P

resented with the opportunity to produce and edit a digital magazine for OLALA INTERIORS, I naturally jumped at the chance. Who could refuse creating spreads of beautifully curated homes and living spaces - with absolutely zero chance of ever having to use an ugly image - a designers dream really?! We aim to showcase OLALA INTERIORS team members with every issue - giving our readers a peek at the fabulous people that make up this exclusive brand. In this issue, we thought we’d start with the two exceptional women who run the show - Schanè Anderson, CEO and Creative Director - entrepreneur extraordinaire and possibly one of the most fabulous women I know and Debbie Steinhobel, Managing Director, multitasker of note and all-round super woman. Schanè was a recent finalist in the Regional Businesswoman of the Year awards – and although just missing out on the overall title, she still managed to give her hardworking team a reason to celebrate [in style of course!]. Our cover feature home, designed by architect Tracy Levinson of LevEco Architects, is one of three homes featured in this issue. Definitely one of my personal favourites, the interior design of this home was inspired by the owners love of the Art Deco period. The romanticism of that era was used to inject the space with a sense of old world glamour and soft, understated luxury.

The Hout Bay apartment, decorated by Michael Anderson from the Cape Town OLALA INTERIORS office, manages to bring depth to the home’s modern simplicity. Have a look at how to ‘Get the Look’ in your own home, with some of the beautiful pieces used in the Heavenly Hout Bay apartment. Planning your space is key and popping in elegantly curated pieces helps create a high end, sumptuous look. Luxe leisure anyone? The sun-splashed, seaside holiday retreat situated in Zimbali Coastal Estate is a spectacular getaway. From the moment you enter the home, with its light infused stairwell and bold art works, luxury relaxation is mandatory! If you’re on the hunt for wallpaper inspiration, our wallpaper feature on page 12 compiled by Michael Anderson, showcases some on trend options that are guaranteed to bring forth pops of pizazz, no matter the space. We finish off with our Designer Column – focusing on the OLALA INTERIORS designers – what makes them tick, what do they envision for us with future trends, the design process, inspiration and influences – Michael Anderson chats to us about his unique design approach. Summer is in the air – embrace the change of season and be inspired...

MEET THE OLALA

PARTNERS Offering a full decorating and design consultancy, partners Schanè Anderson and Debbie Steinhobel design the full spectrum of interiors for homes. A powerhouse pair of strong, ambitious and, of course, fabulous individuals, its no surprise that OLALA INTERIORS is what it is today.

Being a creative, Schanè really wanted to study art but at the time it was not to be so instead enrolled to study law. It quickly became evident that litigating was not her passion and whilst working in the financial industry, she was tasked with putting together offices – finding the space and doing the layout and designs free-hand. Fortunately, the external designer loved it and Schanè jumped at the opportunity to make her foray into the world of interior design. Within 6 months the entrepreneurial bug bit and OLALA INTERIORS was established. The first showroom opened in Cresta Centre in 1993, and in 1996, Schanè purchased a property in Melville, JHB that was big enough to house her fabric library, showroom, office and soft furnishing workroom. In 2002 she set-up a small independent sewing workroom by gifting industrial sewing machines and working tables to her longest serving seamstresses. That sewing workroom remained in operation until their retirement.

// SCHANÈ ANDERSON CEO & Creative Director

H

aving started OLALA INTERIORS 25 years ago with the personal motto of “come to work to be excellent” and fierce pride in her work and product, Schanè has an unquenchable love for the interior design business. “It is one of the few careers where age and experience counts in our favour – creatives are known to be at their best after 50…so I’m in the right time warp now,” says Schanè.

// 08

In 2009 Schanè replanted the business in Ballito on the KZN North Coast. The first 6 – 8 months were really very hard, and once she dug her heels in, she really started looking at growing the business. And the business did indeed grow. Schanè assisted the start-up of another independent softs workroom in 2010 and opened her cabinetry factory in January 2011 which meant that the business now offered a full turn-key service. OLALA INTERIORS was in the envious position to design and manufacture everything from front to back door. By

// Debbie Steinhobel and Schanè Anderson in their happy place - working their magic in the world of interior design. 2014 the business was too large for her to manage alone. After mentioning to her lawyer, Gavin Steinhobel, that she was looking for a business partner, he suggested chatting to his wife. So in July of that year, Schanè took in an experienced partner, successful business woman Debbie Steinhobel, who for 12 years owned Home Flair Ballito, a proudly South African furniture retail and decor store. They hit it off straight away. With an absolute love of travel and learning, Schanè has traveled the globe. She traveled through the UK, Europe and East Berlin with her 2 brothers and attended trade shows in London, Birmingham, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

