October in Malta is one of the best times to be here. The days are still warm enough for sea swims, the evenings are cooler and perfect for strolling, and the calendar is packed with exciting things to do. Culture, food, music, and history all take centre stage this month, making the islands feel more alive than ever.
One of the highlights is Notte Bianca, when Valletta bursts into colour, sound, and creativity. The capital becomes a stage in itself, with streets, squares, churches, and palaces opening up for live performances, music, and art. Cafés and restaurants stay open late, giving you every excuse to keep exploring.
Food lovers won’t want to miss the festival celebrating Maltese cuisine, where local producers, live cooking, and family-friendly activities serve up a feast of flavours and traditions. And that’s just the beginning. Throughout October, you’ll also find theatre productions, art exhibitions, concerts, and street performances across the islands.
This issue also takes you through the historic streets of Birgu, once the first home of the Knights of St John, and invites you to rediscover Valletta, a city built to be explored on foot. For those craving calm, we reveal 10 tranquil spots in Gozo, from the salt pans of Xwejni to the dramatic Ta’ Ċenċ cliffs.
So dive in, wander freely, and let Malta surprise you at every turn.
We couldn’t be happier to welcome you to Oh My Malta.

Valletta Comes Alive for One Magical Night
On Saturday 4 October 2025, Malta’s capital city, Valletta, will transform into a giant open-air cultural playground for Notte Bianca – the country’s most anticipated night of the year.
Every October, this much-loved festival turns Valletta into a hive of creativity, with its majestic streets, squares, gardens and hidden courtyards brimming with life. From dusk till late, the city pulses with performances, installations and artistic surprises, welcoming thousands of visitors who come to soak up the atmosphere.
This year promises to be the biggest edition yet. With more than 350 local and international artists bringing over 70 projects
to Valletta, the programme spans every imaginable art form: live music, theatre, dance, visual arts, street performances, and interactive experiences. Families can expect shows created especially for children, while adults can dive into cutting-edge performances and late-night concerts.
For 2025, Notte Bianca introduces a brandnew highlight: the Church of St Ursula will open its doors for the first time as part of the festival, offering a rare opportunity to enjoy art in one of Valletta’s most atmospheric spaces.
The beauty of Notte Bianca is the freedom it gives you to create your own adventure. You can follow one of the curated festival routes, each guiding you through a different artistic
theme, or simply wander through Valletta’s winding streets and let the night surprise you. Whichever way you choose, the experience is designed to be unforgettable.
Valletta itself is as much a star of the night as the artists. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is a treasure trove of Baroque architecture, grand piazzas and charming side streets. During Notte Bianca, these landmarks are reimagined with lights, sounds and performances that reveal the city in an entirely new way.
Why Notte Bianca? Because in one extraordinary night you’ll see Malta’s culture in full colour: bold, diverse and bursting with energy – all against the backdrop of its historic capital.
Top Things to See in Vittoriosa (Birgu)
Steeped in history and charm, Birgu is one of Malta’s oldest and most atmospheric towns. Once the first home of the Knights of St John, it has witnessed sieges, triumphs, and centuries of maritime trade. Today, its narrow streets, imposing fortresses, and lively waterfront make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the island.
St Lawrence Parish Church Complex
Behind the Baroque façade of St Lawrence Church lies a treasure trove of relics and artefacts, including silver works, sacred vestments, and even the battle-sword and hat of Grand Master Jean de Valette. During special open weekends, visitors may also access crypts, chapels, and archival treasures usually kept out of sight.
Inquisitor’s Palace
Unique in Europe, the Inquisitor’s Palace is one of the few remaining intact palaces of its kind. Beyond its elegant courtyards and frescoed halls, the palace contains stark reminders of its darker past, including original prison cells and the tribunal where cases of heresy were heard. Today, it’s also home to a museum that explains both the workings of the Inquisition and daily life in Malta under the Knights, making it one of the most compelling cultural stops in Birgu.
