EDITOR the relaxed and sumptuous indoor outdoor living that the KZN North Coast is famous for.

A

s the year comes to a close, and the closing out of a decade and ushering in of a brand new one, there is much to look forward to. As an even number, the year 2020 has a balance and symmetry, very much like design.

In this issue, we celebrate and share three homes just oozing inspirational luxury and elegance. Although very different in their design style, the overall understated luxury and attention to the design detail remains constant. We kick off with Fabulous Fresnaye where Schanè Anderson created layer upon layer of rich and textured velvets, fabrics and wall-coverings with coveted contemporary furniture (the Opiani occasional tables by Andreas Kowalewski are to die for) and custom-made pieces, all balanced by a deliciously dark palette.

Debbie Steinhobel once again delivered understated elegance with a large family home located in KwaZulu Natal that guarantees easy, luxurious living. Debbie managed to effortlessly capture the spirit of

And finally there is the gorgeous home in Bishopscourt Cape Town that Michael Anderson is currently working on. It may still be a work in progress, but it has plenty of fabulousness that needed to be showcased, now! Look out for more of this home in future issues. Michael also curated our Shop the Look feature (page 66), with some on trend right now items to inspire and achieve stylishness.

Because it’s the season of giving (and being thankful for what we have), we’ve shared a bit about the charities that OLALA INTERIORS support. Summerhill House is a non-profit based in Etete that provides for children that have been orphaned, abandoned or displaced - including lots of love and family. While the Litter4Tokens is a campaign that educates about the importance of recycling whilst at the same time feeding and clothing children and families from impoverished communities.

Britta McMeekin is our Designer to profile this time round and she shares what makes her tick along with her design style (page 70).

A CHARITY WE SUPPORT

SUMMERHILL HOUSE A non-profit that provides lots of love and family for children that have been orphaned, abandoned or displaced.

Started 12 years ago, this nonprofit has been the vision of Paula Owen and Esther Lynn, affectionately known as Gogo to the Etete community.

At Summerhill, the core focus has always been about providing for children (orphaned, abandoned and/or displaced) one of the most important things they’ve lost which is Love, provided by family. // 10

Families help a child feel safe, loved, secure & ready to thrive, and that’s why Summerhill’s model mirrors a family unit as closely as possible - with each house holding 6 children and 1 housemother.

Programmes for 2020 include: feeding (food parcels for needy families and holiday feeding), reading, homework assistance, social work, youth and sports (soccer & netball).

On the village side, SummerHill’s vision entails building 4 homes with a housing capacity of 24 children (1 Housemother and 6 children in each home). To date, they have built 2 homes which are now nearly full. Their hope is to complete the building of House 3 and 4 in 2020.

SUMMERHILL HOUSE IS BUILT & FUNDED BY LOCAL BUSINESSES & INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS, WHICH GOES TO SHOW THE STRENGTH IN WORKING TOGETHER. Beautifully positioned in Fresnaye in Cape Town, this home oozes sophistication and understated glamour.

ecluded and protected from the infamous Cape Town winds, and comfortably nestled on the slopes of Lion’s Head, all the spaces within this three storey home make full use of the picturesque views of the rocky coastline and Cape Town’s central business district below.

Schanè Anderson, Creative Director & CEO of OLALA INTERIORS, who led the team of this project, says “The home is layered with rich, sumptuous velvets, incredibly high-end fabrics, wallcoverings and furniture interspersed with bespoke pieces made from natural elements such as brass and wood feature strongly, all exquisitely offset by the sophisticated dark palette.”

“The Odessa Dining Table by Mauro Lipparini is a vision of natural minimalism with clean-cut shapes and dynamic lines.�

In the dining room, the sleek and slender ODESSA Dining Table by Mauro Lipparini is angled like an airplane wing, with the table top appearing to float above the double arch of the folded steel feet. An AGNES Chandelier by Lindsey Adelman featured above, was originally conceived as a candelabra. The chandelier takes its inspiration from the fictional heroine of the same name, a worker in the world’s oldest profession during the 1849 California Gold Rush. The modular system would allow Agnes easy setup in her makeshift “workspace.”

In this version, glowing glass tubes replace the candles. Articulated joints allow the glass to be arranged in a multitude of ways.

Schanè elaborates on the unique, glass topped Teak Root Centre Table, “The shape is enough to enhance the beauty of any room. Every single teak root is unique and has a pure, natural shape which pays tribute to the spirit of nature.”

The MASTER BEDROOM is glamorous and seductive. Luxuriant velvet fabric used on the custom-made headboard by OLALA INTERIORS, high-end, hand knotted Orca Overdyed black rug, and silky scatters complement the Opiani occasional tables by Andreas Kowalewski used as bedside pedestals.

Three practical and simple tables, made from solid wood, these tables reveal both the natural beauty of the materials used - in this case, American walnut and black-stained ash - as well

LITTER4TOKENS A campaign that educates about the importance of recycling whilst at the same time feeding and clothing children and families from impoverished communities.

