The Olana Partnership - 2024 Annual Report

Page 1

FROM THE PRESIDENT

I’m very pleased to present The Olana Partnership’s Annual Report for 2024. With the many projects and programs that we undertook, there is no doubt that the year’s most significant accomplishment was the opening of the Frederic Church Center for Art & Landscape. Not only is this new visitor orientation facility the pivotal element of our vision for centering the visitor experience on Olana’s historic landscape, it is also the first new structure at Olana since Frederic Church’s lifetime. As such, we felt it was critical to get it right, and the public (and private) response has been glowingly positive.

Our team reports that follow provide much detail about the successes and some challenges of 2024. In reading them, please keep in mind two things: first, that these necessarily brief texts only provide the highlights of the wide array of work underway at Olana and, second and very importantly, that The Olana Partnership’s staff is our greatest resource. I want to express my admiration and appreciation for their professionalism and commitment to Olana, our visitors, members, donors, and the communities we work within that they demonstrate every day.

I am particularly excited to share our success in engaging more visitors in our public tours and our educational programs. A key element of this in 2024 was the introduction of Third Thursdays / Tercer Jueves, a monthly day of free access and special programming made possible with a major grant from the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program. A focus of this program has been outreach to Spanish-speaking communities across our region, an initiative that I think would please Frederic Church, who cherished his extensive and lifelong travels through the Americas.

2024 saw important progress on two major, future-focused projects: the planning of The Olana Partnership’s Frederic Church 200, an international celebration of the bicentennial of Church’s birth in 2026; and the launch of the first phase of creating a public, online catalogue of Olana’s collections. This last is made possible with a major, multi-year grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, and we thank them for understanding of the national significance of Olana’s collections.

While we said farewell to several brilliant staff members in 2024, one deserves a particular note of appreciation. After 26 years, Ida Brier, The Olana Partnership’s Archivist-Librarian, retired. Beginning as a volunteer in Olana’s Mingled Garden, Ida aided countless researchers and curators and enlightened several generations of our staff on the rich resource of Olana’s archives. We wish her much happy reading and gardening in her retirement.

Sincerely yours,

ABOUT THE OLANA PARTNERSHIP

The Olana Partnership (TOP) is an educational nonprofit organization that is the collaborate partner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) at Olana State Historic Site. Our mission is to inspire the public by preserving and interpreting Frederic Church’s Olana.

TOP’s predecessor, Olana Preservation, Inc., was formed in 1964 to save Olana from sale and destruction and in 1966 purchased the house, its contents and land and conferred them to New York State. TOP itself was organized as a 501(c)3 organization under the name Friends of Olana in 1971. We adopted our current name in 2000 to express the central importance of partnership in the preservation and interpretation of Olana, especially with OPRHP.

Over the past 25 years, TOP has collaborated with OPRHP to preserve and restore Olana’s historic architecture and landscape. While much has been accomplished, this is an ongoing and continuous process. In 2015, we partnered in the development of Olana’s Strategic Landscape Design Plan. This provides a road map to completing the restoration of all 250-acres of the designed landscape and surviving historic structures,

including Olana’s farm complex. The linchpin of this plan is the Frederic Church Center for Art & Landscape, which opened in October 2024.

Throughout this time, TOP has led efforts to protect Olana’s integral viewshed, and our work is a national model for such endeavors. Olana and TOP played crucial roles in preventing the construction of a nuclear power plant at Cementon in the 1970s and the St. Lawrence Cement Plant in Greenport in the 1990s. Alongside these high profile cases, TOP has partnered with OPRHP, Scenic Hudson, Open Space Institute, and private landowners to place over 3,000 acres within view of Olana under conservation easements.

TOP is extremely proud of our record of achievement and of the exceptional educational and cultural experiences TOP provides for the tens of thousands who visit and engage each year. Through guided tours of the house and landscape, special exhibitions, educational offerings and other public programs, TOP provides unparalleled opportunities to engage the imagination; encourage creativity; and explore art, architecture and the environment.

OUR MISSION

The Olana Partnership is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire the public by preserving and interpreting Frederic Church’s OLANA, a New York State Historic Site and a National Historic Landmark within the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.

VISITOR OPERATIONS & ENGAGEMENT

The Olana Partnership’s Visitor Services team is the frontline for engaging all of Olana’s visitors, whether coming to enjoy the landscape as a public park or purchasing tickets to one of our public tours. The Visitor Services team operates ticketing out of the Frederic Church Center, acts as greeters and way finders, and serves as interpretive guides for a wide range of year-round tour offerings, both in the landscape and in the historic house.

In 2024, The Olana Partnership’s Visitor Services team welcomed over 34,000 guests on public tours, a 4% increase over 2023. We engaged approximately 25% of Park visitors at Olana in a ticketed tour, up from 20% in 2023.