Fort St Angelo
Towering at the tip of Birgu, Fort St. Angelo is the town’s most iconic landmark and one of Malta’s greatest fortresses. It was the strategic stronghold of the Knights during the Great Siege of 1565 and today offers a fascinating mix of medieval, knightly, and British military history. A visit here is not only about the fort’s past, but also about the views; from the ramparts you’ll see sweeping panoramas of the Grand Harbour, Valletta, and the other Two Cities.
Victory Square
At the heart of Birgu lies Victory Square, the town’s social and cultural hub. Surrounded by historic buildings, cafés, and restaurants, it is the perfect place to pause, watch daily life unfold, and absorb the local atmosphere. The square often hosts events and festivals, but even on an ordinary day it provides a charming setting to sip a coffee and reflect on the history you’ve just walked through.

6 of Valletta’s Streets You’ll Actually Want to Get Lost In
Valletta is one of those cities that feels as though it was built to be explored on foot. Every corner, every alley seems to have a story tucked away, waiting for someone curious enough to notice. While most visitors head straight for the main squares or the Upper Barrakka Gardens, it’s the quieter streets where Valletta truly shows its character. Forget the map for a while and let your feet guide you.
St Barbara Bastion
St Barbara Bastion isn’t a street in the traditional sense, but the area around this old fortification is worth a wander. The bastion itself was built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century and offers sweeping views over the Grand Harbour. Walk along the edge and you can almost hear the bygone times of the soldiers pacing, cannons being loaded, and ships slowly making their way into the harbour below. Nearby paths and lanes lead down to lesser-known corners of the city where tourists rarely venture.
St Lucy Street
St Lucy Street is a gentle contrast. This narrow lane drops down towards the water, framed by quaint steps and modest balconies. Cafés spill onto the pavement, their tables shaded by umbrellas, and there’s a calmness to the street that makes it a good spot to pause, sip a coffee, and watch the rhythm of everyday life in the city unfold.
Strait Street
Strait Street carries a more colourful history. Once infamous for its raucous nightlife, it’s now quieter by day but still full of character. Small bars, galleries, and artisan shops line the narrow thoroughfare. Walking here, you can imagine the music and chatter that once filled the street, a reminder of Valletta’s slightly wilder past.
Republic Street
Republic Street is the heartbeat of Valletta, stretching from the City Gate right down to Fort St Elmo. Always lively, it’s where history and modern life meet, llined with cafés, shops, museums, and beautiful old palaces. Whether you’re after a relaxed stroll, some people-watching over coffee, or exploring the city’s rich culture, Republic Street is the perfect place to experience Valletta’s charm.
Merchants Street
Merchants Street is one of the city’s main arteries, lined with shops and cafes. There’s a real bustle here, but if you take a side alley, you can find hidden courtyards in MUZA or quiet corners away from the crowds. The street’s charm isn’t in grand gestures but in the small details, an old street sign, a carved doorframe, a friendly nod from a local shopkeeper, or a sleeping cat. Stroll down the road slowly and pop into Camilleri's sweet shop for an ice cream, a local treasure dating back to the 1800s.
Old Theatre Street
Old Theatre Street rounds out the list. Its slightly uneven paving stones and elegant buildings hint at performances and gatherings long gone. The cafés and small restaurants here invite a slower pace, giving the feeling that the street has retained a quiet dignity amidst the city’s busier lanes.

Experience Guided Tours of Malta's Historic Theatre
Step inside one of Europe’s oldest working theatres with a tour of Teatru Manoel in Valletta. Discover its rich Baroque history, explore behind the scenes, or enjoy a theatrical twist with the entertaining and immersive Grand Tour led by actor Jeremy Grech.
In the year 1732, a deed was signed by the Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena to have several houses in Valletta purchased and converted into a theatre. Over the years the building has been transformed into what we now know as Teatru Manoel. One of the oldest working theatres in Europe, Teatru Manoel has a long and rich history that features operas, plagues, restoration, wars, comedies, and so much more. And if you’ve ever wanted to explore the theatre up close, now’s your chance.
