Step 'Into the Woods' at Teatru Manoel This May
‘Into the Woods’ runs for two weekends between the 9th and the 18th May at Teatru Manoel, with various starting times including morning and matinee shows.
This May, step into the magical and twisted world of your favourite Brothers Grimm fairy tales, in an exciting production of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical; ‘Into the Woods’. The Teatru Manoel stage will transform into a fairy tale forest in this production of ‘Into the Woods’ directed by Lucienne Camilleri, with musical direction by Ryan Paul Abela and production design by Matthew Cassar.
‘Into the Woods’ is a 1987 multiple-award winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. This production of ‘Into the Woods’ boasts a formidable cast, with Dorothy Bezzina as the witch, Joel Parnis as the baker, Rachel Fabri as the baker’s wife, Thomas Camilleri and Ryan Grech as the Princes, Gianluca Cilia as Jack, Nadia Vella as Cinderella, and Stephen Oliver as the narrator, amongst many other talented performers.
“I was introduced to Sondheim a number of years ago when my son travelled to the UK to pursue his studies in musical theatre and drew me into this wonderful world that is Sondheim, an incredible playwright who puts extraordinary music to text,” director Lucienne Camilleri said. “Into the Woods is no exception, and in this musical we are propelled into an etude of the human psyche and its obsessive desire to want what seems unattainable only to find that we didn’t really desire it after all. True to life, we are drawn
to make impulsive decisions that don’t always turn out for the best. But in making mistakes we discover different strengths. We all desire fairy tale lives but when push comes to shove, those very fairy tales can fling us into the deepest abyss of deceit and uncertainty. Sondheim then poses the question - is there a way out?”
Designing the production is Matthew Cassar, who is working on the set, costumes, and some other surprises. “Into The Woods’ rich blend of classic fairy tales makes for an incredibly exciting creative challenge,” he told us. “What I love most is the opportunity to play with
these familiar stories while giving them an unexpected twist. For this production, we aimed to infuse a darker, more atmospheric feel while incorporating striking pops of color to create a visually captivating experience. We’re confident that the result will be a true feast for the eyes!” The run-time is roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes including an interval.

Museum of Illusions Malta Opens in St Julian’s
Discover Malta’s newest mind-bending experience at the Museum of Illusions in St. Julian’s. From holograms to upside-down rooms, this interactive museum will challenge everything you think you know about perception and reality.
Located in the heart of St Julian’s, within the historical Mercury House, the Museum of Illusions Malta has officially opened its doors, offering a mind-bending experience unlike any other on the island. This exciting new attraction invites guests of all ages to dive headfirst into a world where perception is play and reality is never quite what it seems.
As visitors step inside, they're immediately welcomed into a realm of visual trickery, sensory challenges, and scientific wonder. Far from a traditional museum, the Museum of Illusions is designed to engage not just the eyes, but the mind. Every exhibit is interactive, every corner full of surprise, and each illusion crafted to twist your sense of reality
in the most delightful way.
One of the highlights of the museum are the famous Illusion Rooms. Here, guests can explore the impossible: walk on ceilings in the upside-down room, appear to grow or shrink in size, and gaze into infinity through cleverly designed mirror illusions. These rooms don’t just entertain, they challenge perceptions and invite playful curiosity.
The museum also boasts a stunning collection of installations that blur the line between what’s real and what’s imagined. Designed to stimulate the senses and challenge conventional thinking, these interactive exhibits are perfect for snapping quirky photos and videos — if you can figure out what’s going on, that is! It’s not uncommon to hear gasps, laughter, and “How is that possible?!” echoing through the halls.
For those intrigued by the fine line between sight and illusion, the Optical Illusions and Holograms sections offer a deeper dive into the science of visual perception. Guests can marvel at 3D images that appear to jump from their frames, faces that follow your every move, and illusions that completely distort space and shape. The holograms, in particular, are a crowd favorite; shimmering images that vanish and reappear before your very eyes.
