Experience Guided Tours of Malta's Historic Theatre
Step inside one of Europe’s oldest working theatres with a tour of Teatru Manoel in Valletta. Discover its rich Baroque history, explore behind the scenes, or enjoy a theatrical twist with the entertaining and immersive Grand Tour led by actor Jeremy Grech.
In the year 1732, a deed was signed by the Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena to have several houses in Valletta purchased and converted into a theatre. Over the years the building has been transformed into what we now know as Teatru Manoel. One of the oldest working theatres in Europe, Teatru Manoel has a long and rich history that features operas, plagues, restoration, wars, comedies, and so much more. And if you’ve ever wanted to explore the theatre up close, now’s your chance.
Teatru Manoel offers a variety of theatre tours throughout the week that will allow guests to learn about this special theatre’s history and encounter the details of the lavishly decorated interior of this Baroque architectural masterpiece.
The first option is a general tour offered by the Teatru Manoel staff. At this tour you’ll get to visit the theatre and learn about how it has changed and evolved since it was built three centuries ago. From learning about the different backstage departments, stage mechanisms, and the intricate baroque design elements, you’ll get a detailed overview of this exciting venue. This tour costs €10 per person, with group booking suggested in advance. Tours are available at various times throughout the day from Monday to Saturday.
If you’re looking for something a bit more elevated and personalised, Teatru Manoel is once again teaming up with House of Tours to bring you ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ in a performance/tour hybrid that is not to be missed. Led by actor and tour guide Jeremy Grech – who has trod the boards at Teatru Manoel himself several times – ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ will allow you to learn historical facts that you might not find in your average history book. Grech, who runs local ‘theatretourism’ company House of Tours, combines his theatrical skills with his certification in tour guiding to create compelling, interactive, and informative tours that really immerse guests in the time and
space that they are exploring. The Grand Tour lasts roughly one hour, happening twice a day every Tuesday, at 10.30am and 12pm. ‘The Grand Tour of Teatru Manoel’ has received high praise, with one guest calling it “a perfect balance of history and entertainment” and another saying they would “highly recommend it to both locals and foreigners”. Jeremy will take you on an exciting journey through time, and even explain to you his favourite aspects of the theatre, including the building’s impressive endurance, “From the Knights to the French to the British to now…it has refused to go down. Not even the War could touch it!” This is the perfect tour for people looking to learn more about the theatre, those looking for an entertaining hour of fun, and those looking to escape the summer heat. Tickets for the Grand Tour cost €20 per person Normal weekly tours of Teatru Manoel will continue to run alongside the Grand Tour.
Guests are advised that since Teatru Manoel is a working theatre with ongoing rehearsals and other technical work, there are certain times when the main auditorium will be inaccessible, and it may be necessary for tours to be cancelled or rescheduled.
For further information on tour times and tickets, call the Box Office at (+356) 21246389 or drop by in person Monday to Saturday from 10am onwards.

EXPERIENCE MALTA’S UNIQUE NATIONAL THEATRE
DAILY VISITS AVAILABLE
3-Day Beach Hopping Guide
By Terrence Mifsud
Malta's coastline may be relatively small, but it has a plethora of quiet coves, cliffs, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. For anybody looking for a beachy adventure, this 3-day beach-hopping tour is ideal for seeing the islands' various coastline beauties. We have split the itinerary into three main parts: the southern part of Malta, the northern part of Malta, and another day entirely for its sister island, Gozo.
Day 1: Southern Malta
The southern coast of Malta provides a unique beach experience, with less expansive sand and more rugged, dramatic scenery, natural rock pools, and crystal-clear seas to reward the daring. These southern coast spots are must-see spots for beach enthusiasts.
Wied Babu, Żurrieq
Wied Babu, a steep valley surrounded by flora in the Żurrieq area has recently garnered popularity as a hiking and climbing destination following some viral TikTok clips
from various tourists exploring it. It's not a beach in the classic sense, but rather a serene natural valley that leads to the cliffs. Wear sturdy shoes and get ready for a short walk. While you're there, head to Wied iż-Żurrieq, a nearby coastal inlet, well-known for boat cruises to the Blue Grotto. Though not ideal for sunbathing, it's a terrific spot for swimming off the rocks or having a bite to eat while admiring the sea view.
St Thomas Bay, Marsaskala
St. Thomas Bay, located in the seaside resort of Marsaskala, provides a unique expanse of sand along the southern coast. It's particularly popular among families and novice paddleboarders. There are shops and beach clubs, and it is easily accessible by car or bus from Valletta or the southern cities.
