In the Hawaiian Islands, adventure beckons at every corner. A picture-perfect playground, every moment offers an opportunity to break free from the mundane and leap into the extraordinary. From sunrise surf missions at Waikīkī’s most fabled lineups to sunset cliff jumps, finding your own peak moment is often as simple as stepping outside.

To bring this catalog to life, we explored O‘ahu’s reefs, streets, and channels with professional longboarders Kani Stewart and Kelis Kaleopa‘a and cliff-diving master Dan Worden. Each an ambassador of aloha and expert in the water, they reminded us that in the Islands, play isn’t a pastime, it’s a way of life.

Now, let’s go have some fun.

Off the Ledge with Dan Worden

Five seconds before Dan Worden throws himself over the ledge, he pauses to take a deep breath, his attention razor-sharp. Four seconds: he exhales and takes a small step forward. Three seconds: he extends both arms to his sides, closes his eyes, and visualizes the dive he’s planned. Two seconds: he lowers his arms, his toes now gripping the edge of a 60-foot lava rock cliff. One second left. Now he’s airborne—spinning through the sky before gracefully slicing into the ocean below.

Along the cliff, crowds of onlookers erupt in awe, marveling at his precision. “Cheeeee-hoooo!” a medley of teenagers scream. “Unreal!”

For Dan, slowly surfacing with a toothy smile, this is just another day doing what he loves. Hurling himself into the abyss isn’t an act of recklessness—it’s a pastime that’s shaped his life. A natural athlete and born adventurer, Dan’s passion for all things water led him into the world of competitive swimming and diving. He earned a coveted spot on both the swimming and diving roster at the University of Hawai‘i

at Mānoa. And as an accomplished open-ocean swimmer, he's also one of only a handful of people to swim from Maui to Lāna‘i.

“The water has shaped the person I am. It’s given me friendships, memories, and experiences beyond count. I couldn’t imagine a world where I wasn’t constantly in the ocean,” Dan says.

“Cliff diving is what’s brought me the most joy and connected me to people and places in a way I could have never imagined.”

The ocean is more than just a playground for Dan; it’s also a proving ground. Having spent the last decade pioneering cliff diving on O‘ahu, Dan has garnered tens of thousands of fans online, spearheading a small community of local divers looking to push their limits amid some of the world’s most jaw-dropping backgrounds.

“There’s nothing like cliff diving in Hawai‘i. It’s so raw. And there’s something about the level of focus

you need that really appeals to me,” he explains. “When you’re standing on the edge, there’s no room for distraction—the margin for error is just so thin. You’re surrounded by so much beauty and your heart is racing. Being able to take that concentration, trust my training, and execute a perfect dive is what makes me feel alive.”

In addition to being a professional cliff diver and renowned waterman, Dan is also a dedicated ocean-safety expert committed to sharing his knowledge and skills with future generations. He works closely with surf schools, lifeguards, and youth programs throughout Hawai‘i, helping to instill water safety skills to ensure keiki can thrive in Hawai‘i’s aquatic wonderland for decades to come.

“For me, giving back is about respect. It’s about respect for the ocean and for the people of this place that I love so much. If I can pass on my knowledge and help even one person feel safer and more confident in the water, then I know I’ve done something meaningful. And if I can have a lot of fun while doing it, then even better.”

Waikīkī is Home

It’s a busy Saturday morning in Waikīkī when Kelis Kaleopa‘a crosses the bustling streets of Kalākaua Avenue, weaving past a sea of tourists, beach umbrellas, and through the hum of city life. Tucked under her arm is a classic single-fin longboard, waxed and ready. Her eyes, however, are fixed just beyond the shoreline—to the peeling right-hand waves at Queen’s, her homebreak and sanctuary. “Looks fun,” she says with a knowing smile. “It’ll be nice to take a dip and get a few.”

For Kelis, surfing Queen’s isn’t just about drawing the perfect line and linking together a few turns amid the crowd. It’s a homecoming, a connection to something much older—something that flows just beneath the surface.

“All of this area of Waikīkī used to be marshland,” she says, standing in the lagoon fronting the lineup. “There are still streams here that bubble up from the mountains. You can feel it; it’s colder than the ocean. This is my place to reconnect. When I stand here, I can almost feel my ancestors.”

That deep-seated connection—to land, to family, to the ocean—is what sets Kelis Kaleopa‘a apart from many of her contemporaries. Coupled with an innate sense of grace on land and in the water, her finely honed appreciation for her community and history is

palpable. “Waikīkī has always been a home for Hawaiians,” she explains. “Long before the hotels and high-rises, this was where our kings and queens lived, surfed, danced, and had fun. This bay was their playground, their place for joy.”

Kelis’s own lineage is deeply interwoven into the history of this fabled community. “My family has lived here for generations. I’ve got cousins, aunties, uncles who all grew up right here calling Waikikī home. They’re Beach Boys, professional watermen, surfers.

“To us, this isn’t about getting away on vacation, this is our home; this is our community.”

Back in the lineup, it’s clear that tight-knit sense of community still defines Waikīkī’s modern-day longboarding scene. At the heart of it all sits Queen’s. Fronting what was once Queen Lili‘uokalani’s beach home, the gentle right-hander is considered one of the world’s premier peaks for longboarding. And it was here, amid the wave’s sparkling blue walls, where Kelis honed her craft, becoming one of the most talked about female surfers of her generation. To be sure, when she surfs, people can’t help but watch. She’s just that stylish, that graceful.

Alongside other local luminaries—like Keani Canullo, Toots, Rocco Olmstead,

Nique Miller, and world champs Kelia Moniz and Kai Sallas—Kelis has helped propel a distinctly smooth style shaped by her own personality and community. “Our surf culture is unique because of our past,” she says. “Our ali‘i (royalty) surfed these same waves. When I paddle out, I try to build on that. I can feel it. It’s like I’m sharing waves with my ancestors.”

Kelis was born into this way of life. “I was just a few months old the first time I got on a board with my mom,” she recalls. “I’ve been catching waves with my mom and grandma at Queen’s for as long as I can remember. That’s three generations of us, in the water, at our home spot. How many other people can say that?” A proud Native Hawaiian woman in the global surf spotlight, Kelis embraces her Waikīkī heritage with a sense of kuleana and purpose. “Everyone thinks of Hawai‘i as a tourist destination, but this place is so much more; it’s a part of our history. There are real lives, real stories, and real cultures thriving here and it’s important that we keep that part of Waikīkī alive.”

Back in the ocean, with the same smooth rhythm she carries on land, Kelis turns, wades out past the sandbar, and paddles into position. A waist-high right rolls through the lineup. She spins, paddles, and pops to her feet. Gliding forward, she gracefully cross-steps toward the nose and hangs ten. Clean, composed, and completely at home.

Although Waikīkī has long drawn visitors from around the world, its deeper story stretches back through generations.
