Second Time Around

What is a second iteration? Why is it important?

Don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity.

It's your place in the world; It's your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.

insatiable curiosity

Marking Period 3 begins with the Mae Among The Stars by Roda Ahmed With the celebration of Black History Month in February, the story of Dr Mae Jemison's perseverance and her accomplishments in medicine and science is inspiring and illuminating Jemison is the first African American woman to go to space Students design their own space pack

The last three weeks of Marking Period 3 will be spent on Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code by Laurie Wallmark. Wallmark details the life of Dr. Grace Hopper from childhood to her second retirement from the US Navy.

There is intentionally not a challenge for those last three weeks of Marking Period 3 because the goal is to get your students as immersed in coding or computer programming as possible For some students, coding is completely new to them Allow them to be curious and explore the way young Grace Hopper did When Grace was seven years old, she unscrewed the back of her alarm clock to figure out how to get a clock to run When she couldn’t figure it out, she took apart another alarm clock, and another one, until she had dismantled seven clocks and her mom had to limit her to one

People are naturally curious. Allow your students’ curiosity to flourish even it means patiently letting them struggle through the coding puzzles when you really want to jump in and help.

“When Grace’s mother discovered the many jumbles of clock parts scattered around the house, all she could do was laugh

After all, Grace was just being Grace ”

Pinellas County Schools Mission Statement is to: Educate and Prepare Each Student for College, Career, and Life

The Talent Development program exposes students to a variety of career options via the books in our curriculum The book, Mae Among The Star by Roda Ahmed, delves into Mae Jemison's childhood and her motivation to become an astronaut

Dr Mae Carol Jemison is a physician, engineer, and former astronaut She is the first African American woman to go to space Mae loves to dance She was enrolled in dance classes at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater while in medical school Jemison began at Stanford University at just 16 years old! She holds degrees in chemical engineering, African and African American studies and a Doctorate in Medicine from Cornell University

When Jemison first applied to NASA, she was not selected. NASA had postponed selection due to the Challenger disaster. Mae reapplied in 1987 and got her opportunity to go to space on the STS-47 mission.

Mae served as an astronaut for six years.

"It is also a gigantic undertaking in the foundations of knowledge.”Grace

Dr. Grace Hopper had a lasting legacy in the field of computer science as we know it today As a child with an insatiable curiosity, she loved the challenge of solving problem after problem

Her inquisitiveness and determination led her to earn her Bachelor's degrees in Math and Physics, a master's degree as well as PhD in Mathematics

GRACE HOPPER

Repeatedly, Grace demolished obstacles that impeded her progress. She enlisted in the Navy Reserves after she was rejected for being too old, too young, and too valuable at her position as a math professor at Vassar.

Dr Hopper is responsible for creating the FLOW-MATIC program which later extended to create COBOL, an early high-level programming language still in use today Grace taught computers how to "speak English "

Computer programming wouldn't be the same without Grace Hopper, Queen of Computer Code

In our Talent development scope and sequence, many of our STEM challenges have a 2nd iteration scheduled into the unit.

What is an iteration? How many iterations can we do? What is the value of multiple iterations?

An iteration is simply a repetition; a different form or version of something Multiple iterations in STEM challenges are vital Elementary STEM CON & Beyond founder, Kerry Tracy says, "If you’ve only been doing one-offs, you’re only exploring the tip of the STEM Challenge iceberg; there’s a world of delight & opportunity under the surface!"

Doing multiple iterations is part of the Engineering Design Process because the process is a cycle Here are a few benefits of giving students the chance to redesign and rebuild:

Students get a 2nd chance!

Increased creativity and innovation

Less anxiety during the first build because there'll be a future opportunity to improve
