completely KIDS offers many ways to get involved through time or financial contributions. Your time, talents, and dollars support the important work they do for the KIDS and families in our community every day. They are grateful for all the support, grants, and gifts they receive as well as volunteer contributions. There are always more KIDS and families in Omaha who need Completely KIDS’ help. The organization can’t do it without the backing of donors and volunteers–people just like you. BACKGROUND
Half of all Deaf children in poverty do not know sign language, which would be their only way to communicate with anyone. The cultural misconception in developing countries is that Deaf children are incapable of learning; therefore, they are deprived of the right to an education and are often cast out of their homes and isolated from their communities. We know Deaf children are intelligent and capable. Being taught sign language opens doors for them to lead a complete and fulfilling life and to learn the Gospel. Through Deaf Child Sponsorships, we currently serve Deaf children in 11 countries. DCH gives these children the dream of a different life—one worth living. With your help, we make those dreams reality.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Deaf Child Sponsorships help provide basic needs like food, water, clothing, shelter, and opportunities from education to vocation, allowing Deaf children to translate their dreams into reality.
Deaf Teacher Sponsorships support the dedicated educators who work tirelessly to serve these Deaf children, despite the challenges they face.
Propeller Campaign donations will help propel us forward so we can uplift even MORE Deaf children living in poverty; with your help, we can reach thousands of Deaf children instead of hundreds. There are currently 25 million Deaf children living in poverty. Our vision is to provide hope to millions of Deaf children in poverty through our organization’s efforts.

BACKGROUND
Amber Richardson, Founder and Executive Director, and her husband have been foster and adoptive parents for 17 years in the Omaha community. The first child they fostered arrived with a single trash bag containing a few worn-out clothes and a handful of plastic easter eggs considered to be his toys. They were shocked, but they learned over the years that this story was not unique. From their experiences, they have identified a critical need for quality clothing for children in foster care—clothing without holes, stains, or damage. Thus, Foster Love was born in 2020. Foster Love serves children and families impacted by foster care through the Foster Love Boutique, our Artsy Kids program, our Mobile Studio, and large events.

maha was built on a deep commitment to supporting each other.”
It’s no surprise to Donna Kush, president and CEO of the Omaha Community Foundation (OCF), that the Omaha–Council Bluffs area ranks in the top 3% nationally in per capita giving. The city’s extraordinary generosity and self-investment, she explained, are year-rou nd efforts.
“We take care of one another,’’ Kush said. ‘‘That’s the heart of Omaha ph ilanthropy.”
In 2023 alone, OCF and their fundholders granted $280 million to nonprofits. Of the 17,000 individual grants distributed to over 3,000 nonprofit organizations, 71% remained within the metro area.
“We’re very proud of last year being a record year for us,” Kush said. “Having the community we have makes us nationally competitive.” In another record-breaking achievement, OCF’s assets now total around $2 billion, making them the 12th largest community foundation in the Un ited States.
While streamlining local philanthropy has always been OCF’s greatest strength, Kush said the severe weather disaster earlier this year marked a major shift for the organization.
A devastating tornado outbreak swept across Nebraska and Iowa on April 26, leaving hundreds of homes and businesses in ruins. OCF swiftly established the Nebraska Tornado Recovery Fund, receiving its first donation within 30 minutes.
In just two weeks, the community had donated a million dollars.
The Foundation recognized a gap in coordination between government partners, nonprofits, individual fund holders, family foundations, corporate community leaders, and more. “There was a need for a neutral convener, and we were uniquely positioned to ensure resources were maximized throughout the community,” Kush said.
Affirming the necessity for long-term crisis management, OCF activated a long-term recovery group (LTRG) to help provide stable housing and support after disasters. The LTRG facilitates quick, flexible responses, ensuring effective resource coordination for current and future crises.
Disaster response, education, and the arts are just some of the efforts within economic prosperity, one of OCF’s main funding priorities. Mental and behavioral health is another priority—OCF gathers information directly from nonprofits, including types of services offered or information about new facilities, then communicates the information to individual fundholders or private and family foundations. Communication is also key in the funding priority of mate rnal health.
