Dear Friends and Supporters,

As the year draws to a close, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of 2024. Thanks to your continued support, this year has been one of remarkable growth, connection, and a deeper celebration of our rich Western heritage.

From our exciting exhibits to the many events we hosted, we have worked hard to create a space where history comes to life and where the traditions of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ continue to be cherished.

In 2024, we introduced several new exhibits, including honoring the Year of the Cowgirl and celebrating our Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Hall of Fame inductees with a new, larger space. We were also honored to host the A.R. Mitchell traveling exhibit, which is currently on display in the Museum. Additionally, we are proud of the educational programs we’ve offered to local schools and families, helping to engage young minds and inspire future generations.

Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited about the future of the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum. We remain committed to preserving and sharing the legacy of the West while embracing innovation and fresh ideas to engage new generations. From expanding our outreach to enhancing our exhibits, our goals for the upcoming year reflect our vision to ensure that the Museum remains a vital cultural landmark for years to come. Currently, we are finishing the final stages of our three-year strategic plan.

We are also thrilled to announce that we are moving forward with Phase II of our Capital Campaign efforts. Phase II will include the development of a new Education Room, a Kitchen/ Breakroom, and the reconfiguration of our current kids’ room into a functional space for art shows, exhibits, and collections. As we move forward with these renovations, we are focused on both functionality and enhancing the visitor experience while being mindful of our resources. A heartfelt thank you to all of our donors for their generosity during this process.

I want to express my deepest gratitude for your ongoing support. Whether you are a member, donor, visitor, or volunteer, your dedication to preserving our Western heritage helps us fulfill our mission every day.

We wish you a joyous holiday season filled with peace, love, and time with family and friends. Thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to another exciting year together in 2025.

Warm Regards,

tours and trunK or treats

We started off the Fall season with a wonderful Historic Ranch Tour at the Harding Ranch near Meriden. The tour was led by Kiel Harding who runs the ranch with his brother. It’s a very scenic place that specializes in true “Ranch to Table” beef and specialty produced beef. Kiel even gave each attendee a package of their beef sticks to sample. They were delicious!

Ron Swearingen was the guest instructor for our Art Uncork’d in September. Under his tutelage we learned how to work with chalk pastels and created butterflies and landscapes. This relaxing night included some tasty beverages and hors d’oeuvres.

October 25th gifted us with beautiful weather for our fourth annual Wild West Trunk or Treat. Association of General Contractors partnered with us to provide the little goblins, ghouls, pirates, and princesses, to name a few, some heavy equipment to explore while they went from trunk to trunk collecting candy. Thank you to our sponsors AGC & Cheyenne Frontier Days™ along with everyone who participated or donated candy!

exciting expansions on the horizon

Phase II of our BECOME A LEGEND Capital Campaign

Exciting Museum Renovation Projects Are Underway!

With the successful completion of Phase I in 2023, we’re thrilled to kick off Phase II of our Become A Legend Capital Campaign. Our second round of construction is fueled by an incredible $1.9M in available funds for these projects! These resources will bring transformative updates to the Museum, enhancing our facilities and providing an exceptional visitor experience.

Here’s what’s on the horizon:

Kitchen/Breakroom Renovation: A Space Built to Serve

We’re starting with an exciting transformation of the former Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Inc. HQ conference room into a versatile kitchen and staff breakroom area. This dual-purpose area will include catering support for our important events with a modern, fully equipped kitchen for incoming caterers.

Double doors will lead into the Carriage Hall for seamless catering access. New appliances will include refrigerators, an ice maker, a dishwasher, an expanded countertop area for food prep, and storage space. An updated electrical system will support the new amenities.

The project will improve accessibility, allowing caterers to use the store parking lot for easy entry. Also, the staff will enjoy a new space to grab a quick meal and a cozy space for our team to unwind. The added storage space is a huge bonus to support this continued need.