St Peter’s Pool, Marsaxlokk
This natural lido is situated on the Delimara peninsula, near Marsaxlokk. It's best accessible by car or taxi due to its rough slope heading down. Arrive early to get a decent place and carry beverages and sunscreen
as there are no amenities nearby. This lido garnered even more attention following the virality of Tina the Diving Dog just a few years ago.
Għar Lapsi, Siġġiewi
Għar Lapsi, a rocky cove in Siggiewi, is a popular snorkelling destination due to its clean waters and diverse reef life. It's easily accessible by car and public transportation, and there's a tiny patio bar with views. Though modest, it is peaceful and ideal for a leisurely afternoon swim followed by a seafood meal.
Day 2: Northern Malta
Malta’s north is where you’ll find those postcard-perfect beaches: long stretches of golden sand, rolling hills, and shallow turquoise waters. It’s time to slow the pace and soak in the summer glow.
Għadira Bay (Mellieħa Bay), Mellieħa
Malta's largest sandy beach is located under the hilltop town of Mellieħa. It's a shallow harbour ideal for young families, with plenty
St Peter's Pool, Marsaxlokk
Għajn Tuffieħa, Mġarr
Wied Babu
of umbrellas, water activities, and dining options nearby. Mellieħa bay is one of the most accessible beaches on the island, with many bus lines connecting it to Valletta and St Paul's Bay.
Għajn Tuffieħa, Mġarr
Għajn Tuffieħa is a charming paradise set between cliffs, with a broad sandy length supported by nature. It is known as Riviera Bay and has a slope with more than 100-step descent. It has a wilder atmosphere than adjacent beaches, with a tiny kiosk and lifeguards.
Ġnejna Bay, Mġarr
Ġnejna, located near Għajn Tuffieħa, is a popular sand and pebble beach. The tranquil waters make it ideal for kayaking and floating. Parking is accessible nearby, and the neighbourhood is calmer on weekdays. It's great for people who want a less touristic experience.
Fomm ir-Riħ, Baħrija
Fomm ir-Riħ, Malta's remotest beach, is
a pebble bay with high cliffs and pristine environment. Located in the small village of Baħrija, it's accessible by an unpaved trail that demands careful hiking. There are no amenities, yet it is the preferred location for dedicated swimmers and those seeking privacy.
Day 3: Gozo
Cross the water to Malta's greener sister island, Gozo, for one more day of beach bliss.
Ramla Bay, Xagħra
Ramla, Gozo's most recognisable beach, is known for its long stretch of reddish-golden sand and legendary connections to Calypso's Cave. The beach has a café and loungers, and it is accessible by public transport from Victoria and Marsalforn. It's a laid-back, family-friendly destination with countryside scenery.
Wied il-Għasri, Żebbuġ
This tiny cove surrounded by rocks is one
of Gozo's most picturesque locations. It's ideal for snorkelling, with underwater caverns and calm seas. Access is by a steep slope, and the pebbled cove is best visited early to avoid crowds. The region is largely undeveloped and unspoiled.
San Blas Bay, Nadur
San Blas Bay, located behind Nadur's terraced fields, is a calm red sand hideaway. It's smaller and quieter than Ramla bay, and you can get there on foot down a steep slope. Because of its tough access, it's rarely crowded, making it a fantastic hideaway for people preferring tranquillity and natural beauty.
In reality, these are only some of our favourite beaches as there is so much more to explore. Whether you're diving into sea caves, relaxing on pristine sands, or visiting secret coves, this 3-day beach trip showcases the finest of Malta and Gozo. So, what are you waiting for? Grab some sunscreen and lots of water, and get ready to explore!

THE DOME EXPERIENCE
MORE HOURS FOR A BETTER EXPERIENCE
Discover the awe-inspiring Mosta Dome — a majestic rotunda in Malta blending history, architecture, and wartime miracles. Visit day or night this summer and experience its unforgettable grandeur.
While in Malta you cannot miss a visit to the Dome. The beautiful and majestic Basilica of the Assumption in the town of Mosta should be in the must-see bucket list of every visitor to the Maltese Islands. It offers an experience second to none. No wonder it is one of the top places in Malta, sought after by tourists and locals alike. Its uniqueness is its brand.
It is a rotunda – a place of worship built in the round, emulating Rome’s Pantheon.
Its unsupported dome is big – gigantic describes it more accurately.
It is an architectural beauty – a mix of neo-
classical designs and motifs.
It has challenged doom – a bomb, no five, were dropped on it within the space of minutes, during a fateful day in April 1942, and none exploded.
It offers an all-round experience – one can go on the roof and take in the mind-blowing view; one can go beneath it and travel back in time inside the wartime shelter; one can
go inside the church and fathom the array of art, architecture, design and colour that make the interior an explosion of amazement and wonder.
