Church was part of a group of artists who were inspired by the Hudson River. This group of artists wanted to encourage people to appreciate nature and show people the beauty of the landscape in this part of The United States.

Did you know OLANA is a very special place in Hudson, New York? OLANA was designed by an artist named Frederic Church. Frederic Church was an artist, designer, and traveler who explored places all over the world. He traveled to places like Mexico, Ecuador, Jamaica, and Italy, but he loved the Hudson FredericValley!

Frederic Church learned from the painter Thomas Cole who lived in Catskill, NY and taught Church how to draw nature. They would go on hikes together and draw what they saw.
Years later, Church created Olana with his wife Isabel, and lived at the main house on the property with his four children. At Olana, they designed a garden and an orchard, a special house for the family to live in, roads to travel and explore on, and a man-made lake. They even planted thousands of trees.

Hold the “viewfinder” up to your eye and look through the empty space. You can hold it close to your eye or far away for a different view. What do you see? Use the viewfinder tool to help you decide what to focus on and draw.

Pick a page in your sketchbook and draw what you see through your viewfinder. Try to focus on the big things you see first before drawing tiny details. Once you’ve used one material, try using another one!