The anticipated completion date is July 2025, just in time for our 2025 CFD Western Art Show & Sale. Once again, our partner in this Phase is TDSI as support in the architectural and design capacity. We appreciate their vision for this Phase. Contractor bids are currently being sought.

Education Room Expansion: Inspiring the next generation

Education takes center stage with the relocation and expansion of our Education Area to the former Cheyenne Frontier Days™ retail store space. The increased space will feature a Dedicated Youth Program, ideal for children’s camps, school tours, and special events.

An Adaptable Public Programming Space will be perfect for hosting activities like Art Uncork’d and Bingo. Planned improvements for this area include fresh flooring, paint, lighting, and the addition of a sink area. Adding windows will improve the natural light and enhance the atmosphere, which will be welcomed.

The project will include installing new access doors and converting the old Vandewark reception area into interactive exhibits for children, completing the transformation of this space. With substantial donor support earmarked for this purpose, this project emphasizes the importance of engaging younger generations in preserving Western heritage. This portion of Phase II is anticipated to be completed in the Fall of 2025.

Reimagining the Hole in The Wall Kids’ Room:

A New Role for old space

The current kids’ room will be repurposed into a flexible workspace for collections, exhibits, and art shows. This change will allow for secure storage and careful handling of exhibits while minimizing disruptions to other Museum areas.

Thank You for Your

Support!

These ambitious projects wouldn’t be possible without our donors’ generosity and our community’s dedication. Together, we’re building a brighter future for the Museum that will inspire, educate, and delight visitors as a vital cultural resource for generations to come.

Get ready to watch our vision come to life. Stay tuned to our next Stageline edition for updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses as we continue to transform the Museum for the future!

What’s New at the Museum? Exciting Exhibits Coming in 2025!

As we wrap up another incredible year, the Museum is already buzzing with plans for 2025! Behind every great exhibit is a story waiting to be told, and we’re excited to share a glimpse of what’s in store for the year ahead.

Behind the Scenes with CFD Committees

Have you ever wondered what it takes to make Cheyenne Frontier Days™ the “Daddy of ‘Em All”? Spoiler alert: it’s a whole lot of heart and hard work. Our new exhibit will shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes—the volunteers of CFD’s committees. From year-round planning to the all-hands-on-deck effort during rodeo week, these folks keep the gears turning. Curious about how the Parades Committee orchestrates those stunning floats or how the Rodeo Committee prepares for world-class competition? You’ll have to come see for yourself!

The Evolution of Cheyenne Frontier Days™

Where did it all begin? How has the world’s largest outdoor rodeo evolved since 1897? These are just some of the questions we’ll answer in our History of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ exhibit. Perfect for longtime fans and first-time visitors alike, this exhibit dives into why Cheyenne became home to this legendary event and explores the moments that shaped its legacy. Whether you’re here to relive fond memories or discover what makes CFD a global phenomenon, there’s something for everyone.

Discover Hidden Gems

Did you know the museum adds dozens of new items to its collection every month? Our upcoming Recent Acquisitions exhibit will feature a rotating selection of the coolest, most intriguing pieces we receive throughout the year. From vintage rodeo gear to unique memorabilia, you never know what treasures you might find!

Honoring Don and Arlene Kensinger

Don and Arlene Kensinger were true champions of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ and the Museum. To honor their legacy, we’re unveiling a special exhibit and digital kiosk celebrating their contributions. Featuring photos, artifacts, and a dedicated section on our website, this project ensures their impact will be remembered for generations to come.

We can’t wait to share these exhibits with you in 2025. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer—and be ready to rediscover the magic of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ like never before!

A New Friendship with the A. R. Mitchell Museum

A new partnership has been formed with a Museum in Trinidad, Colorado. The A. R. Mitchell Museum and the CFD Old West Museum have been joining forces. A. R. Mitchell put together their first traveling exhibit and we are honored to be the very first hosts.