Yet, these are all words. The experience comes alive only when you are there, in this gem right in the centre of the island of Malta.
And now, for the months of July, August and September, you have no excuses. You
NORMAL HOURS: Monday-Friday: 9:30-17:30 Saturday: 9:30-16:30 Sunday: 12:00-17:00
cannot say there is no time. While enjoying the beach, the various sites, the shopping and any other activity which may be more attractive during the sunlight, the Mosta Rotunda will be available for you to visit on extended hours.
Yes, that’s right! Further to the daily opening hours, which will continue to make the Basilica available for visits during the week, these hours run into the night on Tuesdays
and Fridays – from 7.00 pm to 11.00 pm.
Take your time in beautiful Malta. Go where you wish to go; but do not miss an experience which millions have already enjoyed, keep coming back and continue to remember fondly. Come over to Mosta in the evening, during the cooler Maltese nights. Tour at leisure the magnificent Basilica. Enjoy what you will see; cherish every moment.
And after a satisfying visit, drop in and savour Maltese hospitality and a snack at the Dome Visitors Centre, just outside the Rotunda. Have a tea or a coffee while also enjoying a mouthwatering pastry or the renowned king of Maltese street food, the pastizz, filled with ricotta or peas. A relaxing moment in an unforgettable visit to the Basilica of the Assumption.
You will leave fulfilled.
GOZO BY NIGHT
During the day, the bright sun drenches and illuminates Gozo, making life on the Mediterranean island a kaleidoscope of colour surrounded by azure seas. As the sun sets on the island’s western side, a moment of intense inspiration for those who watch the spectacle, the stage is set for Gozo by night.
If you’re intent on capturing Gozo’s unique sunsets, it is best to head out to places like Dwejra, Xwejni and Xlendi. These three locations are great spots for basking in the splendid hues of fiery tangerine, amber and gold as they melt into pink, mauve and violet. Apart from picture-perfect settings, witnessing the majestic Gozitan sunset is an evocative experience. But what’s there to do on Gozo after sunset?
Outdoor night adventures in Gozo can take various formats. Discovering Gozo by night is about uncovering an island in chiaroscuro. Places like the Citadel, the old alleyways in Victoria, and the stunning views of Gozo’s churches spot-lit are very suggestive at nighttime. Astronomy lovers can seek out the dark-sky spots and have a stint at stargazing at places like Dwejra. Sunset and nighttime boat trip offered by some operators are equally exciting. Nighttime diving is undoubtedly a unique adventure, as it is the time when aquatic creatures come out of their hiding places for the nightly forays. For
a peaceful evening at one with nature, Ramla Bay provides the perfect tranquil setting to witness and be engulfed in the transformation that happens as the day fades into the night. Twilight at beaches like Ramla, San Blas and others is like balm to the soul that seeks to hush out the chaotic whirlwind of modern fast-paced life.
Evening dining on the island can feel laid-back, romantic, or lively, depending on where you go. Popular seaside dining spots take the winning spot during the summer months. The reflection of lights on the water makes dining at the water’s edge more magical at places like Xlendi, Marsalforn, and Mġarr, where most restaurants are usually bustling in the evenings serving fresh seafood. One can pick other seaside locations like Qbajjar for a less crowded setting. A perfect late night in Gozo ends with the sweet taste of ice cream at one of the many gelaterias.
Another side of Gozo is the disco and clubbing scene. La Grotta, probably Gozo’s top summer club, perched dramatically in a cliffside setting with open-air dance floors, has been a legendary venue for partygoers since 1986. For true party lovers, nothing beats dancing under a starlit sky. The summer months are also the peak season for parties, open-air festivals and boat parties. Chill alternatives such as wine bars in Victoria, live music venues and seafront lounges in Mġarr, Marsalforn and Xlendi stay open until late at night.

The AIRPORT DIRECT bus offers a comfortable, frequent and quick connection from the Airport to Malta’s main destinations including Buġibba, Ċirkewwa, the Fast Ferry to Gozo, Gżira, Mellieħa, Pembroke, Rabat, Sliema, St. Julian’s, and Valletta. The Airport Direct Bus service is included in your Unlimited Travel Card and hence does not come at any extra cost. Summer nights in Gozo are all about the outdoors. Evening concerts in the open air happen throughout the season, and some of the events are a regular weekly occurrence at specific villages and squares.