She was hosted by Kohler in Chicago, the industrial town of Kohler and Las Vegas, attending kitchen and bathroom design shows. In March 2017, the Debbie and Schanè were invited by Ngwenya Glass to collaborate with internationally acclaimed glassblowers in developing new product. Many of the lights designed are now sold in the OLALA INTERIORS retail showroom. To ensure OLALA stays current with design trends, the partners regularly attend Homi Milano (the internationally acclaimed Furniture Fair) in Milan, as well as the largest international European furniture, kitchen and bathroom Design Fair in Cologne, and IMM international seminars in OLALA INTERIORS

// Debbie Steinhobel and Schanè Anderson on a recent trip to New York. Design Trends. This exposes them to the hottest and latest interior trends, furniture and fabric designs. OLALA INTERIORS won ROMO International Top Interior Designer of the Year for KZN Award for three consecutive years 2016, 2017 and 2018. The 2018 KZN HF Top Design & Specifier of the Year Award was also awarded to OLALA INTERIORS. “I am blessed with mental agility and flexibility, sheer determination, work ethic and refusal to give up. I adapt, have a real love for people, believe in collaboration and can make a decision at the drop of a hat. I believe in

generosity and authenticity. My friend Illona Schram always encourages me to do things better, faster, more…”, shares Schanè. Schanè enjoys estate living at Brettenwood Coastal Estate with her husband and son. Building their home some 7 years ago was one of the best things ever. “We love our home. It is unusual and modest, has a peaceful setting and we are blessed to have lovely sea and dam views over the Estate greenbelt boundary”.

They have also travelled extensively through the States and having family down under means also having visited those far away places – although not as frequently as they would like. Her inspiration: People’s energy and aspirations. I love that people aspire and dream, and are humbled by their trust to bring those dreams into fruition.

Her loves: “Traveling makes my heart beat faster” says Schanè, who met her husband Keith scuba diving – and

Our successes are built on our fantastic teams of magnificent people who give their best every day. I am thankful for my amazing and loyal business partner, Debbie, it is and will continue being fabulous doing life with her.” // 10

Find inspiration everywhere, be curious and passionate. Always listen to your clients and deliver projects with enthusiasm. Travel and experience as much as possible. Most of all, love what you do & you will do what you love!”

A

fter studying and graduating as a pharmacist at Rhodes University, it didn’t take long for Debbie to realise that her passion would lead her on a completely different career path.

Through her love for beautiful things such as decor and art, walking into a space and being able to visualise its potential and her ability to work with and match colours and textiles steered her into a career in the interior design industry. “I now get to live my passion every day”, laughs Debbie. Opening her first decor shop Home Flair in 2005, she and her husband very soon thereafter opened another branch in Ballito. After several successful years running Home Flair and meeting with (and hitting if off with!) Schanè from OLALA INTERIORS in 2014, the duo decided to merge their respective brands into the OLALA INTERIORS super brand. “It is great to have a partner and friend in business and through our strategising, networking and growth, we opened our new retail and office space in the Ballito Junction Mall early last year. We are thrilled to see where our journey has taken us over the past few years and look forward to our future success and development in Ballito and across the country!” Debbie and Schanè have recently returned from New York as guests of Home Fabrics and from China where they attended three trade shows. The duo are very excited to another trip to Paris and London early January 2019 to source the leading trends for next year - they will again be hosted by ROMO, to enjoy sneak previews of the upcoming fabrics and wallpapers launching in May 2019. As an interior designer, Debbie feels that it is her duty to combine her knowledge of design with an eye for style to create and deliver a client’s brief through a seamless and efficient project process. “I listen carefully to my clients and

// DEBBIE STEINHOBEL Managing Director design spaces that are reflective of their unique personalities and needs”, says Debbie. Every project undertaken is bespoke and different – the end goal is to always create a sanctuary for clients to come home to, with stylish finishes that individuals or families can live with comfortably – and of course to do so on time and within budget! What inspires you? I am inspired every day by something as simple as the shade of a flower or the colours of a sunset - this can spark an idea or direction for a project. A home is space that evolves when we focus on what makes us happy. We create a space that meets our needs, expresses our character and enriches our lives. A house is a design and structure…a home is the happy space you create to live in! I am also incredibly inspired by my very talented business partner and friend, Schanè. Schanè has just returned from Dubai where she won an award for Interior Design for Clifton Splendour at the International Property Awards. She also received a five star award for Best Interior Design in a Private Residence and was nominated for Best Interior Design in Africa! Debbie lives with her husband, two children and their two Pekinese dogs and matriarch, Dora the cat, in their recently completed dream home on Simbithi Golf Estate. Her loves? Leisurely walks through the estate grounds with her family, and as an early riser, she begins her day with balancing Yoga postures. OLALA INTERIORS

LIFE OF

PLANTS

T

he urban jungle trend is one that seems here to stay. For good reason. The life of plants and us living within and alongside them provides us with plenty of positive energy and of course more oxygen. The idea of bringing more greenery into the home, with plants on window sills, in floor and wall planters and boldly into decor, is a fantastic way of living in harmony with nature.

