With a planned launch date of April 22, 2023, our Academy will commence with a ½ day session highlighting characteristics of leadership and providing insight into what leadership looks like across various community sectors. Several of our region’s top business, government and civic professionals have agreed to participate as facilitators in our program and share their insight about leadership. Some of the key elements of the program include exploring the art of leadership, introducing participants to local leaders, providing awareness of critical economic drivers in the City of Oceanside, and offering sessions on specific community sectors. Our program will launch with a half day leadership workshop and follow-up sessions will occur over the following seven weeks with topics including Entrepreneurship, Health Care, Tourism/Hospitality, Military, Municipal Government, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and Non-Profits. Participants will also be exposed to the critical role that local educational institutions play in supporting each of these sectors. A graduation reception will follow the seven weeks of breakout sessions.

Chamber Focuses on Building Oceanside's Future Leaders
As the Chamber developed its 5-Year strategic plan last year it was clear that the success of our organization and the City itself will depend on a strong pipeline of future business and civic leaders. To address this need, a small group of Chamber staff and board members have taken on the ambitious task of developing our first Oceanside Leadership Academy.

3) You and your company will last longer – Need a local example? This year, Jazzercise turns 53, and we are still growing. In addition to 8,000 franchisees teaching 32,000 classes a week worldwide, we launched Jazzercise On Demand just prior to the pandemic, and plan to top last year’s generated revenue of $73 million. Maintaining a clear focus on staying healthy has helped us to creatively outlast five-plus decades of recessions, booms, busts, and more industry fads than I can count. The old adage “your heath is your wealth” is still around—and so are we--because it’s true!
A better, healthier body makes you a better boss or employee – Dozens of studies confirm that regular exercise, 20 to 30 minutes a day, reduces stress; improves sleep, creativity, and decision-making; provides a greater sense of control and mastery; and renews strength, stamina, and vigor. On the medical side, it lowers your risk of obesity, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and some cancers. So why wouldn’t you make regular exercise a top priority?
Editor's note to Readers: Judi offers a host of other insights into the benefits of exercise in Chapter 13, “Make the Body-Mind-Spirit Connection,” of her national best-seller Building a Business with a Beat.

1) It pays to prioritize your health – When researchers tracked the stock performance of companies who prioritize executive and employee health and well-being, they found–over a 14-yearperiod–that company stock values appreciated 325% compared to the S&P’s average appreciation of 105%. Quite simply, healthier executives and employees have more stamina and productivity; fewer absences, injuries, and benefit claims; and greater optimism. All of which will improve your bottom line.

In the thrall of a business start-up, or the thick of managing your company’s growth or expansion, the correlation between your health and that of your business may not be top of mind. But let me give you three key reasons why it should be:

Crews will be able to practice forcible entry on a door prop on the first floor. There is a standpipe that can practice pressurizing a building’s fire system and personnel can practice deploying their fire hoses off the stairwell connections. The rooftop of the facility has a hard-top awning and anchored bolts that allow for rappelling down the side of the building.