OCF launched the Omaha Pathways Community HUB in 2023, which uses community healthcare workers to remove health barriers and improve birth outcomes. The Foundation collaborates with various healthcare partners to measure data and track progress. “This model may be adapted in the future to address the needs of other populations, too, such as seniors and those requiring mental and behavioral health support,” Kush added.
OCF also partners with Front Porch Investments to address affordable housing needs. This partnership aims to improve and expand affordable housing options within the community, responding to the major demand for such resources. Each of these initiatives, Kush said, are supported by philanthropy and commu nity donors.
OMAHA’S
“We’re proud to be quarterbacking these community-wide efforts where our leadership is needed to address specific problems. It’s all possible because of the community’s generosity,” Brandon Hamm, OCF’s board chair, said.
Though the Foundation has strategic goals of continuing to see funding go beyond the metro, Hamm said they see a strong trend among Omaha donors with successful businesses who want their charitable dollars to stay within their own community.
“What we’re also seeing with some of our major donor families is that second or third generation inheritors might not live here,” Kush explained. “We see it as a very important role to be that connector, helping to keep them educated, informed, and connected to the Omaha nonprofits they support.”
The Foundation now boasts over 2,000 fundholders, supporting the needs of more than 3,000 nonprofits, initiatives, and funds across greater Omaha and Southwest Iowa. Kush said they are prepared to continue their guidance and leadership through the major transfer of wealth expected nationwide over the next decade.
“We have no doubt the next generation will continue this legacy of giving,” Kush said. “Omaha’s long-term success is inevitable as long as our community is actively dedicated to improving as a whole.
“Our city’s future is bright, because giving is in our DNA.’’

Lutheran Family Services (LFS) drives innovative solutions that improve lives and strengthen families across the region. Since its founding in 1892, LFS has grown into a regional organization that delivers services in 90 Nebraska counties in 2023. LFS staff provide therapy and case management for behavioral health and substance use, children and family therapy and support, and refugee resettlement and acclimation. LFS is also a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, which expands care and service delivery for the most vulnerable and underserved in our communities. NEBRASKA STATE SUICIDE PREVENTION COALITION
P.O. Box 23002 Lincoln, NE 68542 suicideprevention.nebraska@ gmail.com
BACKGROUND
Founded in 1999, the Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition (NSSPC) is a dedicated non-profit and volunteer organization working to improve suicide prevention in the state of Nebraska. We are composed of passionate individuals and representatives from public and private sectors, including suicide survivors and those who have lost loved ones to suicide. We are recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services as the primary group responsible for coordinating Nebraska’s suicide prevention efforts. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, NSSPC strives to create a supportive and informed community, working tirelessly to save lives and foster hope throughout Nebraska.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Our work is fueled by private foundations, grants, and donations, enabling us to develop and implement vital suicide prevention programs throughout all of Nebraska. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, we strive to create a supportive and informed community, save lives, support those who have lost someone to suicide, and foster hope in Nebraska. Annually, we support suicide prevention through our Mini-Grant Program, awarding $500-$4,000 grants to local coalitions, schools, communities, and nonprofits. These funds enhance local prevention and postvention initiatives. Every dollar donated to NSSPC is reinvested into our communities to bolster these critical efforts. Your contribution can significantly impact the well-being of individuals and families across Nebraska. Thank you for supporting our mission!

BACKGROUND
In the heart of Sarpy County lies a commitment to caring for one another, especially during times of need. NeighborGood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which has been serving as a beacon of hope, providing essential support to families facing food insecurity for over 15 years. Since its inception as Tri-City Food Pantry, NeighborGood has played a crucial role in addressing food insecurity, serving hundreds of families each month. Families are from the greater Sarpy County and Ralston communities and include seniors, children, active duty military, veterans, and neighbors down the street.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
NeighborGood is always looking for local businesses or community groups to partner with and host food drives. Monetary and in-kind donations help support our pet pantry, meat program, community garden, edible landscaping, summer snack packs, deliveries, and more.