On October 22, the Old West Museum hosted a special reception to unveil the traveling exhibit to the public. In attendance, we had the Director of the A. R. Mitchell Musuem, Allyson Sheumaker and Board President Cody Kuehl.

At this special event, both Allyson and Cody spoke about curating the collection and shared the story of A. R. Mitchell’s life. They both also shared how excited they were about our new partnerships.

Haven’t checked out the exhibit yet? The A. R. Mitchell Traveling Exhibit is at the Museum until January 20.

This partnership has led to some exciting moments, including Brad recieving a tour of the A. R. Mitchell Museum in Trinidad and Curtis and Amanda attending their recent Gala.

When the Old West Museum agreed to host their first traveling exhibit, the A. R. Mitchell Museum graciously invited members of the Old West Museum’s staff to their Gala Fundraiser Western Ball down in Trinidad on the evening of October 19th. Curtis and Amanda were able to make the trip and attend the gala and had the time of their lives!

The evening began with Cody Kuehl greeting them both as they arrived and found their seats. What followed was a wonderful evening filled with a fantastic buffet of food, great drinks, a fun silent auction, and wonderful live music.

The A. R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art occupies space in historic downtown Trinidad and showcases A. R. Mitchell’s artifacts and works of art along with those of his teacher and his fellow artists that he interacted with. The Museum also holds a section where artists of the current day can showcase and sell their own works of art. Each section of the Museum’s galleries are well designed and utilize impressive systems of lighting, unique exhibit floor plans, and movable walls that don’t stand out but breathed new life into the galleries creating new enclosures of art in the building’s previously empty spaces. Other movable walls within the galleries are designed to dare you to view what is displayed on them.

As Curtis and Amanda looked through all the Museum’s galleries during that evening, they found many masterpieces that made them stop in their tracks. The Museum has an open and inviting layout (perfect for the

many events they also rent the space out for throughout the year), and among Mitchell’s works of art in the galleries are artifacts from old local Spanish church sites, a re-creation of Mitchell’s art studio, and a wonderful student art section where students, local artists, and other various art amateurs are invited to take an original photo of Mitchell’s and create their own artistic interpretation of it. The Museum did a wonderful job laying this section out, as they hung a print of the original Mitchell photo alongside each new interpretation that each artist created. The mediums of these pieces were also wildly creative and unique, with one interpretative piece created from carpet fragments that honestly captured the spirit of the original photo quite well!

In the middle of the evening, Cody Kuehl, other board members, and Museum staff gave guests a behind-the-scenes tour of some of their storage spaces in the building’s basement, where guests were able to see how the Museum organizes, catalogs, and searches through all of Mitchell’s archives and belongings. This includes Mitchell’s firearms and the vast collection of art that the Museum has in their possession.

A. R. Mitchell was an artist that never liked to sell his paintings or give them up, so the Museum stewards most of his entire life’s work, everything from photographs to rough, early draft sketches for magazine covers, to original paintings and amazing charcoal sketches. It seemed like no matter the medium or process, Mitchell could do it and do it well! The tour gave a new vision of the impressive scope of this collection and a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how this Museum curates their gallery space.

The staff of the A. R. Mitchell Museum made sure to introduce themselves and were gracious and kind, answering any questions about their gallery, the works of art in their collection, and about Mitchell himself. The feats they accomplish are amazing. They are as excited about our new partnership as we are! We look forward to continuing to work with them and we can’t wait for our next visit to Trinidad! We encourage you all to take a

look at their Museum, especially if you are a fan of what you see in their traveling exhibit currently on display right here at the CFD Old West Museum. If you think the pieces here are fantastic, then you won’t believe what awaits you in Trinidad!

Recently, the Old West Museum lost two very dear friends. Linda Dillon, our first museum director and Mary Weppner, one of our founding members have departed. These two women have left an indelible mark on the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum and they both deserve to be recognized.