The village feasts mark Gozo’s summer nights. The traditional feast the village’s patron saint is synonymous with grand celebrations inside and outside the church. It is an event that draws out all the villagers. Once the church services are over in the early evening hours, the focus shifts to the outside festivities, where traditional bands march through
the streets along with the cheering crowd of youths. The atmosphere is rendered spectacular with fireworks. Fireworks displays are typical on the island of Gozo and are a signature of many of the village’s feasts. It is easy to join in the fun of the Gozitan feasts. Street food and various food stalls are typically available, but you can even find a seating spot at the village restaurants or bars in the main square.
Naturally, night-time stints are more comfortable when one has rented transport. If you’re planning your
movements around the island, it’s essential to know that public transport operates until 11 p.m. However, taxis and other ride-hailing services will always cover late night escapades.
Maybe you’re after chasing the sunsets and the unique twilight atmosphere that follows, or maybe you want to bask in the scenic night views or capture the thrill of nighttime adventures. Gozo by night offers a vibrant contrast to its sunlit days. The charm doesn’t fade at sunset; instead, the island transforms, inviting visitors to mingle with the locals and experience the magic of Mediterranean nights.

The building itself, shaped like a starfish, has become an architectural landmark in Qawra. Its location by the sea is complemented by a nearby
promenade that invites visitors to relax, take in the views, and enjoy additional amenities like a children’s play area, making the experience enjoyable for all ages.
Education is a major focus at the aquarium. In collaboration with the iLearn Biology Team, it delivers programmes aligned with Malta’s national curriculum. Students visiting the site benefit from hands-on learning experiences, while daily public talks raise awareness of pressing issues such as plastic pollution, species loss, and ocean conservation. This interactive style of education encourages critical thinking and fosters environmental responsibility.
What truly sets the Malta National Aquarium apart is its commitment to sustainability. Every aspect of its operations reflects a dedication to protecting marine life and respecting the local environment.
The aquarium not only enhances the natural beauty of Qawra Point but also promotes a deeper understanding of our relationship with the sea.

A Wheat Harvest Untouched by Chemicals
Emily A. Francis meets Annalisa Schembri, a dedicated farmer in iżŻurrieq, to explore Malta’s chemical-free wheat harvest and discover why local grains are easier to digest — revealing a story of tradition, clean farming, and natural abundance.
Have you ever wondered why tourists, Americans specifically, rejoice when they come to Malta or most of Europe and can eat all the pasta and breads without getting sick? What is it about the local wheat that makes it so much easier to digest without all the side effects?
The answer is that the EU has a ban on toxic sprays such as glyphosate and the newer even more durable version of glyphosate called Diquat dibromide, which has also successfully been banned in Malta and throughout most of the EU. There are also dangerous leavening agents used in certain breads abroad that are not allowed to be used here. In Europe where these bans are upheld, we can agree that we all prefer to eat our produce with as little interference as possible. Seasonal and local is always preferred.
When we see wheat fields in Malta, no one has to wear a hazmat suit to stand in the middle of it and participate in the farming of this crop. This alone should be recognised and celebrated.
Since wheat has become such a controversial crop worldwide, I thought I would take this time to share with you what the wheat harvest consists of in Malta where the soil is healthy and the local crops are safe and treated without the use of such chemicals.
Meet Annalisa Schembri, local farmer in iżŻurrieq who inherited a few fields of wheat from her father. She grew up on these fields and continues the tradition of what her family has done for generations; protect their land and grow healthy crops.
The majority, if not all, of the wheat fields across Malta and Gozo are not used for flour making or for pasta making, though the wheat pellets are both able to be used for exactly this purpose. Here, the wheat is harvested to become animal feed. I was surprised to find out that the bales of hay we see across farms were once fields of golden wheat!
To go from a field of wheat to a bale of hay, it requires three specific steps once the
wheat has grown and is ready for harvest. First, a large tractor with a long blade comes to the field. This cuts the wheat straight across making it go from vertical to horizontal. Then it must rest for a few days before the second step is applied. The wheat harvesting occurs in the evenings once they have been in the hot, dry sun all day. There cannot be a single drop of
Day One
dew on any of the wheat for this to work successfully.
The second evening, usually two to three days after the first cutting, brings the same tractor, but with a different attachment to the back called the spider. This machine is designed to sweep across the field, collecting the now-horizontal wheat and gathering it
into long, neat rows. These tidy lines prepare the harvest for its final transformation. The wheat remained in its rows for a solid week before the final tractor could come back and finish the harvest.
In the final stage, the third machine makes its pass; a baler. It compresses the rows of wheat into large, manageable bales of hay. When
the bales of hay drop out of the tractor, they are already tied neatly with two sets of twine and tied neatly in a bow! Once baled, the wheat is ready to be transported to various farms across the island, where it becomes valuable feed for livestock.
The wheat regenerates each year on its own. You don’t need to replant for the next harvest.