Teatru Manoel offers a variety of theatre tours throughout the week that will allow
guests to learn about this special theatre’s history and encounter the details of the lavishly decorated interior of this Baroque architectural masterpiece.
The first option is a general tour offered by the Teatru Manoel staff. At this tour you’ll get to visit the theatre and learn about how it has changed and evolved since it was built three centuries ago. From learning about the different backstage departments, stage mechanisms, and the intricate baroque design elements, you’ll get a detailed overview of this exciting venue. This tour costs €10 per person, with group booking suggested in advance. Tours are available at various times throughout the day from Monday to Saturday.
If you’re looking for something a bit more elevated and personalised, Teatru Manoel is once again teaming up with House of Tours to bring you ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ in a performance/tour hybrid that is not to be missed. Led by actor and tour guide Jeremy Grech – who has trod the boards at Teatru Manoel himself several times – ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ will allow you to learn historical facts that you might not find in your average history book. Grech, who runs local ‘theatretourism’ company House of Tours, combines his theatrical skills with his certification in tour guiding to create compelling, interactive, and informative tours that really immerse guests in the time and space that they are exploring. The Grand
Tour lasts roughly one hour, happening twice a day every Tuesday, at 11am and 3pm. ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ has received high praise, with one guest calling it “a perfect balance of history and entertainment” and another saying they would “highly recommend it to both locals and foreigners”. Jeremy will take you on an exciting journey through time, and even explain to you his favourite aspects of the theatre, including the building’s impressive endurance, “From the Knights to the French to the British to now…it has refused to go down. Not even the War could touch it!” This is the perfect tour for people looking to learn more about the theatre, those looking for an entertaining hour of fun, and those looking to escape the summer heat. Tickets for the Grand Tour cost €20 per person Normal weekly tours of Teatru Manoel will continue to run alongside the Grand Tour.
Guests are advised that since Teatru Manoel is a working theatre with ongoing rehearsals and other technical work, there are certain times when the main auditorium will be inaccessible, and it may be necessary for tours to be cancelled or rescheduled.
For further information on tour times and tickets, call the Box Office at (+356) 21246389 or drop by in person Monday to Saturday from 10am onwards.

25 Years of Creativity at Malta’s National Centre for the Arts
Marking its 25th anniversary, Spazju Kreattiv celebrates a legacy of creativity and connection while unveiling a bold 2025–26 programme of over 550 events.
As Spazju Kreattiv, Malta’s National Centre for Creativity, marks its twenty-fifth anniversary, the historic venue within Valletta’s St James Cavalier enters a moment of celebration and renewal, reaffirming its role as a cornerstone of Malta’s cultural heartbeat. For a quarter of a century, this national centre has been a meeting place where artists and audiences converge, where emerging and established voices alike are encouraged to explore, question, and create. From its earliest days, Spazju Kreattiv has gone beyond presenting artistic work, cultivating dialogue around the processes of imagination and inviting communities to witness the courage and vulnerability inherent in creation.
Driven by a multidisciplinary programme, the organisation has consistently
championed diversity, inclusivity, and collaboration. Its flagship initiatives have amplified new generations of creatives, ensuring that curiosity and innovation remain integral to Malta’s cultural fabric. At the same time, the steady leadership of Fondazzjoni Kreattività, under the chairmanship of Rupert Cefai, has provided sound governance, fostering resilience and adaptability in a constantly shifting landscape.
Over the years, Spazju Kreattiv has deepened its ties with local and international partners alike, ranging from voluntary organisations and educational bodies to cultural institutions and independent artists. These connections have built bridges that extend beyond Malta’s shores while anchoring the centre firmly within the nation’s creative ecosystem. Now, with the unveiling of its 2025–2026 programme, under the artistic direction of Daniel Azzopardi, Spazju Kreattiv honours this legacy while embracing a new horizon, one defined by bold creative ventures and imaginative encounters designed to inspire reflection and connection. The
upcoming 2025–26 season features over 550 events across 18 creative forms, including exhibitions that challenge perception, performances that blend tradition with contemporary experimentation, and outreach projects that place community sharing and education at the heart of cultural growth. Each initiative reflects the organisation’s belief in art as a transformative force: one that not only entertains but also shapes thought, fosters empathy, and builds community.
