The 70th Annual NAA Conference & Show, in case you missed it, was amazing.

Director Oklahoma Auctioneers represented our Tony Wisely state well. With over 20 members present, we 580-336-9090 tony@benefitauctioneer.us were one of the top two states as far as attendance. Oklahoma was also represented well Executive Director in the International Auctioneer ChampionCali Crissup ship with seven members competing, and 580-327-7525 our own Morgan Hopson bringing home the okauctioneers@gmail.com IAC Women’s Division Championship. We are very proud of you Morgan!!! For the past two years, IAC has been good to Oklahoma with back to back titles. Oklahoma is one of very few states to have back to back titles, the last time being 1993-1994, with Tracy Sullivan and Greg Highsmith.

Hurricane Barry rushed some attendees out of New Orleans early, but the educational opportunities and networking were as good as ever, not to mention the seafood! I hope to see everyone at our Winter continued on page 2...

Calling All Past OSAA Pro Bid Calling Champions And Other Contest Changes

The OSAA would like to announce:

Every 5 years, the Oklahoma State Auctioneers Association will host a Best of the Best Contest! Any past OSAA Pro Bid Calling Champion will have the opportunity to compete in the Best of the Best held at our annual meeting.

Make plans now to attend: February 7-8, 2020!

A new contest division has been added to the lineup this coming February at our Winter Conference, and you are no longer left on the sidelines just because you have been a previous winner. It has been stated in these pages and often said by our Pro Division Champions that as much fun as it was to finally win the prize, there were mixed emotions and some sadness that they could no longer compete after they finally won. That all changes next February. The OSAA Board is inviting all past Pro Division Champions to bring their best game and capture the very first “Champion of Champions” title. The past champions will compete in this new division on Saturday evening following the pro division finals.

Do you have what it takes to claim the bragging rights? If you are a past state champion, we would love to have you at the conference and in the game. If you know a past state champion, give them a call and let them know, you would love to see them participating.

Many other changes were recommended by the Contest Committee and approved by the OSAA Board.

Starting this coming February, there will be NO ENTRY FEE to enter any of the contests. Just meet eligibility requirements, register for the conference and bring your items. Also, out of state members will be allowed to participate without the three year dues requirement. Again, simply be a member, register for the conference and bring your items. Each division winner will be awarded a buckle thanks to many new sponsors. Final details and registration forms will be available in the December Chant but it is not too early to start gathering your items and get ready. Be a part of this and other exciting events at the OSAA Winter Conference next February 7th & 8th. See you there!

Is the minimum bid really the minimum bid?

What does this sign say? It says the minimum speed is 40 miles per hour. So, what if you are going 37 miles per hour? Such would constitute a violation of this law.

What if an auctioneer says, “This property’s minimum bid is $550,000” and then it sells at auction for $520,000? The advertising said the minimum bid was $550,000 so conceivably someone willing to pay any less need not participate …

I believe it’s dangerous to advertise a minimum bid for any other amount than the actual minimum bid.

If the advertised minimum bid is less than the actual minimum bid (which we discussed here: https://mikebrandlyauctioneer.wordpress. com/2010/06/02/the-nominal-opening-bid/) that’s certainly problematic.

If the advertised minimum bid is higher than what the seller might accept — that’s dangerous as well.

The issue is false advertising in either case.

When the minimum bid (nominal opening bid) really isn’t, that’s likely fraudulent inducement; if the minimum bid is higher than it might be otherwise then a potential buyer who didn’t participate — willing to pay $530,000 in our prior example — has a case.

This is all about being fair, honest, ethical and forthright — if the advertised minimum bid is ‘X’ then it should be exactly that — ‘X’ and not “X – Y” nor “X + Y” nor any other number …

Further, from a marketing prospective if “X” is more (or close) to the property’s market value, it might be better left unpublished. In other words, publish good news and not bad news.

As you’re driving, and see the above sign — ask yourself: “Is the minimum speed actually 40 or is it 43, 37, 51, 26 or some other number?” It clearly says 40 so you should be thinking that’s the actual minimum (bid) speed, right?

A Letter From the President As I sat down to put pen to paper, I reflected back to several of my previous articles and a common thread seemed to emerge. I always mention how fast time goes by. From one article to the next, Winter Conference then Summer Conference, one auction, then the next, the whirlwind of life keeps increasing at a faster pace, bringing all of the ups and downs that life throws at you. If you are like me, too many times we focus on the problems and don’t celebrate the victories enough. Each of us, if we are honest with one another, have or will have problems in our lives and our business. This is not a surprise, we as auctioneers are “problem solvers”, we help clients each and everyday with their problems, counseling and advising our clients to help them through their situation. I think that at times we can do a lousy job of helping ourselves with our own problems and issues that we face in the auction industry. This is the “WHY” that we have speakers and education during our conferences. It allows for the opportunity to learn from others, to gain a different perspective, to develop a network of individuals that we can lean on in times of need. Most problems we face have many solutions and with the right network you can generally devise more than one way to solve the problem.

Often the problems that surround you aren’t nearly as crucial as the people around you. This is the great thing about being a part of our association, the people! Getting involved in our industry takes more than paying your dues, it requires you to actively take part, to show up

with an open mind and be willing to learn. Not everything that each speaker says will be life changing, but if you are open minded you will take something away that you can use and apply in your own business and or personal life. This summer conference was a prime example of what I am referring to. There were many great take-aways from each speaker.

The morning started out with two young men from a local church that brought great music and message that was inspiring and just a great way to start out a Sunday morning.

