From the Director of Development The Gatley run made its long awaited return to the sporting calendar before the Old Boys’ Dinner. Old Mancunians, staff and pupils raced over a new course with OM Fraser Macdonald Oulds (02-09) coming home first down the Drive. Cheered on by members of Scout Troop 1, who were enjoying their own mini reunion, Ger Morris led a strong staff team. It was fitting that Paddy Montague (50-57), who won the race in 1957 when the event took place in Gatley, was there to enjoy the spectacle. Paddy has even threatened a comeback for the 2022 race which will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 19 November before the Old Boys’ Dinner.

In January we welcomed Sitara Bartle, our new Communications and Marketing Manager, to the Development Office team.

Work experience is vital for our young Owls as they look to their future beyond MGS – please contact Lauren via oldboys@ mgs.org if you can help with our careers and work experience programme.

We are hoping that our events programme will return to a new normal during 2022. The Reunion Dinner will take place on Saturday 7 May. On this occasion, considering recent postponed events, we are inviting OMs who left the School before 1969, as well as younger OMs who left in the following years: 1980-82; 1990-92; 2000-2002; 2010-2012. I look forward to seeing many of you later in the year.

Old Boys’ Dinner 2021 and Alumni Awards The 216th Old Boys’ Dinner and Alumni Awards were held in the Memorial Hall in November.

The Senior Steward was Mr Martin Frost CBE (74-81), founder of CMR Surgical and a pioneer of using technological solutions in business, and Mr Daniel Rosenthal (90-97), founder of Interlink Recruitment was the Junior Steward.

Alumni Awards were presented to three very worthy recipients: Dr Vishal Aggarwal (91-93) for Services to Dentistry; Dr Philip Torr (77-83) for Services to Science and Professor Alan Garner (46-53) was presented with a Lifetime Achievement for Services to the Arts.

Professor Garner recorded an acceptance video and was delighted to receive the award, telling OMs that it bookended his career nicely, as while at MGS, he received an award for being the ‘Most Academically Relaxed’ pupil!

Alumni Award Nominations 2022 Honourees should represent a variety of fields and lifetime accomplishments; these awards should demonstrate that alumni in a wide variety of backgrounds, all with roots at MGS, excel in their chosen fields.

Junior Alumni Award This award recognises outstanding achievements of alumni under the age of 35.

Senior Alumni Award This award recognises outstanding achievements of alumni in industry, research, education, sport, the arts, volunteering, and philanthropy and service to the community, School, or the public at large.

Student Trading competition Sixth Form students studying business and economics had the opportunity to take part in an industry specific simulation experience, trading on the stock market.

As a result of a volatile period of time between Christmas and January 2022, student traders all finished within 2-3 percent of one another. There was one team whose trade with ShoeZone led them to victory so, congratulations go to team HSBC! The winners comprised Harish Kapoor, Enyioma Anosike, Ed Levison and Isaac Harris. OM Marc Duschenes (88-93) who ran the competition said: ‘The results in the sector speak for themselves, as do the students’ portfolio trades. All teams performed within a very tight and acceptable band – suffice to say no trader would have lost their job in such volatile circumstances.’

64 Sixth Formers took part in the competition which has provided students with valuable hands-on work experience for those interested in finance and business. With external work experience difficult to obtain due to Covid-19, these experiences are crucial for students, and the school is very grateful to Marc for his time and commitment.

The winning team and other highly commended students look forward to a trip to London for a City Finance walking tour in June.

Careers and University Support The last two years have proved particularly difficult for our 6th form pupils to gain work experience and to visit university open days.

We are enormously grateful to all Old Mancunians who made themselves available virtually via MGS Global Connect to provide advice and mentorship in this regard.

In recent weeks we have been able to welcome Robert Povey (05-12) to talk to pupils about his time at Goldman Sachs and barrister David Boyle (83-90). David delivered a talk to the Law Society discussing how to be wise in 25 minutes!

The inspiring talk was entitled ‘Quam Sapere?’ exploring the ways in which we can utilise wisdom and knowledge.

We are hopeful that our programme of careers events, including careers evenings and annual careers fair, will resume as normal from the summer.