On July 24th, 2022 the Oceanside Fire Department held a dedication ceremony for the newly finished Everett Stephens Training Tower. The new, state-ofthe-art training tower replaces the previous training tower that was removed in 2016. The new tower is located at the Oceanside Fire Department’s training facility at 110 Jones Road. Thanks to Measure X funding the new facility will prepare future OFD firefighters for generations to come.
Measure X Funding Supports New Fire Training Tower
The training tower was dedicated and named after Everett Stephens. Stephens became one of Oceanside’s first full-time firefighters around 1940, and served on the department for 29 years. He was known as a skilled professional and dedicated his time to serving and protecting the community. Stephens also is recognized as the department’s first Training Officer.
The four-story facility has three interior rooms dedicated to live fire burning. The walls and ceiling are covered in specialized ceramic tiles that withstand smoke and fire conditions and temperatures above 2000 degrees F. Each floor has a distinct layout that allows firefighters to practice search and rescue techniques, hose advancement and fire extinguishment.
The new tower replaces a two-story tower that was constructed from stacked shipping containers.
Best of Oceanside Magazine | 7www.oceansidechamber.com | Fall 2022
The Everett Stephens Fire Training Tower will serve not only new OFD recruits and the entire department, but the facility will be available for regional public safety training use as well. The tower was long overdue but thanks to Measure X funding, the project finally became reality. The Oceanside Fire Department would like to thank the citizens for their support. It is anticipated that the Fire Training Center will resume hosting the annual OFD Open House this October. The new tower will loom large over that event!
A: Since 1921, McKenna is a 5th generation, familyowned business. Ahead of his time and known for this innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, John Bernard “JB” McKenna started servicing boilers in Southern California in 1887. Because of a need for local manufacturing in the area, JB McKenna launched McKenna Boiler in 1921, a boiler manufacturing and service shop in Downtown
McKenna Boiler, an Oceanside Chamber of Commerce member, may be new to Oceanside, but they have been in business for more than 100 years. Steam from boilers is used in almost every production line. McKenna Boiler executives Hali Krista and Corbin Smith tell us more.
A Boiling Hot Business, Q & A with McKenna Boiler 2601 Industry Street, Oceanside
Courtney Smith, Board Member; Corbin Smith, COO; Gaven Smith, CEO and Tyson Smith, CFO pose in front of one of the boilers that is made in Oceanside at McKenna Boiler. The Smiths are part of a five-generation business that manufactures boilers for local and national companies.
Q: Tell us about McKenna’s Boiler’s beginning.
MADE IN OCEANSIDE
A: In simple terms, there are multiple types of boilers, you have hot water boilers, low-pressure steam boilers and high-pressure steam boilers. Depending on what your process requires with your company, that type of boiler will be used. You have an ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) code pressure vessel that is filled with water and then you apply a heating source ie. a gas fired burner to that pressure vessel. These boilers have special safety controls added them. The burner runs to heat up the vessel and then you have hot water or steam, like our water heater at home, but on a much larger scale. Once you have the hot water or steam at the desired temperature it is distributed through the plant, hotel, brewery, or whatever process is requiring this steam or hot water.
A: Being a 5th generation family company with over 100 years of experience in our field, an aspect of what my brothers and I do is out of family pride and loyalty, but the real reason why we wake up early every morning and keep coming back to work is for our employees that work tirelessly for our company and our customers. We strive to be the best employer, so that we can attract the best talent out there. If we have the best talent, then we can offer our customers the best quality products and services available on the market. And as we deliver the best products and services, our communities will benefit because our boilers are the backbone of manufacturing in our communities.
Q: How does a boiler work?
Los Angeles. The company quickly gained a reputation for designing quality products that perform under harsh manufacturing conditions and began to grow by word-of-mouth recommendations. In the 1930’s, Guy Smith, a relative of McKenna, joined the business and brought in his own expertise and knowledge, designing and developing the innovative Scotch Marine style units that are still used today.
Q: Why do you think that advanced manufacturing is such a draw for people entering into the workforce or changing careers?
Q: When did McKenna Boiler relocate to Oceanside and why?
Q: Why do you do what you do?
A: At McKenna Boiler, we value passion and integrity which guides our team to deliver quality boiler products and services. We are a forward-thinking manufacturer who offers turnkey solutions for our clientele. Work with the latest and greatest of technologies in our industry to deliver efficient and reliable equipment that handles all steam and hot water needs. Individuals joining the boiler industry enter a profession with tremendous growth potential and unique learning opportunities. There is no trade school available to learn how to be a boilermaker or service technician. It is mostly on-the-job experience. Once this foundational knowledge is set, professionals of the industry are highly valued.
Q: Besides manufacturing the boilers, tell us about how you maintain them.
A: To maintain a boiler, you must have a boiler
A: McKenna expanded into the San Diego territory in 2019. While our Los Angeles facility allowed the company to grow for nearly 100 years, a larger factory became a necessity as we began to increase both the size and quantity of our products along with growing our support staff for current and future company expansion.
Q: Which businesses and organizations in the Oceanside area use McKenna Boiler?
A: Most manufacturing utilizes boilers, from your food processing, textile businesses, hotels, breweries, government buildings and military facilities.

service professional perform routine inspections and quarterly tune ups to ensure that all systems are working properly, up to code and to catch any potential areas of concern that may need to be addressed. These services maximize the efficiency and extend the lifespan of boiler systems. Efficiency equals saving money! So staying up to date on maintenance turns into a short term and long term investment in your equipment!

Our goal is to be that place for decades to come.”
Oside Management Group partnered with Sudberry Properties to bring the arena project to life, and proudly selected Watkins Landmark Construction as their building partner. Icon Architectural Group designed the arena.

