OUR LADY OF THE LAKE FOUNDATION

IMPACT REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2022

Philanthropy is powerful. From first-time donors to those who have loyally supported us for decades, our community makes a tangible difference by supporting our Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center.

Each gift allows us to nurture excellence by providing advancements in treatment, thoughtful approaches to the patient and family experience, exceptional clinical encounters, and a deep commitment to the health of our community. Throughout these pages are diverse examples of giving—from BASF, a global corporation supporting its local community, to a third grader

seeking to thank the hospital that gives him great care.

We know you have a choice in where to invest your dollars, and here we share examples of how your individual and collective giving has impacted our patients, team members and community. We hope you see yourself reflected in these stories. Your support matters, and we are deeply grateful for your generosity.

Change ushers in opportunity for growth and renewal. We have been fortunate to have outstanding leaders and are excited to welcome Chuck Spicer as our new Baton Rouge Market president. Having most recently served as the president and CEO of OU Medicine in Oklahoma City, Chuck’s experience will greatly compliment the depth and breadth of Our Lady of the Lake’s reach. At OU Medicine he led Oklahoma’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, a freestanding children’s hospital, the state’s only Level I trauma center, academic medicine and a 1,000+ physician multispecialty group.

We are also happy and grateful to welcome three new members of the Our Lady of the Lake Foundation Board of Directors: Norisha Glover, Richard Pellerin and Marla Scannicchio. Each brings new areas of expertise to our Board along with a passion for our mission.

With sincere gratitude, we thank you on behalf of our patients and team for the gifts of your time, talents and resources. We look forward to our continued partnership as we work together to improve Louisianans’ health outcomes, with comfort and exceptional care, today and for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Our Lady of the Lake Foundation

MORE THAN A BOARD MEMBER, MORE THAN A MOM

Katie Cheatham’s relationship with Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital is unique. She is not only a board member and donor but also a patient mom and active volunteer.

After she was born, Katie’s youngest child was diagnosed as failure to thrive and had to travel to New Orleans for medical care that led to a month-long hospital stay. Being with her baby meant she could not stay with her two older children, which was hardest on her then-3-year-old son. That experience lit a spark within Katie.

On one of her long drives back to New Orleans, Katie vowed to make that type of exceptional care available in Louisiana’s capital city, her hometown. Her fundraising efforts were instrumental in the creation of our children’s hospital in Baton Rouge, and as the hospital was being built her involvement with Our Lady of the Lake Foundation deepened.

As a patient mom and member of the Foundation board, Katie brings a unique perspective. She has served for three years so far, building on a decade of commitment to the Foundation’s goals, including her work to help shape the Junior League of Baton Rouge Family Resource Center. Katie has been instrumental in planning and fundraising for the annual Big Bash event, and more than $630,000 was committed in support of our Child Life program for this year’s celebration. Volunteering has become a family affair, with Katie’s children regularly helping at events. “As a very faith-based family, we teach our kids to find their gifts and use them to serve others,” she says. “A motto in our house is to have a servant’s heart, which is a legacy we want to hand down to our kids.”

A

COMMITMENT

TO CHILDREN’S HEALTH

BASF Pledges $150,000 to Louisiana Kids

Continuing their long-term partnership with Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health, BASF pledged $150,000 in programmatic support through directed giving and event sponsorship.

As part of its goal to meet social responsibility through community support, BASF’s multiyear commitment continues the company’s investment in pediatric healthcare across greater Baton Rouge.

“On behalf of our 1,200 employees in Louisiana and our families, I am pleased to share BASF’s continued investment in Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital to serve the special needs of children in our community,” says Kristen Pforr, BASF’s Vice President of Operations, Care Chemicals, and Our Lady of the Lake Foundation Board Member. “In addition to dollars, BASF employee volunteers will also support these crucial children’s programs that touch so many in need and help ensure success in our community’s future.”

One of the primary initiatives that will benefit from this gift is Child Life services, which is a key part of the family-centered environment.

The Child Life team helps children and their families cope, taking the fear out of hospital visits and procedures. Child Life specialists allow the hospital to become a not-so-scary place through play, age-appropriate preparation, education, and self-expression activities.