100 Years of the Owl’s Nest One thing that all Old Mancunians have in common is a trip to the Owl’s Nest.

2021 was the 100th anniversary of the Nest and we are enormously grateful to Roger May (62-68) who commissioned his wood crafting daughter, Sandra to produce a new sign.

Bursary Telethon 2022 We have a growing number of Old Mancunians, of all ages, who support our bursary fundraising by making a monthly gift to the School.

In response to Old Mancunians who enjoyed this method of fundraising from their universities, we have held a bursary telethon since 2016, which has resulted in hundreds of new donors to the School.

Young OMs will be calling again in July as we look to keep up the momentum. We are grateful that OM Paul Ormerod (61-68) will be covering the costs associated with the telethon, to ensure that any new donations benefit bursary recipients directly. Significant thanks must also go to OM Richard Donner (72-79) who has agreed to incentivise new donors with an element of matched giving.

2021 saw the 100th anniversary of the Owl’s Nest

The Owls’ Nest at Disley was given to the School by High Master J.L. Paton who purchased the land and arranged for a hut that had been an officers’ mess in WWI to be relocated to the site.

The camp, at Lane Ends, Disley, was established to give opportunities to Grammar School boys to enjoy and appreciate an outdoor life; to pursue their hobbies; to grow stronger and healthier; and to observe the processes of nature.

From the High Master Farewell, Harry ...

It was a shock for the whole school community when we heard the news that Harry Bardsley, our former Head Porter who was adored by everyone at MGS, had passed away last November. Harry joined MGS in 1982 originally as the Pool Porter, with responsibility for the pool and the gym area and would always be one of the first on site. Over the years, he was promoted to Head Porter and lived in the School’s lodge with his wife Aggie, and later, their son James.

In the last years of his career, Harry was the king of the security barrier and parking. Even after his retirement a few years ago, everyone continued to fondly refer to ‘Harry’s Hut’, a permanent reminder of Harry’s enduring legacy at MGS. In so many ways, Harry was the public face of MGS. He would always be the first person that boys, staff, Old Mancunians and visitors would see in the morning, and he would greet everyone with kindness, warmth, a quick chat and a smile. Harry was the hub of informal pastoral care within the School. Whether it was boys or staff, Harry always had time to lend a friendly listening ear to anyone in need.

Harry was such an integral part of life here at MGS, and everyone who knew him will have their own, individual, fond memories of this wonderful man.

We are sure everyone would agree that Harry was a true gentleman, popular and adored by boys and staff alike, and was undoubtedly part of the pantheon of MGS greats. We are very lucky to have had characters such as Harry and former Head Porter Wilf Robb, who are now a part of MGS folklore.

Harry loved his time here at MGS, and loved the banter with the boys.

During the whole School official photographs, boys in all years would fondly chant: “Harry! Harry! Harry!” as he took his seat front and centre. And, in keeping with Harry’s generosity, he was also a patron of our Bursary Appeal and wore his Old Mancunian tie with pride, every day.

The non-teaching staff play an often unseen role in the life of the School, and yet they make an immense contribution to the smooth running and success of MGS. From Science technicians to the Grounds staff, Catering department and Medical team, as well as the staff working in the Secretarial, Financial, Communications and Development teams, we are fortunate to be surrounded by such dedicated professionals. It is perhaps unsurprising that the non-teaching staff received over 50% of the vote from Old Mancunians which resulted in them being featured in the 50th and final chapter of the “The school in 50 objects” series as part of our 500th year celebrations.

From the Archive Community Action MGS has always existed to serve the community in which it was founded. The original foundation deeds stipulated that the School’s purpose was to educate the boys of Manchester. Since the late nineteenth century, the School has widened its focus and sought to serve the wider community too.

The School began with the Hugh Oldham Lads Club which was founded in 1888 and continued until 1959. In 1961, Brian Phythian was asked to create the Service Group, which was later renamed ‘Community Action’, as an outlet for pupils to engage in voluntary service beyond MGS. Community Action still thrives at the School. Recent initiatives have included: volunteering at Covid-19 vaccination centres, picking litter in Birchfields Park and a food bank project. Despite Covid, Christmas 2022 saw the group resume their annual Christmas present appeal and drop off in Salford, delivering over 350 presents alongside OM Reverend Canon David Wyatt (47-54).