Not only does the Museum of Illusions provide an entertaining escape, but it also offers a valuable educational experience. Every illusion, installation, and image is accompanied by explanations that shed light on how and why our brains can be so easily tricked. It’s a fun way for both kids and adults to learn about vision, perception, and the quirks of the human mind.
Perfect for families, tourists, students, or even teambuilding events, the museum offers both self-guided exploration and pre-booked guided tours. Group visits and school field trips are highly encouraged, with staff on hand to guide visitors through the wild and whimsical world of illusions.
Whether you're looking to fill your phone with unique photos, learn something new, or just have a blast with friends, the Museum of Illusions Malta promises an unforgettable adventure. It’s a playful escape into a world where nothing is quite as it seems; and that’s exactly the point.
A Three-Day Nature Trail Itinerary in Malta and Gozo
Discover a different side of Malta with this threeday hiking itinerary through rugged cliffs, rural landscapes, and hidden coastal gems. Perfect for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, these scenic trails across Malta and Gozo offer a refreshing escape, panoramic views, and a deeper connection to the islands’ natural beauty.
Words by Terrence Mifsud
Despite its reputation for sunkissed beaches and historic temples, Malta is also an ideal destination for hikers and environment enthusiasts. Consequently, OhMyMalta has compiled a three-day itinerary, highlighting some of the best walking paths the Maltese islands have to offer if you want to unplug, get some exercise, and spend time in nature.
Day 1: The Victoria Lines & Imtahleb Loop
Commence your journey by taking on Malta's own "Great Wall," often known as the Victoria Lines. This 12-kilometre circuit traces a 19th-century British fortress that previously
separated Malta from the south, spanning the island's length. Start in Bingemma, close to the old fort (Fort Bingemma), then go west along the ridge. Walking on rocky limestone peaks, the path offers expansive views of lowlands, farms, and charming settlements. You'll witness terraced fields, former military buildings, and, if you're lucky, you could even

encounter raptors.
The Imtahleb region, one of Malta's most rural and pristine areas, is only a short drive from the end of the Victoria Lines. Rich in carob trees, wild plants, and expansive vistas of the northern shore, the Imtahleb Loop is a 6–8 kilometer circular trail that winds across undulating farmland. You may enjoy real rural Malta on this peaceful, off-the-beaten-path trek. Finally, we recommend that you end your day in Rabat with a traditional Maltese
supper, such as baked pasta (imqarrun ilforn) or rabbit stew.
Day 2: Coastal Cliffs and Watchtowers
Start your day early at Dingli Cliffs, Malta's highest point. The route heads south along the cliff edge, starting close to the little church of St Mary Magdalene. Terraced meadows, ancient shrines, and isolated farmhouses with unobstructed views of the Mediterranean Sea are all along the Dingli Cliffs and Fawwara Trail. It's a peaceful, windswept path that has a magical feel, particularly in the early morning. This is a moderately challenging route, encompassing a total of 9.3km. We suggest you be mindful if you take on this trail, as it is a very popular area for road biking.
After some rest or lounging, continue north to the Għajn Żnuber Tower in the Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park.
Surrounded by native vegetation and offering expansive views of Golden Bay and the ocean, this 5- to 7-kilometer circle hike blends coastal roads with scrubland trails. In a protected region brimming with history and wildlife, you'll pass the reconstructed WWII-era tower and stroll close to striking cliffs and rocky outcrops. For dinner, to commemorate such a monumental accomplishment, you might consider a calm evening meal at a coastal restaurant in Mellieha or Golden Bay— ideal for watching the sun set below the horizon.
Day 3: A trip to Gozo: Dahlet ilQorrot and Wied il-Ghasri
Take the early boat to Gozo and proceed northeastward along the island's coast. To get to Daħlet il-Qorrot, start your walk in Nadur or Qala and follow the rural pathways that wind among rocky outcrops, terraced farms, and wildflowers.
Imtahleb
Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park
This remote bay is well-known for its serene, crystal-clear waters and the historic boathouses set into the rocks. The hike is tranquil, offers satisfying vistas, and reflects some of the rustic beauty of Gozo.