Embrace the trend of bringing green into your home. One easy way to do so, is to use fabulous botanical inspired wallpaper.

Wallpaper, cushions and carpets in floral patterns, as well as vases and knick-knacks in the shape of leaves and flowers, will complete the look and make your home bloom throughout the year.

Wallpaper has returned to fashion thanks to ultrastylish prints, dimensional fabrics and new materials that make it easy to install and, yes, to remove. Wallpaper prints and patterns can instantly dress up a space. Tropical foliage, botanical, jungle and forest motifs are a great way to introduce a little wilderness to your well-ordered urban lifestyle. Contact one of the OLALA INTERIORS designers to assist in the selection of your next great wall transformation or visit the OLALA INTERIORS showroom in Ballito for a first hand look at the exciting ranges available.

PROJECT HOUSE BEAST LOCATION SHEFFIELD BEACH ARCHITECT TRACY LEVINSON PHOTOGRAPHY GRANT PITCHER CLIENT MTAWARIRA FAMILY

Tasked with the full interior design function, from reviewing the electrical and plumbing layouts, bathroom and kitchen designs, specifying the sanware and finishes and then finally manufacturing and installation, this home certainly lives up to the design brief of elegant contemporary with a nostalgic reference to romantic Art Deco.

I

nvolved right from the start, Schanè Anderson was with Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira when he broke ground for his family home. “That was very special. I wanted to give subtle homage to our national hero’s sport by feeding off the rugby ball shape, and you will see reference to it on some of the custom-made furniture produced for the home”, says Schanè. With a brief to design a family home on a very steep site and to create a suitable garden for their two children to play in, Architect Tracy Levinson, Owner of LevEco Architects, decided to split the home over three levels, ensuring varying levels of privacy for the family. The first level is at the top of the garage and entrance, which is visible to the road and guests. The rest of the house is ‘hidden’ on lower levels, creating a sense of expectation, and maintaining the owner’s privacy. The next level is the main living area of the home. As you walk down the first flight of stairs, the house opens up to you, showing the kitchen, and a large grassed ‘courtyard play ground’, and then the lounge, dining area, through to the patio and then the sea view beyond. The idea was that the home reveals itself in stages, culminating in the large patio space, with the long floating lap pool, emphasising the 180 degree sea view over Brettenwood Coastal Estate. The lounge and living areas all open onto the grassed

// 18

// 20

courtyard, as well as the sea side patio, with timber pergolas in strategic areas. The idea is that this house is cool in summer, warm in winter, takes advantage of the breezes and doesn’t feel hemmed in by anything. More stages of privacy and levels follow. Behind the lounge area is a children’s play room, hidden beyond the feature wall. This allows the children to still be part of the main living area, not too far from the family, but also have their privacy, and somewhere that can be closed off a little. However, this space still links directly with the pool patio side and the grassed garden courtyard, allowing for free flow for the kid’s maximum use and entertainment. The next level is down another flight of stairs leading to the bedroom wing, hidden below the living space, and underneath the floating pool. This is the final private area

of the house, with the lovely large main bedroom suite with walking dressing room and large bathroom situated in the most private part of this wing. The 4 bedrooms downstairs are all en-suite and a PJ lounge with large TV and coffee station allows the family to retire downstairs in the evening, to close the day. Kuziva and Beast immediately loved the Legendary Land Carlucci contemporary bold printed damask used on the scatter cushions, and that was the start of the lounge area and from where everything else developed. The opulent Zoffany wallpaper is also reminiscent of the fine inlay patterns produced in the Art Deco period featuring a sun-ray pattern in a medium scale geometric layout and is printed with opaque and transparent inks onto foil.

// ART DECO inspired wallpaper, lighting and volumes of space complete the elegant look of the space. Custom made throw pillows made from interesting fabrics soften the scheme.

OLALA INTERIORS

As Ku wanted a cosy and comfortable // reading area, to curl up and read, the OLALA INTERIORS team gave her a saturated velvet curl up sofa and tightened up the seating area.