Reverend Canon David Wyatt and his wife Helen have both been made MBEs in the New Year’s Honours List in recognition of their service to homeless people and the community in Salford. ‘Canon David Wyatt, what an inspirational figure!

I will never forget the morning I turned up with a group of Sixth formers to carry out work in his parish to discover that he had been giving asylum to some villains overnight because the local police said it was not safe to keep them in their cells. That evening the Wyatt’s house had been fired upon and we found the police combing the area for shell-cases. The terrified victims had hidden beneath a table in David’s study and were just too ready to give themselves up. The boys were suitably impressed.

The kindness and selflessness displayed by David and Helen Wyatt are legendary and Salford will be the poorer once they decide finally to retire.

The highlight of my time at MGS was visiting Canon David Wyatt and his wife and working in their parish.

No matter what mood you were in you always came away feeling better for visiting them. They have the

capacity to make you feel wanted and indispensable.

The Salford Project all started from a meeting we had one lunchtime in S7.

About three boys turned up, I coerced another four or so and a few more drifted in. The speaker was an OM, Nick Bent, who had been working with a vicar in an inner-city parish in Salford.

The vicar in question was Canon David Wyatt.

The reception Nick received was amazing. ‘You have to assist,’ was the response the Sixth Formers made to me and so started the most amazing relationship we have had which has now been ongoing for 30 years.

David is still there as Rector and so is his wife, Helen but at 80 they are not running around as fast as they used to!’

Junior School Gymnast Year 6 student Rayyan Ahmed is currently performing at an elite level within gymnastics and has recently been crowned U12 national team champion. Rayyan started gymnastics in year 2 and soon after joined the competitive squad of the Manchester South Gymnastics club.

In 2019, he entered the under 8s North West Open competition and came second overall. When competitions restarted last year, he qualified for the North West Elite squad. In November, Rayyan won team gold and has now started weekly training sessions with a GB coach, spending around 20 hours a week, an impressive commitment alongside his academic studies.

The Wainwright Digital Poster Prize Senior Award Year 13 pupil Anton Ross has been awarded the Wainwright Digital Poster Prize Senior Award run by the University of Oxford.

Egyptologist Gerald Avery Wainwright, B.Litt. was educated 1889-1896 at Clifton College, Bristol University and Oxford (St Catherine’s Society, later St Catherine’s College), joined the staff of the Egyptian Antiquities Service and became the namesake for the award. Anton said: ‘I researched the Hezekiah tunnels, which were built beneath Jerusalem’s City of David.

I was delighted to learn that I had won the £250 prize, and with an offer from Oxford to read Archaeology and Anthropology next year, I plan to develop my research skills even more.’

UKMT success Having taken part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, several MGS pupils were among just 1,000 pupils nationally who qualified for the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad.

They all achieved excellent results, and in particular Diseye Dasimaka and Nathaniel Loh gained distinctions – an impressive performance considering that those boys are in years 10 and 11 respectively, and this is a national competition open to all pupils up to year 13. In addition, Nathaniel has qualified for the second round of the Olympiad – an accolade usually only achieved by about 250 pupils – this is a truly remarkable result.

MACFEST (Muslim Arts and Culture Festival) Year 13 pupil Fuaad Jafree represented the School in this Year’s MACFEST (Muslim Arts and Culture Festival).

He contributed to the online ‘Young, British and Muslim’ panel discussion on climate change, talking about the impact on their future lives and talking about possible solutions. This was a great opportunity for an MGS student to engage with people of all ages and denominations, including school, college and university students and many local communities.

Fundraising through fitness Year 12 student George Kenrick ran 100km over a month, whilst raising money for the Samaritans, a suicide prevention charity.

He has raised over £200 for the cause, which was especially poignant as he recently lost a friend to suicide. Speaking about the inspiration behind his running initiative, George said: ‘I never want anyone to experience that loss, never mind come to that fateful conclusion themselves, so I decided to raise money for the cause which actively prevents it’.