After lunch, make your way to Wied ilGħasri on Gozo’s north coast—a narrow, winding gorge that runs down to a tiny,
pebbled beach. Start your walk in the village of Għasri and follow the path through farmland and rocky terrain down into the gorge. The landscape is dramatic and photogenic, with natural caves and high cliffs surrounding the water. It’s an easy to moderate trail that ends in one of Gozo’s most hidden swimming spots.
Unless you want to stay overnight, which we advise, you may have dinner in Victoria, the island's capital, or the charming town of Nadur before heading back to Malta. Ftira (Gozitan pizza), fresh seafood, and Gozitan cheese are all must-trys.
Given that the paths in Malta and Gozo are frequently rough and uneven, appropriate footwear is crucial whether you want to tackle all these routes or just one. Always wear sunscreen all day, and bring plenty of water, especially during the day. A light backpack with refreshments, a small first-aid kit, and a map or GPS software can help ensure a smooth walk. Although there is public transportation, you will have more freedom to choose between trailheads if you hire a car or hail a cab. Hiking is about the trip, not just the destination, therefore it's crucial to follow designated routes, be mindful of the environment, and take your time to appreciate the scenery.

natural beauty and evocative aura – one that seems to fall in harmony with the very core of humankind.
Relaxing mornings at the promontory under the gaze of the Xlendi coastal tower, slow afternoons on the red sands of Ramla Bay and blissful sunsets at Dwejra or Ta’ Ċenċ cliffs bring in new inspiration, catalysing newfound motivation. Despite its small size, Gozo seems to have evolved into a destination with many spaces offering fountains of positive energy. Why Hamlets should not be overlooked on your trip to Malta
Discover Malta’s lesser-known hamlets—peaceful, history-rich pockets of rural charm. From Madliena’s scenic calm to Bidnija’s olive-lined trails, these small communities offer timeless glimpses into the island’s pastoral past, each with its own unique story and character.
Words by Terrence Mifsud
Malta's modest but charming hamlets provide a softer, more serene side of island life when you go away from the bustle of the city. These little communities, which are frequently tucked away amid hills, farms, and beaches, have more to offer than just picturesque appeal. They are surviving artifacts from Malta's rural past.
In the past, Malta was home to a plethora of hamlets. About 60 little towns were dispersed over the islands in 1514. Before the plague epidemic of 1592 decimated people and caused several hamlets to be absorbed by bigger, nearby settlements, these rural living clusters flourished. Some survived, maintaining their distinct charm and link to the island's past, while others lost their names and identities over time.
Madliena, located north of Swieqi and bordering Għargħur, provides a countryside atmosphere despite being just minutes from popular destinations like St Julian's. Madliena, which was formerly a peaceful agriculture region, has developed into a posh neighborhood while preserving the serene ambiance and expansive vistas that have kept it unique for ages.
Madliena derives its name from a medieval church dedicated to St Mary Magdalen. The Madliena Tower, constructed in 1658 by the Knights of St John, is still located in the location, even though the original church is no longer there. This seaside watchtower provides views of Malta's northern shoreline and is a part of a series of fortifications. It is now a well-liked destination for hikers and anybody looking for a peaceful, quiet moment.
Bubaqra, now a part of Żurrieq, is located in Malta's southwest, surrounded by countryside and winding roads. This serene region of rural living is known for its distinct appeal, which is derived from ancient farmhouses and citrus trees. The spirit of the countryside is still very much alive, despite the intrusion of contemporary constructions. The 16thcentury Bubaqra Tower, which was later occupied by the Knights of St John, is one of the the hamlet's most famous structures. This fortified rural tower still serves as a reminder of Malta's defensive heritage. Additionally, Wied Fulija, a short distance away, is a nature lover's and hiker's paradise, offering walking pathways through terraced farms and down near Malta's southern coast. Bubaqra is
the ideal combination of rural tranquility and accessibility since, despite its rustic environment, it is only a short drive from the airport and other major touristic locations.