To ensure that no family goes hungry, the need to expand capacity to serve is clear, therefore NeighborGood is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a new building for the local community. In July of 2023, NeighborGood purchased a three-acre parcel of land from the City of Papillion located at 309 American Parkway next door to its existing location. Architectural designs call for increasing the size from 1,800 square feet to nearly 10,000 square feet, enabling the organization to serve more guests in need and operate more efficiently.

In 2017, Omaha Children’s Museum had a record-breaking year with nearly 325,000 visitors to the museum, making OCM the most-visited museum in Nebraska. The museum served nearly 800 summer campers and nearly 40,000 students through outreach programs and field trips. In summer 2016, the museum began a three-year partnership with the Nebraska State Fair to bring an educational and fun exhibit to the fair each year. OCM staff served as consultants for the Nebraska 150 Celebration’s Mobile Children’s Museum, which launched its six-month, statewide tour from the museum in April 2017. In October 2017,
the museum launched its first national tour, Forever Forest. This will tour for 10 years, stopping at science centers, children’s museums, and other venues.
Founded in 1976, Omaha Children’s Museum (OCM) has been a special place where children can challenge themselves, discover how the world works, and learn through play for multiple generations.

Omaha Children’s Museum is committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow through play. Omaha Businesses
Don’t
Just Give— They Give BIG
our years ago, the Los Angeles Times released a study comparing charitable giving in Wichita, Kansas, and Omaha. In every category save education, Omaha came out on top: arts, hospitals, and health and human services. Omaha, quite simply, experienced “a higher level of giving.” While many of the big names are familiar to those of us in the metro—Buffett, Holland, Scott, Hawks, Kiewit, Weitz, Lozier, et al.—philanthropic efforts are frequently an integral part of life for many local business owners and businesses writ large.
Why do they choose to spend money, resources, and precious time giving back? It’s because they want to benefit the community in which they live and do business. For many business leaders, it’s simply the right thing to do. And they accomplish this through volunteering, donations, and other philanthropic efforts, such as offering pro bono services.
Take, for example, Kate Betsworth, assistant vice president of workforce resource initiatives at Union Pacific Railroad, who serves as president of the Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska board of directors in her off hours. She has volunteered with the organization for nine years, and throughout her time with the nonprofit, she has overseen numerous initiatives, such as creating a special committee made up of Girl Scouts. “I am very inspired by the growth we see in our girl leaders,” she said. “The work of Girl Scouts encourages them to use their voices, gain confidence, and dream of what they can do. And we do that at every age and every stage throughout t heir lives.”
Attorneys at the venerable law firm Kutak Rock are similarly deeply involved in the community. In addition to working with pipeline groups, children’s charities, Habitat for Humanity, and United Way, among many others, attorneys also volunteer their time, talent, and expertise to Legal Aid of Nebraska, which “promotes justice, dignity, hope, and self-sufficiency through quality civil legal aid for those who have nowhere el se to turn.”
Founded in 1963, Legal Aid of Nebraska provides free civil legal services to low-income clients, who typically earn an
average annual salary of around $22,000. Its mission is to “ensure the fair enforcement of the law, to protect the rights of the people, and to address the urgent legal needs of our communities.” The organization believes that everyone should receive proper legal representation—regardless of socio-economic status or the ability to pay at torney fees.
Amy Van Horne, a partner at Kutak Rock and current president of the board of Legal Aid of Nebraska, said, “Legal Aid is so important to the firm as a whole. It’s been baked into the DNA of Kutak Rock from its founding; there was always a belief that one of the responsibilities of attorneys was to participate in and serve the local communities.”
The partnership has made it possible for countless Nebraskans to receive legal assistance. “In 2022, we had an impact of more than $11 million on behalf of our clients,” said Laurie Heer Dale, executive director at Legal Aid of Nebraska. “In 2023, we had over 19,000 requests for assistance and we’re looking at over a $13 mill ion impact.”