The high ceilings and open rafter areas add to the light and airy feel of the house - an important request from the clients. // Open rafters in the living areas, and large doors and windows, all add to the light, open and airy feel of the house. With these all framed with black trims, including the roof rafters, and door aluminium, it adds a dramatic and modern twist.

// 22

OLALA INTERIORS manufactured the dining table using solid Kiaat for the top and it is lit up with a Molecule Chandelier creating a sophisticated and retrospective ambiance. The Clinton Friedman silk-screens are artist’s proofs, and when shown, Schanè immediately purchased them for the home - and for Beast and Kuziva it was love at first sight! The kitchen is designed to open up onto the central grassed courtyard/play area. It is the linking element of the house, with views of all the spaces. Just when the design process started, Schanè was fortunate enough to be invited by Kohler to visit their showrooms in Chicago and the little town of Kohler, and she loved how they used “tunnels” to accentuate passing through or transitioning from one space to another. It’s almost honoring Corbusier, who loved low entrances opening onto voluminous spaces.

We have a fabulous team that takes our concepts from technical drawings for manufacture, right through to installation.” Schanè Anderson

DINING AREA features a distinctive solid Kiaat 12 seater table, topped off with a Molecule Chandelier and Clinton Friedman silk-screens. //

Also, when you watch rugby, coming out of the tunnel is when the crowd goes ballistic – Schanè wanted to re-create that feeling and OLALA INTERIORS lowered the ceiling from the ground reception into the kitchen and clad it with Oggie flooring – it came out fabulously. From the kitchen the view accentuates the lovely abstract painting by Mabette Vemaak. Lighting, as always, is really important in a home. The circular pendants in the kitchen and over the stairs were imported, while all other lights were locally sourced. The 2 stairwells are both set against large windows, letting in light and a view to the garden beyond. These staircases are each a feature, differing from each other, as one is linked to the main entrance, and used by everyone,

and the other one leads to the more private family bedroom area below. The study also has a lovely view across the estate and sea, and is a lovely space away from the main house in which Kuziva can work and do her studies, whilst keeping a watchful eye on what’s happening below. As Beast travels away from home on numerous occasions, Kuziva asked that the OLALA INTERIORS team frame up a map for the kids playroom so that she can show the children where he is in the world at any given time. “We printed it up, full scale and in happy colours, so that the kids can enjoy and learn at the same time. We finished it off with Zinc cushions and then some!”, laughs Schanè.

TROPHY & STUDY: Beast has an enviable collection of jerseys and caps, that will continue grow in years to come, so instead of traditionally framing the jerseys individually, we manufactured a trophy cupboard. There he can hang as many jerseys as he wants, swap them around, and include his caps and shoes. //

// The Geberit vanity unit with the hand cut Briolette translucent dusk glass

LAYERED TEXTURES give the master suite a luxurious // atmosphere. The master bedroom has been draped in Romo Bitter Chocolate, and Marquise dramatic large scale diamond wallpaper design inspired by traditional weaving processes.

// The sheer size of the magnificent sonic master bath required an over

scaled backdrop, reminding us of a more romantic Deco time era, which leads into the mirrored dressing room, creating lovely light reflections and space to the area. “A couple of years ago, I saw beveled mirrored panel walls in an old hotel in Morningside and always wanted to find the ideal place to use that concept”, says Schanè.

White voile sheers were used in the lounge to ensure the beautiful bay view was always in sight. White Bamboo venetian’s were then used in the bedrooms for added functionality. The bedrooms are light and fresh with crisp white percale linen, topped with vivacious scatter cushions. Wallpaper was used to create added warmth and interest on feature walls.

Pendants lights, with dimmable LED globes, were also added to each bedside, with the clever use of wireless transmitters and switch’s to ensure they could be operated independently without the need to chase the existing walls. Beautiful soft viscose rugs were used in each room for added colour and cosiness. Make the most of your space. Shape your dining experience by choosing furniture that reflects your personal style.

O ECLECTIC - Don’t be afraid to use eclectic design to mix and match various styles and even time periods. This allows for more freedom to put a design together that works in your budget. Ensure that your design remains cohesive, remember that above all, the space should remain functional. Make a plan for your design before you begin, and do your best to keep function at the forefront. Don’t be afraid to edit as you go. If

// 40

there are ever so many design elements present that it gets difficult to identify the functionality at first glance, your best bet is to remove less-necessary pieces until functionality becomes clear again. You’ll also want to keep the room unified. Work on finding a few small details—colours, shapes, patterns—that you can repeat in various aspects of your design. This ensures all of your design elements feel intentional, rather than haphazardly thrown together.