Linda Dillon - May 16, 1947-October 18, 2024

Linda Dillon was born here in Cheyenne in 1947 as the third child of Dorothy and Harold Dillon. She graduated from Cheyenne High School and began working as assistant manager and office manager for two local loan offices, followed by a brief engagement as a secretary for the Wyoming Division of Forestry.

In 1972, Linda was hired by the Wyoming Travel Commission where she worked for Randy Wagner, Gene Bryan and five other division directors. In 1973, she played a pivotal role in coordinating the annual Wyoming Air Tour and the national convention of the Society of American Travel Writers, proving beyond doubt her remarkable organizational skills. As Gene Bryan would later write: “I found then and there she was one of those individuals who when they said they would do a job, you could consider it done.”

Gene held Linda in such high regard that when he was hired on as Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Executive Secretary in 1979, he hired Linda away from the Wyoming Travel Commission to become the first coordinator for the new Old West Museum.

“Even though she had no professional training

in museum management, she enthusiastically embraced the challenge and “organized a summer staff of college-age students, kept the museum books, organized and coordinated the new displays and exhibits, supervised construction of two new rooms to the Museum and did it all with a minimum of supervision and direction. She saw a job and did it” according to Bryan.

It was during this time that she began her association with Mary Weppner, who in 1979 was serving as president of the Cheyenne Women’s Civic League – one of the founding member organizations of the Museum. Their mutual involvement began when the Women’s Civic League donated three thousand dollars for a new security system for the fledgling institution. It would not be their last.

In 1981, the Old West Museum hired its first professional director and Linda Dillon assumed other duties. These included being part of the CFD staff responsible for transcribing the minutes of the General Committee, handling their correspondence, preparing the national newsletter for the Association of Rodeo Committees and managing the ARC membership rolls. One last, and significant responsibility, was to be the coordinator for the new Governor’s Invitational Western Art Show and Sale.

In this new position, Linda would oversee the efforts of the brand-new Art Show Committee while assuming many important duties of her own. Her responsibilities were broad but focused again on the organizational details of the event as well as maintaining communication with artists and buyers alike. For the show itself, Linda managed the budget, produced the Art Show catalog, arranged for advertisements and coordinated the volunteer crews. The records of sales were her responsibility and she assisted in taking down and shipping the artwork. For all of her efforts, the artists developed a deep friendship with her. Of this relationship, Gary and Suzie Morton wrote:

Portrait of Linda Dillon from the paper

Linda instantly became everyone’s friend and rightly so. Whatever situation you may have gotten yourself into, whether it be lost paintings, late consignment sheets, too few rodeo tickets or a number of other things artists get themselves into. You always knew that a phone call to Linda would begin the process to correct the situation. We don’t know of one person who doesn’t feel the same way. Linda was very efficient in her position. She always took care of the artists and spouses and made them feel at home…”

As may be surmised, Linda was a tremendous asset to the Art Show, Cheyenne Frontier Days™ and the Old West Museum through the many years she worked for the organizations through 1988. From her role at our Museum, Linda went on to work for First National Bank, Wallick and Volk, Unicover Corporation and Sierra Trading Post before retiring in 2017.

Mary Weppner - July 18, 1940 - November 23, 2024

Mary Weppner seemed destined to become involved with the Old West Museum from a young age. Born in Cheyenne to Robert G. and Elizabeth Whitaker Caldwell, Mary came from a ranching legacy that began when her maternal grandfather, Dugald Whitaker, came from England to start his ranch in Wyoming in 1895 at Horse Creek. Both of Mary’s parents volunteered for CFD and she got her first taste of the volunteer lifestyle when she rode with her father in her first parade. In that instance, her father was the driver of the Dr. Crook Carriage. This carriage had (and still has) the long tradition having a stork with a “special delivery” suspended in front.

For fun, her father placed another sign on the carriage reading “Up for Adoption.” Mary thought he meant to give her away and cried all the way through the parade.