Expertise isn’t the only way metro businesses give back to the community. While famed for its double-stuffed crust pizza, Papa Johns also provides grants to organizations in local communities where it does business through the Papa Johns Foundation for Building Community, which it establis hed in 2019.
Jenn Garner, the company’s senior director of corporate affairs and sustainability, said, “This program creates an impact nationwide for our franchises and it’s part of Papa Johns as a Global Brand. The program reflects our
core values, which are: people first, do the right thing, and everyone belongs.”
Omaha Papa Johns franchise owner Eric Murphy and his team have volunteered, participated in helping to direct grant funds, and delivered pizza donations. “We consider it a great privilege to be able to contribute to all of these deserving organizations—the work they do in our communities is tremendous, and we are thrilled to have been able to help in this way,” he said.
First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) is also more than happy to help and remains dedicated to doing its part to build a successful future. This year, the company awarded Impact Grants totaling $1,143,000 to 53 organizations across Nebraska and Western Iowa. Grants support programs focused on workforce development and entrepreneurship, affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization, and adult education, financial literacy, a nd security.
Whitney Baker, FNBO’s director of philanthropy and giving, remarked, “FNBO recognizes that investments in [these areas] have returns that far outlast a one-time donation. Through this grant program, our goal is to find community partners working in these areas that not only impact individual lives, but build stronger and more financially successful communities…There’s a component of that commitment embedded in the culture at FNBO. Employees take pride in the way that FNBO supports the community.”
Omaha businesses often put competition to the side to come together for the common good. Major businesses like CQuence Health Group, NP Dodge Company, Security National Bank, First National Bank of Omaha, SilverStone Group, Noddle Companies, Physicians Mutual Insurance Company, and others all support the Aksarben Foundation, which benefits Nebraskans and Western Iowans through education, scholarships, career training, community grants, farm family
recognition, and honoring volunteerism, philanthropy, and commun ity service.
Founded in 1895, the organization has raised funds through numerous endeavors, including the Aksarben Stockshow & Rodeo, the Aksarben Racetrack and Coliseum (demolished during the 2000s to make way for present-day Aksarben Village), and of course, the legendary annual Ak sarben Ball.
Nathan P. Dodge, President of NP Dodge Company, is on the foundation’s board of governors and is proud of how business leaders come together in support of a higher purpose. “I’ve never seen a foundation like this,” he said. “You see business competitors come together and drop the guard of competition to better the community.”
For Dodge, that’s what makes Aksarben Foundation special. “We have talented people who care a lot about the community and connect over this passion,” he observed. “Under Aksarben Foundation, we work together, and our only goal is the community. That is fundamenta lly unique.”
This holds true for Omaha’s philanthropic business landscape. Whether it entails volunteering time and expertise or providing funding for community causes, metro businesses continue to step up, show out, and make a lasting difference in the lives t hey touch.

salarmyomaha.org
BACKGROUND
The Salvation Army of Omaha’s three community centers—Citadel Corps, North Corps, and the Kroc Center—as well as the Burrows Center for Help and Hope and Renaissance Village, are uniquely situated to meet the diverse needs of Omaha’s metro-area neighborhoods. From after-school programs, to food pantries and mobile food distributions, to behavioral health programs, The Salvation Army of Omaha sustains the bodies, minds, and spirits of the community’s most vulnerable.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Monetary donations support thousands in the metro area whose lives are improved by The Salvation Army’s eight core programs—food, housing, material assistance, youth development, older adult services, behavioral health, anti-human trafficking, and disaster relief services. In Omaha, 86 cents of every donated dollar go toward funding programs that help those most in need. Donations can be made online at salarmyomaha.org.
Our work is extensive. To provide just a few statistical examples: in the 2022 calendar year, The North Corps Community Care Kitchen served more than 27,000 lunches and after-school snacks to people in need, while the Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen program served more than 10,000 lunches to local children over the summer months. In August 2023, we gave away nearly 10,000 backpacks stuffed with school supplies to families in need.
