ABOUT ADOPT-A-CLASS Our Adopt-A-Class program enables underserved students from Title I schools across California to visit Ocean Institute for hands-on STEM education. The Adopt-A-Class program is crucial to give these students the opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom.

The program is truly life changing for these students, as many have never seen the ocean, or been on a boat before. With your generosity, underserved students from Title I schools in San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles Counties will have an opportunity to learn marine science, maritime history, and study the ocean environment while having fun!

OUR PROGRAMS EXPERIENCE IS THE TEACHER Ocean Institute includes state-of-the-art teaching labs, the spectacular Maddie James Seaside Learning Center Historical Wharf, a historic tall ship, and an oceanographic research vessel. Immersion-based field trips range from one-hour science labs to multi-day programs at sea. All programs are designed to maximize immersion, spark curiosity, and inspire a deep commitment to learning. As the cornerstone of our mission, education brings discovery and learning to each student. Our immersive-based field trips foster STEAM exploration, promote critical thinking, and drive life-changing learning opportunities.

OCEAN INSTITUTE FOUNDING PAC A Professional Advisory Council Kenneth E. Petersen, Jr., Esq. Senior Vice President, Business Development Officer, Ocean Institute Board Member

Ocean Institute Professional Advisory Council (OIPAC) was established by Board Member Ken Petersen and First American Trust in collaboration with Ocean Institute. The goal is to connect local estate planning attorneys and their clients to estate planning and planned gifts to support Ocean Institute’s vital mission. Philanthropic planning and community outreach is often a critical component of a successful nonprofit’s fundraising activities. Ocean Institute’s PAC is charged with this important function by supporting individuals and their legal counsel who seek guidance in developing estate planning and charitable strategies.

OIPAC members share a passion for the work of Ocean Institute and introduce their clients to us who may wish to support our mission through their planned giving. OIPAC members serve as vital partners for us and volunteer their time and expertise to help identify potential supporters. They offer important education and insight into potential charitable opportunities at Ocean Institute.

My name is Gary J. Talavera, and I am a practicing attorney in Costa Mesa and a certified specialist in estate planning and trust and probate law. To me, the Ocean Institute means inspiration to grow, explore, achieve, and believe in yourself through learning and giving young minds the opportunity and experiences to be inspired by the ocean through engaging handson learning. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of OIPAC and to be a part of the legacy of Ocean Institute.

Get Set for Summer Camp!

A SEASON OF FUN AND ADVENTURE AWAITS!

Summer is just around the corner, and it isn’t too soon to start planning your children’s activities for the season. With that in mind, the Ocean Institute is excited to announce that registration for its award-winning summer camp programs opens for Ocean Institute members on March 11 (Family Memberships and up), and for the general public on March 18.

Our Summer Camp programs are widely recognized as educational, engaging, and fun! Ocean Institute has been named the #1 Summer Camp in Dana Point consistently over the years. Summer Camp season starts on June 17 and ends on August 16.

Reviving Pismo Clams: A Collaborative Effort for Restoration and Innovation INTERN SPOTLIGHT Ocean Institute takes great pride in its collaborative partnerships with Get Inspired!, Holdfast Aquaculture, Concordia University, and other esteemed entities. Together, we are dedicated to the vital mission of Pismo Clam restoration and education, fostering a collective effort that brings various parties and individuals together for this significant undertaking.

The challenge lies in the limited knowledge surrounding the cultivation of Pismo Clams, with population data proving elusive due to inconsistent monitoring over decades. Despite the historical abundance of the Pismo Clam, its numbers have sharply declined, prompting a concerted effort to reverse this trend.

In the early 1900s, Pismo Clam harvests reached staggering quantities annually, only to dwindle rapidly. By the 1980s, finding a legal-sized Pismo Clam at Pismo Beach, their namesake location, became a rarity. While fishery regulations have led to a modest rebound in the species, the number of clams of legal size remains far from optimal. The restoration of Pismo Clams to their former abundance holds the potential to revive crucial ecosystem services. A single 3-inch Pismo Clam can filter approximately 15.9 gallons of water per day, amounting to 1,790 gallons annually.

Ocean Institute's husbandry team has been at the forefront of developing preliminary protocols for culturing Pismo Clams in a sandless environment.

This innovative step opens up possibilities for various methods and unconventional locations for growing this species. Overcoming the unique challenge of maintaining clams upright and facilitating feeding without sand was made possible by the creative thinking of Aisha Vaughan, a Stan Cummings Scholar at Ocean Institute.

Inspired by the resemblance of the clam's shell to a taco, Aisha Vaughan suggested a taco holder as a solution. This unconventional approach not only addressed the challenge of sand absence but also provided excellent lateral shell support, allowing for movement and siphon extension for feeding. This creative solution resulted in a significant increase in feed response from the clams and has since served as the foundation for novel designs of 3D-printed clam containment systems.

Hatch and Release WHITE SEA BASS PUBLIC TOURS Become a marine scientist for a day, contributing to valuable research on white sea bass while learning about their crucial role in ocean health.

This seasonal tour will allow you a behind the scenes look into our vital work with HUBBS-Sea World Research Institute on the white sea bass population.

As one of the 13 facilities on the California Coast who participates in this initiative, we invite you to “tag” along with our team for this hands-on tour.

Tours will be running from January 13 to February 29.

LOOKING AHEAD AND HONORING OUR PAST Ocean Institute has always stood on the shoulders of giants.

Founder Stan Cummings Stan had a vision, and in 1980 was named Executive Director of Ocean Institute, renamed from the Orange County Marine Institute (OCMI). In 1984, he was elected President of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce. In 1985, he brought the Pilgrim to Ocean Institute and was named Dana Point Citizen of the Year. He started the annual Tall Ships Festival in 1986, and it continues to this day as the celebrated Maritime Festival. He led the way to create the Ocean in Motion van, bringing ocean education directly into classrooms. He brought the R/V Sea Explorer into the Ocean Institute family in 1994. As the years continued, the awards and recognitions mounted, including the inaugural Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Maritime Education from the National Maritime Historical Society in 1995 and the Sea Education Program of the Year Award from the American Sail Training Association in 1996. In 1999, the OCMI became Ocean Institute, with the ground breaking on the $16.5 million Ocean Education Center in 2000. Today Ocean Institute serves approximately 100,000 visitors each year and has continued to fulfill Stan’s legacy through providing programming that embodies the tagline he created, “Experience is the Teacher.”

Words from Sigrid Cummings Stan’s words, in the Dana Point News, February 3, 2000: “As our communities became more paved over and urbanized, our children have less and less opportunity to experience the natural world. That is the function of this organization to provide that. We have a unique style – we use the word “immersion.” We try to turn the children into tallship explorers and ocean research scientists.” In 1972, Stan wrote in his Stanford graduate program journal: “The vital ingredient for learning is not the physical setting, nor a particular set of conditions. It is the people who are brought together that will determine whether or not significant learning will take place.” Stan had a unique ability to bring people together, both instructors and students, and would be proud of the significant learning that continues to take place at his beloved Ocean Institute.