The feared surrender never happened and Mary continued to live in Cheyenne, attending Fincher Grade School, McCormick Junior High, and finally graduating from Cheyenne High School. In the fall of 1959, while she was attending Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, Mary received a letter from Charles D. Carey stating that she had been selected to be Lady-In-Waiting for the 1960 Cheyenne Frontier Days™, and that the Committee awaited her letter of acceptance. Her parents had been contacted previously to see if they would agree to her participation, and they were happy to accept. So was Mary.

In 1961, Mary received a second letter, this time from O.N. “Dutch” Buckles, asking her if she would accept being Miss Frontier (it was not an automatic assumption that the L.I.W. would be the next year’s Miss Frontier) with April Belecky serving as her Lady-in-Waiting. Mary again was happy to accept the crown. She and April had many adventures together, including one where the new Security Committee took their job so seriously that she had difficulty gaining access to the rodeo. She had to find a chairman to let her in. Of the many happier memories about her reign, her interactions with Princess Blue Water were some of the best. With their many adventures together that year, Mary and April developed a close and enduring friendship.

After her reign, Mary attended the University of Wyoming where she studied education and speech. Mary married Ed Weppner in 1963 and returned to the family ranch where she and her husband continued the family business and raised three children. Both Mary and Ed were avid CFD volunteers and inculcated their three children with a similar passion for the celebration and public service. Mary was deeply involved with the Laramie County Cowbelles, the DePaul Guild, P.E.O., the Wyoming Cattlewoman’s Association, Cowgirls of the West and Cheyenne Women’s Civic League. She excelled in her leadership skills and it was

Mary (Caldwell) Weppner 1961 Miss Frontier Portrait

Collections

in her capacity as president of the Cheyenne Women’s Civic League that she began her association with Linda Dillon (as was previously mentioned).

Organizing the Women’s Civic League’s support for the Museum was only part of her deep involvement in creating the new institution. Her name appears boldly on a plaque here at the Museum as one of the first people to donate $1,000 as a founding member. Her engagement continued for decades as she served as a volunteer and member of the Board of Directors, which she first joined in 1977 – a year before the grand opening. In those early years, she donated a day a week to the Museum and she worked diligently to recruit and organize volunteers to help the institution thrive.

In 1979, Mary was invited to join the W-Heels to assist in costuming the parade participants. Rubbing shoulders with people like Mary Elizabeth Carpenter, Marietta Dinneen, Shirley Flynn, Louise Cole and many others, Mary’s love of vintage costumes grew. For many years Mary did extra duty volunteering to care for and manage the large textiles collection at the Museum with a large group of her friends known as the “Textile Ladies.” She would eventually be chairman for the W-Heels between the years 1988 and 1990.

Before this happened, Mary too became involved with the first Governor’s Invitational Art Show and Sale which debuted in 1981. Mary worked alongside Linda Dillon, April and T.V. Jones and Jon Kirkbride. Mary initially had responsibility for managing the bar and food for the event and eventually moved towards invitations and tickets. There were not high expectations for the first show, with common knowledge predicting that it would take five years for an art show to make money. Thanks to the constant effort of this first committee, the first Governor’s Invitational Art Show cleared $113. From that point forward, the show met with considerable acclaim and financial success and has raised millions in support of the Museum. Mary continued to work on the Western Art Show Committee

through 2015.

Along with her involvement, her family was at her side. Ed served as Contract Acts Chairman from 1984 to 1987, served as the Arena Director for the Night Show for many years and was deeply engaged with the parade carriages. Their daughters Ginny and Tricia both served as Dandies and their son Rob worked the arena since his teenage years. Tricia followed her mother’s footsteps and served as Miss Frontier in 1994.

Linda Dillon and Mary Weppner together made incalculable contributions to the success of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ and that of the newborn CFD Old West Museum. Had it not been for their dedication and abiding passion for our institution, we would not have had the great successes we have experienced over the last four and a half decades. Both women were visionaries whose guiding hand has left us an incredible legacy. For their contribution, we can express no limit of gratitude.

