Honolua Bay, Maui - Hawai‘i

KEEPERS OF ALOHA

‘Īao Valley, Maui - Hawai‘i

In Native Hawaiian society, there was no separation between the people and the ‘āina (land). They were one and the same, a profound interconnectedness. To achieve this remarkable symbiosis with the natural world, every man and woman had a specific kuleana (responsibility) in their community. In essence, sustainable stewardship of the ‘āina—maintaining the fragile balance of limited natural resources from mountains to the sea—ensured their survival as a people and the preservation of their culture. This season, we celebrate this spirit of stewardship, of protecting the special places that nourish our lives, through the examples of a handful of Maui natives who protect their far-flung corner of the island, preserving the stories and sustainable lifestyles of the past. From a man choosing to live off the grid and grow or catch his own food to a young documentarian updating Hawai‘i’s rich oral tradition. From a fireman keeping watch over a remote coastline to friends perpetuating culture through sharing aloha, the stories of these modern guardians continue to keep their Northwest Maui sanctuary thriving for future generations.

In Hawai‘i, water is life. Since Polynesian voyagers settled the Hawaiian Islands, Hawai‘i’s inhabitants have protected the fresh water that rains down on verdant mountains and the streams that carry this precious resource to the sea, nourishing the land and the people along the way. This tradition of stewardship continues today in Maui’s beautiful and often overlooked northwest corner, where local residents continue to perpetuate culture and spread aloha through preservation and education.

West Maui - Hawai‘i

“When I came to live on this side of the island, the original stones where old Hawaiians once had their houses are still here. That’s the cool part of being a caretaker up here, like an archeologist, you’re uncovering your past.” Keith Keahi

To preserve culture and protect this rugged destination, Keith believes one must practice what they preach. Living totally off-grid, growing his own food, fishing from the local bay, harvesting energy and water from the environment, and surfing a secret wave, nestled right by his home.

Men’s Hokua Mesh Night/Charcoal $70

The lightweight and breathable Hokua Mesh was crafted for any aquatic environment. With quick-drying lining, a soft nylon toe post, and anatomical fit, the Hokua Mesh moves seamlessly from shoreline to pavement without missing a step.

Culture, like blood coursing through one’s body, must flow like water in order to thrive. Native Hawaiian Keith Keahi, who lives completely off the grid in remote Northwest Maui, recognizes this dynamic, and strives to keep his culture flowing, literally and figuratively. A commercial fisherman by trade and farmer by passion, he moved from bustling Lahaina Town to the other side of the island to maintain that

“flow.” On the land where he resides, he quickly discovered an ancient patchwork of traditional Hawaiian agrarian infrastructure, an aged aqueduct he’s labored hard to rebuild. By diverting some cool, mountain stream water the way his ancestors did, he was able to circulate flowing water through his loi kalo, wetland taro patches, reviving the land and a new harvest for himself, as well as future generations

to come. Quite the feat, Keith remains humble, “I’m not trying to farm or do any of this so I can be written in history. I really don’t mind fading with time,” he says. “But I’d like someone to feel the same way I feel about my ancestors. When I touch some of these stones that were placed here hundreds of years ago, I wonder about who was the man here that once touched this rock and fixed this place.”

IN THE ISLANDS, WATER IS L IFE Just as Hawai‘i’s streams connect mountain tops to the ocean, our water-friendly shoes keep you connected in any environment, wet or dry.

TRADIT IONAL WAYFINDING IN M ODERN T IMES Founded in 1973, the Polynesian Voyaging Society began as a continuation of the legacy of Pacific Ocean exploration. Seeking to perpetuate the art and science of traditional Polynesian voyaging and the spirit of exploration, the traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hōkūle‘a, and its sister ship, Hikianalia, set sail from Honolua Bay in 1976, successfully sailing to Tahiti, the first of many epic crossings that continue today. The Polynesian Voyaging Society is one of the beneficiaries of our Ama OluKai Foundation. Every pair sold gives back to their mission of Mālama Honua.