The “hobby” quickly outgrew their garage and, in 2013, the brothers relocated to Vista, CA. By 2017, their beer was being distributed by Karl Strauss, Northern California’s Gyser Distribution, and Oregon’s Upstanding Distribution. They added a private event space, The Wood Shed, and an onsite canning line. In 2020, Booze Brothers opened an Oceanside tasting room and by 2021, claimed a second event space,The Vistonian, in downtown Vista and a third taproom at The Mill in Fallbrook, CA. The City of Oceanside is situated around the mouth of the San Luis Rey River, where it meets the Pacific Ocean. Incorporated in 1888, Oceanside is the oldest city in North County, San Diego and much of its history remains visible today in the urban landscape Locations like the Pier, the Strand, South Oceanside neighborhoods, and the small craft harbor, as well as, other notable sites, are remnants from a history of growth dating back to the early 1900s.

While familiar and historical locations make up the very fabric of Oceanside’s city and culture, they also inform how the city adapts by dictating where new structures can be built to cultivate the greatest impact to changing environmental conditions. For example, the South Jetty was initially constructed to open the mouth of the San Luis Rey river and supplement flood control Holding the importance of Oceanside’s history alongside responses to rising seas is critical to the resilience of Oceanside today and into the

the City Council has begun to address rising seas and the preservation of Oceanside’s iconic beaches and waves through a sand retention and nourishment project To understand a bit more about the history of Oceanside’s coast, we’re diving into the South Jetty, whose location at the San Luis River mouth is not just a reflection of the past but what might be possible in the future.

Additionally, because these consistently rideable waves attract surfers from all over, surf competitions are held at South Harbor Beach throughout the year A wide range of ages and skill levels of competitive surfers have had the opportunity to surf competitions off the San Luis Rey River groin for decades. The San Luis Rey River groin is a shoreline structure that was initially constructed in 1961 as a short jetty (396 feet) to keep sand from flowing into the river inlet. Its purpose was to stabilize the river mouth in conjunction with the Oceanside Harbor construction In 1968, the structure was lengthened to approximately 919 feet

SHORELINE STRUCTURES
BENEFITS FOR SURFING
Surfers throughout Southern California travel to Oceanside to surf world class waves that break off the shoreline structure While sandbars typically move and shift along the coastline, the structure creates consistent, rideable breaks on its north and south sides.
The San Luis Rey River groin is teeming with marine life! Best viewed at low tide, sedentary organisms like colonies of sea anemones, oysters, barnacles, and pacific mussels are visible in and on the rocks, as well as, more active invertebrates like spiny lobster and two spot octopuses. Young people scamper across the rocks, searching for the crabs that call the groin home. Bat stars and ochre sea stars are making a reappearance here, too Fishermen routinely catch fish such as opaleye, Corvina, seabass, and the occasional halibut Invertebrates densely populated the sand to the north and south of the groin, making pickings suitable for the seabirds that forage on our
Tshorelineheseorganisms
Shoreline structures that are built perpendicular to the coast have the potential to alter sand flow. Since construction, Oceanside's "South Jetty" has trapped sediment pushed up from south swells and maintained sediment placed at Harbor beach decades ago By this accord, this shoreline structure that was once built to keep the San Luis Rey River flowing, now serves a dual purpose of maintaining the sand on Harbor Beach that was placed over half a century ago, with no required sand nourishment
The vast benefits afforded by the South Jetty are often unsung and overlooked The structure maintains the sandy beach that stretches to the north, provides rocky habitat for intertidal species usually found in tide pools, keeps the San Luis Rey mouth relatively open, and of course, supplies north Oceanside with a consistent summer surf break
At the mouth of the San Luis Rey River, is a pile of rocks extending out into the ocean, known by locals as the Harbor "South Jetty " The structure, actually considered a groin, provides an array of benefits to Oceanside’s community On any given day, surfers of all ages and skill levels can be seen enjoying the waves, on both the North and South ends. Beachgoers relax along the broad sandy beach that benefits from sand retention maintained by the structure Fishermen spend hours on the rocks of the structure searching for their next catch Families and young people explore the rocks, chasing crabs and viewing all the marine life that call this shoreline structure home.

