Feeding our growing society involves various actors and their interconnected activities: from plant breeders who develop new plant varieties, to seed producers and distributors who make quality seed accessible to farmers who grow the food we eat.

The World Seed Partnership, composed of five partner-organizations, supports countries by providing guidance on policies and frameworks towards achieving food security and economic development in the agricultural sector.

The OECD Seed Schemes

The OECD Seed Schemes facilitate the movement of high quality agricultural seeds across borders by harmonising varietal identity and purity standards and certification procedures. This harmonisation helps to improve domestic production, develop export markets, and provides farmers, plant breeders and authorities with reassurance as new markets open up. As such, many participating countries have now adopted OECD rules and regulations as part of their national laws and basis of their national seed varietal certification systems.

International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants UPOV’s mission is to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection (PVP), with the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society.

New plant varieties are an important basis for farmers to be able to provide sustainable food security and economic development, including in developing countries.

ISTA International Seed Testing Association ISTA members work globally together to achieve uniformity in seed quality through producing globally agreed rules for seed sampling and testing, accrediting laboratories, promoting research, providing training, and disseminating knowledge in various ways.

ISTA is governed by the governments of its member countries/distinct economies facilitating seed trade globally, contributing to food security.

The International Seed Federation (ISF) is the voice of the international seed industry, representing the interests of those active in the research, breeding, production and marketing of seed of agricultural, horticultural and ornamental plant species. Today, ISF represents around 60 national member associations and 7500 seed companies worldwide.

WFO World Farmers’ Organisation WFO represents more than 1.5 billion farmers across all agricultural sectors, with national organisations as members in each continent.

It brings the farmers' voice into the global political debate on the most relevant topics for the world farming community. This includes ensuring farmers can make informed and aware seeds choices in the framework of sustainable food systems.
