Publishing Note

This edition of the Caribbean District Magazine was developed during a period of active service, recovery, and reflection following Hurricane Melissa. While circumstances required flexibility in timelines and production, the priority remained clear: to document the work undertaken, honour the people involved, and capture the lessons shaping our District at this moment.

The stories featured in this issue represent a cross-section of initiatives completed and documented within the available timeframe. Additional projects and contributions from other clubs and zones will be highlighted in the Next edition, as the District continues to showcase the full breadth of service taking place across our communities.

This issue reflects the collective efforts of Optimists across the Caribbean who responded with compassion, resilience, and integrity. It stands as both a record of service and a reminder that leadership continues even under strain.

Rebuilding after the storm has reminded us that none of us serves alone. Our greatest impact has come where

competition, where unity silenced negativity, and where respect guided

My Fellow Optimists, The past few months have tested us in ways none of us anticipated. Hurricane Melissa left visible scars across our communities and invisible ones within our hearts. Homes were damaged, livelihoods disrupted, routines shattered, and yet, in the midst of loss, something remarkable emerged: the unmistakable strength of the Optimist spirit.

Resilience is not simply the ability to endure hardship; it is the courage to rise, to rebuild, and to recommit to purpose even when circumstances are difficult.

Across our Caribbean District, I have witnessed clubs mobilizing without hesitation, zones collaborating across traditional boundaries, and members giving generously, not only of resources, but of time, compassion, and presence.

This is optimism in action.

The Optimist Creed calls us to be so strong that nothing can disturb our peace of mind; to talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person we meet; and to look at the sunny side of everything while making our optimism come true.

These are not merely words recited at meetings, they are daily practices, especially in times of strain. Let us be mindful that how we speak to one another, how we disagree, and how we resolve challenges matters just as much as the service we deliver.

I encourage every member and every club to continue undertaking the work of optimism with renewed purpose, but to do so together, without division, without gossip, and without negativity. Differences of opinion will arise, but they must never erode respect. Leadership is not about control; it is about influence rooted in trust, empathy, and shared vision.

As we move forward, let us recommit to serving with excellence, leading with compassion, and engaging every voice, especially those who may feel weary after a difficult season. The children, families, and communities we serve are watching us. They draw hope not only from what we give, but from how we give.

Fellow Optimists, the storm did not define us, our response did. And that response has been one of courage, generosity, and unwavering belief in a better tomorrow. Let us continue to rebuild with optimism, grounded in our values, strengthened by collaboration, and united in purpose.

TRAUMA & HEALING Supporting Recovery Beyond What Can Be Seen Extreme weather events do not end when skies clear. Long after physical damage is addressed, many individuals continue to carry emotional strain, disrupted sleep, heightened fear, and a diminished sense of security. These experiences are especially pronounced among children, caregivers, educators, and community leaders who are often expected to remain strong for others while quietly managing their own distress.

This section focuses on the emotional aftermath of disaster and the importance of intentional, informed responses that promote psychological well-being. It brings together professional insight, practical guidance for families, leadership reflection, and lived experiences that illustrate how care, consistency, and understanding contribute to recovery. ithin these pages, readers will find perspectives that explain how stress affects behaviour, why patience and predictability matter, and how everyday actions can help restore emotional balance. The stories and reflections included here affirm that recovery is not uniform and that progress often unfolds gradually.

For Optimists, service extends beyond meeting immediate needs. It includes creating environments where individuals feel supported, respected, and understood. By recognising emotional responses as part of the recovery process, we strengthen our ability to serve responsibly and with compassion.

“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what happens inside us as a result of what happens to us.”

— Dr. Earl G. Wright In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, much attention has rightly been given to rebuilding homes, restoring infrastructure, and meeting immediate material needs. Yet, as Dr. Earl G. Wright reminded Optimists across the Caribbean, some of the most serious injuries left behind by disasters are the ones we cannot see.

In a compelling and deeply informative presentation, Dr. Wright—psychiatrist and mental-health advocate—guided members of the Optimist International Caribbean District in a session dubbed “Leading with Optimism: Finding Hope and Purpose After the Storm” through the hidden neurological and emotional impacts of trauma, particularly on children, and outlined practical, community-based strategies for healing.

