TRANSFORMING EDUCATION THROUGH INNOVATION AND COMMUNITY

At Union Station in Wichita, Kansas, Learning Lab is redefining what it means to learn. As a collaborative hub and co-learning space, Learning Lab fosters a new kind of education ecosystem—one that is flexible, creative, and personalized to meet the needs of diverse learners. From its dynamic spaces to its community-driven approach, Learning Lab empowers educators, students, and families to explore new possibilities in K-12 education.

A Space Built for Every Learner

Walking into Learning Lab is a sensory experience unlike any traditional school. Writable walls, movable furniture, and open spaces create an environment designed for students who thrive

outside of conventional learning structures. “Our space was created for kids who struggle in traditional environments,” explains Lydia Hampton, Managing Director at Learning Lab. “It might look chaotic, but there’s intentional, methodical engagement happening here. The learning is as unique as the students themselves.”

This innovative environment encourages creativity and collaboration in unexpected ways. Lydia recalls walking past a classroom where the teacher and students were all learning together under a table. “That’s exactly how the space was designed—to let students learn in a way that feels right for them.”

Fostering Connection and Creativity

Beyond the physical environment, Learning Lab is a place where students and educators connect and grow. Kristin Bogner, Community Director at Learning Lab, describes it as a home for education entrepreneurs and micro-schools. “We’re seeing a national movement where parents and educators want more tailored learning environments,” she says. “Learning Lab provides a space for these innovators to test their ideas and refine them in a supportive community.”

This support extends to students who might not fit the mold of traditional schooling. Kristin shared the story of a middle school student who blossomed at Learning Lab. “She didn’t feel like her old school environment was a fit, but here she’s a leader. On her third day, she was using our sewing machine to make bags for herself and a friend. She’s even on our Student Advisory Board now.” These stories highlight how Learning Lab creates opportunities for students to express their strengths and passions.

Building a Community of Educators

Learning Lab isn’t just for students—it’s a haven for educators as well. Kristin highlights the often-isolated nature of teaching: “Education is unique. You don’t get sent to conferences or networking events like in other professions. Often, you’re the only adult in the room.”

Learning Lab aims to change that by building a community of educators who can collaborate, learn, and grow together.

One of their standout initiatives is a leadership cohort for education innovators. “We want to offer opportunities that educators don’t usually have,” Kristin says. “This is a space where they can connect, share resources, and feel supported in their work.”

A Vision for the Future

As Learning Lab continues to grow, its impact is rippling beyond Wichita. The success of this space has drawn interest from other communities, inspiring conversations about expansion. “Could Wichita be a blueprint for other cities?” Lydia reflects. “We think so. The idea is to cultivate something unique for each community while sharing what we’ve learned here.”

Locally, Learning Lab is focused on expanding its offerings and facilities to accommodate more learners and programs. “We’re excited about what’s ahead,” Lydia says. “Whether it’s growing here or helping other communities, the future is about creating more opportunities for students, educators, and families.”

Innovating Together

Learning Lab’s success lies in its ability to embrace change and encourage collaboration. “We get to see the mission in action every day,” Kristin shares emotionally. “It makes working hard easy because you see the impact right in front of you.” From the energy of the students to the dedication of the educators, Learning Lab is more than a place—

WICHITA IS BUILDING THE FUTURE

Building the Future

Wichita as a Manufacturing Hub

Wichita is steadily cementing its position as a premier manufacturing destination, powered by strategic investments, forward-thinking urban development, and an emphasis on fostering innovation. The city is channeling resources into infrastructure, workforce development, and economic growth, positioning itself as a key player in the Midwest’s manufacturing landscape. By combining its industrial legacy with a contemporary approach to urban and economic planning, Wichita is creating a blueprint for sustainable growth and industry leadership.

Manufacturing at the Heart of Wichita’s Vision

Central to Wichita’s ambitious plans is Project Downtown 2035, a transformative 10-year vision designed to build on the city’s successes and attract future investments. With an impressive $760 million in planned developments, the initiative places a strong emphasis on creating

spaces and resources critical to industries like manufacturing.

Project Downtown 2035 prioritizes leveraging Wichita’s existing strengths—including its strategic central location, established industrial parks, and robust transportation networks. The plan emphasizes enhancing connections between logistics hubs, residential developments, and commercial areas. This integrated approach ensures manufacturers have seamless access to resources and talent, creating an ecosystem conducive to innovation and growth.

Public and private sector collaboration is a key driver of this vision. By aligning development goals with industry needs, Wichita is not just developing a business district but fostering an environment that nurtures innovation. This coordinated effort between policymakers, businesses, and community leaders underscores the city’s commitment to creating a thriving manufacturing hub.

