Did you know OLANA is a very special place in Hudson, New York? OLANA was designed by an artist named Frederic Church. Frederic Church was an artist, designer, and traveler who explored places all over the world.

He traveled to places like Mexico, Ecuador, Jamaica, and Italy, but he loved the Hudson Valley!

Frederic Church was part of a group of artists who were inspired by the Hudson River. This group of artists wanted to encourage people to appreciate nature and show people the beauty of the landscape in this part of The United States.

Frederic Church learned from the painter Thomas Cole who lived in Catskill, NY and taught Church how to draw nature. They would go on hikes together and draw what they saw.

Years later, Church created Olana with his wife Isabel, and lived at the main house on the property with his four children. At Olana, they designed a garden and an orchard, a special house for the family to live in, roads to travel and explore on, and a man-made lake. They even planted thousands of trees.

Frederic Church aprendió del pintor Thomas Cole, que vivía en Catskill, Nueva York, y le enseñó a Church a dibujar la naturaleza. Iban juntos de excursión y dibujaban lo que veían.

Años más tarde, Church creó a Olana con su esposa Isabel, y vivió en la casa principal de la propiedad con sus cuatro hijos. En Olana, diseñaron un jardín y un huerto, una casa especial para vivir en familia, caminos para viajar y explorar, y un lago artificial.

Frederic Church and his wife Isabel liked to travel. They went all over the world, explored different places, and brought back objects, art, and ideas from other parts of the world like Mexico, Ecuador, Jamaica, and the Middle East.

Look at this landscape painting of Mexico. What do you notice?

During his life, Church traveled to Mexico during the winter for his health and Mexico became a very important place for him.

Are there any places that are important to you and your family? Maybe it’s someplace you visit all the time or a place you’ve always wanted to go!

Frederic Church y su esposa Isabel les gustaba viajar. Recorrieron el mundo, exploraron diferentes lugares y trajeron objetos, arte e ideas de otras partes del mundo como México, Ecuador, Jamaica y el Medio Oriente.

Mira este cuadro del paisaje de México. ¿Qué nota? ¿Qué otro tipo de lugares son especiales para usted? ¿Por qué?

Draw or write what that special place looks like here What other kinds of places are special to you? Why?

n If you use the charcoal, it can be messy! You can use your finger to spread out or blend the lines you make with charcoal.

Church explored different parts of the world and painted what he saw. Inside your kit, you’ll find a sketchbook, drawing pencils, colored pencils, and something called a “viewfinder.” Use these materials to explore a place in your life more closely.

Take your materials and draw somewhere new or use them to explore a place you visit all the time… like your kitchen or bedroom!

Hold the “viewfinder” up to your eye and look through the empty space. You can hold it close to your eye or far away for a different view. What do you see? Use the viewfinder tool to help you decide what to focus on and draw.

Next, pick a material. Do you want to draw with a pencil, charcoal, or a colored pencil?

Pick a page in your sketchbook and draw what you see through your viewfinder. Try to focus on the big things you see first before drawing tiny details. Once you’ve used one material, try using another one!