C

lare Swithenbank-Bowman is the director and founder of Litter4Tokens Campaign which launched in 2015 at the Ithemba Labasha Community Centre in Shakashead. Driving through this KwaZulu Natal North Coast community, with a high unemployment and hunger, it struck her how much litter was polluting the environment.

This litter had value as a recycled material and could be used to buy food to feed the community. The idea of feeding the community and cleaning up the environment developed into the LITTER4TOKENS CAMPAIGN with the assistance of Doreen Yengwa, Debbie Joubert and Elna Rootman from iThemba Labasha Community Centre and Kyle Crichton from Lions Ballito.

Litter4Tokens is about community members and schools collecting recyclable material being rewarded for their efforts with tokens to exchange for food, clothes or goods at the token shop at Ithemba Labasha.

Each bag of squashed recyclables brought into the centre on a Thursday gets one token. Dolphin Coast Waste Management collects the full bags from the campaign locations.

The token shop is stocked by the larger North Coast community as well as sponsors such as Olala Interiors, private donors, Dolphin Coast residents and parents from Ashton International College, Umhlali Prep and future other schools to come. This is proving to be a huge success for the local community as well as looking after the cleanliness of their community and the environment. The project has grown from one school to now 7 with more in the pipeline.

The aim of the Litter4Tokens campaign is to instill pride, cleanliness and put respect back into the community by encouraging hard work and in turn help feed and clothe families through donations.� // 32

LITTER4TOKENS & PETCO SCHOOL CAMPAIGN Cleanup Litter4Tokens together with LIFESAVER was launched into schools in Kwadukuza in Feb.2017. The aim is to EDUCATE CHILDREN & PARENTS about the importance of caring for their environment and our oceans, as well as helping feed and water families.

PETCO and the Litter4Tokens team visit schools and educate children on how they can pick up litter, sort into the bags supplied by PETCO and redeem tokens received for dry goods, toiletries or clothes at the token shop at Ithemba Labasha Community Centre.

The money received by Litter4Tokens from the litter collected by Dolphin Coast Waste Management is used to purchase more dry goods for the token shops.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Assist Litter4Tokens with funding to supply more icon LIFESAVERS to remote schools to assist with clean drinkable water.

Partner with Litter4Tokens to launch L4T at your school. Recycling bags provided by PETCO and monthly reporting is undertaken to let you know how many recycling bags are collected.

Allow Litter4Tokens to use rebates from this to fund token shops.

Arrange collection points at schools to encourage parents to donate dry goods i.e. rice, mielie meal, flour, cooking oil or old unwanted used clothes, shoes etc.

PETCO will sponsor icon LIFESAVER jerry cans, signage and clear bags for each participating school to highlight the partnership and support for our communities and environment that your school is showing. Litter4Tokens promotes participating schools on all available marketing platforms to show support to the environment and communities.

An understated elegance but still with all the comfort and homeliness, this KwaZulu Natal home guarantees easy, luxuriously living.

A

pproached in late 2017 by the gregarious, humble couple who wanted to build a dream home for themselves and their two teenage children, Debbie Steinhobel, Managing Director of OLALA INTERIORS, jumped at the opportunity to make their dream a reality. “The couple had been patiently waiting for the right time for this project and wanted it to be understated, elegant but still comfortable and homely. A place that they could retire to after a busy day to relax and unwind�, says Debbie.

Built over a double plot, the home is just shy of 1,500 square meters and boasts three swimming pools and seven bedrooms. Because the family have a large extended family whom they love to entertain and accommodate, it was important that each bedroom in the home have its own personality and style. // 38

To integrate the design into the wider environment, Debbie and the OLALA INTERIORS team made use of soft colours and the warmth of the timber, blending the home into the backdrop and lending the home a humble look despite it’s incredible size.

The kitchen is undeniably the heart of this home.

With a grandiose central island and numerous hobs with downdraft extraction units, it is a chef’s dream.

“The breath-taking views while at the cook’s post is accentuated by the swimming pool and fire pit beyond.

Striking pendant lights turn up the glamour”, adds Debbie.

The design works so perfectly because there is a lovely flow to the kitchen with everything required is within close reach.

The CALACATTA NEOLITH Island and seamless prep bowl have oak and grey glass cupboards above with Sleek Concrete Caeserstone insert on the back unit. The clients own dining table and chairs were incorporated into the design and specially imported chandeliers brighten the space.

There are also integrated fridge and freezers in the show kitchen and a larger fridge in the scullery for when the family entertain. The laundry with floating oak shelves and scullery fitted with Kubus Undermount Sink with Grohe K7 mixer, are efficiently and beautifully laid out.

SMEG appliances specifically chosen for their rose gold detail finish off this sleek modern design.