His presentation shifted the conversation from disaster response alone to meaningful emotional care, equipping Optimists with tools to support individuals, families, and communities long after the storm has passed.

Trauma: More Than What the Eye Can See Dr. Wright began drew clear distinction between visible physical injuries and invisible injuries to the brain.

While cuts, bruises, and fractures can be observed and treated immediately, trauma alters the brain in ways that are often misunderstood or overlooked.

Following a traumatic event, whether a hurricane or another crisis, the brain’s stress-response system can remain activated long after danger has passed.

Elevated stress hormones— adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol—can reshape neural pathways, disrupting: • memory • sleep • emotional regulation • behaviour

Key Insights and Takeaways from Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Earl J. Wright Without appropriate support, these effects may persist for months or even years. ________________________________________ One of the most striking messages from Dr. Wright’s presentation was this:

The body may continue to react as though the hurricane is still happening.

In post-trauma states, individuals, especially children, may experience: Jumpiness when rain, wind, thunder, or darkness returns

Panic attacks and heightened fearfulness

Insomnia and disrupted sleep

Difficulty settling or calming down

Angry or emotional outbursts

Sensory overwhelm

Additional effects may include: • anxiety disorders • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) • difficulty concentrating • hypervigilance • difficulty trusting others • avoidance of reminders linked to the traumatic event

Crucially, Dr. Wright emphasized that these reactions are not signs of weakness or misbehaviour. They are the brain’s instinctive attempt to stay safe.

Children: A Critical Area of Concern

For the Caribbean District, whose mission centres on children, Dr. Wright’s insights regarding young people were especially sobering and instructive.

In children affected by Hurricane Melissa, particularly those aged 0–10 years, trauma can leave the nervous system easily triggered, affecting: • school performance • behaviour at home and in the classroom • sleep patterns • emotional control

Because children often lack the language to articulate distress, trauma may present as withdrawal, aggression, clinginess, regression, or academic difficulty. Reintroducing structure can help restore balance and reassurance.

Taking Care Of Your Children After A Hurricane This is a guide for parents and guardians.

Hurricanes can be frightening, and children cannot control their fear and anxiety as easily as adults.

Children may feel very scared during hurricanes. Loud winds, darkness, thunder and shaking buildings can overwhelm them.

Not knowing what will happen next increases their fear. Children may have trouble sleeping, want to stay close to an adult ,cry more easily, feel upset or confused and have difficulty managing emotions.

These feelings are normal after a storm

TIPS FOR HELPING CHILDREN AND TEENS DURING AND AFTER A DISASTER ● Keep them safe, Keep them close to trusted adults. ● Listen to and talk with your children. Let them talk about

what is happening around them. Let them know that it is okay to be scared.

● Restart routines. Eat together and keep regular bedtimes. This will help them feel secure.

● Keep family time. Allow for healthy activities. Allow them to play, colour, talk with friends and have fun. Allow them some choices.

● Keep scary news about the disaster away from them.

Turn off the news and social media showing the disaster.

● Answer their questions honestly. Give short answers that

they can understand. Do not give them more information than they need.

● Take care of yourself. It is important that they know you are okay. Your calm helps them to stay calm also.

● Offer extra comfort. Hug them more. Offer kind words that will make them feel supported.

In Remembrance of Annesha Taylor A Life, A Lesson, A Call to Compassion In the wake of the Childhood Health and Response Mission (CHaRM) Committee webinar on “HIV/AIDS and Mental Wellness amid Loss and Grief,” and as part of the District’s Flagship HIV/AIDS Awareness Project, we re�lect on the life of Annesha Taylor—a Jamaican woman whose journey compels us to confront the full human impact of HIV, including the emotional, psychological, and social burdens that too o�ten go unseen.

Across the Caribbean, HIV remains a significant public-health and social challenge. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) our region has the second-highest HIV prevalence globally, with an estimated 330,000 people living with HIV. Women and girls account for more than half of new infections, and young women ages 15–24 are nearly twice as likely to be infected as their male peers. These are not abstract statistics, they represent real lives, real families, and real stories. Annesha Taylor was one of those stories.

