I have experienced Chopin’s music throughout my extensive piano studies and I immediately – and always – felt very emotionally involved with his music, to the extent that I can say that he has defined me as a musician and, later on, as a cellist.

Chopin said that he loved only one instrument other than the piano: the cello. I feel so blessed that he left us, as the exception to his otherwise exclusively pianistic output, three chamber works of great quality and maturity for cello and piano (which, together with the juvenile Trio and one cycle of songs, form his entire chamber music production). I feel very strongly that I can channel my playing and my personality best through them.

These works were written partly thanks to Auguste Franchomme, a well-known French concert cellist and professor at the Conservatoire Nationale de Paris. He was the most intimate of Chopin’s friends during his years in Paris. They composed together the Gran Duo Concertante; Chopin dedicated to him his Sonata in G minor, Op. 65, which they performed together, including at Chopin’s memorable last Paris concert on 18 February 1848 at Pleyel’s; and Franchomme rewrote the cello part of the Polonaise brillante, as well as transposing a huge amount of Chopin’s piano pieces for cello and piano. When we discovered Pleyel’s “double piano” of 1898, we fell in love with its full, rich sound and felt convinced it would bring us closer to Chopin’s sound-world. Although this is not a “period performance”, Chopin favoured Pleyel’s pianos, and the warmth of this unique instrument’s sound seemed an ideal choice for this repertoire.

As for Franchomme, while researching his compositions – other than transcriptions of Chopin’s works – we immediately perceived that their close relationship was musically rooted in the influence of bel canto, and the operatic treatment of their melodies. We found a variety of unedited and unperformed fantaisies, souvenirs, variations, and piéces de concert on themes of Italian, French and German operas. If on the one hand the transcriptions and elaborations of Chopin’s music testify to Franchomme’s admiration for his overly gifted friend – while perhaps losing some of their artistic value compared to the originals of the master – on the other hand, Franchomme’s own output seemed to us like a pearl in an unopened oyster (in this case, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, where we could find the first editions of these otherwise out-ofprint works), and we consider them to be absolutely worth publishing and recording.

Beatriz Blanco has been praised by critics and audiences alike for her passion, musicality, sensitivity, and technical mastery. The quality and depth of her sound and stage presence have been evident since her debut with the Castilla y León Symphonic Orchestra in 2004.

She was awarded the first prizes in competitions including the Kiefel Hablitzel Foundation 2015 in Bern, and the Austrian Würdigungspreis 2013, the “Primer Palau” Palau in Barcelona, and the Jeunesses Musicales. Beatriz also earned the second prize at the Rahn Musikpreis Foundation in Switzerland, third prize in the Liezen International Cello Competition, Austria, and the “Young Artist Award” from the Foundation Bernhard Greenhause, California (USA).

Her solo career includes performances with the Symphonieorchester Basel, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Argovia Philarmonic, Radio and Television Spanish Orchestra (ORTVE), Málaga Philarmonic Orchestra, Castilla y León Symphonic Orchestra (OSCyL), Orchestra Sinfónica del Vallés (OSV). She has performed in major European concert halls including the Theatre des Champs Elysees (Paris), Victoria Hall (Geneva), Stadt Casino (Basel), Solitär (Salzburg), Tonhalle (Zürich), Lingotto (Torino), Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Palau de la Música and L’Auditori in Barcelona, and Palau de las Arts in Valencia.

Since 2008, she has been delving into the cello and piano duo repertoire together with Italian pianist Federico Bosco. They won the first prize at the SalieriZinetti International Chamber Music Competition, 2015, in Verona, Italy, with engagements across Europe for the upcoming seasons.

Beatriz plays a C. Pierray cello, (Paris, 1720), thanks to the August Pickhardt Foundation.

Federico Bosco studied piano with Claudio Voghera, Filippo Gamba and Adrian Oetiker, and conducting with Rodolfo Fischer. He has performed with various orchestras including the Basler Sinfonieorchester and Schweizer Jugend Sinfonieorchester, and performs as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe, most notably at the Granada Festival and the Salzburg Chamber Music Festival.

In 2013 he made his debut at the Lucerne Festival. He worked as a teacher and musical assistant in Germany and is currently working as a répétiteur at the Hochschule in Basel.

J’ai joué la musique de Chopin tout au long de mes études avancées de piano et ai toujours été profondément touchée par sa musique, au point où je peux dire qu’il m’a définie en tant que musicienne et, plus tard, violoncelliste.

Chopin prétendait n’aimer qu’un seul autre instrument que le piano : le violoncelle. C’est une véritable privilège qu’il nous ait laissé, comme l’exception à son œuvre exclusivement pianistique, trois œuvres de chambre de grande qualité et maturité pour violoncelle et piano (qui, avec le Trio précoce et un cycle de chants, forment l’intégralité de son répertoire de musique de chambre). Ces pièces m’ont permis de mieux canaliser mon jeu et ma personnalité.