This anniversary year is therefore more than a commemoration; it is a pledge to continue nurturing creativity in all its forms, to empower artists to take risks, and to invite audiences into a shared journey of discovery. At twenty-five, Spazju Kreattiv stands as both a celebration of all that has been achieved and a call to imagine what is yet to come, a reminder that creativity, when nurtured with vision and purpose, has the power to carry us into a future as dynamic, inclusive, and vibrant as the stories we tell.

10 TRANQUIL SPOTS IN
GOZO
For many, Gozo might be Malta’s best-kept secret. The island, accessible only by ferry, is a unique destination to explore during your holiday. Like a storybook waiting to be opened, Gozo offers a mosaic of authentic historical, cultural, religious and adventures and experiences. The island captures the essence of the last mile, a destination with a good dose of locations that pulsate with the soul of ‘calm’ and spots where the rest of the world feels far away, and where you can possibly start a journey of wellness.
Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs
On the southern edge of the island stand the Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, dropping sharply into the deep blue sea from a height of 120 metres. Standing at the top is akin to the view of the soaring birds that inhabit the area. Tranquil and still at all hours of the day, the only sounds you’re bound to hear are bird calls, insect hums or the sound of your footsteps. There are several country paths to follow around the garigue plateau and the coastal edge. The place is mesmerising at sunrise when the sun stretches out from behind Comino and mainland Malta, and utterly magical at sunset when the sea seems to be set aglow with the golden light.
San Blas Beach
The hidden, red-sandy beach, strewn with large, dark boulders, is a serene spot with no crowds and no loud beach bars. Access to the beach is via a steep path, ensuring it remains peaceful throughout all seasons. There’s something deeply primal about San Blas and having the beach all to yourself — a rare kind of peace that’s hard to match. As dusk falls and mauve shadows stretch across the glowing reds of the sky, you might catch yourself wondering whether you’ve stepped into a postcard or if this moment is real.
Lunzjata Valley
Step back in time and wander off to Lunzjata Valley. Despite being nestled in the heart of the island, between the city of Victoria and the village of Kerċem, Lunzjata Valley echoes vernacular rural charm. Enter through the grand arch, a building that testifies to the grandeur and nobility of the hunting grounds of the Knights of St. John. Take a stroll down the main path beside the small chapel built into the rocky ledge right up to the fountain where farmers washed their produce. The sauntering cats will greet you, and there amid the lush green fields and orchards, you’ll find a sense of luxurious peace.
Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary
Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary is, first and foremost, a pilgrim’s place. Still, whether or not you’re a religious or spiritual person, you will discover that the Basilica amid Gozo’s western countryside offers a truly calming experience. The silence, the setting, the stone sculpture, the mosaics and the stained-glass windows open a window in the hearts of many visitors who stop to sit quietly for a moment of prayer or reflection.
Qbajjar Salt Pans
Located near Marsalforn, the geometric salt pans — mirroring the sky with ever-shifting colours— resemble mosaic tesserae laid out against a dramatic sea backdrop. The reflective water or saltcrystal surfaces capture the passing light, creating a living canvas that changes with every hour. The area, which is easily accessible even for those with mobility impairments, thanks to its position parallel to the coastal road, glows at sunset and seems like a capsule vibrating and radiating light and energy.
Xwejni Bay
If you want to hide away for a morning or afternoon, head to this small bay. The small rocky cove right next to Qbajjar, Xwejni Bay, is ideal for peaceful swims, snorkelling or just reading a book by the sea. And it all comes with a beautiful and unique backdrop of Il-Qolla l-Bajda, a limestone knoll rising out of the coast, contrasting with the blue seas and sky.