The Salvation Army also offers many rewarding volunteer opportunities, from assisting with mobile meal distribution and packing backpacks with school supplies to delivering Thanksgiving dinners to older adults and helping to organize toys and gifts for families in need at Christmastime. San Mai Martial Arts
When you think of martial arts schools, charitable giving and community support might not come to mind. However, Master Hollis Dickerson, owner and master instructor of Omaha’s premier martial arts school, San-Mai Martial Arts, embodies these values. With over 40 years of experience, Master Dickerson has come to believe that martial arts are about more than just physical, mental, and spiritual training. It also involves giving back to family and community.
Master Dickerson holds high-ranking black belts in Traditional Tae Kwon Do (Kukkiwon certified), Hapkido (World Kido Federation certified), and Philippine Weaponry (IPMAF certified). These diverse styles share a common foundation: the values of self-giving, family protection, and community support.
Early in his journey, Master Dickerson earned a B.S. and an MBA from the University of Nebraska Omaha. He left the corporate world to focus on running his martial arts school full time,
incorporating his belief in helping others into the school’s ethos. Starting with holiday food drives and coat donations, he expanded his charitable efforts to include partial and full scholarships for students who could not afford training. These scholarships provide transformative benefits such as confidence, assertiveness, respect, and cooperation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Master Dickerson prioritized his students’ learning and wellbeing despite the financial challenges. He utilized Zoom for live classes and added engaging activities like word games and drawing contests to keep students motivated and active and, weather permitting, classes were held outside on San-Mai’s front lawn allowing for fresh air and social distancing.
Omaha, known for its charitable organizations and robust foster care system, offers numerous opportunities for community support. Master Dickerson has provided specialized programs for foster families, scholarships, discounts for Boys Town employees, accommodations for children with learning disabilities, and contributions to school fundraisers.
Even after 40 years, Master Dickerson continues to seek new ways to enhance lessons, support students and families in need, and contribute to his community. His dedication to the art of giving distinguishes him as an exceptional instructor, leader, and mentor, contributing to San-Mai Martial Arts being recognized as Best of Omaha for 10 consecutive years.
You can contact San-Mai Martial Arts by calling 402.333.5457 or emailing them at Info@san-mai.com. Address: 2410 S 156th Circle, Omaha NE. 68130

BACKGROUND
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Founded in 1972, Santa Monica has spent the last 50 years developing a premier treatment experience for women facing substance misuse, mental health issues, and trauma. Through a holistic approach, women stabilize mentally, emotionally, socially, and physically. Santa Monica reaches women by employing multiple therapeutic strategies that complement individualized life experiences and needs. Women develop personal accountability and life skills during their journeys, which supports their growth toward independence. Santa Monica provides a continuum of care that can last up to two years via four steps down levels of care; Intermediate Residential, Halfway House, ¾ way house, and Supported Transitional Living apartments. Services include internal Peer Support Services and Chemical Dependency Evaluations.
Women face significant stigma around substance misuse, mental health issues, and trauma. When women are in the throes of these challenges the barriers seem insurmountable. Supporting women on the road to recovery has a ripple effect beyond measure. Women are pillars in families, social groups, and work groups. By supporting them, you are reducing recidivism, increasing employability, removing children from out-ofhome placement, and investing in community. The easiest way to support our mission is to advocate for support of women and places like Santa Monica that empower women to live up to their potential. To face the recovery journey with dignity, women also need necessities such as clothes and toiletries. When these are finite, the road can seem darker.

The Highlander, one of Omaha’s oldest neighborhoods, was once characterized by engagement, commerce, and community. However, themes shifted as the neighborhood was impacted by two major public housing facilities and the construction of the 75 North freeway, displacing countless residents and assets. Once these facilities were demolished, a unique opportunity was presented to revitalize the neighborhood’s landscape and meet the needs of the surrounding community. Founded in 2011, Seventy Five North’s mission is centered on Highlander’s people. By developing accessible, mixed-income housing, creating a cradle-to-career education pipeline, enhancing health and wellness access, and fostering economic growth, the organization works with neighbors to ensure children learn, families are healthy, and the community thrives.
