As the School’s 500th Anniversary draws ever nearer we are keen to ensure that as many Old Mancunians as possible can share in the celebrations. It would be helpful if you could encourage friends to attend the events which are being arranged and also – with their permission – to share with us their contact details.

Everyone will remember the statue of Hugh Oldham which stood at the Telfer Road entrance to the School – often holding in his hand an empty ice cream cone or something less salubrious! I am pleased to report that the statue has now been relocated and refurbished through the financial support of the OMA. Our founder now surveys the Main Quadrangle, still encouraging his successors – both boys and staff – to dare to be wise.

Thanks for your help with careers

Sefton reaches his half – century!

The School is grateful to Adrian Bull (73-80) for mentoring four prospective engineers. Adrian led a series of lunchtime tutorials which culminated in the boys visiting the National Nuclear Laboratory to pitch to a panel of industry experts about plans for a new nuclear power station.

Sefton Samuels (42-47) has completed his half-century of photographs of notable Old Mancunians that are displayed along the corridors at the School. Sefton is known for his photojournalistic portrayal of northern England and was described by painter LS Lowry as his favourite photographer.

The Founding Partner of GP Bullhound, Hugh Campbell (84-91), invited the School to be academic sponsors of the Northern Tech Awards held at the Lowry Hotel in April.

Hugh mentored a team of 6th formers to research the fastest growing tech companies in the North of England and has subsequently offered 3 summer internships to pupils at the School.

Fifty images of Old Mancunians ‘at the top of their game’ are now lining the corridors at the School, including photographs of Sir Ben Kingsley, Lord Fink and younger OMs such as Mark Chapman and Mark Chilton. Many OMs still remain to be photographed and the Development Office is always open to suggestions of new OM targets!

Anthony Preston (66-73), founder of Pets at Home, was the keynote speaker at this year’s Careers Fair. Over 30 Old Mancunians delivered industry-specific talks on the night to current pupils and their parents.

Sefton has over a century of photos in national galleries, including a staggering 68 images in the National Portrait Gallery alone.

Jazz Legends: Up Close is Sefton’s latest book which captures musicians lost in intense concentration as they perform.

The School and the Old Mancunian community owe Sefton a debt of gratitude for the time and effort that he has freely given over a number of years. When you visit the School in 2015, please do take the time walk the corridors and look at the gallery, if only to see how far some of your old class mates have come.

Leaders behind the Leaders Richard Hytner (himself a former CEO, now Deputy Chairman of Saatchi and Saatchi and OM 70-77) has authored a new book.

Consiglieri: Leading from the Shadows turns the spotlight on the seconds-in-command – the advisers, assistants and counsellors (or ‘consiglieri’) – who are too often disparaged as the ‘No. 2’. Far from being also-rans, these crucial vice-presidents, first lieutenants and first violins can influence the fate of countries, companies and individual ventures all over the world. One need look little further than Old Mancs like Howard Davies, former Chairman of the FSA or Harold Lever, Paymaster General or Ivan Gazidis, backroom CEO to Arsenal front man, Arsene Wenger, but Hytner has. In this timely celebration of the done-down deputy, Richard Hytner presents a remarkable array of powerful advisers, from Alastair Campbell and Hillary Clinton to Rasputin, Machiavelli and Peter Mandelson, and talks to outstanding consiglieri in sport, business, politics and the arts, revealing what motivates these so-called No. 2s, what makes them great and what their bosses can do to help them flourish..

The 1980s & 90s Reunion Dinner

A most enjoyable evening was had by all those who attended the 1980s & 90s reunion dinner held at School on Saturday 10 May. Seventy or so OMs, retired and current staff and the High Master attended and everybody contributed to the evening’s relaxed atmosphere.

Ian Leverton Annual Lecture

The evening began with tours of the School and thanks must go to the School officers who guided us all around.

Dinner was held in the Refectory, where we were formally welcomed by Master of Ceremonies, Simon Jones. With stories recounted (why let the truth stand in the way of a good story?) and dinner done with, it was time for the speeches.

This year, we were fortunate enough to be addressed by Professor Martin Durrell (54-61) of Manchester University, the eminent German linguist, himself an Old Mancunian, who spoke on the topic of ‘Learning a Foreign Language: What’s so difficult?’, discussing the complexities of foreign language acquisition. The lecture, chaired by year 13 Germanists, was heard by all current Sixth Form linguists and future language students in year 11, and it was a pleasure to welcome a number of former staff and Old Mancunians, as well as members of Ian’s family, who attended the lecture for the first time this year. Our thanks must go to Professor Durrell for a superb occasion, and we eagerly anticipate next year’s lecture in the School’s 500th year.