Resilience:
A shoreline structure is a physical object that is man made, built, into the shoreline to preserve the coast
Following the initiation of the Beach Sand Feasibility Study, the City of Oceanside created a brand new position to address coastal erosion concerns and sea level rise and build resiliency against all these environmental stressors. The new Coastal Zone Administrator, Jayme Timberlake, hails from a similar role with the City of Encinitas and brings a myriad of nature-based solutions to our coastal erosion issues. Before working with the City of Encinitas, she worked in environmental analysis, permitting, and habitat restoration for over 15 years. To be sure, she will be incorporating her diverse experience in coastal management into tangible, thoughtful, and collaborative solutions that provide countless benefits to surfers, beachgoers, homeowners, and of course, the critters.
Sediment:
An artificial reef is a manmade structure that may mimic some of the characteristics of a natural reef. Artificial reefs may be built to enhance marine habitat, improve or build a surf break, or encourage the dissipation of wave energy thereby protecting landward structures from coastal storms and wave run up
Resilience on the coast is the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses, and systems to survive, adapt, and grow when facing chronic stresses and acute shocks Coastal shocks are experiences, such as extreme flooding events from king tides. Coastal stressors are experiences, such as the long term overtopping of a beach roadway
Sand or Beach Nourishment:
Groin:
A groin is a coastal engineering structure, usually composed of rock, that is constructed perpendicular to the shoreline with the intent of retarding the loss of a beach and widening it by trapping passing sand Some are built solid to be impervious to sand flow and others are built to be permeable, to allow appreciable quantities of sand to flow through Jetty:
A jetty is a coastal engineering structure that projects out from land, usually built from quarried rock, with the intent of maintaining a river mouth or harbor opening, protecting the channel or mouth from shoaling or filling in with drifting sand

Getting ready for the holiday season? Holiday shopping can create a lot of waste. Some of this can be recycled, but not all! From the wrapping paper and tape to the plastic packaging many gifts come in, it’s time to rewrite the guide to holiday shopping! We are going to explore three Zero Waste strategies for gifts that replace the typical idea of purchasing items at a big box store. Not only are these ideas planet-friendly, they are fun and easy too! First, give an “experience” as a gift. There are a variety of exciting Oceanside adventures to go on. Second, try making your gifts. A Zero-Waste recipe in the kitchen is a creative option, be sure to source your ingredients locally! If making gifts isn’t up your alley, and an experience gift isn’t suitable, don’t worry! Last, we explore Oceanside businesses that promote sustainability through ZeroWaste tactics. The idea is to shop at small, local stores that demonstrate this throughout their business model.

Whether it be an experience gift, creating something from scratch, or shopping sustainably, we can all agree that its not always the gift that matters. It’s the thought, care, and story behind it. All the aforementioned businesses are part of the City’s Green Oceanside Business Network. These members are recognized as environmental leaders who took the extra effort to incorporate sustainable practices into their business model. Make this season unforgettable by jumping off the “bandwagon” and taking the outlined approaches to holiday shopping. Lastly, don’t forget that if you must wrap your gift, do so using newspaper or magazines. Another option is to put the gift(s) in a re-usable bag, this is like getting two gifts in one! Or, opt out of the whole wrapping scene by surprising them with quick turn from around the back, or popping out with it in hand. Consider these fun and new ways to give gifts and I bet you will stand out!
locally for years. In addition, they source their ingredients from local providers including seafood caught in San Diego, microgreens from Dedo Verde in Carlsbad, truffle oil from Vista, strawberries grown in Carlsbad, and of course produce from the Oceanside Farmer’s Market. At the end of the day, these experiences are a way to grow memories and not trash. Remember, opportunities are endless in this category and Oceanside has a lot to offer.
Still looking to get out and go holiday shopping? Shop at small stores in Oceanside that utilize all of their “waste” and source materials locally. Rais Case is a collective retail/studio space in Oceanside with a mission “To make quality goods that create community and support well-being” says Owner Julie Rais. They design bags and more that serve not just one purpose, but many for our busy lives. Furthermore, all bags are designed, manufactured and shipped from San Diego, CA. Put this on your list of shops this season to find the perfect gift for that special someone, while taking in all the good they do for the planet and our community.
Do you like to cook or bake? If so, making a gift from scratch is right up your alley! A favorite of the City’s Green Oceanside Team is to gift special foods from Zero Waste recipes. Be sure to include the recipe so the idea can be passed on to more people and further generations. When shopping for ingredients, do so locally. The Oceanside Farmers Market takes place day and night every Thursday and has many options for fresh produce, fruits, and more. You will find many vendors excited to share how they are doing their part in sustainable farming and agriculture. Once you have your locally sourced components, check out the Green Oceanside Kitchen website at

Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) began providing exhibitions and public programs in 1997. Since then the museum has become an important creative hub bringing people together to explore the art and stories of Southern California artists. OMA's exhibitions, events, and educational programs are designed to make deeper connections between artists in our city, the San Diego cultural community, and the greater Southern California region. Now in its 25th Anniversary year, the museum is an important destination along the cultural corridor between Los Angeles and San Diego.
Oceanside is a burgeoning city where those who live here or come to visit are engaged in a unique cultural, visual, performing, and culinary arts scene—where people enjoy theater, museums, galleries, festivals, and many other culturally inspired events.