Child Life is an invaluable, non-billable service we provide to our families−philanthropy makes this essential offering possible. BASF’s gift will support Child Life personnel, program operations and the advancement of therapies.

BASF is also a long-time supporter of the Children’s Developmental Center at McMains and continues to champion the important work of developmental medicine. BASF employees regularly volunteer at McMains, working directly with children, and the company will support an annual event.

This gift builds on BASF’s unwavering support in building Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, where the pavilion bears the company’s name.

Supporting Children with Developmental Needs

All kids are amazing, and we work every day to ensure they live their healthiest, happiest lives. In February, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health expanded our developmental medicine service line with the acquisition of McMains Children’s Developmental Center, a nonprofit outpatient pediatric therapy clinic that has served the greater Baton Rouge area for nearly 70 years.

Now known as Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health Children’s Developmental Center at McMains, the center brings the expertise of occupational therapists, educational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, and other supporting staff to support children with developmental needs.

A MATTER OF THE HEART

Connecting Community Outreach and Clinical Research

As Our Lady of the Lake’s medical director of research, Dr. Hollis “Bud” O’Neal’s responsibilities include developing and improving access to experimental therapies while also providing opportunities for medical students and residents to learn how to effectively conduct research. The Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corporation (LWCC) Foundation launched its Louisiana Well Again grant program, which funds projects focused on reducing vulnerabilities within local communities and addressing pre-existing conditions. Through their generous grant of $40,000, Dr. O’Neal is able to replicate a landmark Cedars Sinai study that proved hypertension healthcare provided in convenient neighborhood settings has a positive impact on the Black community.

“Our Black population typically has higher rates of hypertension, complications and death,” Dr. O’Neal says. “It’s pretty disheartening to diagnose a young patient with end-stage renal disease needing to be placed on dialysis for the remainder of their life because they had high blood pressure that went undiagnosed or untreated.”

Dr. O’Neal gathered a team of local physicians and researchers with a goal of prevention and to help alleviate the cost of treatment. The result was the launch of the Capital Region Hypertension Outreach program, an innovative approach to care designed to address the delivery of hypertension management by partnering with local barbershops.

“Barbershops are community-based businesses that are frequented with consistency by their clients, making them a prime location for direct healthcare delivery and testing for things like hypertension and pre-hypertension,” Dr. O’Neal says.

Untreated hypertension can lead to kidney disease that can require dialysis, which is incredibly expensive. Once identified as needing treatment, patrons are invited to receive care via telehealth visits on their cell phones. Prescriptions can be mailed to their residence to make the process as easy as possible. “We proposed a possible solution to the problem of access to care by bringing healthcare to the population as opposed to bringing the population to healthcare,” Dr. O’Neal says.

“The impact for our community with this initiative is huge and directly ties to the mission of Our Lady of the Lake. Extending this to other places of business is a longterm goal of this program.”

TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE

Our Team Goes All Hands In

Team members from the guest service representatives who are the face of our hospitals and clinics, to our nurses and doctors who provide comprehensive, compassionate care, to those who are behind the scenes making sure our facilities are equipped and ready to receive more than 1.2 million patients a year, are nothing short of exceptional. They rally around each other, lifting each other up and ensuring our patients are at the forefront of all we do. Each year, team members go beyond giving of their time and talents and support Our Lady of the Lake through participation in our annual team member giving campaign.

Jeffrey Peno, RN, transport program coordinator for our Children’s Hospital Pediatric Transport Team, has been donating through Team Member Giving for 11 years. He says, “I continue to give through the Team Member Giving campaign because I see the effects of that generosity every day. My gift, along with the gifts of many of my fellow team members, improves first-hand the care we are able to deliver to the children of Louisiana and beyond. Not only do these gifts provide lifesaving equipment but also comfort items that make a difficult experience for a child and their family a little bit better.”

Over 500 team members participated in the All Hands In campaign, pledging $113,000 in support of the OLOL Fund, where 2021 campaign contributions directly impact the ALS Clinic, graduate medical education, our pediatric palliative care program as well as scholarship funding at FranU. In addition to donating, team members were encouraged to submit notes honoring the great work of their colleagues. The response was meaningful and heartfelt. Team member giving reflects the deep commitment to the impact Our Lady of the Lake makes in our community.