Where are they now?

Keith Neal (76-99) Family, church, Africa, solar lights and litter-picking summarise some significant life experiences since retirement ...

Ruth and I have welcomed four delightful grandsons, one consequence being that the rented accommodation for our annual joint family holiday in North Wales has had to be expanded!

In contrast, we downsized in 2014, moving just 400 metres from the home we had enjoyed in Hale for 38 years! In 2015, I became Warden of St Peter’s Church but later that year I was diagnosed with a heart problem and taken immediately to Wythenshawe Hospital, where some stents were successfully inserted. After four months, I was able to resume church duties.

In 2002 Ruth and I visited Sierra Leone, just 10 months after the end of a brutal 10-year civil war.

We were invited by Emma, an educationist who had studied for a higher degree

in the UK. For me, this was the first of 15 visits to the country in support of Emma’s work with preschool children and as part of an international team in delivering a training course for members of the police, armed forces and civil society. The Sierra Leone Deputy InspectorGeneral of Police had asked for a course that had been used successfully in Eastern Europe, to help his country return to peace and democracy.

I was alerted to BBC Radio 4’s New Year Appeal (2013) in support of the charity SolarAid. In less than three minutes the Booker Prize-winner, Ian McEwan, convinced me that many people living in poor rural communities would be able to afford the small portable light being promoted by the charity. I emailed Joseph, a friend in Nairobi, Kenya, who was wrestling with the problem of how to help bright children who were unable to do their homework at night due to lack of electricity. Since then, he has built up a network of social activists who have sold thousands of portable solar lights and given countless

children opportunities to break out of poverty.

During the Ebola emergency I raised some funds to purchase 100 solar lights which were flown from China to Sierra Leone and distributed to medical personnel. They were used by burial teams and in maternity clinics. Working through the Manchesterbased charity Syria Relief, I managed to get several hundred lights delivered to internally displaced families living in Syria.

In 2014 I helped to form a church-based group to clear litter from public spaces in Hale. Up until the pandemic we carried out 50 tidy-ups with volunteers from the local community. Following lockdown, I continued our ‘care for creation’ along a three-mile circuit of semirural lanes between Hale and the City of Manchester.

I’ve walked over 1,700 miles and filled 900 bin bags with an estimated 4.5 tonnes of litter! One day a car stopped, the driver got out and said, ‘Mr Neal? You taught me biology 40 years ago!’

I was delighted to learn that this former pupil is now a consultant surgeon.

OM Communications An Unusual Bequest For more than 60 years, OM J Malcolm Allan (46-53) built up an amazing collection of 6,430 different owl pieces, ranging from wooden-carved owls to silver-plated owls to owl-shaped soap.

Malcolm spent his entire working life as a librarian. He started at the Scottish School of Librarianship in 1957, and later worked at libraries in Glasgow, Wigan, Toronto and New York, before retiring in September 2000.

Sadly, Malcolm died in October 2020 aged 85, and bequeathed his entire owl collection to the School. The delivery was delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions, but finally arrived at MGS in a furniture van in April. His collection was sold at auction for the benefit of the Bursary Fund.

Malcolm also kept incredibly detailed and beautifully presented records of every single owl piece he ever collected across ten notebooks. Every time he added a piece to his collection, he would create an ink-drawing of the piece in one of these notebooks, along with a description. The notebooks will be retained in the MGS Archive.

Cambridge Greek Play 2022 After revisiting past glories at the Greek Play in 2019, Gordon Davies (83-90) is planning to attend the 2022 Cambridge Greek Play, a double bill of ‘The Persians’ and ‘Cyclops’.

Lady Barn House School has recently launched its brand new alumni portal, Friends of Lady Barn.

The site is dedicated to all those who have supported the school over the years, including former pupils and parents. It is a great way to reminisce and reconnect with friends as well as discover photos from our archives and the latest news stories from alumni. You can also keep up to date with events and upcoming reunions. The 150th Anniversary Ball is taking place in May 2023 and it would be wonderful to see as many there as possible.