Despite not first seeming to be a typical hamlet, Guardamangia, which is tucked away between Pietà and Msida, has a unique personality and historical importance that makes it one of Malta's most intimate villages. Most famously, it is the location of Villa Guardamangia, which was Queen Elizabeth II's house during her early marriage. The mansion, which is now closed for renovation, will eventually be turned into a museum honouring Malta's royal ties and
Madliena Tower
Bubaqra Tower
mid-century history. It provides a window into a different age with its meandering streets and old buildings. Despite lacking vast valleys and farmland like other hamlets, it has a distinct charm due to its rich history and feeling of place.
Bidnija, which lies between Mosta and Burmarrad, is frequently regarded as Malta's smallest and maybe most tranquil rural hamlet. With a population of little over 300, the region is encircled by olive orchards, undulating farmland, and some of the best equestrian facilities on the island. Bidnija provides a genuine experience of Maltese country living. The peaceful roads and rural
vistas make it a popular destination for bikers and hikers. One of the natural features of Bidnija is Wied Qannotta, a verdant valley nestled between the hills. It provides views of traditional terraced farming and secluded walking trails.
Not to be mistaken with the southern Maltese town of the same name, Santa Luċija in Gozo is a tranquil hamlet right between Kerċem and Victoria. It is one of the smallest—and most arresting— communities on the island, with less than 300 inhabitants. The core of Santa Luċija is its attractive plaza, centered around the Chapel of St Lucy, a simple yet magnificent edifice
dating back to the 16th century. The chapel serves as a community hub, particularly during the yearly feast in December, which infuses this otherwise peaceful location with a subtle vibrancy.
These hamlets provide more than just a scenic diversion; each has its own tales, views, and spirits. They serve as a reminder of the strongly ingrained rural culture of Malta, where people live in close proximity to the land and their community. These little spots continue to be havens of peace, genuineness, and beauty despite the expansion of cities and the speed of contemporary life.

Six Sublime Sunset Spots in Malta & Gozo
There’s something quietly magical about a Maltese sunset, perhaps it’s the way the light dips lazily into the sea, the gold spilling over honey-coloured stone, or the hush that falls across the islands as day gives way to evening. Looking for a moment of calm, a touch of magic, or just the perfect shot? These are Malta and Gozo’s finest sunset backdrops.
Words by Dayna Camilleri Clarke
Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa
Golden Bay rarely needs an introduction, its beauty speaking louder than words, vast sands, calm waters, and front-row seats to the sun’s final bow. For something quieter, walk the path to Għajn Tuffieħa just next door. It’s a little wilder, a touch more rugged; the sunset here really feels like your own private show.
Xlendi, Gozo
A small, horseshoe bay with steep cliffs and colourful boats bobbing at anchor, Xlendi is a postcard brought to life. The sky blushes pink and orange as the sun sets beyond the horizon, reflecting gently across the calm water. Find a table at a waterfront restaurant, order a local beverage, and let the sky do the rest.
Hastings Gardens, Valletta
A quiet green space situated on the edge of the capital, Hastings Gardens offers an unbeatable vantage point over Marsamxett Harbour. It’s a local favourite for good reason. Come with a gelato or a bottle of wine, find a bench, and enjoy a moment of stillness above the bustle.
Dingli Cliffs
Towering above the sea on Malta’s western edge, the Dingli Cliffs offer drama and solitude in equal measure. The horizon stretches endlessly, and when the sun begins to fall, the whole world seems to pause. It’s windy, wild, and utterly breathtaking; many onlookers even applaud! . Bring a jumper and stay until the stars take over.
Mdina
The Silent City lives up to its name as dusk falls. Walk its narrow lanes just before sunset, then head to the bastions for a view that sweeps across the island to the sea. The sky flames behind the ancient walls, casting long shadows and bathing the limestone in a sepia-toned glow..
Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, Gozo
Remote and rarely crowded, these soaring cliffs are a haven for nature lovers. Birds soar overhead, the sea crashes below, and the sky opens up above you. It’s the sort of place where time slows down, and the day ends not with a bang, but a beautiful sigh.