As the weather cools down, the programming committee slows down (a little). This Fall was packed full of fun events!

October 3 - Thankful Thursday

We had another successful Thankful Thursday, raising $17,251 to help with Museum operations! Thank you to all our donors, attendees, and supporters.

October 4 - Paranormal Tours Night 1

Spooky Season started early for the Museum as Haunting Across America came back with Paranormal Tours. This year we pulled special items from the collection that the Paranormal Team selected including a single spur, an old award plate, and our resident spooky doll. Tour guests learned about the different equipment used to find paranormal activity and had a terrifying time.

October 17 - Costume Bingo

Bingo night with a spooky twist, everyone wore their Halloween costumes! We had some cute and some scary costumes and prizes were given for the best individual costume and best couple. Congratulations to our winners, a packet of ketchup and Shaggy and Velma! Thank you to everyone who dressed up and came out to a festive evening. Overall, it was a great event with lots of costumes, prizes, and fun!

October 25 - Paranormal Tours Night 2

A fright so nice, they come back twice. Haunting Across America came back for a second night, closer to Halloween. This was a sold out tour! Guests this second night got to see the same items with the addition of some pieces of WWI military uniforms. A huge thanks to all our attendees and our investigators, Haunting Across America. If you missed out this year, try to catch the spooky thrills next October!

of Hall of

Fame Legend

Chuck Baley In Memory

Help us honor our legends.

While we strive to honor the legacies of our Hall of Fame members, we don’t always learn of their passing in a timely manner. If you hear of the passing of a Hall of Fame member, please let us know so we can properly honor their memory. Thank you for helping us celebrate these remarkable individuals.

The CFD Old West Museum would like to remember another member of the CFD Hall of Fame that has departed. Chuck Baley, inducted into the CFD Hall of Fame in 2011, passed away on December 4.

Chuck grew up in Pine Bluffs and came to CFD on many occasions with his father. He fell in love with the spectacle of the show and was destined to be a part of it for more than six decades. His first direct involvement began in 1952 when he was sixteen years old when he signed on as an outrider for the chuck wagon racing team led by Henry Peterson. He remembered the wild times as part of the Peterson team and became intimately aware of the dangers and thrills of competition. Eventually, Chuck started his own chuck wagon racing team and worked side by side with Peterson until 1967.

Baley’s involvement with the rodeo expanded further when he signed on as a pick-up man with Harry Vold in 1977 and again when his love of horses and driving teams pulled him into the orbit of the Bruegmans and the parade committee. For many years, Chuck would arrive at the parade lot and survey the harnesses, rigging and reigns to ensure that everything was safe. He would also drive teams, sometimes twenty animals strong, just for fun, in the Grand Entry. A typical day would have him hitch up or saddle seventy-five animals, ride the parade, and be back in time to begin his important work as a pick-up man for the rodeo. Safety was his first concern no matter his role for Cheyenne Frontier Days™.

Baley recalled that Vold taught him everything he knew about the rodeo. Chuck frequently said “I must be doing something right to still be with him.” Chuck had the privilege of working with many other great pick-up men like Billy Christenson, Bill Larsen, Chuck Halloway and Brad Churchill. To say that he was trusted was an understatement as he usually travelled with Harry Vold to thirty-six rodeos a year including Dodge City, Odessa, El Paso, Tulsa, Fort Smith, Prescott, Pendleton, Billings and the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs. Rain or shine, Chuck could always be counted on to get the job done.

Baley finally retired from his pick-up man duties in 1995 yet continued to run stock for many years. He took time off for a year after being seriously injured in 1996 when he got bucked off his horse. Chuck was still a common sight around CFD during the early 2000s and had a great time spending time with his many friends.

Cheyenne Frontier Days™ and the entire rodeo community has been diminished by the passing of this legendary cowboy.
