OUR LADY OF THE LAKE FOUNDATION
IMPACT REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2023
Philanthropy is powerful. From first-time contributors to those who loyally support our work year after year, our community’s impact on our Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center is exceptional. Gifts have accelerated strategic investments that provide new and innovative ways of supporting the health and vitality of our community. In these pages you’ll find a variety of examples of giving, from Khanh T. Ho, MD, an exemplary board member who gives of her time, talents and treasure; to Hogs for the Cause, a non-profit whose transformative donation will allow us to soon open a family support home at Children’s. You will also learn how gifts help differentiate Our Lady of the Lake’s exceptional care. In 2023, we celebrated 100 years of Our Lady of the Lake’s commitment to the community. We are fortunate to have exceptional leaders in our hospitals as we begin the next century of care. We recently welcomed a new president of our Children’s Hospital, Jonathan Brouk, who brings vision, experience and thoughtful approaches in leading successful children’s health teams. Chuck Spicer, Our Lady of the Lake Health President, has brought new perspective and bold aspiration to our strategic plan. Leadership drives excellence, and we are excited to advance and grow our ministry of healing. We know you have options in where to invest your dollars. Your donations propel our mission of compassionate care to all, especially those most in need. I hope these stories bring to life the impact of your giving and the collective generosity of all our donors. On behalf of our patients and team, we extend our deepest gratitude. We look forward to continued partnership working together toward a brighter, healthier future for all. Sincerely,
Ann Marie Marmande President Our Lady of the Lake Foundation

CHAMPION OF COMPASSION AND PHILANTHROPY
In every definition of the word, Khanh T. Ho, MD, faithfully represents altruism. Her concern for the well-being of others is shown through the care of her patients as well as the ways in which she supports her community. Board Certified in rheumatology, Dr. Ho has a passion for science and problem-solving. She earned her medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, completed her residency in internal medicine at LSU School of Medicine at the Earl K. Long Hospital in Baton Rouge followed by a rheumatology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She returned to Baton Rouge knowing rheumatology was an underresourced specialty here and because Our Lady of the Lake physicians are among the best she ever worked with. “Louisiana is where I can make the most difference in patients’ lives,” she said. Dr. Ho has faithfully served as a member of Our Lady of the Lake Foundation Board for nearly eight years. During those three terms, she has been an advocate for the impact philanthropy can make, leading the launch of our leadership annual giving society and affirming the collective impact of donors. She serves as a role model for other board members, making time to attend every meeting and event. Her legacy will be felt for years to come.
“You, as an individual, can make a difference,” Dr. Ho said. “The involvement of each of us leads to change.” Reflecting on her service, Dr. Ho shares a pivotal moment that inspired her to join the board. Her best friend experienced a challenging pregnancy, and Dr. Ho helped her navigate the complexities of spina bifida. Witnessing the transformative power of specialized medical care her friend received in Texas led Dr. Ho to want to help bring that level of care here to Baton Rouge through the opening of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Dr. Ho is also a mixed-media artist and fierce supporter of the arts in Baton Rouge. Her work with the Baton Rouge Gallery reflects her belief in the power of art to unite our community. Dr. Ho’s commitment to local initiatives strengthened after the pandemic. “Giving generously is important,” Dr. Ho said. “Generosity, like art, is contagious.”

ELEVATING HEALTHCARE IN BATON ROUGE
For 100 years, the mission of Our Lady of the Lake Health has been to respond to the community’s greatest needs. In 1923, the need was a hospital. Since then, the need has been to provide the most up-to-date technology and healthcare right here in Baton Rouge. Our leaders both bring a clear vision of elevating access and experience in healthcare for our community.
CHUCK SPICER
In October 2022, Our Lady of the Lake Health welcomed Chuck Spicer as Our Lady of the Lake Health President. Spicer previously served as president and chief executive officer of OU Medicine in Oklahoma City. Spicer brings close to 30 years of knowledge and experience in healthcare administration and has a deep understanding of the emerging needs of a flagship medical center as well as our growing outpatient and physician clinic footprint. “I’ve been privileged to be part of this ministry for a year, 1% of Our Lady of the Lake’s first 100 years,” Spicer said. “It started with a commitment of the Sisters in Baton Rouge in 1923, and we will continue and accelerate as we begin the next 100!”
JONATHAN BROUK
In May 2023, Jonathan Brouk was named president of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health. An experienced pediatric healthcare executive and attorney with a corporate legal background, Brouk served as interim president from March and previously worked at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. Brouk oversees day-to-day operations of our Children’s Hospital and partners with leaders from Our Lady of the Lake and Children’s Hospital New Orleans to drive the strategy for pediatric healthcare across Louisiana. That affiliation, which began in January 2023, is allowing more Louisiana children to receive specialized pediatric inpatient, outpatient and surgical services closer to home. “We’re proving that doing the right thing to serve the most vulnerable patients in our community can be financially sustainable,” Brouk said.