OM Gavin McBride (83-90) opened the proceedings with a light-hearted look at his MGS life. Thanks go to Gavin for speaking of his time at School and sharing his memories.

The High Master then spoke briefly and opened the floor to questions from those present. We were brought up to date with developments at School, the challenges that lie ahead and the plans for celebrating 500 years of MGS in the course of 2015.

With the formal part of the evening over, those present managed to fill the refectory with noise and laughter as memories of life at MGS were swapped into the early hours.

From the Archive The History of MGS in 50 Objects MGS has a long and vibrant history which will be celebrated during our 500th anniversary in 2015. The documents and artefacts stored in the School’s Archive offer a record of some of the most exciting and poignant events in the history of MGS. It is for this reason that we have decided, in common with other institutions, to embark upon a ‘50 Objects’ project. 49 objects have been chosen by members of the School community, and there will be an opportunity in September 2015 for those affiliated with MGS to vote from a shortlist of five for the object that will hold the pride of place at Number 50. The objects vary from photographs of significant spaces and places around the School, to actual archival documents relating to specific pupils or staff.

Each week during 2015, the Archives will announce an object on our special blog.

There will be a visual representation of the object which will be accompanied by a short description written by a knowledgeable member of the MGS community. Alongside the online presence of each object, we will be displaying the object in question in the Archives, and producing a poster campaign to promote the ‘Object of the Week’. The Old Mancunian community will receive weekly updates promoting the latest object and a digest of those

which have gone before. Perhaps the most exciting object will be Number 49; which will be a piece of work created by one of our current students to show what MGS means to them.

The competition to create this piece of work will be open to the whole School during 2015, and the winning piece will be kept in the Archives indefinitely.

From the High Master Our Founder The annual service to honour Hugh Oldham, the School’s founder, was held at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 22 June. This event, which, to anyone outside our community would seem quite strange, is one that is always well attended.

Following the Cathedral Eucharist Service, OMs, the School Captain, current and former staff attend a short service in the chapel housing Oldham’s tomb. Prayers are said and flowers laid before the party retire to the Cathedral’s Chapter House.

When I was a boy at MGS I knew very little about Hugh Oldham, beyond the fact that he was the School’s founder.

When, some years later, I happened to be in Exeter, I made the pilgrimage to his tomb, but my knowledge of Oldham’s place in history remained scant. I did not seek to understand why he would have chosen to found a School so far from his Seat, nor how he as a man of the church would have had the means to do so.

My interest in Hugh Oldham was ignited about five years ago, following a service I attended in the Henry VII Chapel at Westminster Abbey. I was amazed to discover that when the foundation stones for the Chapel were laid, there were three key figures present. Henry VII, his mother Lady Margaret Beaufort and Hugh Oldham. This took me by surprise, so I headed off to the Abbey Library to find out more.

It is generally accepted that Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother to Henry VII, played a pivotal role in the foundation of the Tudor Dynasty. She has recently been the subject of a flurry of books and a major BBC drama.

Oldham’s place in the story was as Chancellor to Beaufort’s Estates,

a position that meant he was adviser to the founder of a Royal Dynasty. So, Oldham, the boy from Ancoats, would have wielded a great deal of power, but this would also have made him a man of great wealth.

This part of the story explains how Oldham would have had the means to found a School, but why this enterprise?

To answer this question one has to look to the changing attitude toward education during the Renaissance. The idea that schooling should be available to those outside wealthy households or the closed orders of the monasteries was starting to take hold in the sixteenth century, and MGS was among a group of schools to be founded during this period.

Oldham followed the example of John Colet, another man of the Church, who founded St Paul’s School at around the same time. Education was clearly something that Oldham valued and this is further demonstrated by his gift of the princely sum of £4,000 to his other great project, Corpus Christi, which he co-founded with Richard Fox. Former MGS doctor, Alfred Mumford, wrote a biography of Hugh Oldham which was not a best seller but further study of his role in the Tudor Court and of his philanthropy would be worthwhile. The origins of this School and of education in this country as a whole can only be fully understood if we delve into the history of men like Oldham, Colet and Fox, and this is something that can only be of value when we look to shape the education of the future.

Next year, our 500th anniversary, should be a year when we reflect on our foundation and the hopes and aspirations of our founder. We will once again travel down to Exeter and pay our respects to Hugh Oldham.