OLOL FUND

At Our Lady of the Lake, we are committed to building a healthier community for generations to come by providing a strong, statewide health network focused on innovation and care. The OLOL Fund provides flexibility to prioritize the needs of our patients and team members, react to unforeseen challenges and take advantage of opportunities that lie on the horizon for the Regional Medical Center and our Children’s Hospital.

5

Heroes in Healing members represent donors who, through a commitment of $1,000 or more annually to the OLOL Fund, accelerate excellence in healthcare and deepen our reach into the community. Through their partnership, the lives of patients and their families are transformed through advancements in treatment, thoughtful approaches to the patient and family experience, heightening our clinical expertise, and deepening our commitment to community and advocacy.

6

KIDS FIRST

Needles, using an inhaler for the first time, climbing into a cold machine that looks like a dark tunnel and makes loud noises—an adult would not think twice, but for a child, these moments can be scary!

Enter Child Life specialists. These technically trained team members work with patients and their families, using guided play with age-appropriate aids to help children understand their reasons for hospitalization; preparing, distracting, supporting, and accompanying children to procedures and surgeries; and providing education to help families navigate new diagnoses in an easy-to-follow manner.

7

Through The Big Bash, our annual signature event, held on April 28, 2022, more than $630,000 was contributed to support Child Life, this invaluable, non-billable resource. Proceeds from the event fund salaries, tools for guided play, and interactive resources like our closed-circuit TV system where patients can engage with each other and special guests. As we move forward, a portion of event proceeds will begin building an endowment to ensure this service will continue for generations to come.

Spirit of Children, the fundraising arm of the Halloween pop-up stores Spirit Halloween, aligns to supports Child Life programs at partner hospitals in the communities in which they serve. Since 2007 they have been fulfilling their mission to make hospitals less scary for kids and their families and have raised more than $93 million for Child Life programs at over 150 hospitals across the country. For the first time in 2021, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital was a recipient of costumes, accessories, and decorations as well as a percentage of sales from the Baton Rouge stores garnering over $60,000 in support.

WHY WE GIVE

Sharing the Fruits of Their Labor

Don and Jan Chance have consistently supported Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health for more than a decade, with their first gift to our Children’s Hospital capital campaign in 2011.

Since then, the Baton Rouge couple have continued to give generously, increasing their support with each annual gift.

Philanthropy is in the Chances’ nature, with a foundation of giving regularly starting as children in church. “It’s through our grandchildren and appreciating their future that we wanted to support good medical care and facilities in our community,” Jan says.

Recently they learned about giving through their individual retirement account (IRA) as part of their estate planning. These IRA distributions allow the Chances to see their giving in action now in support of their four favorite charities, including Our Lady of the Lake Foundation.

The Chances often choose to keep their donations unrestricted. This type of generosity allows organizations to react to unexpected needs that arise as well as plan for the future, ensuring the innovative, comprehensive, and compassionate care given at Our Lady of the Lake.

CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK

Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) has been supporting kids’ health through fundraising programs across its 170 member hospitals in the US and Canada. The organization has raised more than $7 billion through strategic partnerships and programs. CMN works with children’s hospitals in key locations and populations to ensure the best care for kids as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost. The reach of CMN is staggering: 62 children enter a CMN Hospital every minute; 1 in 10 children in North America are treated by a CMN Hospital each year; and 10 million kids are treated every year by CMN Hospitals.

A CMN member since 1989, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital has raised over $23 million in those 33 years through partner and program fundraising efforts. Funding from CMN initiatives stays local and has supported projects like building our facility, the purchase of equipment as well as meeting the daily needs of our patients, from rocking chairs to injury prevention programs.

FOUNDING CMN PRINCIPLES

• 100% of proceeds stay local to benefit local hospitals and kids

• Kids first and always

• Maintain the lowest cost ratio possible

• Dignity and class ... never exploiting sick or injured kids

PARTNERS WITH A PURPOSE

Walmart and Sam's Club have a basic belief—that every child deserves the chance to live better. In 1987, Sam Walton committed his company and its resources to raising money for children's hospitals with the promise that “the associates will amaze you.” This year 30 stores in the Baton Rouge region raised over $137,000 in support of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital through employee contests and fundraisers, register donations from the thousands of customers, and individual store community grants. In total, Walmart and Sam’s Club have donated over $3.6 million to our Children’s Hospital. Associates have been key to this success.