Ces œuvres ont été écrites en partie grâce à Auguste Franchomme, un violoncelliste français réputé et professeur au Conservatoire National de Paris, et l’ami le plus intime de Chopin au cours de ses années parisiennes. Ils ont composé ensemble le Grand Duo Concertant ; Chopin lui dédia sa Sonate en sol mineur, Op.65, qu’ils jouèrent ensemble, notamment durant le dernier concert mémorable de Chopin à Paris, le 18 Février 1848 dans les salons Pleyel. Franchomme a réécrit la partie de violoncelle de la Polonaise brillante, ainsi que la transposition de nombreuses pièces pour piano de Chopin pour violoncelle et piano. Lorsque nous avons découvert le « piano double » de Pleyel de 1898, nous sommes tombés amoureux de sa sonorité pleine et riche et sommes devenus convaincus qu’il nous rapprocherait de l’univers sonore de Chopin. Bien que cette performance ne se veuille pas une reconstitution historique, Chopin privilégiait les pianos de Pleyel, et la chaleur sonore de cet instrument unique semblait un choix idéal pour ce répertoire.

Quant à Franchomme, tout en recherchant ses compositions – autre que des transcriptions d’œuvres de Chopin – nous avons immédiatement perçu que leur relation étroite était musicalement enracinée dans l’influence du bel canto, et le traitement lyrique de leurs mélodies. Nous avons trouvé une variété de Fantaisies, Souvenirs, Variations, et Pièces de concert inédites et non exécutées, sur des thèmes d’opéras italiens, français et allemands. Si les transcriptions et les élaborations sur la musique de Chopin témoignent de l’admiration de Franchomme pour son ami surdoué – et perdent peut-être une partie de leur valeur artistique par rapport aux originaux du maître – l’œuvre de Franchomme nous a en outre semblé telle une perle dans une huître non ouverte (en l’occurrence, la Bibliothèque nationale de France, où nous avons trouvé les premières éditions de ces partitions désormais épuisées), et nous sommes persuadés qu’elles méritent publication et enregistrement.

Sa carrière de soliste comprend notamment des performances avec le Symphonieorchester de Bâle, le Musikkollegium de Winterthur, l’Argovia Philharmonic, l’Orchestre de la Radio et Télévision Espagnole (ORTVE), l’Orchestre Philarmonique de Málaga, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Castille-et-León (OSCyL) et l’Orchestra Sinfónica del Vallés (OSV). Elle s’est produite dans des salles de concerts majeures à travers l’Europe, dont le Théâtre des Champs Elysées (Paris), le Hall Victoria (Genève), Casino de Stadt (Bâle), Solitär (Salzbourg), Tonhalle (Zürich), Lingotto (Turin), Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Palau de la Música et Auditori de Barcelone, et Palau de las Arts à Valence.

Depuis 2008, elle s’est plongée dans le répertoire pour violoncelle et piano en duo avec le pianiste italien Federico Bosco. Ils ont remporté le premier prix au Concours international de musique de chambre Salieri-Zinetti 2015, à Vérone en Italie, et des engagements à travers l’Europe sont prévus pour les saisons à venir.

Beatriz joue sur un violoncelle C. Pierray (Paris, 1720), grâce à la Fondation Août Pickhardt.

Federico Bosco a étudié le piano avec Claudio Voghera, Filippo Gamba et Adrian Oetiker et la direction d’orchestre avec Rodolfo Fischer. Il a joué avec de nombreux orchestres (Basler Sinfonieorchester, Schweizer Jugend Sinfonieorchester) et se produit dans des récitals et ensembles de musique de chambre à travers l’Europe (dont le Festival de Grenade et le Festival de Musique de Chambre de Salzbourg).

Il a fait ses débuts au Festival de Lucerne en 2013. Il a travaillé comme coach et assistant musical en Allemagne et travaille maintenant comme accompagnateur à la Hochschule de Bâle.

DEU Durch meine umfangreichen Klavierstudien bin ich mit Chopins Musik in Kontakt gekommen und war unmittelbar – und beständig – von seiner Musik immens ergriffen, und zwar soweit, dass ich sagen kann, dass es mich zu der Musikerin, und später auch, Cellistin gemacht hat, die ich heute bin.

Chopin sagte einst, dass er nur ein Instrument neben dem Klavier liebt: das Violoncello. Es ist ein Segen, dass er als Ausnahme zu seinem sonst exklusiv pianistischen Werk, uns drei Kammermusikwerke von großartiger Qualität und Reife für Violoncello und Klavier (welche, zusammen mit dem jugendlichem Trio und einem Liederzyklus, seine gesamte Kammermusikproduktion formen) hinterlassen hat. Ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass ich in diesen Werken meiner Interpretation und meiner Persönlichkeit Ausdruck verleihen kann.

