The response to the Bursary Now Appeal, which launched officially in November 2020, has already raised more than £1 million, thanks to the generous support of Old Mancunians. The Bursary Telethon held in December raised over £300,000 with a significant amount coming from first time donors.

With the markets recovering some of their losses too, our bursary funds are now in a much better situation than we first feared.

The Old Mancunian community has provided tremendous support for our online teaching in recent months. Highlights include our 6th form historians welcoming Michael Wood (59-66) to talk about why Æthelstan was the greatest king of the English of the Middle Ages and British Ambassador to Austria Leigh Turner (70-76), streaming live from Vienna to give an insight to our boys about careers in international relations.

Thank you to all of you who have given your time and energy to enhance the teaching and learning for our boys, and to inform them about university and career choices via MGS Global Connect.

Looking forward, we are beginning to sketch out a transition to normality. Details have been released for the upcoming OM Chess Tournament which will take place online. We are also hopeful that many OMs will return to the School in the near future to run the first Gatley in more than a decade. It is clear that current staff and Old Mancunians have been using the lockdowns to dust off the running shoes – Strava never lies!

The DfE allowed the School to stage our entrance examinations in January by hosting small groups of boys over a series of days. It is heartening that a further 32 boys who will join MGS next September will benefit from a means-tested bursary place.

Sadly, we will disappoint a further 40 boys, who have displayed MGS potential in our examinations, for whom we have insufficient bursary funds. The Bursary Now Appeal will continue ...

Mentorship & Careers With the help of the OM community, we have launched our Sixth Form mentorship programme on MGS Global Connect!

This links students who are currently missing out on university open days and the usual programme of careers events with university and careers advice from young OMs. We have had some fantastic feedback from students gaining work experience placements over the summer and gaining helpful advice that was useful in making university decisions.

We are grateful to the OMs who have been mentors and offered advice to current Sixth Formers. If you would like to volunteer to help, please email Caitlin Gaslawski c.l.gaslawski@mgs.org We have run some virtual careers events in school with Old Mancunians streaming live from around the world, including Kunal Khatri (95-02) in the US. News from the Archive

From the Archive

Despite the disruption of the pandemic, work continues in the MGS Archive and we have some exciting developments to share. This Spring we hope to launch ‘MGS Life’, a website which will allow us to share digitised material from the archives with OMs and the wider community.

The website will give OMs the opportunity to upload digital images and documents and the hope is that we can create a comprehensive online repository of all things MGS. ‘MGS Life’ will allow for searching by theme or by date.

‘On a Wing and a Prayer: MGS and the RAF’ In the March 2020 edition of The Old Mancunian, I requested information about the experiences of OMs who had served in the RAF. I received an excellent response which with other research has enabled me to use lockdown to write ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’.

It charts the story of the massive MGS connection to the RAF especially during WWII. Well over 1,000 OMs have served in the RAF and many have remarkable stories to tell.

The book details some of these stories (see excerpt below right). Many photographs, some published for the first time, accompany the text and Appendices list all the OMs who we know to have served in the RAF. During the years 1941-45 MGS had its own ATC, one of the largest in the country, so as we commemorate the 80th anniversaries of WWII events, it is appropriate to remember a major MGS contribution to the greatest crisis to face the UK in modern times.

To whet your appetite, here is an excerpt from ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’ ...

Probably the highest ranking OM airman who served in WW2 was Group Captain Leonard “Slosher” Slee DSO, DFC and bar (Sale HS, MGS 1924-26).

A boy from Lymm, he left MGS from the relatively undistinguished pastures of Modern 4d to undertake a three year course in Electrical Engineering at Salford Technical College.

He joined the RAF on a short service commission in 1931 but as war loomed he stayed on, reaching the rank of Squadron Leader in 1939. By 1941 he was a Wing Commander but there is some mystery surrounding his work - there is some likelihood that he was involved with an aspect of military intelligence.

However in May 1942 he

was given command of the elite 49 Bomber Squadron at Scampton (Lincs) with which he flew 26 missions. He was then selected to lead one of the most daring raids of the entire war. The Schneider Works at Le Creusot, 300 miles inland from the French coast south of Paris was turning out vast supplies of tanks, armoured vehicles, locomotives and guns for the Germans, but was a small site and therefore difficult to bomb accurately, especially at night. A bold plan was hatched to attack by day to ensure accurate bombing.

“Operation Robinson” would involve nine Squadrons of the newly introduced 4 engine Lancaster bombers, totalling 94 aircraft. Leonard Slee was appointed to command and lead the raid

and one of his squadron commanders was Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC (of Dambusters fame) who described “Robinson” in his book Enemy Coast Ahead as one of the greatest daylight raids ever undertaken. On 17 October 1942 weather conditions were good and once over France the force led by Slee’s Lancaster flew at tree top level to avoid enemy radar detection. Two planes suffered bird damage as a result! Of the ninety four Lancasters, ninety three returned safely, the sole casualty being a bomber that crashed into a building at the target site. The bombing was not as accurate as hoped but the Schneider works was put out of action for a time and did not return to full production for over a year.

They have launched a website, ‘Hidden Treasures’, that aims to showcase archives that tell the story of British Jews and their experiences – https://celebratingjewisharchives.org The MGS Archive holds a small collection of relevant material which we have shared with ‘Hidden Treasures’.