His desire to provide educational opportunities for the poor boys of Manchester resulted in the wonderful School that has benefited so many of us, and so it is fitting that Old Mancunians will meet once again to remember Oldham and his work.

Supercar Science Day! Pupils at MGS experienced an exciting science lesson as The Sytner Group, the UK’s leading retailer of specialist motor vehicles, brought more than £3 million worth of luxurious supercars to the School, including names such as McLaren, Maserati, Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

As part of the science day, the boys were also treated to lectures on the history of the motoring industry, as well as the scientific processes that are integral to car manufacturing.

MGS Crowned Lancashire Cup Champions The MGS Under-13 rugby team have been crowned 2014 Lancashire Cup champions after beating Kirkham Grammar School in the final.

The Lower School team overcame their fierce rivals to lift the cup in a stunning 17-13 victory played at Aldwinians Rugby Club in Audenshaw in March.

It’s Destination USA for Arron and Sam

A team of Senior School chess players have won a national chess competition held at Imperial College in London.

Arron Gould and Sam Heath (both Year 13) have secured places at prestigious American universities.

Daniel Abbas (Year 9), Jamie Horton (Year 13), Andrew Horton (Year 11) and Michael Fernandez (Year 10) came away victorious having battled through a series of intense chess rounds. This is in addition to their victory in the Millfield International Tournament.

World’s Greatest Explorer

Arron had to make the tough choice between Boston, Miami, George Washington and Berkeley universities, opting to pursue his interest in political studies at the impressive Berkeley in California. In contrast, Sam has opted to study on the East Coast and has obtained an unconditional offer to study Japanese and Spanish at Ivy League university Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

Freddie Dobbs (Year 6) wrote to the world’s ‘greatest living explorer’, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, for help with his Junior School project on famous explorers.

Sir Ranulph replied with extensive answers to Freddie’s questions, and also provided him with a signed copy of his autobiography.

OM Sections London & South East The Annual London Dinner took place at the Oxford and Cambridge Club in April with Sandip Jobanputra (83-90) filling in for Dan Rosenfield (88-95) as guest speaker.

Sandip, a former ship financier and ship owner who now runs a family office, challenged the OMs present to use their combined human capital to support the School through its quincentenary and beyond. In a break from tradition, a lively Q & A session then took place between the audience and the High Master. Dan Rosenfield, formerly Private Secretary to the Treasury, has committed to speak in 2016.

The annual golf tournament for the Owl Trophy was won

South and West The 48th annual Commemoration Service in pious memory of Hugh Oldham took place in Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 22 June.

The High Master, Dr Martin Boulton, made his first visit to the event and we welcomed School Captain, Peter Woodcock, along with former masters David Jennings (62-96), Alan Pickwick (75-13) and Jeremy Ward (74-97).

At lunch, Dr Boulton and Peter Woodcock spoke about the ethos of MGS, and how the School had influenced their own lives. A question-andanswer session ranged over security and discipline.

After lunch, we elected officers for 2014/15, and agreed proposals to simplify the Section’s organisation, and make membership open without subscription to all OMs in the south and west of England and Wales.

The next Commemoration Service, to be held in Exeter on Sunday 12 July 2015, will be part of the MGS 500 celebration.

Chess Next year is a big anniversary for MGS. It is also the 40th anniversary of the Greater Manchester County Chess Association. Three MGS players (Peter Webster (79-85), David Boyle (83-90), and Paul Garner (84-91)) have captained Greater Manchester, and many others have played in its teams, in its weekend tournaments, and for the clubs affiliated to it.

In 1995, a combined team of MGS players past and present took on a Greater Manchester team over six boards. A fresh challenge has been issued for next year. We hope to organise the match in the first half of the year, at the School.

We would also like to hold a chess dinner at the Oxford and Cambridge Club in London.

Manchester Lodge Old Mancunians with Mount Sinai Since its founding in 1906 until 2006 the Old Mancunians Lodge comprised old boys of the School including members of staff. However over the years and in particular with the growing tendency of many old boys to live and work outside Manchester the membership began to decline. In 2006 the Lodge was given the opportunity to take part in a new initiative within Freemasonry to encourage younger people and in particular those studying at universities to join. Today there are still many members who are Old Mancunians and we now have many young members who have joined whilst at university. We have now created an environment where young and not so young enjoy the fellowship which Freemasonry has to offer.

The Lodge has recently amalgamated with another Manchester Lodge and henceforth will be known as Old Mancunians with Mount Sinai.

