PRESIDENT'S REPORT SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2018

As we head towards the AFL Grand Final, it is a time for the winning teams and its club members to reflect on the journey and the hard work it took to get to the finals. Winning is not easy, but the result of hard work, dedication and sacrifice. Rotary is the same, for an organisation to achieve its goals and celebrate its achievements, Rotarians need to put in the hard work as well. Football teams have their players and supporters; Rotary has its members. Rotary is a strong team with 1.2 million members worldwide and we will continue to grow. We need to have the same mind set as any football team aiming for the Premiership. A desire to win and a commitment to do our part. Wishing both teams and their supporters all the best for the big game ahead.

CLUB MEETING REPORT

SEPTEMBER 11TH 2018 Ludovic Grosjean ": 'Launch of the Ocean CleanX Project" Our guest speaker for the evening, Ludovic Grosjean, Principal Consultant, Chartered Engineer for OCEANX is determined to make a difference to our planet by saving the world’s oceans from plastic pollution.

Welcome to Rotary Tim! The club was pleased to induct Tim Gale as a member at the club meeting on September 11th. Tim, a surgeon, will have the vocational classification Health Services, and will serve on the Community Service Committee. His Rotary mentor will be fellow surgeon Bob Carey, who will introduce Tim to the cutting edge of Rotary. Welcome Tim and Elaine! We are so pleased to have you with the club and look forward to fulfilling and rewarding Rotary service with you in the years ahead.

Ludovic was inspired to begin his quest by the discovery of plastic debris on beaches and finding sea birds that had died from ingesting plastic. He proposes to use drones to monitor streams, rivers and the ocean for improperly disposed waste and then work in concert with others to identify, collect and dispose of plastic waste. We were led on a voyage of discovery showing the several steps employed to design a suitable drone and the specification adopted to arrive at a usable solution. We learnt how the hardware comprising a micro processor was chosen, (incidentally, it would be similar to that under development for a self driving car), it would draw less that 7.5 watts and be 4 times faster than a raspberry Pi. The next step is to create the AI (artificial intelligence) which requires strong algorithms and is capable of continuous learning by creating neural networks, becoming smarter after many trials, ultimately able to identify objects such as plastic bottles. Next is the design of a suitable vehicle, done by considering payload, flight time (limited by battery capacity) and operational constraints such as humidity, salinity, corrosion, regulations regarding flying over populated areas and maintaining line of sight to the operator. At the end of the design process, a quadcopter would be selected. We were informed that as prices are steadily decreasing and battery performance is improving this make selection less complicated. The clear message is that pollution of the ocean is a problem created by humans and humans must do something to reverse the process. The many questions from the floor further expanded on the topic and members and guests warmly thanked Ludovic for an interesting, educational and thought provoking evening.
