A Hudson River School Vision

SPRING 2023

Dear Supporters and Friends,

The past six months has seen remarkable progress on our plans for The Frederic Church Center (FCC) and the larger capital development projects contained in Olana’s Strategic Landscape Design Plan (SLDP).

In December 2021 Assemblymember Didi Barrett announced $1 million in funding for the FCC with the support of Speaker Heastie. Subsequently, The Olana Partnership (TOP) was awarded two major grants through the 2022 Regional Economic Development Council process: a $1.4 million Empire State Development Market NY Regional Tourism Grant and $1.8 million Carbon Neutral Economic Development Grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The Market NY grant is a match for the $7,000,000 in private contributions that TOP had raised as of last July.

This public support ensures that the FCC will be a carbon neutral, allelectric facility and a model for public facilities across the state. Its design features a whole building systems approach to achieve a low environmental impact and reduced energy consumption with minimal maintenance.

TOP’s $10 million Capital Campaign continues to progress. In October our trustee Janet Dicke and her husband, Jim, pledged $1 million bringing the campaign total to $8 million This leveraging of private and public support is a prime illustration of the effectiveness of TOP’s partnership with NYS Parks.

"The new projects will build on the legacy of Olana - the visionary home, studio and landscape design of artist Frederic Church and his family The Frederic Church Center will add to this canvas and help to welcome patrons to one of the most strikingly beautiful places in New York State."
Governor Kathy Hochul

On December 13, 2022, Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado joined Commissioner Erik Kulleseid to announce a larger suite of major capital and site improvement projects at Olana, representing a combined public-private investment of $25 million. The FCC is the marquee project, and December’s announcement included the commitment to open the facility in 2024 as part of the celebration of the NYS Parks Centennial.

Another key component is the first phase of the Historic Farm Complex restoration. This includes relocating a temporary parking area to restore the historic kitchen garden, improving lighting, creating ADA parking near Cosy Cottage, and repairing the dam and spillway in the lake. With our mild winter, this work has been underway since November and will be completed in early autumn 2023.

Parks capital funds are supporting five additional projects: the construction of a new state-of-the-art maintenance facility; the restoration of exterior woodwork and paint on the Main House; the installation of an upgraded fiber optic network; and new comprehensive wayfinding and interpretive signage across the site. More about these projects follows below.

This level of funding and support for Olana is extraordinary and a clear demonstration of the power of our publicprivate partnership. I want to express our immense gratitude to those private donors whose early, lead support and the faith in our vision for Olana it represented made this all possible. In particular, I want to thank Steve Clearman, the Chair of TOP’s Capital Campaign Committee for not only providing a lead pledge of $1 million for what he has termed “the best investment in the Hudson Valley” but for his astute and frank counsel through thick and thin over the past seven years.

“With these $25 million in improvements, Olana will once again welcome visitors from in and out of our state to take in breathtaking views and education programs. Thanks to everyone’s commitment to this partnership and we invite everyone to come rediscover Olana.”

“Olana, crown jewel of the Hudson Valley, is a mecca for those who enjoy American art, great architecture, stunning hikes and breathtaking viewsheds. The new Frederic Church Visitor Center will introduce visitors to the man behind the landmark, a 19th century painter, architect, farmer and social activist whose legacy remains timely well into the 21st century. I was pleased to recently secure a $1 million legislative grant to help support the construction of this new, carbon-neutral visitors center and I thank Governor Kathy Hochul for both her steadfast appreciation of Olana and her recognition of its economic impact on our region and the state.”

“Fifty-six years ago private citizens and New York State joined together to save Olana from destruction. In the succeeding decades, Olana’s publicprivate partnership has become a national exemplar for the stewardship of public places. Today, The Olana Partnership is thrilled to mark the next, brilliant chapter in Olana’s story, one in which the commitment of our board and supporters has been joined by New York State to make the fullness of Frederic Church’s vision apparent for new generations.”

“The more than 200,000 annual visitors to Olana will be greeted by a spectacular and spacious new orientation site before enjoying the grounds where they can walk, hike, picnic, paint, photograph and dream much the way the Church family did centuries ago. We are grateful for our connection with The Olana Partnership, collaborating state agencies and the $1 million State and Municipal Facilities Program grant secured by Assemblymember Didi Barrett supporting the Olana State Historic Site.”

“Through the Market New York program, I LOVE NY supports important regional tourism projects like the improvements at Olana. This unique Path Through History attraction helps tell the story of the Hudson Valley, and spectacularly adds to all there is to see and do in the region, from historic homes to sculpture parks to exceptional food and beverage offerings. Olana’s upgrades will transform the visitor experience at this must-see destination that welcomes guests from all over the world.”

“NYSERDA looks forward to following the progress of the improvements at the Olana State Historic site, which will serve as a model for clean and resilient design with the incorporation of energy efficiency and electrification features, clean renewable solar energy and electric vehicle charging for an overall lower carbon footprint. This project will enhance what is already a gem in the Hudson community while providing the health benefits of a greener site from the visitorfacing perspective as well as maintenance behind the scenes in support of the Climate Act goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85% by 2050.”

CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN

HISTORIC FARM COMPLEX RESTORATION

The restoration of Olana’s Historic Farm Complex is a key element of the Strategic Landscape Design Plan and will be fundamental to the expansion of our educational and public programming as well as addressing a more complete and diverse interpretation of the site.

The first phase of the Farm Complex project is underway and will be completed this autumn. This project includes adding accessible ADA parking space behind Cosy Cottage, drainage work around the Wagon House, a new, relocated parking lot and a rebuilt dam/ spillway at the lake. The total project cost is shared between funding from NYS Parks and The Olana Partnership.

SITE-WIDE SIGNAGE IMPROVEMENTS

As part of the larger capital development project, NYS Parks is undertaking a comprehensive replacement and enhancement of wayfinding, safety, and interpretive signage across the site. This includes a new main entrance sign that will represent the publicprivate partnership prominently for the first time. Working with the LA Group and Bureau of Historic Sites, OPRHP and The Olana Partnership staff are collaborating on all these signage projects, which will be installed in 2024.