Spending hundreds of hours on a single piece, painting everything by hand in traditional techniques, Chiaro obsessively renders her subjects, caught in moments when they are open and expressive. Through her chosen genre, Magical Realism, Chiaro fuses reality with imagination to create a visceral new “world” for the subject to dwell in and the viewer to observe.

ABOUT THE OCEANSIDE NAVIGATION CENTER
The Oceanside Navigation Center serves as part of a larger system of services being developed by the San Diego Rescue Mission, including a collaborative approach between the private and public sectors to address homelessness in San Diego County. On August 1, 2022, the SDRM and the Lucky Duck Foundation convened 12 regional mayors to begin the discussion of solutions that can help provide those experiencing homelessness with the help they need.
As we watch the encampments in our neighborhoods grow, the sad reality is that homelessness in San Diego has become a humanitarian crisis. And, North County has not been spared.
“We are committed to working with our partners to change the state of homelessness throughout San
Diego County, and the Oceanside Navigation Center is our latest regional initiative to help us reach that goal,” said the San Diego Rescue Mission President and CEO Donnie Dee. “By opening Oceanside’s new facility by year’s end and working together with the City’s police department and homeless outreach team, we can create a better future for individuals who find themselves living on the streets through our many resources, programs, and dedicated case managers.”
To help get people safely off the streets, the San Diego Rescue Mission (SDRM) is collaborating with the City of Oceanside to open the city’s first-ever, year-round shelter for individuals and families experiencing Thehomelessness.SanDiego

The city has set aside approximately 400 acres of El Corazon for parks, open space and civic uses. Sudberry Properties was selected in 2011 as the master developer of commercially designated land within El Corazon.
Contemporary-styled apartments, ranging from 691 to 1,440 square feet, will feature stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, wood-style flooring and in-unit washers and dryers. There are 11 floorplan configurations, all featuring an outdoor deck, balcony or patio.
Colton Sudberry, president of Sudberry Properties, said Luma at El Corazon will be comprised of 23 threestory buildings with a mix of 113 one-bedroom, 120 two-bedroom and 35 three-bedroom apartments, surrounding a stylish recreation center and pool. The leasing center and the first phase of apartments are anticipated to open in fall 2023. Amenities at Luma will include a beautifully furnished club room with a demonstration kitchen and adjoining covered patio, a conference room and an indoor/
outdoor fitness center. The pool and spa area includes lounges and barbecue facilities. Colorful Mediterranean landscaping will complement the architectural aesthetic and setting.
In keeping with the overall architectural theme of El Corazon, the design of Luma has been influenced by Irving Gill, a major figure in the early 20th-century modernist movement, with clean angular lines, ground-level arches and breezeways. Oceanside City Hall and Fire Station are notable examples of Gill’s historic architecture.

When Marcy Browe moved from Venice Beach to Oceanside in 2014 she had just left a career in high tech marketing and decided to turn her passion for photographing people into a full time job. Marcy’s grandfather was a professional photographer who started his business in the 1940s in Pittsburgh, PA. The love of photography was passed down to her and she learned the craft using his cameras. At first she considered photography a hobby and didn’t intend to make a living out of it. She graduated college with a degree in advertising and had a career in corporate marketing. After 15 years in a fast paced industry, she was burned out and started dreaming of starting a photography business. She finally had the chance to make this dream a reality when she left her corporate career and moved to Oceanside. Marcy uses her background in marketing to offer branding photography to business owners and corporations, who need photos to market themselves. “People come to me when they’re ready to expand, re-brand or promote their business, so I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many incredible business owners throughout North County.”
During the early months of the COVID pandemic, Marcy was among many business owners who saw their business come to a halt. “It was a really scary,

With a passion for sustainability, building an ecofriendly business was a priority from day one. Marcy worked with the Oceanside Green Business Network and the California Green Business Network to become a green-certified business. Her commitment to environmental stewardship includes giving a portion or her proceeds to environmentally focused organizations and working with sustainable vendors.

IT STARTS WITH CARING. When there’s an emergency, every second counts. That’s why we don’t waste a single one. From the moment a patient enters the Emergency Department, we jump into action to get them the best care and treatment possible. Because in situations like those, time may not be the only thing we’re trying to save. Check into the emergency room from home, so when you get here you can get in, get out, and start getting better, faster.