Through a gift of $1,000 or more to the OLOL Fund, the generosity of donors who help further the mission and ministry of our hospitals is celebrated. Donors receive: • A deeper connection with our ministry Laurie Allen, Troy & LaDonna Williams
• An invitation to an annual event with Our Lady of the Lake leaders
BUILDING A COMMUNITY
• Quarterly leadership and impact communications
The collective impact of a community of donors is profound. Since October 2021, the Heroes in Healing giving society members have given more than $200,000 in support of the OLOL Fund. Resources provide leadership with the flexibility to prioritize the needs of our patients and team, react to unforeseen challenges and take advantage of opportunities that lie on the horizon for our Regional Medical Center and Children’s Hospital. The inaugural year impact focused on excellence in trauma, where every moment matters. Both our Regional Medical Center and Children’s Hospital are trauma centers designated by the American College of Surgeons. This equates to robust acute care 24/7 for every aspect of injury, as well as leadership in education, research and system planning. Our Lady of the Lake is the only adult Level I trauma center in the Capital Region — one of only three in Louisiana, as well as one of two pediatric designated trauma centers in the state, with the other in Shreveport. Through membership donations, two pieces of equipment were purchased and are now

in service. At our Children’s Hospital, our new pediatric ENT cart holds a multitude of scopes that can fit the tiniest infants and the largest teens. With comprehensive tools in one place, our team can quickly access emergent airways and intubate exponentially faster. Lovingly named Betty by our adult trauma team, a second rapid infuser was purchased for the emergency department (ED) at the Regional Medical Center. Because we have the same equipment in the operating room (OR), it allows for a seamless transition when moving patients from ED to OR, increasing patient safety and creating measurable staff efficiencies. Some of the most prevalent trauma cases are accidents with pedestrians and bicyclists versus motor vehicles. Blood loss is often considerable; the rapid infuser saves countless lives. The inaugural year impact is already making a meaningful difference in our teams’ ability to treat life-threatening traumas quickly and expertly. Moments indeed matter.

JUST LAST YEAR... BEYOND THE HOSPITAL DOORS
Just outside Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital stands a house…that pigs built. With a commitment of $2.25 million from Hogs for the Cause, we are building a place of respite for families during the days, weeks or even months of their child’s stay. On Valentine’s Day the groundbreaking of the Hogs for the Cause Family Support Home at our Children’s Hospital was celebrated. To be known as “Hogs House,” the facility will mark a significant step forward in fulfilling our mission of providing compassionate, comprehensive care. With 12 private family suites, shared indoor and outdoor spaces, and multiple amenities, it will bring a positive and calming environment. “We hope that the Family Support Home will lessen families’ financial, emotional and physical burdens while they focus on the healing of their children,” said Becker Hall, co-founder and chief executive officer of Hogs for the Cause. Hogs for the Cause is a New Orleans-based non-profit raising funds through an annual barbecue competition and festival as well as local events in our community. The Hogs House will open to our families in early 2024.