Community involvement is the cornerstone of strengthening the Highlander neighborhood. If you have never visited Highlander, that is the first step in showing support! We would be happy to see you at any of our neighborhood events, whether as a volunteer or community member. While you are visiting, supporting local businesses boosts the economy and encourages entrepreneurship within the community. By patronizing these businesses, you help create jobs, retain local talent, and foster a vibrant economic fabric. Additionally, donating to Seventy Five North funds programs, events, and initiatives that enable the organization to continue its mission of community revitalization and resident support.

The vinNEBRASKA Foundation was established in 1989, and in 2024 celebrated our 35th anniversary by raising $1.3 million over three years for the Stephen Center. Partnering with local charities, vinNEBRASKA brings world-class wine and winemakers to Omaha each year for a two-night event. To quote one of last year’s participants: “Everyone in this state who is serious about wine is in this room right now.” The vinNEBRAKA Foundation also offers scholarships and has partnered with the Court of Master Sommeliers to provide more regular opportunities for Nebraska’s wine professionals to expand their knowledge of wine. A Service of History
ennis Hynes is a retired military veteran and man of faith. He’s also a lifelong learner and avid historian who combines these interests into giving his time to others.
That lifelong dedication to making a difference began when Hynes was a history major at the University of Portland. Following a two-year mandatory stint in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Hynes decided to enlist in the Air Force as opposed to staying in school and risk being drafted to the Vietnam War.
“It was a time when people were making decisions of ‘I’m going to go to Canada, I’m going to wait and hope my number doesn’t get called,’” Hynes remembered. “I thought my place was to go try to be part of the solution to t he problem.”
He went into the military in 1966 and emerged 27 years later, having attained the rank of colonel.
Although he didn’t graduate from college, education remained part of Hynes’ life. In Brussels, Belgium, he served as the US. representative on the International S chool Board.
“That was very interesting, because everybody’s view of education was strikingly the same at the core, but in implementation was very different,” Hynes said. “At one point, we were in a discussion about when schools should start so that the buses knew when to go out. So, schools all had to start about the same time. The Dutch, they didn’t like school to start at 8 [a.m.]; they thought we should not start until about 9:30 or 10.”
In the late 1980s, Hynes and his wife, Kathy, landed in the Omaha area on assignment at Strategic Air Command. Hynes spent five years working in the area, and the couple retired and remained in Bellevue. Hynes, however, couldn’t sit
still. He was asked to come back to the military a couple of times and did. He also worked as a contractor. Around 2013, another 20 years after officially “retiring” from the Air Force, Hynes finally ful ly retired.
The affable colonel enjoys being active, so, encouraged by his wife, he looked at a number of places to volunteer. He chose The Durham Museum because it looked like “a pretty neat place.”
That neat place has become a source of passion and inspiration for him.
“You can tell that he really cares about this place. That comes through in his enthusiasm when he is…being a docent for a field trip,” said Dawn Myron, director of communications at The Durham. “You can just see that he really relishes, you know, connecting with the kids and seeing their eyes light up when when they really get what he’s sharing about history. You can tell that he really cares about this place in this community, just in the way that he engages with the guests.”
Hynes takes time to learn everything he can about an exhibition, even when it isn’t his person al favorite.
“Some of the most interesting ones are those where I think ‘You have got to be kidding me,’” Hynes said. “There was an exhibition about Katharine Hepburn [2015’s“Katharine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen”]. I loved that one. I thought, ‘What do I know about women’s clothes?’ But it turned out to be a really well-put-together exhibition because it had posters for all the movies she’d been in, and people would come in and ask all sorts of questions about her.”
He particularly remembers“Dressing the Abbey,” which displayed at The Durham from September 2022 through early Ja nuary 2023.