Owl drop ins For the last Old Mancunian magazine of 2014 we dunk our digestives and dip into the Rich Tea who were the recently visiting former pupils to the Development Office and the School. It has been a relatively quiet period but we take a crumb of comfort that we will be entertaining many more of you during our quincentennial celebrations.

Professor Martin Durrell (54-61) entertained us in February, saying he was ‘Delighted to be back and honoured to be asked to give the Ian Leverton Lecture’. You can learn about this year’s lecture on the Events Page.

Former School Captain Safdar Sarwar (04-11) was pleased to see so many faces that he recognised and hopeful of returning in 2015. We hope you can bring the rest of your (What is their collective noun? Management team/vice captains?) with you Safdar.

In a flurry of activity in June, Simon Holroyd (78-85) underlined his appreciation when he commented in the Visitors Book ‘Excellent to return. It’s been a long while, but it’s so nice to come back!’. This was echoed by both John Young (68-75) and Tim Martin (00-07) who both commented on how great it was to be back in the school.

Alan Boulton (51-58) expressed his delight at calling in.

Manchester Pub Night Around thirty Old Mancunians, ranging in era from the 1960s to 2013 leavers, along with staff and MHSG ladies enjoyed our latest Manchester Pub Evening at the Albert Square Chop House.

We managed to last more rounds than the England Football Team and the clement Manchester weather allowed all who attended to enjoy the sunshine in Albert Square while chatting.

Further to the article in Edition 33 of TOM, Alan Pickwick (Physics Department Staff, 75-13) writes: When I started teaching at MGS in 1975 I soon noticed the Memorial Book for Old Boys who fell in World War 1. It’s hard to miss in its bronze case, standing on its white marble plinth. I also noticed that there were screws sticking out of the top of the marble on each side of the case. This intrigued me and I eventually came across a photograph showing that originally there were bronze statuettes one each side of the case.

From the photograph they appear to be cherubs with wings, echoing the statue in the Memorial Hall. Further research showed that they were stolen between the late 1960s and 1975. This was the time when boys were allowed to pass through the Entrance Hall. Before that entry was strictly forbidden! Not that I would ever think that a boy …

It was always in my mind to find replacements for the missing bronzes. I did find some brass owls that might have done, but they looked rather dour, wings folded, staring straight ahead.

Then in free time on one of my Astronomy Education trips I spotted two owls with their wings open, so I bought them on the spot. They were probably cast in India, were sold to me in the Plaka Market in Athens and now stand each side of the Memorial Book, where they act to prevent the doors opening too far and damaging the hinges. Very satisfying. (And you would need a JCB to remove them!)

Congratulations We congratulate Mark Chilton (88-95) on his appointment to the coaching staff at Lancashire CCC.

Ian Thorpe writes: We are still interested to know if any OM has any information about the disappearance of the original figures.

Mark, a graduate of Durham University, played for Lancashire from 1997 to 2011, captaining the side from 2005 to 2007. He joined the MGS staff as Director of Cricket in January 2012. His move follows the re-appointment of Lancashire’s Peter Moores as England coach. Mark will coach the 2nd XI, and joins fellow-OM Gary Yates (79-86), who is now assisting newly appointed Red Rose coach Glen Chapple.

School Songs – a postscript

Remembering Louis Sivori

OMs with attendance spanning the three decades from 1928 have written with their memories (or lack of them) of Hugh of the Owl, When August Suns are Shining (‘the holiday song’) and 40 Years On (borrowed from Harrow School).

Ian Callan believes that Dicky Radford may have been the creator of Hugh of the Owl, which was sung in the 30s and as late as 1955 (at Speech Day). Donald Hill remembers it as an ‘awful dirge’ sung rarely in the early 40s (but memorably so for Michael Goodman, who quotes three verses from it).

In the 40s Radford is remembered enthusiastically leading the singing of 40 Years On, which later became the anthem of the London Section of the OMA. All three songs were included in MGS’ songbook (British Songs for British Boys). As late as the mid 1950s singing with Dicky Radford was the sum total of music education provided.

Can anyone remember the time before Sivoris provided ice-cream to the boys (and staff) of MGS? I remember queuing at lunchtime in the 1960s at the back of school by the entrance to Birchfields Park, and can still taste the raspberry sauce. In the 1980s the family was asked to bring their van on-site and younger OMs will remember it parked by the cricket pavilion. So it is with great sadness that we have to report the death in June of Louis Sivori, a regular on the van over all those years, and a generous benefactor of the school. Fittingly, the High Master, members of staff and pupils attended his funeral. His nephew Robert, himself an OM, is now a hospital doctor.