WHY I GIVE: PASTOR RONNIE AND SOONJA WILLIAMS “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26
This is a passage Pastor Ronnie Williams has followed in all his life’s endeavors. The son of a farmer in Woodworth, LA, a few miles south of Alexandria, Williams graduated from Peabody High School and went on to LSU, graduating with a Business Education degree in 1974. He is a Vietnam era veteran. He was hired in 1975 at Exxon Plastics and moved up in the ranks over a 12-year tenure. Williams credits his bride, SoonJa, with possessing an unwavering belief in his own abilities and dreams, even if they seemed far-fetched to others. Embarking on a journey of faith and self-discovery, he recognized that providing knowledge and guidance to others was his true purpose and left behind his lucrative career to open Camelot College on Wooddale Boulevard in Baton Rouge in 1986. His tenacity, determination to fulfill God’s calling for his life drove Camelot to grow quickly into a regional certificate program graduating over ten thousand individuals to date and now exclusively offering virtual online training in Administrative Medical Assistant and other medical related courses since 2020. In 1997, he was called again, this time to become a pastor stating, “my life is your life, Almighty God!” Over the years, the Williams family has supported Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and in 2021 became inaugural members of the Heroes in Healing giving society in which members collectively support innovative endeavors at the Regional Medical Center as well as our Children’s Hospital. One such endeavor is the expansion of Music Therapy across the Baton Rouge market. Knowing the power of music, Williams was moved to make an additional gift in support of the program. Through a personal commitment by the Williams family, coupled with additional donations, the Regional Medical Center will soon offer patients, families and team members a place of respite with the installation of a player piano in the lobby of the Heart & Vascular Institute.
“Christian music transforms the soul.” —Pastor Ronnie Williams
Through the teachings of God’s Word in Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you...” Ronnie and Soonja Williams hope to impart philanthropy in their children and grandchildren and inspire others to listen to their inner voice, pursue their passions and to embrace the transformative potential of a life dedicated to serving others.
HONORING A LEGACY
Dwayne Anderson, MD, was an exceptional physician, colleague, mentor and teacher to the Baton Rouge and New Orleans medical communities. A gifted and dedicated neurointerventional radiologist, he sought innovative approaches to practice and promoted a collaborative environment in treating patients. A native of Baton Rouge, Dr. Anderson graduated from Drexel University Medical School in 1990 and completed fellowship programs at Harvard University and Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. For 22 years, he was a member of Radiology Associates and practiced at Our Lady of the Lake. Dr. Anderson passed away on February 17, 2023. In June, his partners at Radiology Associates established a fund to honor the life and work of their colleague and friend. With a gift of $500,000, the Dr. Dwayne Anderson Memorial Excellence Fund was established. The purpose is to celebrate Dr. Anderson’s legacy of distinction in treatment, scholarship, and team culture and to advance his aspirations for the profession. It will be used to invest in the environment and the staff associated with imaging services, including space functionality, new technology, program enhancements, lectures, as well as leadership, learning and recognition opportunities.
COASTAL SCIENTIST’S LEGACY OF GIVING South Louisiana pulled Charlie Milan into its arms and never let go. A New Jersey native, Milan came to Louisiana more than 40 years ago to study and explore the Louisiana coast. Receiving a master of science degree from the LSU Department of Marine Sciences in 1978, he serves as a research associate in that department and has studied the coastal wetlands for decades. Contemplating his legacy, Milan wanted to find a way to impact his community with hopes and expectations that his giving will allow organizations to continue working toward the greater good. His ultimate goal: to help individuals who cannot help themselves. Milan identified Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, where more than 70% of the patients are uninsured or under-insured and our mission to provide the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, especially to those most in need, as a cause worth supporting. Through his estate, Milan has planned two types of gifts. To see the impact of his giving now, he takes the required minimum distribution from his retirement account to make annual gifts. In addition, Milan has named our Children’s Hospital as the beneficiary of his Traditional IRA. “Anyone can make a difference,” Milan said. “Seek professional advice to know which best fits your philanthropic goals.” The Foundation offers a range of planned giving options that can help donors make a lasting impact on the work we do. To learn more about how these can align with your personal financial goals and philanthropic desires, we encourage you to contact Eric Guerin at eric.guerin@fmolhs.org.

BREAKING RECORDS Driving the Future
Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital held another record-breaking Driving the Future car raffle, with more than $1.6 million given. Over its 13-year history and more than $13.5 million contributed, proceeds have supported building our Children’s Hospital and expanding care for children in Louisiana and the region. For the third year in a row, Driving the Future was presented by Geico – Your Local Office. Additional sponsors include KidStrong, Cox Media, Campus Federal Credit Union and Aetna. Longtime partners include Price LeBlanc, WAFB-TV and iHeart Media. The annual fundraiser raffles five Lexus vehicles — five cars, five winners! Tickets were purchased from individuals across 39 U.S. states; this year all five winners hailed from the Greater Baton Rouge area.
The Big Bash On May 4, 2023, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital hosted The Big Bash 20th Shellebration. Started in 2003 as a garden party with 250 guests, this year’s sold-out event welcomed more than 800 guests in the Dow Hangar at the Baton Rouge Airport for an undersea experience. The fundraiser was a record-breaking evening with more than $1 million contributed in support of Child Life Services. KidStrong was the presenting sponsor for the evening. Top sponsors included Bartlett Group, Children’s Hospital New Orleans, Dow, Doyle Electric, MMR Group, Milton J. Womack, Inc., and SASSO.

At the event, guests were taken on the journey of Wyatt LeBlanc, a patient who in 2021 came to the hospital via airmed to our trauma unit after a dirt bike accident. Staying with us for five weeks, the LeBlanc family leaned on Child Life specialists for everything from information about procedures to celebrating Wyatt’s birthday while in the hospital and relieving fears as he took first steps towards his future.
“Our children’s hospital provides lifesaving care to families right here at home each day regardless of their ability to pay. The support of donors through events like Driving the Future and The Big Bash allows us to continue fulfilling our mission to bring the Spirit of Healing to the patients and families we are privileged to serve.” — Ann Marie Marmande, president of Our Lady of the Lake Foundation