“I remember there was this group of about 14 people from Australia,” Hynes recounted. “They were on a tour of the US, and they came to Omaha because they were big Downton Abbey fans. There were a lot of people that were seamstresses and people who worked in theater and involved in costuming, so you just get to meet all kinds of people.”
Connecting with people is one of Hynes’ favorite parts of the gig.
Fellow volunteer and friend Tom Johnson said Hynes may humbly mention that he’s “going down there again,” but it brings hi m great joy.
“One of my favorite memories is from that Muppets exhibition they had a while back,” Johnson said, referring to “The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited!,” which ran from October 2020 through January 2021. “They had an area where you could try your hand at recreating a video. Well, Den got right down there at the kids’ level with the puppets and was having a great time with the kids that ca me through.”
Along with puppeteering, Hynes himself often gets into character for the role, dressing in costumes for various exhibitions. Myron said he is happy to enrich people’s experiences by becoming a Shakespearean actor, a 1920s mobster, and more. Hynes understands that people learn in different ways and delights in providing visual and audio aids so people have the fullest experience possible.
“He just takes the time to really be warmly welcoming, and kind of makes sure that he’s asking questions that are engaging our guests, and that helps add to the visitor experience,” Myron said. “You can just tell that connecting to people is so import ant to him.”
Hynes particularly enjoys connecting to his fellow service members. He helps organize tours for the crew of the USS Omaha, assisting military folks like those he fondly worked with to connect with the story of Omaha and their ship’s namesake.
Beyond working front and center with the visitors to the museum, Hynes also serves the museum by working on the volunteer advisory committee, which provides
insight and suggests improvements for volunteers. He has also been a volunteer at Fontenelle Forest, currently volunteers at Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home, and regularly gives time to his church, St. Matthew Catholic in Bellevue. Those he serves have taken notice over the years; a year ago, Hynes was honored as the 2023 Veteran Volunteer awardee of Serve Nebraska’s annual Step For ward Awards.
Hynes may have started in the military prompted by a desire to serve others, but living a life of volunteerism has served his soul.
“Getting in there, and having class with the kids, and teaching them, you know, you get to do all kinds of stuff,” Hynes said. “But you [also] get to tell them about history. I mean, what more could one ask for in life?”
“Getting in there, and having class with the kids, and teaching them, you know, you get to do all kinds of stuff. But you [also] get to tell them about history. I mean, what more could one ask for in life?”

Sisters Who Serve The World
UNO’s Chi Omega Sorority Sisters Champion
the Make-A-Wish Foundation
ccording to the Make-A-Wish (M.A.W.) website, Chi Omega women are the “Sisters Who Serve The World” because of the endless work they do. Members of Chi Omega Zeta Delta, the chapter at University of Nebraska at Omaha, use their time and energy toward g iving back.
Nationally, the Chi Omega sorority has been partnered with Make-A-Wish since 2002 and is one of Make-A-Wish’s biggest sponsors, also known as a “Cause Champion Sponsor.”
Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children and families struggling with illness to bring hope and joy during a stressful time. Whether that’s sending a little girl to Disney World in full princess attire, a shopping spree, or even meeting a celebrity, Make-A-Wish grants wishes for children and makes their dream s come true.
The Omaha Chi Omega chapter, Zeta Delta, has been granting wishes and working with wish kids since the partnership began. “In these 22 years, we have been able to attend wish-granting parties, host large events to support Make-A-Wish, and truly see the
impact that Make-A-Wish has on children and their families here in our community. Our chapter has volunteered over 7,000 service hours and donated $114,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said current Zeta Delta President, Mariss a Danauskas.
All proceeds raised through events and volunteer hours go directly to Make-A-Wish Nebraska. Chi O sorority sisters not only have the opportunity to meet the children they are helping, but they also experience an impact that is both local and visible.