Tal-Mixta Cave
It takes some twists and turns to get to Tal-Mixta cave, but once you get to this rocky outpost overlooking the sandy bays of Ramla, you’ll be immersed in the stillness and serenity that the spot offers, along with spectacular views. If you want to pause and soak in the tranquillity, it is best to visit early in the morning or late in the day, when there is less chance of sharing the space with other visitors.
Għasri Valley
Offbeat and accessible only via a steep set of steps chiselled out of the rock, the narrow pebbly inlet, flanked by cliffs on both sides, is great for meditative days, when dips in crystalline waters, journaling, inspired poetry writing, or plein-air sketching in solitude offer a deeply nourishing escape.
Xlendi Coastal Tower
Cross over the Kantra inlet via the stone bridge and
hike up the steep side of the cliff face. Follow the path to the Xlendi coastal tower and the surrounding area. The recently restored tower, juxtaposed on the edge, has stood on guard since the 17th century, overlooking the rough and craggy salt pans at the edge of the coast, and echoes a timeless vibe. Pause and sit down on the smooth, yellow limestone rock hollows, shaped like cradles by centuries of relentless waves and sea spray. This is yet another perfect spot for sunset chasers to soak in the magic.
Villa Rundle Gardens
One overlooked calm spot in the centre of
the island’s capital is Villa Rundle Gardens. The garden may not be vast by continental standards, but it is a tranquil oasis of peace and shade, where tall trees offer welcome relief as you stroll around Victoria. Open from early in the morning till late in the evening, the garden is a popular retreat for both locals and visitors, old and young alike.
Bonus: Comino (off-season)
For the ultimate getaway far from the madding crowd, check out Comino during the non-peak season (late autumn to early spring). Only two residents have their home here, so if you’re intent on being alone only
with your thoughts, this is the place you’re seeking.
Hike out the various paths, check out the Santa Marija coastal tower, visit the different bays and take a dip in the crystalline lagoons!
These are just our favourite ten. As you explore the island, you will discover tucked away in Gozo’s villages, valleys, and along the coast, many a turn that quietly catches you off guard with their quaint charm and whispers serenity in your journey of discovery.

Introducing Malta’s Nomad Heritage Card
Malta has always been a crossroads of cultures, where Neolithic temples older than Stonehenge stand beside Baroque palaces, medieval streets, and wartime fortifications. For those embracing the digital nomad lifestyle, the islands are already a dream base with sunshine, sea views and great connectivity. But now, Malta offers something unique that goes beyond fast WiFi and seaside cafés: the Nomad Heritage Card.
The Nomad Heritage Card is an initiative by Residency Malta, created in collaboration with Heritage Malta, as an exclusive benefit for holders of the Nomad Residence Permit, Malta’s official digital nomad visa.
So, what is the permit? In short, it’s Malta’s residency programme for remote professionals.
Freelancers, entrepreneurs and employees of foreign companies can apply if they can work from anywhere and want to call Malta home. The permit allows nomads to live on the islands while continuing their remote work for clients and companies abroad. And with it comes access to the Nomad Heritage Card; a cultural perk that connects you with 8,000 years of history.
Where it can take you
forts, and UNESCO-listed Neolithic monuments. From ancient engineering to wartime resilience, these sites are far more than tourist attractions; they are living touch points that embody Malta’s history and identity.
Why it matters for nomads
Nomads on the permit can now apply for the exclusive Nomad Heritage Card, available on a first-come, first-served basis until stocks last. The card grants Main Applicants and their Plus Ones free entry to the majority of Heritage Malta sites.
This portfolio spans a stunning range of cultural landmarks: archaeological sites, Baroque auberges and palaces, catacombs,
Relocating to a new country is about more than internet speeds or coffee shops.
It’s about belonging. The Nomad Heritage Card helps digital nomads go beyond being visitors by weaving them into Malta’s story and community, and becoming, as Heritage Malta’s slogan puts it: “Part of Us”.