We continue to expand free and discounted tour access through Library Passes, SNAP/EBT, and Members and other discounts, resulting in $55,000 in adult public ticket savings. Notably, our Library Pass program continued to grow, and use on house tours was up 35% over the previous year, representing over $26,000 in visitor savings. The two-hour combination tour (which includes a one-hour landscape tour

and main floor house tour) continued to be a visitor favorite, supporting our commitment to whole-site interpretation and creating an upward trajectory of landscape engagement.

One of several significant milestones in 2024 was the launch of TOP’s free Third Thursday / Tercer Jueves initiative, funded by the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program. Through this initiative, TOP is able to offer a full day of free public tours and innovative public programs once a month. A key component of the program is Spanish-language access, including dedicated Spanish-language tours every Third Thursday / Tercer Jueves

The highlight of the year was the opening of the Frederic Church Center for Art & Landscape. Governor Kathy Hochul opened the building to the public on October 25, and the visitor response has been overwhelmingly positive. First-time guests and long-time visitors alike are thrilled to experience the building and discuss its siting, concept, and sustainability story with staff. Guests are grateful to have Lake Road re-opened for the first time in two years, allowing access to the key view of the house across the lake, as well as access to the farm complex

WHAT VISITORS ARE SAYING

My e-car guide was THE BEST!!! She knew her history and answered all questionsher enthusiasm and love for her job and the site was wonderful!

June 2024 Visitor from Fredericksburg, TX

Our visit was beyond delightful, made more so by the wonderful staff and guides. Everyone was so enthusiastic, friendly, and warm. I cannot stress enough how all the staff made us feel so amazingly welcome.

June 2024 Visitor from Bronxville, NY

OMG this experience was beyond my hopes and expectations. I can’t wait to get back.We are considering moving to NY to be a part of Olana’s future state. This historic treasure has a heart and a soul we must preserve forever.

July 2024 Visitor from Rocky Mount, VA

via Lake Road. Visitors are encouraged through wayfinding signage to make the new facility their first stop upon arrival, and ticketing operations are fully functional both there and the Olana Shop at the top of the hill. We look forward to our first full year in the building, during which time TOP will gather data and information about how visitors are engaging with the space overall.

The Olana Shop, operated by The Olana Partnership, offers a curated range of gifts and items connected to the site’s art, architecture, and local landscape. Custom merchandise, branded apparel, books, home goods, children’s items, and more are available to visitors at a variety of price points, and many items are locally made or connected to Hudson Valley artisans. The Olana Shop also offers hot and cold beverages, and a selection of food choices through Taste NY, highlighting the quality and diversity of food and beverages grown, produced, or processed in New York State.

EDUCATION & PUBLIC PROGRAMS

The Olana Partnership’s Education and Public Programming staff develop and implement diverse programming for all audiences. Rooted in placebased education principals, core elements of our educational programs include: K-12 onsite, curriculum-based field trips; accessible family programs designed for intergenerational audiences; our Workforce Development Internship program with Columbia-Greene Community College; Panorama Art + Nature Summer Youth Program; virtual webinars with scholars and artists, and workshops for lifelong learners.

In 2024, The Olana Partnership expanded the reach of our onsite programming by 28% and virtual programming by 54%. A key factor in the growth of onsite attendance was the launch of Third Thursdays/Tercer Jueves, a monthly community day

offering free tours and programs to all audiences. Supported by a major, three-year grant from the Access for All program of the Art Bridges Foundation, this initiative provided more regular free programming for audiences through workshops, drop-in artmaking experiences, lectures, concerts, and performances.

In addition, TOP provided a robust selection of other interdisciplinary offerings, providing over 200 programs throughout the year. This includes an increase in onsite family programs and an uptick in K-12 field trips serving students in our regional communities and beyond.

This increase in the number of regular onsite programs posed a challenge for Education’s two-person team in 2024, as the increased demand of more frequent programming took up the bulk of the staff’s capacity and programming time. As such, offsite program

attendance decreased by 13% from 2023. To meet this challenge and continue prioritizing outreach through offsite initiatives and partnerships, at the end of 2024 a third staff position was developed. This role is designed to support onsite program teaching and coordination while increasing the capacity for regular offsite programs and The Olana Partnership’s ability to serve a wide range of audiences both onsite and in the community.

LANDSCAPE, VIEWSHED, & CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT

The Olana Partnership works in close partnership with the Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation to restore and preserve Olana’s 250acre designed landscape and its integral viewshed. This includes routine maintenance and capital development plans across the site. Since 2015, this work has been guided by Olana’s Strategic Landscape Design Plan, a comprehensive planning document whose development was led by Nelson Bryd Woltz Landscape Architects. The Olana Partnership plays a particularly critical role in protecting Olana’s viewshed, since as a private non-profit organization representing Olana as a National Historic Landmark, we are able to advocate in ways that are impossible for a state agency.