For many, the reason they are drawn to Greek Life is the philanthropic pursuit of the community. Chi Omega is the largest national sorority by membership. There are 181 collegiate Chi Omega chapters, each filled with young women who actively work toward granting Make-A-Wish wishes and brightening hard days for wish kids within their c ommunities.
Active member and Social Chair Assistant Courtney Withers spoke about why she joined Chi Omega, reflecting: “Going into college, I knew that I wanted to be involved with my community, and it was encouraged within my family and friends to join a sorority. With that in mind, I decided that I wanted to rush in order to fulfill that desire.
“At UNO there are four amazing sororities, each with their own perks and philanthropies. Despite each sorority having its unique qualities, I was specifically drawn to Chi Omega because of its philanthropy, Make-A-Wish,” Withers continued. “MakeA-Wish aligned perfectly with my values as I work with oncology patients at Bergan Mercy as well as at a daycare. Being able to provide kids with an opportunity to experience something they have always wanted to do is extremely rewarding and fulfilling. It is evident that M.A.W. plays a massive role in Chi Omega.”
Chi Omega sister Alexandria Adams has a personal connection to Make-A-Wish. “I myself suffer from a life-altering and life-threatening illness that prevents me from living a normal life. Being able to volunteer my time and help raise money for a cause that helps children just like me is indescribable,” she shared. “Chi Omega has given me a chance to give back to a wonderful organization that lets kids who are going through the unimaginable be kids again— and there is no better cause than that.”
Emma Munter, the Zeta Delta chapter’s director of community engagement, organizes all philanthropic events, arranges volunteer days, and serves as the chapter’s Make-A-Wis h liaison.
“My favorite event was Waffles for Wishes last spring. It was my first large Make-AWish event that I planned. It was special to see how many people came to support our philanthropy and raise thousands of dollars in a few hours,” Munter said.
At the chapter’s 75th Eleusinia (founders day) earlier this year, the family of a wish kid spoke about Chi Omega’s impact. They had just returned from an all-expense-paid vacation to Hawaii provided by the charity. “The family spoke about how Make-A-Wish is a big family who lifts each other up and brings happiness to those in a trying time. It was inspiring that we as Chi Omegas are able to help make children’s dreams come true,” Munter said.
Not only are the Make-A-Wish families grateful, but Chi Omega women are also thankful for the opportunity and skills they gain. Using their time putting on philanthropic events helps them to be more compassionate for others and to find strength within themselves and the community a round them.
Sister duo Grace Bieber and Maeve McCoy recently graduated in May and credit their work with Make-A-Wish for inspiring them to give back to the communities they will be a part of in the future.
“Contributing to Make-A-Wish with Chi Omega showed me new avenues to give directly to the Nebraska community beyond my time in college. There are both big and small ways to give back in your day-to-day life, ranging from fundraising
to volunteering at Make-A-Wish events. Incorporating these efforts into your life is easier than it seems and allows you to be part of something bigger than yourself,” Biebe r detailed.
“Working with Make-A-Wish through Chi Omega has greatly helped me grow as a woman and I see myself continuing to help others beyond my time in college,” McCoy added.
Through volunteering, Chi Omega women develop skills such as leadership, management, and communication alongside a better understanding of how teamwork and collaboration enhance both the efficiency and efficacy of large organizations such as Chi Omega and Make-A-Wish. All this combines to prepare them to enter a collaborative workforce.
“College is such a unique time in a person’s life, as it is largely selfish and focused on one’s own goals and aspirations. To be an active member of my community greatly helps me put my life in perspective and commit to giving back throughout my future career,” said Alaina Lorkovic, Zeta Delta’s recruitment chair. “Especially as a future health care worker, service and compassion for others is at the heart of all we do. I am beyond confident that my experiences through M.A.W. Nebraska will forever inspire me to be a change-maker in my c ommunity.”
For information about Make-A-Wish visit wish.org. or learn more about the Chi Omega sisterhood visit ch iomega.com.
“Working with Make-A-Wish through Chi Omega has greatly helped me grow as a woman and I see myself continuing to help others beyond my time in college.”