Annesha's Story Diagnosed with HIV as a teenager, Annesha later made the courageous decision to live openly with her status. She became one of face of national HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns in Jamaica at a time when stigma and fear were widespread. Her image appeared on posters and billboards, challenging the public to see the humanity behind the diagnosis. Through her visibility, she gave others permission to speak, to seek care, and to believe that life with HIV could still hold meaning and dignity But Annesha’s story also reveals the painful truth we must confront honestly, awareness does not always equal acceptance. Despite her role as an advocate, she experienced judgment, exclusion, and stigma, including being removed from public campaigns when she became pregnant. Her lived experience re�lected what studies continue to show today: more than 40% of people living with HIV report mental-health impacts linked to fear, isolation, or rejection, and individuals living with HIV are two to three times more likely to experience depression or anxiety, particularly in the context of grief, trauma, and loss (https://www.unaids.org/sites/default/files/media_asset/20181203_UNAIDS_PCB43_BN_thematic-segment-m ental-health-and-HIV_EN.pdf)

In Remembrance of Annesha Taylor A Life, A Lesson, A Call to Compassion Annesha lived at the intersection of HIV, mental wellness, and grief—grieving lost opportunities, fractured relationships, and the weight of public scrutiny, while also navigating motherhood, illness, and survival. Her journey reminds us that HIV is not only a clinical condition; it is a deeply human experience that a�fects children, partners, caregivers, families, and entire communities.

Annesha passed away in April 2015 from complications related to HIV/AIDS. Yet even in her death, her story continues to speak—calling us to respond di�ferently, more thoughtfully, and more compassionately.

As Optimists, committed to “Be the Change… United We Lead,” we are reminded through Annesha’s life why our response to HIV must be rooted in: • accurate information, • trauma-informed and respectful language, • empathy over judgment, and • action over silence.

Over the three hours we spent in the town, we did not see a single child. For a community anchored by a primary school serving over 900 students, the silence was haunting. It spoke of displacement, disruption, and lives

We were met by the school’s principal, Ms White, a woman of extraordinary grace, compassion, and quiet strength.

District’s hurricane relief mission to Trelawny and my visit to Long Bay, District JOI Chairperson Notoya Williams and I continued our outreach efforts—this time through collaboration with Members of the Jamaica Teacher's Association East Kingston District Association (JTAEKDA). The mission was to deliver cleaning supplies and essential items to Black River Primary School in St. Elizabeth.

Additional supplies were sourced, and I was joined by my friend, David Dawkins. None of us were prepared for what awaited us on December 7th, 2025.

When Light Became t h e G r e a t e s t G i f t (Cont'd) Governor’s Reflection Hurricane Melissa changed the rhythm of our District year. It redirected our plans, reshaped our priorities, and reminded us that service is not always strategic—it is often deeply personal.

Standing in Black River, listening to a principal who had lost so much yet spoke only of her students, reinforced a truth I carry with me: optimism is not about ignoring hardship. It is about responding to it with courage, compassion, and presence.

May we never lose sight of the power of showing up—for communities, for educators, and for one another.

When we returned to Black River Primary School and surprised Ms White, her reaction needed no explanation. She smiled broadly, laughed freely, and for a moment seemed unsure of what to do with herself. It was joy in its purest form, not simply because of what was given, but because she was seen,

remembered, and valued.

As we listened, it became evident that leadership in moments of crisis is not loud. It is steady. It is selfless.

It is rooted in service.

A Reflection on Service and Recovery

When gently asked about her personal needs, Miss White paused before offering a single response: “Light.”

She wanted something—anything—that could give her light at home.

That one word stayed with us long after we left Black River.

By the time we departed, we were changed. What we had seen—the devastation, the resilience, the dignity in hardship, left a lasting imprint on our hearts.

Without ceremony or fanfare, we made a quiet commitment: we would return. Not with assessments or reports, but with Christmas cheer, gratitude, and light.

This moment was one small chapter in the Optimist to

In a season where so many have lost so much, this experience reminded us that optimism is not an abstract idea. It lives in action. In presence. In choosing to care, even when our own hearts are heavy.

This is what it means to Be the Change.