When asked why supporting Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital is so important, Katrina Weston, sales & training manager at Sam’s Club in Baton Rouge, says, “This cause is important to me because my daughter and I are no strangers to the Children’s Hospital. She was diagnosed with 20% kidney functionality in her left kidney, and it is significantly smaller than her right. It is located outside of her rib cage, so she will not be able to play any extreme sports. Organizations like CMN and hospitals such as Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital make it possible to help kids like mine. They are given another chance at life through its research and technology. They also inspire kids to look toward a future that may have not been possible without them.”

BEYOND THE ROUND-UP

For over 29 years, ACE Hardware has been our CMN partner and supported our Children’s Hospital through in-store promotions and events. As a corporation, ACE proudly carries out their motto of being the helpful place by giving back to the communities in which they do business and helping those

Beyond the local store involvement, ACE Foundation grants additional funds each year to children’s hospitals across the country. In March 2022, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital was awarded a grant in support of our new Palliative Care program, allowing us to better meet the needs of patients and families with life threatening and limiting illnesses and improve end-of-life care. The grant will provide bariatric beds in which the family members can lay with their child at end-of-life, multi-sensory machines to provide relaxed atmospheres, supplies and literature to support children and their families on difficult illnesses, death, and bereavement, as well as annual education for team members in end-of-life care.

PLAYING THE GREEN

South Louisiana is a special community, and many of the companies and organizations that call this region home support our Children’s Hospital. Having a little fun while making a difference is lagniappe!

Since 1958, Fore!Kids Foundation has raised money to support children’s service organizations through golf events. Because all administrative costs are absorbed through the PGA TOUR event, 100% of the donations and proceeds go directly to programs across the region, including Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Fore!Kids Foundation pledged $500,000 to help build our amazing Children’s Hospital and continue to support our work through the annual Zurich Classic.

BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY

Driving through the Greater Baton Rouge area, it is impossible not to pass a building built by MAPP Construction. They are rooted in our community. As a company, they are committed to being an active corporate citizen in the places where their team members live, work and play. MAPP was founded in 1991 and since 1994, has been supporting Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Through proceeds from the MAPP Annual Charity Golf Tournament, they supported building our hospital and named the playhouses in our garden, giving our patients a little fun and normalcy while in our care.

In addition to gifts raised through the golf tournament, MAPP supports our Child Life program, making certain our specialists have the tools and toys to continue their work.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY

At seven months old, Jensen LeBlanc came to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital with stridor, a high-pitched breathing sound that is caused by a restricted airway. He was later diagnosed with spasmodic croup and severe acid reflux, resulting in the need for major surgeries.

Jensen has spent many days and nights in our care, from emergency department visits to in patient surgeries — one thing that has remained constant is the love he receives from his care team who are now an extension of his family.

Wanting to ensure all kids receive the same care he receives; Jensen was on a mission to make a difference for our Children’s Hospital. As a first grader, Jensen eagerly walked into his principal’s office and requested, nicely, that they hold a fundraiser. His idea was that each student would give $5 to wear free dress and the donations would support our Children’s Excellence and Innovation Fund.

In 2021, Jensen raised $1,000, and this year he raised $1,500. Gifts from Jensen’s efforts have supported efforts in our Injury Prevention Program and the distribution of helmets.

As he starts third grade, Jensen is on another mission — to see LSU go to a National Championship AND continue his fundraising for our Children’s Hospital.

12

FUELING OUR FRONTLINE

The Cajun Navy stepped beyond the floodwaters and honored our team members to recognize the profound impact of COVID-19 and their tireless efforts in providing comprehensive, compassionate care. What started as local men and women answering a plea in 2005 to help rescue stranded New Orleanians after Hurricane Katrina has become a volunteer nation of hundreds who put their boats in the water whenever called upon.

The Cajun Navy 2016 goes beyond search and rescue. When the flood waters recede, these volunteers remain with their neighbors, organizing and providing supplies, meals, and shelter. In March 2022, 20 volunteers mobilized once again, this time parking outside of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center to prepare more than 1,000 meals for our team members across the Baton Rouge market. When asked why, the response was: “This sense of community is what makes Louisiana special!”

