more than a dare

The nationwide contest to find the star attraction for the 1893 World's Fair was more than a dare to George Washington Gale Ferris Jr, a zealous young civil engineer Ferris was 34 years old when the Ferris Wheel was launched at the fair

Marking Period 4 begins with Mr Ferris and His Wheel by Kathryn Gibbs Davis George Ferris' wheel, originally called the Monster Wheel, was a daring innovation in safety, size, and capacity Yet, it revolved more than 10,000 times, carrying over 1 5 million passengers during the fair and did not need one repair. Students will be building a star attraction/monument that represents their school.

The last four weeks of Marking Period 4 will be spent on Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11 by Brian Floca Floca illustrates the Apollo 11 mission with great detail The story of the flight that landed the first people on the moon is beautifully written in poetic form Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins flew the command module, Columbia, and lunar module, the Eagle, to the moon on July16, 1969 They landed on the moon on July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first person to step on the moon on July 21, 1969 Buzz Aldrin stepped on the moon nineteen minutes after Neil Michael Collins piloted the Columbia while his teammates collected samples and explored. All three returned safely to Earth on July 24, 1969. Students design an intergalactic party hat.

During these four weeks, you and your students will also be preparing a celebration for the last session of Talent Development during the week of May 16th The successful Flight and Return of the Apollo 11 was a celebration of ingenuity and pioneering Your students have spent a whole school year innovating, collaborating, and really persevering and so have you! Please take the time to celebrate all of those accomplishments It's worth it!

In the mid-20th century, the United States was engaged in a Space Race with the Soviet Union President Kennedy expressed a national goal in 1961 to land a man on the moon and return him safely to Earth before the end of the decade. Apollo 11 did exactly that in July 1969.

Apollo 11 was the flight mission that resulted in the first ever moon landing Previous flight missions had orbited the moon but not landed

The Apollo 11 crew consisted of aeronautical engineer, Neil Armstrong, mechanical engineer and fighter pilot, Buzz Aldrin, and test pilot and major general, Michael Collins. It took them 76 hours to reach the moon. Over 400,000 people worked together to achieve this lunar landing.

The crew spent over 21 hours on the surface of the moon They collected 45+ pounds of moon rocks and dust The command module, piloted by Collins, orbited the moon 30 times Close to 25 million Americans watched the televised launch of the Apollo 11 and over 600 million people worldwide followed the mission broadcast

The plaque left behind on the moon during that mission said, “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” They left behind a gold olive branch, a symbol of peace.

Exploration is not a choice, really; it’s an imperative.
IT’S HUMAN NATURE TO STRETCH, TO GO, TO SEE, TO UNDERSTAND.

CELEBRATE TALENT!

THE MORE YOU PRAISE AND

celebrate your life

The last week of the Talent Curriculum is a Talent Celebration! I love celebrations! I love to celebrate the big things, but I especially love to celebrate the little things Celebrations in the moment are even better Yes, I'm one of those teachers that tells students to kiss their brain when they demonstrate strong thinking. Celebrating is a way to practice gratitude.

Take a breath to show your students that you value them and yourself. You value them for who they are, not what they do or don't do The Talent Celebration is not meant to only celebrate the best innovations, presentations, or work.

Give students time to share what they've enjoyed about their class, their teacher, their partners. Let them share memories. You share memories. If you have pictures, make a slideshow and play it in the background while you all celebrate.

Share with your students your accomplishments What are you proud of yourself for accomplishing as a person, a teacher, a parent, a friend, this school year? What has brought meaning to you in spending this year of Talent with your kiddos?

The celebration does not need to be elaborate. It can be as simple as round robin sharing, playing some games, and each student enjoying a popsicle or one cookie Make it what you want Celebrate the goodness Celebrate the relationships Celebrate your time together

Dr. Brene Brown defines gratitude this way. "Gratitude is an emotion that reflects our deep appreciation for what we value, what brings meaning to our lives, and what makes us feel connected to ourselves and others " the more there is