The Sunflower Spirit: Leading with Optimism After the Storm

By Rose Medley, International Vice President, Southeast Region, Optimist International (2025–2026) In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, we gathered as Optimists not in celebration, but in shared humanity—acknowledging loss, disruption, and grief, while affirming our shared responsibility to lead with hope and purpose. It was my honour, as International Vice President of Optimist International, to join the Optimist International Caribbean District for the session “Leading with Optimism: Finding Hope and Purpose After the Storm,” led by District Governor Lorna Gay Gooden and facilitated by Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Earl J. Wright It was not merely a meeting. It was not in a celebratory spirit, but in a spirit of shared humanity and collective strength, in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane Melissa.

The Sunflower Spirit My reflections were anchored in what I call the Sunflower Spirit, guided by the theme: Change.

Collaborate.

Rejuvenate.

The sunflower is a Sunflower a sturdy plant known for its large, bright flower head, with vibrant yellow or red/orange florets, that turns to follow the sun as the day progresses. The Sunflower Spirit embodies loyalty, resilience, strength, growth, joy, and warmth or compassion..

Across the Jamaican communities, the impact of Hurricane Melissa has been uneven but deeply felt. Some have suffered the loss of loved ones, homes, businesses, and a sense of normalcy.

Others have been unscathed in terms of material loss.

Our hearts ache for the destruction we have witnessed, the lives forever changed, and the profound sadness that lingers in our communities. To all, I affirm this: Optimist International stands with the District in solidarity, compassion, and resolve.

The Sunflower Spirit: Leading with Optimism After the Storm

By Rose Medley, International Vice President, Southeast Region, Optimist International (2025–2026) The session, 'Leading with Optimism: Finding Hope and Purpose after the Storm,' asked us to look beyond the immediate devastation and tap into the incredible resilience that defines our spirit. Optimism in this context is not about ignoring the pain; it is about choosing to believe that the future can be better than the present, and that we have a role in making it so. It is about finding strength even when things seem bleak.

In that pursuit, I offer a framework for our path forward, one centred on three key pillars: Change, Collaborate, and Rejuvenate.

Change: Embracing a New Reality The hurricane brought about an undeniable, and often brutal, change to our landscape and our lives. Our processes, our infrastructure, and our daily routines have been irrevocably altered. We must first acknowledge this reality.

Change is our present reality. Instead of resisting it, we must embrace the necessary changes in how we operate, how we prepare for future challenges, and how we deliver services to those in need.

Collaborate: Rebuilding Together No individual, club, or organization can recover alone from a disaster of this magnitude. Recovery demands collective action.

We have seen incredible examples of colleagues helping one another while safeguarding their own families. Our District initiative and individual Club Outreach and Fundraisers are examples. We must foster and deepen these bonds. These efforts underscore a vital truth: true recovery is only possible when we work together— through seamless collaboration with our national and regional authorities, partners, and each other.

OPTIMISM IN ACTION Service That Moves from Intention to Impact Optimism finds its truest expression when values are translated into purposeful action. Across the Caribbean District, moments of challenge have consistently been met with resolve, creativity, and a willingness to serve where the need is greatest. This section highlights how Optimists transformed concern into commitment and compassion into tangible outcomes.

The stories that follow capture service in motion, clubs mobilising resources, leaders collaborating across zones, partners extending generosity, and volunteers showing up with consistency and care. Each initiative reflects the understanding that meaningful change is rarely the work of one individual or one club, but the result of shared effort and collective responsibility.

Here, action is not measured solely by quantities distributed or miles travelled, but by the dignity preserved, the reassurance offered, and the hope restored in communities navigating uncertainty. These projects demonstrate how service adapts to context, responds to real needs, and remains grounded in respect for those being served.

Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea Extends Care to Mothers and Babies Affected by Hurricane Melissa As part of the Optimist International Caribbean District’s continuing response to the impact of Hurricane Melissa, the Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea (SOCOL) undertook a targeted humanitarian initiative focused on one of the most vulnerable groups affected by the disaster, expectant and new mothers.

On Saturday, December 20, members of SOCOL donated a wide range of essential care items to Victoria Jubilee Hospital, Jamaica’s premier maternity hospital. The initiative specifically sought to support mothers from western Jamaica who were impacted

by Hurricane Melissa and who found themselves in need of comfort, dignity, and practical assistance during an already sensitive time.

