The energy of island life is unstoppable.

Each day feels more adventurous than the last. It’s the very mindset that inspires our footwear, and now, as we head to Hawai‘i’s Polynesian neighbor, we’re feeling more invigorated than ever.

Like Hawai‘i, life in Tahiti revolves around the ocean. People travel from near and far to surf Teahupo‘o, the world’s thickest wave. We flew over here with a few friends from Hawai‘i in search of common ties and found a vibrant community that was ready to be explored.

Reading Energy with Ariihoe Tefaafana When you’re foiling, why is it important to understand the ocean?

When you ride, and anywhere you ride, it’s important to feel the elements and never go against them. Nothing is stronger than nature, so it’s better to flow with it.

Does the energy of a wave influence how you approach it?

Every wave is different. In surfing and foiling every detail counts. From take off to the end you are riding differently, even if the experience may look the same. More than the energy of the wave, to me, it’s also important to feel the vibes of the place you are surfing. For example, in Teahupo‘o, when it’s big and I do not really feel it, I am not surfing.

I like to follow my instinct.

As someone who lives right next to Teahupo‘o, can you describe the feeling when a big swell comes?

When you surf somewhere so beautiful yet so dangerous, it’s unbelievable. One week before a big swell hits Tahiti everyone is talking about it 24 hours a day. Everyone is excited and scared.

Everyone is getting ready for something they’ve waited the whole year for. We’re all just happy and stoked to know we’ll be surfing big waves.

What is your favorite aspect of living in Tahiti?

We have the chance to live between the mountains and the ocean. There is so much to do and it helps you grow in another way. That’s my favorite aspect of living here. There is no stress. We live the present.

MEN’S SHOES

How do you work with or draw on the energy and currents of the ocean when paddling?

When I think of paddling, the first thing that comes to mind is an overwhelming feeling of solace and respect. There’s something about being surrounded by the ocean that makes you appreciate everything you have on land. The energy received from the ocean is a form of meditation, as well as just good old-fashioned fun.

What kind of spontaneity comes with living an island lifestyle?

I think spontaneity and island life are synonymous.

This is especially true as a waterman and dealing with the ever-changing ocean. I’ll spend all year waiting for the right combination of swell, wind, and tide to come along. When that window of time presents itself, I’ll drop whatever I’m doing in a heartbeat to get after it. I think having an impromptu mindset is a hallmark of island life. You can only plan so much, at the end of the day you have to play with the cards life deals you.

Are you finding any similarities between the energy of life in Tahiti and Hawai‘i?

From the hilltops of Tahiti to the bays of Hawai‘i the geographical similarities are uncanny. As a Hawaiian whose ancestors sailed from Tahiti, I definitely felt a connection to the ‘āina (land) down here. At the end of the day, I think the same values of ‘ohana (family), aloha, and an affinity towards the ocean are shared.

It was awesome getting to learn about Tahitian culture and seeing the resemblance. This will be the first of many more trips to my cousins down south.

What do you try to convey through your lifestyle photography?

Growing up in such a beautiful place, it’s hard to put into words what we get to experience.

What I’m always trying to convey when I take a photo is the genuine essence of a subject.

Something that you might not have the words to explain, whether it’s a landscape, a person, or something dear to you.

How does living near the ocean influence you and your work?

Growing up surrounded by water, it’s a given that some of your first memories come from the ocean. I grew up going with my dad and uncles to fish for our ‘ohana (family), playing in the waves with my cousins, and camping during the summers on the beach. The ocean is a source of life for so many of us. I love the water, the way it shifts and changes daily is so beautiful. That being said, I definitely have a healthy fear and deep respect for the power of the ocean. Photography has helped me re-learn how to interact with the ocean.

Where to sit while shooting surf, which direction the current pushes, rip tides, and just knowing my personal limit.

Are you finding any similarities between the energy of life on these two islands?

A place is made special by the people who live there. Tahiti is the first Pacific Island I’ve been to outside of Hawai‘i. Growing up, we learn a lot about the cultures of Polynesia.

How our traditions and languages might differ, but also how closely tied we are to one another. In Tahiti, you can feel the warm aloha that we have at home from so many we met. Our friends here taught us how to duck dive under certain breaks, the names of different peaks, and even the similarities between our own languages. It was easy to see that we both have a deep and profound love for our ‘āina (land).