Slee and his Australian navigator F/O A Grant were both awarded the DSO and given the following citation: “Much depended on their efforts but each in his respective role displayed superb skill and determination and a large measure of the outstanding success achieved can be attributed to their sterling work. By his great powers of leadership Wing Commander Slee won the complete confidence of all the crews of the attacking force.”

Prior to the pandemic, we were able to conduct a number of oral history interviews with OMs who were at MGS during the 1930s and 40s, and these recordings will start to be made available online this year. We would be delighted to be contacted by OMs who would be interested in sharing their MGS experiences in this way. Jewish OMs would be particularly welcome, in order for us to add to the Hidden Treasures project. However, we would be pleased to interview a variety of OMs, focusing on different time periods and experiences. Alternatively, written reminiscences are always welcome. Following the announcement that, for the second year running, public examinations will be cancelled there has been much published in the press about grade inflation and the anxiety that pupils have that this year’s results will be viewed with suspicion.

Public examinations have been the bedrock of our education system for as long as anyone can remember, imperfect in many ways, but in the absence of anything suitable to replace them, they continue to be the goal every pupil works towards. There have been calls for alternative systems of continuous assessment and coursework to replace exams, as a whole or in part, at various times; but having confidence that the form of assessment used will be applied consistently has ensured that O-levels, GCSEs, A-levels and their like have stood the test of time.

The pandemic has changed all of that; we have just received our first bit of guidance on how grades are to be awarded this year and, after the debacle of last year’s award, everything has changed once again. Last year we were asked to rank pupils for each subject and then grades were calculated based on a school’s previous performance, the so-called algorithm. The backlash from pupils across the country forced a U-turn on results day and a last minute move to teacher assessed grades, which were asked for alongside the rankings.

Not wanting a second bloody nose, a number of promises were made to pupils this year by the Education Secretary. The exam boards have had to attempt to put together a system that is fair, does not overly inflate this year’s grades whilst honouring these promises, not a task I envy. On top of this pupils across the country have had a disrupted education and this will almost certainly have had the biggest effect on the most disadvantaged in society.

We are told that this year the grading will require pupils to have reached the same standard they would have done in previous years. Boys at MGS are lucky in that their online learning has been one of the best nationally; every single lesson has been taught online from the first day of the first lockdown. By the time the second lockdown came along they had all been issued a top spec computer, by the school, to ensure that the online offering could be as effective as possible. But can we genuinely expect the disruption to their education not to have had an effect?

I feel greatly for this generation.

They have missed out on a classroom experience we have all come to realise is the most important part of an education, they have been passengers in a process that will determine their future options, and the playing field has been far from level. On top of this they worry that the results they are awarded will be viewed with suspicion.

It is my view that quite the reverse should be the case. This generation of pupils has shown remarkable resilience, perseverance and adaptability, surely the qualities that any employer would look for in their workforce and the grades they receive should reflect this and their potential which I believe will be the one thing that will have been unchanged by this whole horrible experience.

How strange that it should be going on sixteen years since we left MGS (the ‘we’ because all four of us did time there), having been in Greater Manchester for a total of twentyeight years, longer than we have lived anywhere in our lives.

I retired in 2005, aged 63, and, probably nostalgic for the Zimbabwean flatlands where Heather and I grew up, we headed for the wide horizons and blue welkin of East Anglia. We settled, inevitably, in the ancient market town where I had studied and Heather had once worked, with its quaint old university and pretty buildings thronged with memories.

And when we unpacked our bags we found that MGS, like the boggart in William Mayne’s Earthfasts, had slipped in unnoticed and come along for the ride.

Cambridge was where our younger son Antony (85-92) lived with his historian wife; it also gave easy access to the bright lights of the Big Smoke and thus to our other son Steven (80-87). Both boys had read engineering here before completing PhDs from Edinburgh, and then, as so often happens to their kind, ended up in somewhat unrelated occupations, Steven doing risk assessment analysis for a London-based bank and Antony as the CEO of a start-up medical diagnostics company. Since then, two gangling Cambridge grandsons have appeared, now 14 and 17 respectively and happily ensconced in The Perse, another great institution following the MGS ethos – strive for excellence and deliver the totally unreasonable.

Along with the luggage came some rather less agreeable MGS habits: a tendency to rise and process solemnly out of the room after the first few

bars of any piece of uplifting music; to glance at one’s watch during any conversation lasting more than two minutes; and to dash off down corridors at the sound of any loud ringing: for health and safety reasons we now keep our phones on the lowest volume setting.

In my last years at the School I began teaching myself Hungarian.

One day the father of Béla Szabó in 3M thrust a battered novel into my hand and ordered me to read it. It was clearly a European masterpiece, as yet untranslated, so I set out to translate it. The book found favour, and since then a further eleven titles have appeared, with another in the pipeline; I have also worked on scripts for Hungarian film directors. It keeps me out of trouble, and makes me feel enormously privileged.

Hungarian is a strange and wonderful tongue. Its vocabulary is unlike anything found in the familiar Western languages. There are rules for vowel harmony but no future tense, a single past tense, and almost no use of the plural or the verb ‘to be’. Verbs and nouns are case-ended, like Latin, and the syntax works backwards. In its cryptic and baffling elegance, it has much in common with the MGS school timetable (Summer exam supplement) in the era of the seven-day cycle. As such, it makes a fitting coda to those twenty-eight exhilarating and unforgettable years that, for better or for worse, are clearly with me still.