The team of skilled cabinetry, stone and metal artisans involved in the making of this kitchen produced a strikingly beautiful and functional space.”

by a more neutral and monochromatic pallet. Custom made sofa and armchairs in soft and luxurious velvets juxtaposed by texture through the jacquard scatters. A variety of indoor plants were scattered throughout the home in order to ground this modern setting.

TO VIEW OUR PROJECT VIDEO

riginally standing unoccupied for four long years, this Cape Town property has been thoroughly renovated into a gorgeously contemporary home with a distinct art deco feel.

“The existing kitchen was totally removed, and rebuilt in its own individual space, with the existing bathroom renovated into a scullery”, says Michael Anderson from OLALA INTERIORS Cape Town, who spearheaded this project.

Throughout the home, all carpets were removed and engineered wood was installed in a herringbone formation and sealed with an ash toned wood treatment. As well as evoking a classic feeling of homes built around the 1920s, the herringbone design in light ash visually enlarges and brightens the space. “It adds lightness, and is a beautiful background for highlighting furniture and accessories”, adds Michael.

A large family, consisting of several family members required a large enough sofa that everyone could sit comfortably and enjoy intimate family time, so OLALA INTERIORS designed and manufactured a 7m long u-shaped sofa, upholstered using a fibre guarded fabric for added durability.

The existing fireplace was cladded with marble and a dark stained engineered wood mantel. The TV column was also cladded in the same engineered boards that were used on the adjacent fireplace mantel for added warmth.

All existing ceiling down-lighters were replaced with dimmable LEDs, adding ample, beautifully contemporary (and eco friendly) lighting to the home. Decorative accent lighting was added throughout, with chandeliers including the large Spiral Tier Pendant in Satin Gold in the TV lounge (see opposite), the stunning Five Armed Satin Gold pendant in the formal lounge; glass blown pendants in the master suite and handwoven pendant lights in the guest suite.

Wave sheer curtains in beige were fitted in all the bedrooms to ensure consistency throughout the home. When viewed from the exterior, it is impossible to tell which room is which. Each bedroom was fitted with an individual selection of curtaining which were all lined with the same beige blackout lining for enhanced sleep consistency.

Gold textured vinyl wallpaper was paired back the linen printed scatters and hand woven pendant lights for a more natural and earthly look in this bedroom. Wireless transmitters were installed for the use of the retrofitted pendant lights as well as USB multi-plugs at all bedsides and dressers.

We spoke to Ballito based Interior Designer, Britta McMeekin, about her designs and her thoughts on the industry.

OW & WHY DID YOU GET INTO THE DESIGN INDUSTRY? I’ve always been intrigued by form and shape and generally love all aspects of design, I believe it’s important for you to do something you are passionate about and that is why I do what I do  WHERE DID YOU STUDY? I studied Interior Architectural Design at The Design Centre in Greenside, Johannesburg. LOVED the course and definitely recommend this school as a great introduction to the design field.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE? Contemporary minimalistic. But as a designer, you need to learn to design for your clients - often creating spaces different to your tastes but with your personal touch.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A DESIGNER? I enjoy solving the puzzle which is very much what the architectural side is all about...life is filled with daily challenges but there is always a solution. I enjoy watching a project evolve - from a plan starting on paper and progressing to each room turning into a functional space... to the final stages of detailing and decorating. I love creating spaces and love decorative lights and wallpapers, adding textures and ambience to any space.

TOP TRENDS IN THE NEW YEAR? For 2020 there seems to be a strong connection with organic beauty. Natural materials like rattan, linen, jute, timber, concrete and organic forms have been long entrenched in interiors and it seems they will still be in coming years.

Glass lights are keeping a strong appearance in different forms and colours, smoked and amber. Lighting plays such an imperative role in finishing off a space, the correct size and positioning can make or break a space.

Kitchens design trends still display lots of beautiful stone, lots of exquisite veined marbles and natural concrete...beautifully paired with the warmth of subtle grain woods.

As designers it is important to keep up to date with the industry’s current trends and recent developments in terms of techniques, materials, and tools. I am sure most people have Pinterest and Instagram which are both amazing design inspiration tools.

DO YOU PREFER FUNCTIONALITY OR APPEAL? For design one absolutely has to have appeal but as designers we have to think of functionality as well... very difficult to choose between them as each are as important as the other....so best to keep both in mind!

If you are looking to be bold there is always the option of a luxe black kitchen. There is a move towards larger kitchens and with this, the luxury of double islands. The contemporary handle-less cabinets are still a big trend, creating a streamlined, simplistic look.

HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH INDUSTRY CHANGES? With technology these days it’s easy to stay in tune with design trends all over the world. Researching trends from Milan to New York, being able to see on trend products by designers of furniture, lighting, textiles and other home furnishings - we are very fortunate! We also have a large span of suppliers who regularly visit our team and keep us updated on all their new exciting products.