Zum Teil wurden diese Werke im Dank an Auguste Franchomme, einem wohlbekannten französischen Konzertcellisten und Professor des Conservatoire Nationale de Paris, verfasst. Er zählte zu Chopins innigsten Freunden während seiner Zeit in Paris. Sie arbeiteten gemeinsam am Gran Duo Concertante; und Chopin widmete ihm seine Sonate in g-Moll, Op. 65, welche sie ebenfalls gemeinsam aufführten, einschließlich Chopins denkwürdigem letzten Pariser Konzert am 18. Februar 1848 im Salon Pleyel. Franchomme schrieb den Part des Violoncellos in der Polonaise brilliante um, und bearbeitete ebenso eine große Anzahl von Chopins Klavierstücken für Violoncello und Klavier. Als wir Pleyels „Doppelklavier“ aus dem Jahre 1898 entdeckten, verliebten wir uns in seinen vollen, wie auch reichen Ton und waren überzeugt, dass es uns Chopins Klangwelt näher bringt. Auch wenn es sich hierbei nicht um eine „Aufführung gemäß der Epoche“ handelt, war Chopins bevorzugtes Klavier von Pleyel und die Wärme dieses einzigartigen Instrumentenklangs eine ideale Wahl für dieses Repertoire.

Was Franchomme betrifft, haben wir während der Recherche seiner Kompositionen – im Gegensatz zu seinen Transkriptionen von Chopins Werken – sofort erkannt, dass deren enge Beziehung musikalisch im Einfluss des bel canto und in der opernhaften Bearbeitung der Melodien begründet liegt. Wir fanden eine Reihe von unbearbeiteten und noch nicht aufgeführten Fantaisies, Souvenirs, Variations, und Piéces de concert über Themen der italienischen, französischen und deutschen Oper. Wenn einerseits die Transkriptionen und Ausarbeitungen von Chopins Musik Franchommes Bewunderung für seinen so überaus talentierten Freund bezeugen – während diese möglicherweise im Vergleich zu den Originalen des Meisters an künstlerischem Wert verloren – so schien andererseits Franchommes eigene Produktion sprichwörtlich die Perle in der ungeöffneten Auster zu sein (in diesem Falle fanden wir in der französischen Nationalbibliothek die Erstausgabe der ansonsten vergriffenen Werke) und erachten sie daher als unbedingt wert veröffentlicht und aufgeführt zu werden.

Schon früh in seiner Laufbahn entwickelte sich Chopins Bindung

Das charmante Duo concertant sur un motif d’Anna Bolena stellt eine weitere Zusammenarbeit dar, diesmal zwischen Franchomme und dem irischen Komponisten und Pianisten George Alexander Osborne (1806-1893). Veröffentlicht im Jahre 1841, beruht das Werk auf einer Melodie aus Donizettis Oper Anna Bolena (1830).

Das Instrument, das in dieser Aufnahme zum Einsatz kam, ist ein „Doppelklavier“ von Pleyel aus 1898. Der von Chopin und vielen anderen geschätzte Pleyel experimentierte mit dieser Konstruktion in den 1890er Jahren und schuf dabei ein 2,5 Meter langes Instrument mit zwei Klaviaturen, welche jeweils am gegenüberliegendem Ende positioniert wurden. Die zwei Klaviere sind in einem Korpus beherbergt, sodass jedes von ihnen eine eigene Garnitur an Saiten, Pedalen und Mechanik hat.

Beatriz Blanco wurde für ihre Leidenschaft, Musikalität, Sensibilität und ihr technisches Können von der Kritik, als auch vom Publikum gepriesen. Die Qualität und Tiefe ihres Klanges und ihrer Bühnenpräsenz sind seit ihrem Debüt mit dem Castilla y León Sinfonieorchester im Jahre 2004 unübersehbar.

Ausgezeichnet mit dem ersten Preis bei zahlreichen Wettbewerben, gewann sie unter anderem den Kiefel Hablitzel Preis 2015 in Bern, den Würdigungspreis 2013 vom österreichischen Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung, den “Primer Palau” in Barcelona und den Preis der Jeunesse Musicales in Spanien. Desweiteren erhielt Beatriz den zweiten Platz beim Rahn Musikpreis in der Schweiz, den dritten Preis beim internationalen Wettbewerb für Violoncello in Liezen (Österreich) und den “Young Artist Award” von der Bernhard Greenhause-Stiftung in Kalifornien (USA).

Ihre Karriere als Solistin umfasst mittlerweile Auftritte mit dem Symphonieorchester aus Basel, dem Musikkollegium Winterthur, dem Aargauer Symphonie Orchester, dem RTVE Orchester, dem Philharmonischen Orchester aus Malaga, dem Castilla y León Sinfonieorchester, und dem Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès.