Supporting Mothers and Newborns with Dignity and Care The donation included thoughtfully assembled items for both mothers and babies, reflecting the Club’s commitment to meeting immediate, practical needs with compassion.

Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea Extends Care to Mothers and Babies Affected by Hurricane Melissa - Cont'd A Need Identified, Delivered

This initiative was sparked by a SOCOL Club member who maintained contact with Victoria Jubilee Hospital and became aware of the ongoing needs of expectant mothers affected by the hurricane. Following engagement with the hospital, including contact with the Acting Chief Executive Officer, arrangements were made for the donation to be received and distributed through the hospital’s administrative processes.

The items were formally received by Sister Edwards-Henry on behalf of the hospital’s administrative staff. She expressed sincere gratitude for the donation and emphasized that the need for support remains ongoing. She further affirmed that the contribution would make a meaningful difference to both mothers and babies receiving care at the institution.

Living the Optimist Promise Through this initiative, the Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea once again demonstrated the essence of Optimism in action, responding swiftly to community needs, collaborating responsibly with institutional partners, and placing people at the heart of service. The impact of the donation lies in its timely response, sensitivity, and focus on dignity at a critical moment in the lives of those affected.

Christmas Hurricane Relief Care Package Drive, A Two-Phase Humanitarian Project Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community The Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community demonstrated the true spirit of Optimism through its Christmas Hurricane Relief Care Package Drive, a two-phase humanitarian project aimed at supporting Deaf individuals and families who were gravely impacted by the passage of Hurricane Melissa in late October 2025.

Understanding that Deaf persons are often disproportionately affected due to communication barriers and limited access to relief, The Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community designed an inclusive outreach initiative with the distribution of 150 hurricane-relief packages, combining disaster response with holiday goodwill and a deliberate focus on reaching underserved and hard-to-access individuals to ensure that no one was left behind.

Tuesday, December 23, 2025 The first phase of the project was conducted on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, with a drive-through distribution of 100 relief packages to deaf persons from communities in and around Black River, St. Elizabeth, and Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.

Volunteers distributed carefully prepared hurricane-relief care packages containing essential food supplies to Deaf persons and families in need, prioritizing those most affected by hurricane-related disruptions.

This early Christmas initiative provided timely relief ahead of the holiday season, helping to restore comfort and stability to families recovering from hurricane damage and loss.

Christmas Hurricane Relief Care Package Drive, A Two-Phase Humanitarian Project Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community Phase Two: Continued Outreach Post-Christmas Distribution Saturday, December 27, 2025 In response to ongoing needs, The Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community launched a second round of distribution of 50 relief packages on Saturday, December 27, 2025. This phase covered the communities of Browns Town, St. Ann, using St. Christopher’s School for the Deaf as the drop-off location. This school is one of the key institutions serving Deaf children in St. Ann and other bordering parishes in the northern region of the island.

The second round reinforced the Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community’s commitment to sustained service and ensured that relief efforts reached both community members and educational institutions serving Deaf youth.

Partnerships and Support The success of the Christmas Hurricane Relief Care Package Drive became a reality through the valued partnership of Off-The-Grid Missions, whose provision of much-needed food supplies made the care packages possible. The Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community acknowledges the contribution of Past Governor, Al Johnson of The Optimist Club of West St Andrew, who provides ongoing technical support to the Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community. He sponsored the transportation of the team and packages from Kingston to St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and Brown’s Town. The Optimist Club of Jamaica Deaf Community also acknowledges the dedication of its members, volunteers, and other supporters, who gave their time, effort, and other resources to make the project a success.

It highlighted the importance of accessible disaster response while embodying the Optimist mission of bringing out the best in communities through service, especially among those who are too often overlooked during times of crisis. This response reflects how the recipients in all three parishes felt, “...the packages are well received, and we deeply appreciate your support…” especially in Brown’s Town, where the Deaf adults were receiving hurricane-relief support for the first time.

Miles of Cheer, Gifts of Hope: A Christmas Eve Journey of Compassion Through Collaboration This Christmas Eve outreach was defined not only by distance travelled, but by the collective spirit of service that made every delivery possible. It was a demonstration of what can be achieved when clubs, partners, families, and community organizations come together in unity and purpose.

