Charles Wuorinen In 1970 Wuorinen became the youngest composer at that time to win the Pulitzer Prize (for the electronic work Time’s Encomium). The Pulitzer and the MacArthur Fellowship are just two among many awards, fellowships and other honors to have come his way. He has written more than 265 compositions to date in all genres from unaccompanied solos to large orchestral and operatic works (Haroun and The Sea of Stories, Brokeback Mountain). Wuorinen is the author of Simple Composition, used by composition students throughout the world. He has also been active as performer, an excellent pianist and a distinguished conductor of his own works as well as other recent repertoire. Wuorinen is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Wuorinen war 1970 der jüngste Komponist, der jemals einen Pulitzer-Preis erhielt (für das elektronische Werk Time’s Encomium). Neben dem Pulitzer-Preis und auch einem MacArthur Stipendium erhielt er viele andere Auszeichnungen, Preise und Stipendien. Er verfasste mehr als 265 Kompositionen in allen Gattungen von Solostücken bis zu großen Orchesterwerken und Opern (Haroun and The Sea of Stories und Brokeback Mountain). Wuorinen ist der Autor des Buches Simple Composition, das von Kompositionsstudenten weltweit gebraucht wird. Er betätigt sich auch als Interpret. Er ist ein exzellenter Pianist und ein ausgezeichneter Dirigent, der sowohl seine eigenen Werke wie auch neueres Repertoire anderer Komponisten aufführt. Wuorinen ist Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Letters sowie der American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
