But just as we’re more than a Hawaiian-inspired footwear brand, you’re more than a single ambition.

That mindset comes naturally in Hawai‘i. The lifeguard watching over the beach by day connects with the ocean in the early hours to perfect his canoe stroke. The cafe owner spends her afternoons on a surfboard and her nights sourcing the local, nutritious ingredients her community needs.

The paddlers use their skilled hands to fly essentials across the archipelago and uphold ancient artforms.

TOWN BOUND There’s no shortage of community in Hawai‘i, especially when you head beyond the big cities. O‘ahu’s small town of Kaimukī is a shining example of that. Walk along Wai‘alae Avenue and you’ll feel the kokua (spirit of selflessness) radiating from every mom-and-pop shop.

It’s the kind of place where everyone looks out for one another, no matter the circumstance.

Aloha e Kaihe “Kai” Chong Kaimukī, O‘ahu

2 AM wake up calls aren’t for everyone, but for Kai Chong, they’re business as usual. Kai understood the importance of hard work early on. His father taught him how to paddle at just eight years old, and by 14, he was racing competitively.

When Kai isn’t in his canoe, you can find him hiking, sailing, surfing, training, or navigating the sky by plane. As an interisland cargo pilot, Kai typically rises before the sun. And while down time is few and far between, he never misses an opportunity to take advantage of nature when the conditions are nice.

That’s the magic of living in Hawai‘i.

As Kai says, it’s one of the only places where you can turn your passion for the water into a profession.

Equal parts hustle and humility, Hoku Keala draws her inspiration from the water and from her Hawaiian heritage.

A competitive paddler, she spends most of her days training for races. On those rare occasions when Hoku’s not in the ocean, you can find her honing her traditional crafting skills—though she would never call herself an expert. Hoku’s mother instilled in her the value of handmade items early on while they were living on Moloka‘i.