The journey began in Old Harbour, with collection stops in Linstead and Ewarton, undertaken in collaboration with President Elaine and Lieutenant Governor Merlyn. These early stops reflected the coordinated effort behind the initiative, as items contributed by multiple partners were assembled for distribution.

The first Christmas delivery took place in Discovery Bay, where clothing was distributed—gifts that offered warmth, dignity, and reassurance during the holiday season.

Inter-Zone Collaboration Brings Hope to Children on Christmas Day Christmas Day became more than a celebration this year—it became a powerful expression of unity, service, inter-club and inter-zone collaboration within the Optimist International Caribbean District. As communities continued to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Melissa, Optimists from multiple clubs and zones came together to ensure that children most affected by the storm experienced hope, dignity, and joy during the Christmas season.

The initiative was born out of conversations following the District’s hurricane relief mission to Falmouth, Trelawny, located in Zone 7, the zone hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa.

Recognising the deep and lasting impact on children, discussions between President Elaine Creary and Past Chairperson Natanish Hines quickly evolved into a plan of action, one that would extend beyond immediate disaster response to address emotional recovery and well-being.

Inter-Zone Collaboration Brings Hope to Children on Christmas Day What followed was a meaningful example

inter-club

inter-zone cooperation, particularly between Zones 5 and 7. While Zone 7 bore the brunt of the hurricane’s impact, Optimists from Zone 5 mobilised in support, reinforcing the District’s commitment that no zone would stand alone in recovery.

Working closely with 4-H Club leaders in the affected communities, children who were most severely impacted by the hurricane were carefully

identified.

Their presence and support underscored the strength of inter-zone partnership, Zone 5 standing in solidarity with Zone 7 during one of its most challenging periods.

The Optimists were warmly hosted

by LtG Merlyn’s Church Sister, who treated the team to curried goat and bread at her family’s restaurant, generously opening its doors to serve the relief team, even though the establishment was not yet officially open to the public.

This Christmas Day initiative serves as a powerful reminder that Optimism thrives when boundaries between clubs and zones dissolve in the face of need. Optimist Club of Barbican Pines and Florida Partners Bring Hope and Homes to Garlands, St. James COptimist Club of Barbican Pines' Partnership with Kerlyn Brown and Friends Relief Mission attracts Florida Families local support effort.

This powerful humanitarian partnership with the Bryce, Simmons and McCallum families from Florida, USA on Sunday, December 28, 2025, embarked on a major relief mission to the rural Community of Garlands, St. James, bringing urgent assistance and long-term hope to affected families.

The mission speareheaded by Couple Shirley and Dean Bryce, the Simmons and McCallum families, sourced a wide range of critical supplies, including building materials, generators, tents, clothing, school supplies, and food items.

These donations, distributed directly to the residents, continue to demonstrate the will of our Country to rebuild after this devastating hurricane.

In addition to immediate relief, this partnership has committed to an ambitious reconstruction initiative aimed at building at least five new houses for families whose homes were destroyed or severely damaged. This effort reflects the shared dedication of all partners to restore stability, dignity, and resilience.

1st QUARTER REPORT Isiah Allen, JOI Governor

Junior Optimists In Action Youth Engagement Highlights

It is my pleasure to report that the JOI Caribbean District’s Quarter 1 has been one full of success, growth and unity. It reminded us not only of our duties as leaders, but of the reason behind why we serve.

Laying the Foundation: A Strong Start for JOI Caribbean Built on Service and Optimism

This sentiment, through unfortunate circumstances, was demonstrated by the JOI District’s quick call to action implementing the Jamaican Relief Fundraiser in support of the Black River Hospital. In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, our JOI family in Jamaica incurred significant socioeconomic and psychological challenges and this project aimed to lift some of these challenges.

United by purpose, we sold baked goods including donuts, brownies and cinnamon rolls raising an astounding US$600.

In moments like these, we were reminded of the words of the Optimist Creed, “to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.” Our JOI family must be commended, in the face of hardship, our members chose hope, resilience and service illustrating that Optimism is not just a concept, but a movement.