Cody Shelly gave tremendous insight into the life of a contract auctioneer, the glamorous side and not so glamorous side. The truthfulness and sincere way this world champion auctioneer shared his experiences was very much appreciated. Brad White spoke about financial planning for auctioneers. Having spent 14 years in the auction industry before changing careers into the financial planning sector allowed him to give valuable information to the auctioneers and support staff in attendance. Attorney Billy Shepherd provided valuable

information regarding legal documents, estates, estate planning and laws that affect auctioneers. I know that I took away several nuggets of information that will be of use. The final group that we heard from was a panel of our own group that answered questions from the moderator, our own Barrett Bray. The panel consisted of current IAC Champion Morgan Hopson, WAAC Champion Cody Shelley, Oklahoma Rookie Champion Cade Richeson, Oklahoma Champion Tony Wisely, and IAC Competitor Zach Vierheller. Various topics were discussed pertaining to auction competitions, bid calling practice and public speaking. Overall it was another great time of fellowship, learning, and just plain old fun!

It is my sincere wish that all of you will make it a priority to attend our winter conference this next year; it will definitely be worth the effort.

Time really is moving fast and winter conference will be here before we know it.

Auctioneers & Branding Fundamentals Over the last year, I’ve had what seems like a hundred conversations with auctioneers on the topic of branding. The funny thing is that no two conversations have been anything alike. That is the thing about branding…it is a topic that is so big, it can seem difficult to define, understand or even categorize effectively. Too often, we only half process the concepts of a brand while never fully embracing the complexity of benefits that a strong brand can offer. In an attempt to help clarify and simplify the topic, I’ve taken to separating the idea of a brand into 3 points: Brand Elements, Brand Image, and Brand Development.

Brand Elements- Brand Elements consist of the physical representation of our brand. Business names, logo and mark designs, choice of brand colors, fonts, slogans, themes, etc. are some elements that represent our brands and create recognition and memorability of our businesses. Brand Image- Our Brand Image is the emotional connection we create with our target customers and clients. It is defined how they feel about and relate to us, how they perceive our products and services, and how well we produce on our promises. Our Brand Image is an evolving piece of the brand puzzle that requires constant diligence and oversight to ensure positive cognizance. This is achieved through…

Brand Development- Brand Development can be described as the continuing process of shaping and sharpening what we want our brands to represent. Brand Development requires personal research, data collection, plans of action, marketing execution, and effectiveness measurement on a repeating cycle. This is the action point of a brand and is typically referred to appropriately as simply “branding”.

These 3 categories by no means

fully encompass the full concept of a brand, but I hope that they lend a little insight into a topic that I’ve wrestled with for a long time. Of course, the most important aspect to recognize in any brand is consistency. When all of the tiny, related pieces of our brand come together to speak with a constant, unchanging voice, we begin to experience the benefits that a strong brand has to offer for faster business growth, stronger market recognition, and deeper customer and client relationships.

Hopson Named IAC Women’s Division Champion

NEW ORLEANS – Morgan Hopson, of Bonham, Texas, was recently named champion of the National Auctioneers Association’s 2019 International Auctioneer Championship (IAC) at the 70th annual NAA Conference & Show.

The National Auctioneers Association estimates that only 17% of auctioneers nationwide are women. The 30-year-old, firstgeneration auctioneer, Hopson, was recently named the 2019 Texas State Champion Auctioneer as well.

“It was my privilege to share the stage with 68 competitors, in the men’s and women’s divisions, from the United States, Canada, Mexico and Ireland, who are some of the best and brightest auctioneers in our industry,” Hopson said. “I am extremely honored and very humbled to have been named the NAA’s 2019 Women’s International Auctioneer Champion and look forward to serving as an ambassador for our industry.”

Twenty-two women competed for the honor to be known as one

of the best auction professionals in the world. Hopson, Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI), received a $5,000 cash award, trophy and championship ring. Seven judges scored contestants on poise, command and bid calling ability in a preliminary bid-calling round, an interview round with three industry questions, and a final round of bid-calling for the top seven competitors. The competition is held in a single day in front of live attendees with tens of thousands of viewers on IAC Live! via Facebook and YouTube.

Hopson will represent the NAA and the entire auction industry throughout this year with her cochampion from the men’s division, Trey Morris of Murray, Ky. Both will serve as ambassadors for the NAA by speaking to other trade groups, professional associations and national and international media outlets about the power of the auction method of marketing and the professionalism of members of the NAA. One of the highlights of the year, for the champions, will be a special trip to conduct the annual NAA Toy Auction for patients and their siblings at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The NAA formed its partnership with St. Jude in 1995. To date, it has raised more than $5.5 million in support of St. Jude to help advance cures and means of prevention for catastrophic pediatric diseases through research and treatment.

Hopson is an auction profes-

sional and real estate associate, licensed in both Texas and Oklahoma, with United Country Buford Resources Real Estate & Auction specializing in selling farm and ranch land, hunting properties and luxury real estate at auction.

Hopson also specializes in consulting with nonprofits and associations to help them meet their fundraising goals through live auction and special appeals. She travels throughout Texas, Oklahoma and the Midwest conducting benefit auctions and works with organizations such as the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Living for Zachary, Community Bankers Association of Oklahoma and the Independent Bankers Association of Texas. Outside of the auction industry, Hopson is passionate about giving back to the community and is currently serving in a leadership role for her Junior League chapter.

Hopson attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration as well as a Bachelor of Arts. “My business and music background serves me well as an auction professional. As an auctioneer, we are often entrusted with our client’s most treasured asset, whether that is real estate or their biggest fundraising opportunity of the year. Having problemsolving skills, being able to listen to our clients’ goals and needs, and bringing a professional presence to the stage while evoking emotion from our audience is key,” Hopson said.
