Mark Your Calendars for the 2019 Winter Meeting

Finally, we get a break from all the craziness of this mid-term election year. The auction mailers we send out will now get looked at instead of blending in with the hundreds of political mailers that were bombarding everyone’s mailbox. The ballots have been counted and no matter who won, we will now get to see who lives up to their campaign promises and does what they said they would do. Well, time has flown by and we are facing the end of this year, with a new year right around the corner.

I hope that this has been a prosperous year and that you have moved your auction business forward in a positive direction. Hopefully, one of your new year’s resolutions will be to attend the OSAA Winter Meeting. We have worked hard to provide quality speakers and the topics discussed will be of benefit to you. The slate of speakers, information to be presented along with a preliminary schedule are included in this issue. A second track on Saturday for auction support staff will be held as well. I hope that you will take the time to invest in your business by attending our Winter Meeting. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Mr. Harb aka... the Auctioneer Insurance Guy, is the founder and CEO of IT Risk Managers, Inc. and the creator of the Auctioneer Insurance Program, designed by auctioneers, for auctioneers. He is a graduate of the Ohio Auction School and is a licensed Auctioneer in the State of Indiana. IT Risk Managers is one of the industry’s premier brokers of Database (Cyber) Insurance. IT Risk Managers is licensed in 48 states to market all types of Property and Casualty insurance products. Mr. Harb has over 30 years of experience in the financial services and insurance industries. During his career, he has also served as an instructor at Michigan State University and Illinois Institute of Technology. He is also an instructor of Auction Risk Management for the Kentucky Auction Academy, Continental Auctioneers School and the North Georgia School of Auctioneering. Mr. Harb holds a Masters of Management degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a Bachelors degree from Northern Illinois University.

LARRY HARB

Beth Rose is the 2016 Women’s International Auctioneer Champion and winner of the 2016 National Auction Marketing Campaign of the Year. She was the 2001 recipient of the Rose Award from CAI, the 2016 Florida State Auctioneer Champion and the 2009 Michigan Auctioneer Champion. Beth has served on the board for the Michigan Auctioneers Association and teaches real estate and marketing for the Ohio Auction School. She currently serves the NAA on the CAI committee and as an Educational Institute trustee. She conducts auctions in Ohio, Michigan and Florida. She is a second-generation auctioneer and is considered one of the top Realtors in her area. She has been conducting singlefamily and commercial real estate auctions for 30 years. She has won numerous awards in real estate and marketing. She has one daughter, Sara Rose, and three sisters, that are all auctioneers.

Beth is actively involved in her own non-profit organization called Blessings in Disguise, where she is the board president.

BETH ROSE

Mike Petty is an experienced marketing strategist, filmmaker and former US Army aviator with deep roots in Oklahoma. He has one goal. Use his experience and skill set to help small and medium size businesses make their marketing communications engaging, compelling and effective. He founded OKC Drone Photography and Video as a resource for helping businesses achieve that goal. He has conceived and managed the creation of award winning and effective marketing communications campaigns for national and global brands Including Johnson & Johnson, Gatorade, Anheuser Busch, NAPA Auto Parts, Microsoft and Owens Corning. As a writer, director, cameraman, drone pilot and editor, Mike’s proven brand marketing experience, creative credentials and sense of production values both on the ground and in aerial productions make him a unique resource in Central Oklahoma.

MICHAEL PETTY

Mike Brandly began his auction career in 1979. He is president of Brandly & Associates, Inc. and is an Auctioneer for RES Auction Services, a large real estate auction brokerage based in Ohio. Mr. Brandly’s appraisal company completes over 150 appraisals per year for Probate, Civil and Bankruptcy cases. He is a Former Director for the Ohio Auctioneers Association as well as a member of the Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan Auctioneer Associations. Mr. Brandly is Executive Director of The Ohio Auction School. His other teaching responsibilities include frequent Real Estate and Auctioneer CE classes all across the United States including post-licensure.

What Can You Do For St. Jude?

I just got back from my tenth visit to St. Jude Chidren’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Each year, the president of the NAA Board of Directors goes with Membership Manager Brandi McGrath Kong and our NAA IAC champions to Memphis. We purchase thousands of dollars of toys and then we “sell” them by auction to the children who are patients at St. Jude – patients and siblings alike! And we are doing this with funds provided to us by the members of the National Auctioneers Association. These are not the donations that are sent in and target-

ed for the hospital – this is part of our operating budget.

This year was particularly poignant for me. You see I am a grandmother of ten – and a great grandmother of one. And this year, I witnessed President Tim Mast explaining what we were doing to a family who could not speak English. Tim speaks Spanish and this family’s child was ill (obviously all of the patients at St. Jude are) and they were so excited to be able to attend an auction and receive a toy for their child. The father was clapping and hooting and taking photos. And it was because Tim had spoken to him in his own language!

Watching their interaction brought tears of joy to my eyes.

I can’t imagine having a child so sick that they must be taken to St. Jude, but I am so grateful that this place exists. Everything at St. Jude involves the child. They know they are sick and they are talked to about the treatment they will take and what will be happening to them. There are wagons that flood the hospital – many of which have been donated by NAA members through the IAC contest.

And what is even better is that they are a research hospital – and all of the research that is conducted

at St. Jude is open to other researchers and to physicians all over the world – at no cost. Their mission is to cure childhood cancer so that “No child should die in the dawn of life.”

Each year NAA members donate tens of thousands of dollars to St. Jude through Auction For Hope.

In fact, we have raised more than five million dollars over the course of our tenure with St. Jude.

Even if you are not a member of NAA, you too can join this challenge. Please don’t hesitate to go to http://stjude.org/naa . After all, as Winston Churchill said many years ago, “we make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

And if you are an NAA member – thanks for the privilege of allowing me to represent you at St. Jude.