On October 25, 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul officially opened the Frederic Church Center for Art & Landscape. This carbon neutral, net zero allelectric building and its integral climate resilient landscape create a new public threshold for Frederic Church’s historic landscape and are the linchpin of Olana’s Strategic Landscape Design Plan. Initial reaction to the Frederic Church Center has been overwhelmingly positive, and the last quarter of 2024 saw The Olana Partnership’s staff begin to observe how visitors would interact with the new space.

The rehabilitation of the section of Lake Road extending from the Frederic Church Center to the

historic farm complex was included in the project. This historic carriage road now provides a seamless connection for visitors across the southern portion of Olana and includes reopened views to the main house, as designed by Church.

2024 saw construction begin on NYS Parks’ new maintenance facility at the foot of Olana, across Route 9G. This, combined with the recent expansion of Parks staff (shared between Olana and Clermont State Historic Site), will help to ensure adequate support for Olana as a designed historic landscape and public park. The Mingled Garden thrived in 2024, and The Olana Partnership continued to work with its long-term gardener on maintenance plans. We greatly appreciate the continued and generous support of Serra and Glenn Butash for funding the full maintenance and materials for this garden, a prominent feature in Olana’s landscape that is enjoyed by many visitors.

COLLECTIONS & EXHIBITIONS

For four decades, The Olana Partnership has employed curatorial and archival staff to work alongside professional staff at the NYS Bureau of Historic Sites to conserve, research, and interpret Olana’s nationally significant collections. This team provides the content that underpins the work of our Visitor Services and Education & Public Programs staff, including organizing a program of special exhibitions and site-specific contemporary art commissions.

The Olana Partnership’s 2023-2024 winter exhibition, Spectacle: Frederic Church and the Business of Art, concluded on March 31, and our summer exhibition, Afterglow concluded in October 2024. The Afterglow catalogue featured essays by Dr. Rebecca Bedell and the exhibition’s curator, Allegra Davis. This exhibition centered on two rarely seen paintings from private collections, To the Memory of Cole (1848) and The Evening Star (1858). In November, we launched A Closer Look in the Sharp Family Gallery. This rotating installation of

artworks from Olana’s collections offered visitors an opportunity to engage in dialogues about Church, his art, and their own reactions to the work.

2024 was a critical year of advance planning for Frederic Church 200, the international celebration of the bicentennial of Church’s birth in 2026. Led by Senior Consulting Curator and Curator Emerita at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, Frederic Church 200 will encompass a series of exhibitions, installations, and special programming at over 50 institutions around the world.

At Olana, Frederic Church: Global Artist, a special exhibition co-curated by Elzabeth Mankin Kornhauser, Tim Barringer, and Jennifer Raab, will be the focus of the year. In September 2024, The Olana Partnership hosted a convening of 14 scholars from across the U.S. as well as Australia, Colombia, and the United Kingdom, who are contributing essays to the exhibition publication, Frederic Church: Global Artist, to be published by Yale University Press.

In late 2024, The Olana Partnership was awarded a $300,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to fund a 30-month project to create a public online catalogue of works by Frederic Church in Olana’s collection. This initiative will represent a major cooperative undertaking between our curatorial staff and the Bureau of Historic Sites’ team and will provide access to Olana’s rich collections. The first element of this landmark project is anticipated to debut in 2026 as part of Frederic Church 200.

The curatorial team hosted in-depth visits for a number of scholars and museum colleagues in 2024, including: Cornell University Professor Dr. Cynthia Robinson and students; Casey Monroe, Ph.D., Senior Research Cataloguer at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Christian Ayne Crouch, Ph.D., Dean of Graduate Studies, Director, Center for Indigenous Studies at Bard College; Suzanne Kite, Director of the Wihanble S’a Center for Indigenous AI at Bard College; the Albany Institute of History and Art; the Hudson River Valley Institute at Marist College; the Florence Griswold Museum; and Historic Hudson Valley.

After 26 years as The Olana Partnership’s Librarian & Archivist, Ida Brier retired in June 2024. We have established the annual Ida Brier Archival Webinar in recognition of her remarkable contributions to Olana. In July 2024, Associate Curator Allegra Davis departed to begin graduate studies in art history at Boston University.

In June 2024, Maggie Dimock joined The Olana Partnership as Associate Curator, having most recently served as Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Greenwich Historical Society. That same month, Clare Fleming joined as Research Archivist, coming from the New York State Archives and Archives Partnership Trust.