BUILDING A LEGACY TO HONOR BELLA’S MEMORY

Providing comfort care and support for families with children in the hospital is a key part of the mission of the Bella Bowman Foundation. Created in 2012 by Kim and Trey Bowman, the foundation honors their daughter’s memory and helped channel their grief after Bella’s death at age 8.

Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital took wonderful care of Bella at the end of her battle with brain cancer. Team members went above and beyond to give Bella special experiences and to make her family feel special, loved and cared for. With the Bella Bowman Foundation’s support, we are able to provide that same care for other families.

Bella’s name is prominent around the hospital as her foundation supported the building of our children’s hospital through naming Bella’s Breezeway on our oncology floor, an inpatient playroom, and Bella’s Room, which is used primarily for pediatric palliative care.

In addition to financial contributions, the Bella Bowman Foundation provides inkind donations and volunteer hours. Each month hundreds of Comfort Care bags are provided for our oncology pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) families. Useful items such as a roll of quarters for vending machines, toiletries, snacks and small toys make a significant difference to parents who find themselves unexpectedly in the units.

Special visitors, including princesses, superheroes and Star Wars characters regularly visit our Children’s Hospital and the foundation supports holiday celebrations throughout the year. Halloween was Bella’s favorite holiday, and the annual Bella Bowman Halloween event offers trick-or-treating, a carnival, and team member costume contest and lunch.

The Bella Bowman Foundation’s other areas of focus include creating and supporting research initiatives for pediatric brain cancer and supporting healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more at bellabowman.org.

HOLIDAYS MADE SWEET

When a family’s world is turned upside down because their child is admitted to the hospital many things fall away, including preparing for holidays. Junior League of Baton Rouge (JLBR) helps ease that burden for families by presenting the Sugar Plum Shoppe.

Each year, families who have an admitted child are welcomed to shop, ensuring the magic of the season is not lost for our young patients and their siblings. This gift selection experience is made possible by donations from the community. Shintech, a chemical company with facilities in Plaquemine and Addis organized a donation drive from multiple organizations, including the local fire station, that resulted in two truckloads of toys. Thanks to this ongoing generosity, Sugar Plum Shoppe is stocked with gift options to help ease the stress for families at our Children’s Hospital during the holidays.

More than 35 volunteers from JLBR come together over a 10-day period to make this experience happen, creating sweet decorations, organizing toys, helping to make selections and wrapping gifts. One dad who shopped this year expressed his sincere gratitude; a newly widowed parent, he had never had to wrap gifts before.

The Sugar Plum Shoppe builds on JLBR’s long-term volunteer partnership, which included a significant gift to the building of our Children’s Hospital and naming of the Junior League of Baton Rouge Family Resource Center. Junior League volunteers are on hand for activity days and special events. They are committed to our patients and their journey in healing.

THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE

Ensuring the future of healthcare in Louisiana and beyond, Our Lady of the Lake is committed to workforce development. Through key relationships with high schools in East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes, students can witness pathways to careers in bedside care and ancillary roles. Each summer we welcome Student Ambassadors, ages 15-17, to our hospitals. The four-week program helps these high school students learn more about healthcare careers and experience volunteering.

Our commitment to workforce development also focuses on partnerships with the area’s higher education institutions including Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University (FranU), Southern University, Baton Rouge Community College and LSU.

Serving as a clinical research site for more than 21 universities, including LSU and Tulane, Our Lady of the Lake covers nearly all specialties and subspecialties in both adult and pediatric medicine. As a branch campus for the LSU School of Medicine, we are consistently recognized as a national leader in implementing collaborative models for healthcare innovation. The LSU Medical Education & Innovation Center at Our Lady of the Lake is a technologically advanced facility that allows for live surgical learning and a state-of-the-art simulation lab and serves as the epicenter of graduate medical education in Baton Rouge.

In fall 2021, Our Lady of the Lake became official Championship Health Partners with LSU. This historic partnership will chart a new, long-term course to change the trajectory of health in Louisiana, catalyze innovation and economic development through research, lead in athletic excellence, build a more robust healthcare talent pipeline, expand STEM education, and partner with other Louisiana healthcare systems to achieve National Cancer Institute designation.