Major Infrastructure Supporting Manufacturing

Wichita’s rise as a manufacturing powerhouse is further cemented by significant infrastructure investments. Among these, the Wichita Biomedical Campus stands out as a flagship project. With a $171 million price tag, the campus is set to bring cutting-edge facilities and over 3,000 students to the downtown area by 2026. While its primary focus is healthcare, the project showcases Wichita’s ability to develop state-ofthe-art infrastructure that appeals to industries requiring advanced technology and skilled labor.

Other notable developments, such as Riverfront Village and Arena Pointe, further enhance Wichita’s capacity to support manufacturing. These mixed-use projects offer proximity to modern housing, retail spaces, and amenities, fostering an environment where businesses and employees alike can thrive. Such developments are vital for improving employee retention, which is critical in a competitive labor market.

Additionally, projects like the Golden Circle Casino in Park City and the $40 million Ovation Apartments on Wichita’s west side highlight the city’s broader commitment to economic growth. These developments not only strengthen regional infrastructure but also provide spaces that align with manufacturers’ logistical and operational needs, ensuring the city remains a top choice for businesses.

Affordability and Accessibility: A Midwest Advantage

One of Wichita’s most compelling advantages for manufacturers is its affordability. Ranked #3 nationally for affordability, the city provides cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality or resources. This makes Wichita particularly attractive to manufacturers seeking to lower operational costs while maintaining access to essential services and networks.

In addition to affordability, Wichita’s central location offers unparalleled access to transportation networks. Highways, railroads, and air cargo hubs connect the city to regional and national markets, ensuring efficient supply chain operations. This logistical advantage is a significant draw for manufacturers who rely on seamless distribution.

The labor market, while tight, remains another key asset. With unemployment projected at 3.7% in 2025, Wichita’s workforce is both skilled and dedicated. To address potential challenges in labor availability, the city is investing heavily in workforce training and education. These initiatives are designed to equip workers with the skills manufacturers need, ensuring businesses have access to a pipeline of talent.

Transformational Projects Highlight the City’s Potential

Wichita’s dedication to fostering a thriving manufacturing ecosystem is further demonstrated by a series of transformational projects outlined in the 2023 Year-End Update. Investments in healthcare, education, and community resources underscore the city’s commitment to holistic development, which directly benefits the manufacturing sector.

For instance, the Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital expansion, a $22 million initiative, and the $20 million Exploration Place Playscape project showcase Wichita’s efforts to enhance community resources and quality of life. These projects not only attract new residents but also create an environment where businesses can flourish.

Downtown Wichita is also experiencing significant revitalization, with developments like the Kingdom Building and the Simmons Bank headquarters relocation. These projects combine commercial and residential spaces with modern amenities, meeting the demands of manufacturing companies looking to establish or expand their presence in the region.

Wichita’s

Role in Midwest Manufacturing

Manufacturing has long been a cornerstone of Wichita’s economy. From its legacy in aviation to its growing presence in advanced manufacturing and technology, the city has consistently

demonstrated its capacity for innovation. Today, Wichita is building on this legacy with strategic investments aimed at sustaining and expanding its manufacturing capabilities.

The $302 million Wichita Biomedical Campus, the ambitious Project Downtown 2035, and transformative infrastructure projects like Arena Pointe are clear indicators of the city’s commitment to manufacturing. These initiatives are complemented by efforts to modernize public infrastructure, such as parking and transit systems, ensuring the city remains accessible and functional for businesses and residents alike.

Creating a Sustainable Future

Beyond the immediate benefits of economic growth, Wichita’s focus on sustainability sets it apart as a forward-thinking manufacturing hub. Initiatives to promote eco-friendly practices and energy-efficient technologies are gaining traction, reflecting the city’s commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.

Wichita is also investing in smart city technologies to enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. These advancements not only benefit manufacturers but also improve the overall quality of life for residents, reinforcing the city’s appeal as a desirable place to live and work.

Public-Private Collaboration Drives Success

One of the key factors behind Wichita’s success is the strong collaboration between public and private sectors. By working together, stakeholders can identify shared goals and implement solutions that benefit both businesses and the community. This collaborative approach is evident in projects like the Wichita Biomedical Campus, where government agencies, educational institutions, and private companies have joined forces to create a world-class facility.

Such partnerships extend to workforce development initiatives, where local businesses play an active role in shaping training programs to meet industry needs. This ensures that Wichita’s

workforce remains competitive and well-equipped to support the manufacturing sector’s evolving demands.

Building on a Legacy of Excellence

Wichita’s manufacturing legacy provides a strong foundation for its future growth. The city’s history in aviation manufacturing, for example, has established it as a center of innovation and expertise. Today, this legacy is being expanded to include advanced manufacturing and technology-driven industries, positioning Wichita as a leader in the Midwest.

By leveraging its existing strengths and embracing new opportunities, Wichita is creating a manufacturing ecosystem that is both dynamic and resilient. The city’s ability to adapt to changing market conditions and invest in forward-thinking initiatives ensures that it remains competitive on a national and global scale.

Conclusion: A Vision for the Future