The Historical Tales and Legends
Malta's scenery has been shaped not just by time and waves but also by stories that have been passed down through the ages and continue to echo through its palaces, chapels, and valleys. Terrence Mifsud lists five ageless legends that continue to fascinate and frighten people, with stories ranging from missing saints to cursed sinkholes. historical value.
Il-Maqluba is a huge sinkhole that is hidden in the peaceful countryside of Qrendi. Legends about it are as deep as the crater itself. Legend has it that this enormous crater wasn't formed by nature. According to the legend, the people who used to reside here had become so immoral that Heaven could no longer stand them. A virtuous woman, appalled by the transgressions of her neighbours, fervently pleaded for divine intervention. Her prayers were met with violence. Only the house of the devout woman, which amazingly survived on the brink of the abyss, was spared when the ground exploded, engulfing the entire community. According to some, she was taken away by angels prior to the collapse. Geologists may argue that Il-Maqluba was created by natural erosion, but locals would tell you that it is a terrifying reminder of the might of virtue. Travelling through Mosta will lead you to Wied Speranza, a serene valley known as the "Valley of Hope". A young Maltese girl was reported to have escaped Turkish invaders through this valley during the Ottoman assaults. As her assailants drew closer, she dropped on her knees in prayer, having nowhere to hide. A spider's web was all that was visible as they turned the corner; it was too flawless and undisturbed to suggest that anyone had entered the cave. The raiders continued, certain that the cave was deserted. The girl was secure. It appears that the spider spun a story of salvation in addition to silk.
Palace, nestled within the Buskett Gardens, is regal by day and haunted by night—or so the story goes. Many claim to have seen the “Blue Lady”, promised in marriage to a knight she did not love. In despair, after being locked inside the palace, she threw herself from the palace balcony, still dressed in the pale blue gown she had worn during her engagement. Since then, her spirit has wandered the halls of Verdala Palace, appearing to guests and guards alike. Described as beautiful yet melancholy, the Blue Lady serves as a reminder that even behind stone walls and titles, heartbreak knows no boundaries. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, few dare to spend the night alone in Verdala.
Located in the Buskett Gardens, Verdala Palace is said to be haunted at night and royal by day. Several people say they have seen the "Blue Lady", a melancholy ghost believed to be the soul of a noblewoman who died tragically.

Legends from Malta & Gozo
The Blue Lady is a reminder that sadness knows no bounds, even when it is hidden beneath titles and stone walls. Few people dare to spend the night alone in Verdala, regardless of whether they believe in ghosts or not.
In addition to its traffic-free streets, the walled city of Mdina, sometimes referred to as the Silent City, is quiet because of the reverent stillness surrounding its tales, particularly that of Saint Agatha. Around 249 AD, Agatha fled persecution in Sicily and sought safety in Malta. According to legend, she spent some time in a cave beneath the present-day chapel in Rabat that bears her name. In exchange for the Maltese protecting her from Roman forces, she left behind more than just a memory— she left them marvels. The people of Mdina prayed to Saint Agatha for protection during a Turkish invasion centuries later. According to the legend, she rallied the city's defenders when she materialised in the skies in a vision while wearing a red robe. Terrified by the enigmatic
apparition, the invaders retreated. To this day, Saint Agatha is still revered as one of the island's most ferocious guardian.
Perhaps the most moving of them all is the legend of San Dimitri. A small chapel sits close to a precipitous cliff with a view of the sea in the peaceful settlement of Għarb. Legend has it that a pious mother named Żgugina prayed at the chapel every day, pleading with San Dimitri to preserve her son from corsairs. Her hopes were answered one day in the most spectacular way. To save the boy, San Dimitri is reported to have jumped from the chapel's picture, leaped through the wall, and raced across the sea on his horse. According to the legend, he brought him back safely and left a small outline of his horse scorched into the stone. According to locals, San Dimitri still rides his horse when his people need him because on some evenings you can still hear the sound of hooves resonating around the cliffs.