JOI District Governor's Report

Junior Optimists In Action Another significant district achievement was our first JOI Training Seminar, where newly inducted JOI Leaders were equipped with the necessary skills and tools to serve effectively. With the assistance of our keynote speaker, Dr. Petrea Facey, our leaders gained valuable insight on how to apply these skills meaningfully within their clubs and communities, embodying what it means to be an effective leader. This seminar reinforced the standard of excellence expected of every JOI Leader all while preparing future leaders for their roles.

To complete quarter 1, the JOI Giving Tree Initiative was undertaken aiming to ensure that less fortunate children in the community could experience the joy of receiving gifts on Christmas morning. JOI Caribbean District successfully distributed 67 gifts, 50 to children in the Cayman Islands and 17 to the boys of Matthew 25:40 in Jamaica.

Overall, I am so proud of what our district has accomplished within this quarter alone! Stepping into my role only a few months ago, I was nervous yet excited at the endless possibilities of what our JOI family could do when united. Seeing it happen firsthand has reinforced that we are capable of creating real, lasting impact when we choose optimism, service and unity, this quarter has laid a strong foundation and this is only the beginning!

Flagship Project.

A yearlong emphasis will be placed on strengthening HIV and AIDS awareness across the District. The committee will drive this effort by coordinating District-wide initiatives and establishing a cadre of trained resource persons available to clubs for school-based youth presentations Our target impact is approximately 6,000 youths across the District.

The committee will finalize the programme details at our next meeting and present a comprehensive proposal thereafter.

Celebrating Community is a global initiative that unites four of the world’s leading volunteer service organizations, Optimist International, Kiwanis International, Lions International, and Rotary International, in a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve when we serve together. Rooted in our shared commitment to fellowship, volunteerism, and meaningful community impact, this initiative calls on clubs across the Caribbean District to stand shoulder to shoulder in service and wiill see events scheduled during the second week of September, Through collective action, we celebrate the true spirit of community—showing that when we combine our strengths and resources, we amplify our reach and deepen our impact. Together, these four service organizations focus on meeting urgent and long-term needs within local communities, addressing challenges in ways that create lasting, life-changing benefits for children, families, and neighbourhoods.

Last year’s initiative had two core components: • Feeding the Children – ensuring that vulnerable children receive essential nutrition.

• International Coastal Cleanup Day – protecting our environment and safeguarding the future of our islands.

Feed the Children Volunteers from the four service organization executed a one day feeding for children and their families in the Casava Piece community. Over 150 food packages were distributed to children and their families in the community. The packages predominantly included breakfast items that were put together by the four service clubs with the kind support of corporate Jamaica. Sponsors included Lasco, Wisynco, Jambisco, Mothers, Cari-Med Group and Constant Spring Primary & Junior High.

International Coastal Clean Up Day Coinciding with International Coastal Cleanup Day volunteers gathered at the Elshire Beach, Portmore, Jamiaca, to play their part in cleaning up Jamaica’s coastline. Tons of plastic and debris was collected from the beach and the initiative encouraged residents to adopt more sustainable waste disposal practices while building awareness about Marine conservation.

Conclusion This initiative highlights the remarkable power of collaboration among service clubs and is dedicated to building communities that are stronger, healthier, safer, and more compassionate. Through united service—whether feeding children, restoring dignity to families, or cleaning and protecting our coastlines, Optimists, Kiwanians, Lions, and Rotarians Celebrate Community by standing together in purposeful action. In partnership, we serve humanity with greater reach, deeper impact, and a shared commitment to creating lasting change.

This year, for this initative to be truly transformative, we need participation from Optimist Club across District. When each club contributes, the collective impact becomes undeniable. United in purpose, we can demonstrate the extraordinary power of service—and show the Caribbean what happens when Optimists lead with heart, hope, and action.

OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL YOUTH C O N T E ST S ORATORICAL CONTEST Beginning in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International.

The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple college scholarships with a pre-assigned topic.

This contest offers an opportunity for students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing to present their thoughts in the community, gaining skills, which can only come from signing or speaking to a large audience. Patterned after the Optimist Oratorical Contest, the contest offers youth the chance to compete in speech or sign language with the chance to win a college scholarship.

One District Scholarship of $2,500

KIDS SPEAK OUT! SPEECH CONTEST All young people can compete in the Optimist Oratorical Contest. The “Kids Speak Out” contest is a “pre-Oratorical” program that provides a more equitable competition for younger speakers.