Briefed to create a contemporary, comfortable holiday home for a delightful family of five, this 2-storey home with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean & the green forest surrounds of Zimbali Coastal Estate, the team set out to design something subtle that could co-exist with the modern building.

T

he OLALA INTERIORS team created a tasteful, subtly contemporary and layered interiors scheme for a private family holiday home, providing a turn-key service from beds and linen, crockery and cutlery to all the furniture, rugs, decor and window treatments. Even though the space is a holiday home, the owners still wanted it to feel like a proper home. So, filling it with personal, much loved collectibles such as a prized guitar signed by the artist Prince, pictures of Muhammad Ali, Madiba and Floyd Mayweather, accomplished this. Opening up immediately into a light flooded, triple height staircase, the eye is immediately drawn to the oversized wall art and bronze sculpture “All of Me by KZN artist, Marke Meyer. OLALA INTERIORS

// 45

The first floor contains an open plan living area opening out onto the spacious deck via floor to ceiling sliding doors. The spaces were designed with a similar, linking palette of colour and materials, including strong grey tones, soft luxurious fabrics and vibrant wallpapers, complemented by natural wood, beautiful rugs and accessories.

The intimate and functional family living room, which looks out onto the patio and the ocean beyond, is modern with clean lines. The especially comfy six-seater sofa is flanked by two custom-made chairs. The glass topped, wooden legged coffee table and side tables (designed and manufactured by OLALA) are deco inspired adding a touch of old school elegance.

Bold Scion wallpaper draws the eye in the informal TV room off the kitchen. While the custom-made display shelving unit made by OLALA and nested glass and wood coffee tables ensure added texture and dimension.

All the bedrooms are upstairs on the top level and the client requested a continuation of the feeling of understated luxury, which has clearly been achieved.

The dining room has at its center, a custom-made OLALA Kiaat dining table. The eight accompanying low-slung dining chairs are upholstered in white reconstituted leather for durability. The natural fibre sisal rug demarcates the dining area beautifully.

A WORD FROM ONE OF OUR

DESIGNERS Having recently relocated to the Mother City to set up an Olala footprint in Cape Town, we chatted to Regional Manager and Designer, Michael Anderson.

D

escribe yourself in three words. Determined. Passionate. Practical.

How & why did you get into the design Industry? I think I have always had creative interests and enjoy the process of refining ideas and crafting them into real life experiences. I studied fashion design at LISOF in Johannesburg, and then worked in the industry for about 10 years for various fashion brands, across men’s wear as well as handbags and luggage. How would you describe your design style signature? I would say my preference would be something along the lines of mid-century modern. I love clean lines and minimal spaces, rather focusing on the texture, colour and finish of the core elements as apposed to additional clutter.

Creating focused points of interest to give balance and harmony to a space. I like to work in layers, building from the ground up, often with more boldness as they progress.

What do you love about being a designer & where do you draw your inspiration from? I love how there is no limit from where one can draw inspiration. For me it’s often the process which is the most fascinating, as it is continuously changing. It can be quite dizzying at times. I like to sometimes think of myself as a chef, meticulously selecting the right ingredients and combining them with others, balancing the quantities and hoping they all come together in the end. Each project is like a new menu, every room, a new recipe, building on the knowledge and experiences from all previous recipes, and customers. Tell us about some of your projects & what you love about them? One of the best challenges of the job comes in its varied scope of

supply. I have curated wine cellars and bars, and designed residential bars that are restaurant worthy. We have projects that need to come in on tight budgets, offering further return on investment for developers and investors, and still look amazing. These really push you as a designer as one must start with the practical and then work your way back aesthetically. Anything exciting that you are working on at the moment? I am currently working on a decor proposal for a guest house, which has acquired four apartments in a brandnew development called The Docklands in Greenpoint to accommodate the growth and overflow from the guest house. This as an opportunity to give the business a fresh look that is more boutique-like and to open themselves up to a more discerning clientele in what is already a saturated market place.

A few of Michael’s favourite things: Left - Stag Barstool; Middle - Trail Armchair; Right - Mayfair Brass Table Lamp.

Favourite colours, textures & furniture pieces? I love grey, all 50 shades, accompanied by botanical greens and soft pinks. I love natural textures; wood, marble, stone and metal, contrasted with tinted glass and mirror. When it comes to furniture, I enjoy working with classics that have a contemporary take on them, icons reborn into a new world. Your philosophy on design & life? I believe that they are one and the same, two sides of the same coin, as the life we live, is by design, not by chance. Design considerations? The needs of the space. The needs of the client. My own needs. Functionality or appeal? Functionality itself is very appealing, however, if you can tap into the emotive design space, then there is little room for reason.
